Can you send me a tablet? :D

Tim
@Fabby Any ideas:

Q: How can I run two screens from two seperate GPUs?

TimI have two nVidia GTS 450 GPUs, each with a DVI, an HDMI and a VGA port. I want two screens, both running off the DVI ports. I've setup my xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it is not working. xorg.conf # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-sett...

Why does Ubuntu have so much trouble with graphics cards?

Tim
@Zacharee1 I really don't know
I could just plug my screens into my Mac and be done with it

I guess the manufacturers could put more than 20 minutes into their Linux drivers though

Tim
I think nVidia has been gettting better and better
but yes

1:32 PM
Yeah, but it's still pretty bad
At least they continue to support older cards and newer releases, unlike a certain red-colored company

Tim
yes

@Tim try looking at the multiseat docs

Tim
@Mateo I don't want multiseat tho - I just want two screens
one X server, dual screen.

With two graphics cards, so part of the setup should be similar
not the part where you use two mice ect ;)
They way dual screens work is it is one giant "virtual screen" to the graphics card - it probally wont work like how you are thinking with two cards so easily
Here we go:
2
Q: How do I set up two monitors on two very different graphics cards?

Ryan RiegnerI have two video cards, one running each of two identical monitors. My main card is an Nvidia GeForce 750 Ti, and the secondary is a Radeon HD5500. When I boot from live USB, the monitor attached to the HD5500 displays the desktop, and the other displays a gray screen with a flashing cursor (but ...

1:50 PM
@Mateo you save the xorg settings for one. install the 2nd and merge the settings :+
to use the cards one at a time ...

7
Q: Dual monitors on dual video cards on Ubuntu

domI have been trying this to no avail. I am new to Linux, so a step by step explanation would be greatly appreciated. I have two NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT video cards. I want a monitor to run on each card, so Twinview cannot be used because my understanding that is only for single video cards. I went...

I've only ever used two screens on one card...

Tim
M@

@Tim It's possible, but you need to run two xclient sessions

Tim
@Mateo I've got it working before

(which is probably not what you want)

1:55 PM
Then synergy between them?

Is there anyone which can help me with something dumb in bash?

Tim
0
A: Get both Graphics cards working

TimSource, Unix & Linux I finally got this working, 2 Graphics Cards (nVidia GTS 450) with both screens on DVI. Here is my xorg.conf: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout0" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "Cor...

But that no longer works
and idk why tbh

@Tim Upgoated.

Tim
:)
why does base mosaic not work?
That is what I want
but saving that to the xorg file doesn't help...

you don't have a sli cord on them do you?

1:59 PM
Yep, and having 2 xclient sessions will not give you that...

Tim
@Mateo i don't think I have one...
oh hang on...
is that an SLi cord
and has it come off?
!?
@Mateo ^^^
Or @Fabby?

2:25 PM
anyone with time and the ability do do a VM install of xenial to help me with testing something? VM's run so slow on my machine

@Tim looks like a SLI bridge
and yes, bottom end looks loose

Tim
@JourneymanGeek I plugged it in

But you ought to be able to run the two cards on their own
SLI means one card's the 'master' I seem to think

Tim
Hmm okay
I'll see if this works

user139252
@Fabby I'll try, but I might make fun of you if it's easy :p

Tim
2:34 PM
#embarrasing

@Tim tsk tsk tsk :p

kos
Can someone give this one the last strike? It's around since yesterday: askubuntu.com/questions/765433/… and perhaps even this one: askubuntu.com/questions/765742/…

user139252
Did you try turning it off and back on again? @Tim :p

@kos asking for votes is frowned upon in these parts

@kos there and there

kos
2:39 PM
@jokerdino I know, I'm not a nice guy.
@Zacharee1 Thanks

@jokerdino As someone so politely told me..

user139252
@jokerdino being lame is frowned upon in these parts, but that hasn't stopped you

@TheBrownOne wow

Tim

A: How can I run two screens from two seperate GPUs?

TimSo uhh... This is a little embarrassing... I uhh my umm. Okay. I'll say it. My SLI cord came undone. I have got it working now. Although I also had to change my xorg file from using DPF-0 screen to DVI-I-0. Yep.

@TheBrownOne Sorry @jokerdino, but that gets a star
@Tim xD

Tim
2:41 PM
That is today since around midday to now I've been trouble shooting...
I even know when it happened!

Hardware issues: what should be checked first, but what are never checked

Tim
I was messing with the router behind my computer, I must have knocked the machine and that dislodged it!

kos
@Zacharee1 Did you mean "off-topic"?

Tim
@Zacharee1 Hey - first I tried a different DVI cable!

@kos both?
:p
AGH
STAHP WIT TEH PINGZ

Tim
2:43 PM
@Videonauth hmm i can

PLZZ

Tim
@Videonauth 64 or 32 bit?

all the bits

@Tim this would be great i need to test my own answer to my own question and need someone with a clean 16.04 install or a VM with this to get all the errors fetched. on my machine my answer works but i have a ton of stuff installed
64 bit

96-bit
um

2:45 PM
@TheBrownOne Challenge accepted.

Does anyone see a removed message from me right above?
Or does it still show a dot?

Tim
Because everyone needs 7.922816251×10²⁸ bits of ram

Because I see a dot, but I can't delete it
It says it already has been

so what I really need is for all admins and root to have a red prompt and all others to have a green prompt. @TheBrownOne
What I've done already is comment away any PS1 references in local .bashrc and /etc/skel/.bashrc files.

Tim

2:46 PM
then I've done:

@Fabby and 7 green lines all perpendicular to each other, but 2 drawn in red ink and 3 in transparent ink?

Tim
You could load the whole internet into RAM
@Vio
@Videonauth It's gonna be a litte while, i have to cut the grass
but I'll ping when it's installed and booted

@Tim ok no problem :) i have time

Then I have:
if [ $EUID -eq 0 ] || [ $(groups $USER | grep &>/dev/null '\badm\b') ] ; then
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;31m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\n\$ '
else
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\n\$ '
fi
@TheBrownOne

Tim
okay bbl guys

2:49 PM
and the root prompt is red, but the admin prompt is still green.
What have I missed?
@Zacharee1 Yes! 7-dimensional with 6 different base colours.

@Fabby it was a Clients from Hell video :p

I didn't know humans could see more then 3 base colours (RGB)
So what planet are you from?
>:-)

Tim
@Fabby and black / white

@Tim No: those are just absence of colour and all colours mixed.

Tim
@Fabby but human's eyes specifcally see those seperatley
rod / cone cells

user139252
2:52 PM
@Fabby trying to see what's going on

user139252
Alright, that grep command isn't evaluating as true

@Zacharee1 Orthogonally would be possible in 2D, Perpendicular would call for 7 dimensions... ;-)

@Tim they aren't colors though. One is the absense of light and the other is the presence of light.

@TheBrownOne It is for my "admin" user... :
:/
@Tim OK...

user139252
Change it to:

user139252
2:55 PM
$(groups $USER | grep '\badm\b' &>/dev/null)

user139252
should work

@TheBrownOne trying right now.
Still green prompt...
lemme try a new terminal.
OK, I'm using su to switch to the new user, would that make a difference @TheBrownOne

kos
@Fabby Remove the square brackets and the command substitution: if [ $EUID -eq 0 ] || groups $USER | grep &>/dev/null '\badm\b'

@kos doing that now.
Nope: still green prompt for admin user.

user139252
@Fabby I think it has to do with how you wrote the if

3:02 PM
@TheBrownOne did he offend it?

kos
@Fabby Problem is probably in the prompt then, or you're not in the adm group:
$ groups $USER
user : user adm disk cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare
$ if [ $EUID -eq 0 ] || groups $USER | grep &>/dev/null '\badm\b'; then echo foo; fi
foo

user139252
Shouldn't root be in the adm group?

@kos It works!
Sorry....
@TheBrownOne it isn't...

user139252
Oh, strange

@kos I made a mistake opening a new terminal... Why does this work and [$()] not?

kos
3:05 PM
@Fabby ;) even better perhaps: if [ $EUID -eq 0 ] || groups "$USER" | grep -q '\badm\b'; then foo; fi

user139252
In other news, I'm eating dinosaur egg oatmeal, because I'm an adult

@TheBrownOne sounds nice

@kos spaces in user name?
but why without [ ??? that I don't understand!

kos
@Fabby The $() is replaced with the output of the command; if you redirect grep's STDERR and STDOUT = no output (and the $() token is replaced with an empty string). If you remove the $() and the outer test the return value is evaluated instead

@kos so nothing = false and anything = true!
Makes sens now!
Thanks!

kos
3:07 PM
@Fabby Yep!

@kos Want me to make a question so you can answer?
(and get some rep out of this?)
(or better give you a bounty on one of your answers?)

I'll favorite and upvote, because this sounds like one of the things that I want to do but never will

@TheBrownOne Before you posted that, I never even heard of it...

kos
@Fabby Please, don't worry about it :) help given in chat is for free. I think that a question like that one would be a duplicate by the way.

Grazie Mille!

user139252
3:10 PM
What does the -s flag on sudo do?

user139252
I always do sudo -i

@TheBrownOne sudo sudo

@TheBrownOne make you root.

kos
@Fabby Nessun problema. ;)

user139252
I thought that's what sudo -i was for?

3:11 PM
@TheBrownOne simply do sudo --help

@TheBrownOne different ways of killing the same rabbit...

@Fabby "More than one way to skin a cat," you mean?

user139252
I prefer -i :P

kos
@TheBrownOne Apparently -s reads $SHELL to determine which shell to invoke, while -i reads the user's entry in /etc/passwd

@TheBrownOne scared of change, huh? :PP

3:13 PM
@TheBrownOne that doesn't execute /etc/bash.bashrc
@Zacharee1 Yeah, but I don't like cats, so I don't want to seem biased.
Whereas I love rabbit!

o_O

(especially stewed in cherry beer with cherries!) >:-)
I like dogs, I don't like cats.
Cats are too stupid to remember 5 commands.

user139252
Cats are mean.

@Fabby No, cats just don't want to

Whereas some dogs can do independant thinking, depending on the race.

user139252
3:15 PM
Cats are lazy.

user139252
Cats are distant.

@TheBrownOne not mine

@Zacharee1 You've been reading too many Garfield cartoons.

@TheBrownOne mine won't leave me alone

Cats are just dumb.

3:15 PM
@Fabby and owning too many cats I guess...

user139252
Cats don't make you feel like the world is a bright and happy place where anything is possible.

@TheBrownOne have you had a cat?

user139252
Yes.

I don't own any cat. Lots of friends of mine do.

Because I've had quite a few and they've all been great

user139252
3:16 PM
It pooped everywhere but the litter box and ate my bird.

@Zacharee1 Have you had any dogs?

@Fabby Yeah, and I like them too

E.G. I trained my sister's dog to come and sit on my shoulders if I use my computer

depends on the cat

3:17 PM
With direct comparisons, both are stupid compared to the other's strength

and the dog
My dog is awesome

You are awesome.

and I've seen some cats that are neat too.

They evolved to have their own specialties
@jokerdino stop hitting on people :p

that star still hurts. I wonder why I returned.

3:19 PM
addiction !

@jokerdino you're a mod, delete the message :p
Who here has Android?

or cancel stars
@Zacharee1 I do

Do you like icon packs?

nope
my phone is mostly stock and I like it

I still think you should look at this one: play.google.com/store/apps/…

3:21 PM
@Zacharee1 You could have asked that without referring to "Android" and the answer would have ben the same...

@Fabby wat

"Do you like icon packs?"

You don't like icon packs?

Nope, not on Windows, Android, Ubuntu, ...

Why does no one like icon packs?

3:23 PM
I like to personalise my own stuff.

I don't like to take someone else's and just feel like I'm special...

Wow
That's why you want customization?

I make my own pack therefore I don't just feel special but I am...

I got the pack because it looks nice and I like it
Not because I think I'm special o_O

Background too?

(and the icons are not flat)
Let me rephrase that: I assembled that one myself...
The motherboard I didn't design neither: I just downloaded the design from a BBS, but I still etched it myself... ;-)

Icon packs don't replace anything but the icons they have available

yeah...

I have my own wallpaper, my own colors for my launcher...
I don't get you

3:27 PM
@Zacharee1 OK, let me try to rephrase:
Downloading an icon pack from somewhere and just deploying it is not good enough for me.
I download one picture here, another picture there, convert them all to icons

OK, well you generalized that quite a bit when you first said it

and then apply those icons to the applications I use most.
Yeah, I'm sorry for being my confused and confusing self:
I do use too little words to explain what's going on in my brain, because, to me, it's all obvious! :D

@Fabby you're such a client

user139252
I just use the Paper GTK theme and icon pack with my own gradients as a background. I'm not trying to feel special with it, it just looks clean

^
It looks nice
I don't use my computer to make me feel special :p

user139252
3:31 PM
@Zacharee1 why does that have an up vote?

@TheBrownOne you tell me
probably a vote troll though

@Zacharee1 flagged, downvoted and commented.

user136984
@WindowsinsiderBoomTech: Well, as tomatoes don't really have anything to do with babies I'm not sure how you made that connection, but anyway, the reason I said "BoomBaby" was not because I was trying to say that you were one, but as I said, it was the first thing to pop up into my head. It actually popped into my head because there is this guy on YouTube who says "Boom Baby!" every time something big happens and "Boom" was already in your name so that's what I thought of...

@TheBrownOne I feel special just logging on! ;-)

user136984
@WindowsinsiderBoomTech: I didn't mean it in the way you thought I did. But you seriously are making a too bigger thing out of this, I am not offending, it is you who are choosing to be offended. Now enough of this please.

3:32 PM
@Zacharee1 I understand the individual words, but I don't understand the collective... Care to give a synonym for "client" in this sentence?

How do you un-ignore a user?

I think you need to go to his page and do it.

@Fabby client, esp: clientsfromhell.net
hmm

@Zacharee1 I use everything to make me feel special: the floor I'm lying on, the computer I'm using, the background, my phone, my clothes...

o_O

3:33 PM
yup

@Zacharee1 if they show up in chat?

in chat

user136984
@Zacharee1: If you person enters chat you should be able to just click on their profile and then there should be a button somewhere at the bottom.

I don't see their profile pic when they're here

@Zacharee1 Not really: I'm a problem solver, not a problem creator ;-)

3:35 PM
@Fabby oh, definitely
yeah, totally

for what date the first point release of 16.04 is scheduled ?

@Zacharee1 click the small little icon they have and click "unignore"

@Videonauth 16.04 has been out since the 21st

@Zacharee1 lemme try to ignore you for a moment.

@Fabby but they don't appear
oh great

3:36 PM
@Zacharee1 first point release means 16.04.1

oh, that's what you meant

Wel, you get a small icon

Where?

and now you're unignored.

But where was this icon?

3:38 PM
here:

Found it in my chat user prefs

try to ignore me
I'll get a small icon
then you can still click that one to unignore me.

user136984

user136984
That what you mean?

oh
For some reason WindowsInsider's icon just completely disappeared for me

3:39 PM
Ah! :D :D :D

user136984
@Zacharee1: Ah, hadn't thought of that yet! I think I will put him and Henry on ignore! That will go for a quieter chat! ;D

@Zacharee1 he hasn't been in chat for a while

@Fabby yeah, but I ignored him when he was
And no icon then

meh: no big loss!
anyway:

user136984
He suggested I change my name to "ParanoidBaby" and do something even worse with my profile picture... :D

3:41 PM
BACK TO STUDYING!

user136984
This was all due to a slight misunderstanding though...

@Fabby wat??

@ParanoidPanda next time use the left hand, the fingers and the age thingy... (It worked like a charm on you!!! :D)
\o/

@Fabby O_o

3:42 PM
You know that one, right?
Hold up your left hand...
Now count out loud...
on the fingers of your left hand...

user136984
Oh that... :D

your age!
;-)

user136984
Yes, I should try that on a few people round here! ;D

and then something like stop acting like a five-year old throwing a tantrum, please?
OK, off I am!!!

Good afternoon :)

user136984
3:44 PM
See you! ;)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Afternoon! :)

@Fabby no?

@ParanoidPanda Hey my friend ... hello ! :)

user136984
@chaskes: You're welcome for the bounty by the way! I was so happy to finally found a solution that I thought I would give one! :)
