@ParanoidPanda May I ask you for your opinion about what free AV tool to chose for Win 10?

@ByteCommander ClamWin ... Hello my friend ! :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: Certainly, I understand that Avast! is quite good. The best out of the free ones anyway, AVG spies on you almost as much as Windows 10 does and sells your info to advertisers so I wouldn't advise them.

Some colleagues recommended me Quiho/360 Total Security, my current one on other machines is Avast.

user136984
Avast! has the highest detection ratings.

@cl-netbox Hey! Is that ClamAV for Windows? But it has no live scanner, has it?

user136984
4:05 PM
There is also Panda and Norton, but I think that they are paid for, though very good.

@ByteCommander i would suggest sophos antivirus it currently detects the most viruses
avast and sophos have similar detection rates

However, I'm starting to get unlucky with Avast, as more and more of its features become paid-only...

@ByteCommander yes but there is a live scanning version too ... please wait ... I search it for you ... :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: BitDefender is really good.

Tim
@Zacharee1 sure, but white is detected differently by your eyes to red, green and blue

4:07 PM
Has any of you heard something about 360 Total Security (formerly Quiho) yet?

user136984
They (BitDefender) even have a free Linux version, though you have to get a new license every month.

Need it for Win 10, not for Linux...

user136984
I know, just saying they're good.

user136984
Haven't heard of this 360 one though...

Tim
I used AVG on windows

user136984
4:09 PM
I just bought the Norton Internet Security thing and put it on maximum settings... That did the trick for me... :D

Tim
although doesn't windows 10 have something in it?

user136984
@Tim: Have you read the AVG privacy policy?

Tim
@ParanoidPanda Nope

user136984
They sell everything about your computer, your search history, and your network to advertisers...

4:10 PM
And that's Pcmag's review about Quiho: pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422024,00.asp

Tim
@ParanoidPanda So?

user136984
@Tim: Well, it's fine if you're fine with it, but I'm not...

user136984
We collect non-personal data to make money from our free offerings so we can keep them free, including:

Advertising ID associated with your device;
Browsing and search history, including meta data;
Internet service provider or mobile network you use to connect to our products; and
Information regarding other applications you may have on your device and how they are used.

user136984
I just don't want to give away that sort of information freely to anyone who wants to know...

Tim
@ParanoidPanda Why?
It's free, they have to advertise and I want to see relevant adverts

4:13 PM
@ParanoidPanda generally I consider you too cautious but in -this- case I agree.

user136984
@Tim: Well, what if a hacker gets hold of that data? It could be bad news for you depending on how detailed and extensive it is... They were meant to be sending it in plain text... I'm sure I read that anyway...

user136984
And you may be fine with big corporations knowing everything about you, and governments too, but I just don't want them to know everything about me.

Tim
@ParanoidPanda it clearly says it's non-personal

user136984
How much more personal can you get?

Tim
Like I'd much rather see an advert for the 32GB sim card I looked at on amazon yesterday for half price than an advert for a VW Golf which I can't drive

4:15 PM
@ByteCommander : clamwin.com | immunet.com

user136984
But they shouldn't get information on all installed applications etc, that's just crossing a line... And giving it to god knows who...

Tim
I still don't get the issue?
It's benifical for everyone

user136984
Well I just don't want them to know everything about me. I want some privacy. Is that too much to ask for?

Tim
I'm sure a hacker would really care that I had an xorg issue
@ParanoidPanda nah, that's fine to ask for
I just don't see why you want that privacy in that way...

@cl-netbox Thanks, but I don't think that's what I want...

Tim
4:17 PM
Not saying you can't have it

user136984
I was just saying that if you want some privacy don't go for AVG... That's all... Clearly you don't want any privacy so it's fine for you to have it, but I thought I'd just mention it as we are recommending these things to @ByteCommander so he should be well informed.

@Tim any light is seen as "white" by rods. Cones see "white" as an equal mix of RGB

Yes, I'm no big fan of AVG... Thanks.

Tim
fair point :)

user136984
@Tim: Will you like it though when a drone is following you around and filming you doing absolutely everything and then that is being sold to advertisers who will start advertising you loo role when they see you have run out? :P

Tim
4:20 PM
@ParanoidPanda no I will not like that
But I would like a kitchen cupboard that auto reorders stuff

user136984
:D

I think my options are mainly Avast, Avira, or Panda?
Do you know how they are offline? Because it looks like e.g. Panda does not store any local AV signatures and totally relies on the Cloud?

@ByteCommander Microsoft security essentials...

o.O Wut?

It used to be behing the curve, but now M$ has caught up... (you're talking Windows, right? Or Linux?)

4:31 PM
Yes, W10.
But... I mean, really?

well: MSE...
Really! They've caught up...
I'm uninstalling all AVG and Avast and replacing them with MSE: it just works and doesn't give people dumb ads for "upgraded features"
It's basic, but does the job.

I'm actually trying to get as few MS stuff on that machine as possible with a preinstalled Windows 10...

(my 0,02€)
as few = as little

Currently it comes with a 30 days McAfee...
Thanks. :)

delete that, replace with mse and you will not have to worry any more.
no "additional features", no licensing once / year, no ads for the free version....

4:35 PM
I would already have an Avast license from my other machines...

@Fabby I did this years ago ... :D
@ByteCommander don't activate it ... it is nearly impossible to get rid of these 3rd party AVs completely once they are installed ... a pain in the a.. ! :)

@cl-netbox preinstalled as it seems... :/
Going to nuke it for sure, but no idea how far its tentacles already reach down into the system...

@ByteCommander no ... when you activate ... it downloads McAfee and installs ... anyway I suggest to format the partition and make a clean install of Windows :)

There is already a tray icon etc from it... not sure.
The notebook did not see the internet yet though, so it had no chance to load anything additional.
@cl-netbox And where would I get a Win 10 installation disk?

@ByteCommander download the iso from MS before and create the media ... :)

user136984
4:50 PM
Oh my god! So cute!!! There are baby Wood Pigeons flying around outside! :D

Might be a good choice. Would have to somehow get all the acer/nvidia/... drivers manually afterwards again.
@ParanoidPanda Didn't you hate pigeons?

@ByteCommander but then you have a clean system without any crap ... it is not only McAfee ... :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: No! You must be thinking of someone else! I've always loved big fat Wood Pigeons!!! :D

Aha...

user136984
I point them out and goo over them wherever I go... :D

4:52 PM
@cl-netbox Yeah, there's also crap from ebay, netflix, foxit, and a whole lot of office stuff they want to get extra money for.

@ByteCommander or think about dropping Windows at all ... that's what I did ... :)

Q: Have I missed anything? user1 is not in the sudoers file

Oskar K.I've created a user on a server where there was only root as: # adduser user1 with a password. Then # su - user1 And then: $ apt-get update E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/ E: Could not open l...

Probably downloading that iso, making another full image of all partitions with clonezilla and then reinstalling would be optimal though. That way I can free space for Linux as well.
@cl-netbox And what about activating Win 10? I mean, probably the needed product key is already pre-entered and I would need that to reinstall WIndows later again. How do I get that?
having a break, BBL...

user136984
Just bought some new headphones! Hope they don't break within a month like the last two did! :D

@ByteCommander First activate Windows ... key will be saved to your MS account ... then reinstall ... by the way ... if you don't want an MS account, you can forget about Win 10 at all ... many apps won't work. :)

@blade19899 done

user136984
I love this! :D

Q: Eight tips to handle your question in the worst possible way

Jacob VlijmRead the post below with a wink. It is not meant as a bitter numeration, just a parody on what we all run into every now and then. Look at it as an Ask Ubuntu conversion of "How to irritate people" NEVER give all relevant information at once. Especially don't mention if your issue seems to be r...

Hi @jokerdino ! :)

5:24 PM
hi

@ByteCommander : forgot to say ... what @Fabby meant with MSE ... it is already built-in ... was renamed back to Windows Defender. :)

5:35 PM
@cl-netbox Examples? (No, I don't want one)

@ByteCommander most of all modern apps ... I tried Win 10 Enterprise (both versions) ... with and without the modern apps ... but this possibility is for Enterprise edition only ... so when you don't want to create a MS account it makes no sense to use Win 10 at all ! :)

What is "most of all modern apps"?
I don't need a Cortana for example.
Also, I would have got a Win 7 disc and license laying around, but I want this one with Win 10 as that's what I have to use in the office as well.

@ByteCommander I think you should try it out yourself ... boot Windows without internet connection ... create a normal user account ... then check ... :)

I haven't had any internet connection yet anyway.
Still don't miss anything except Ubuntu on that system... :P

@ByteCommander : Do whatever you want to do ... the decision is up to only you ! :)

5:44 PM
But I fear the nuking the system and trying to reinstall from any Win 10 iso might lead to an unregistered version.
Can you tell me what I have to take care of to get the license key of the preinstalled Windows and a fresh Windows 10 iso corresponding to that so that I can safely do a clean install? @cl-netbox

user136984
@ByteCommander: Why do you need Windows though? Why can't you just run Linux on the machine?

I'm not sure how often I'll use it, but I think it's good to have one at least once to dual-boot. Especially because I might need it for the office or studying later...

@ByteCommander There are many articles to be found on the internet about exactly this thing ... :) and as I said before this is how the licencing works -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/29375485#29375485 Microsoft really wants the users to generate an account ! :)

This article seems to describe how to get the preinstalled Windows' key, right? answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/…

@ParanoidPanda Very good idea ! ... what I did myself, recommended and suggested ! :)
@ByteCommander There are so many ... Microsoft Answers is not the best source ... read on TechNet or MSDN ... :)

user136984
5:52 PM

O.O That's fat.

user136984
@ByteCommander: And chilly. :D

@ByteCommander : these are the most valuable MS sources for everything Windows -> technet.microsoft.com/en-us | msdn.microsoft.com/en-us :)

Okay, thanks...

@ByteCommander the libraries there are really good ! :)
Have to go now ... goodbye :)

6:59 PM
@Tim nice ;) did that help to plug back in?

7:27 PM
Ugh, I want to install TLP because of battery life, but last time I did that the speakers broke >.<
Is that something TLP can do?

what's tlp?
never mind, I found it

Well, it hasn't broken anything so far & added ~1:15 to my battery life...sooooo

7:43 PM
sounds good

@RPiAwesomeness 1 minute or 1 hour that is?

@ParanoidPanda weird i just did a VM install from the 16.04 iso and it had only the Gnome-software center
here on my machine whic is upgraded i have both aswell

@ByteCommander 1 hour, 15 minutes
@Videonauth Nope, that's normal

They changed Ubuntu Software Center out for GNOME Software Center because most people thought it was better

user136984
7:53 PM
@Videonauth: Do you still have the ISO file?

user136984
If so, please tell me what the SHA256SUM is so that I can check if it's the same one I install 16.04 from.

The Software Center needed a lot of needed a lot of work and with all the work on UT and convergence they decided it was a better use of resources to kill it in favor of gnome software

yes i have it still

Q: How do I downgrade Gedit to a previous (3.10.4) Version in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

VideonauthAs the title already says i have some plug ins which don't run with gedit 3.18.3 which is shipped with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. How can I downgrade to the version 3.10.4 which was used in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 15.10 and get all the plug ins possible installed? And how do I revert it if not needed ...

done phew
a whole days work

Currently running Windows' MediaCreationTool to download and make a Win 10 iso...

@Videonauth Are you confusing update-manager with the software center in your answer to that question?

It's now verifying the download (46% finished).
CPU at ~50°C with fan speeds of around 4.6k RPM... My machine is roaring like a rhino!

@chaskes uhm i mean the two thingies with the ubuntu bag symbol

Tim
@Videonauth im really sorry, I'm back now

brb have to ram a needle in my belly

Tim
diabetic?

yep

Tim
:(

@Videonauth Ok, I think @ParanoidPanda 's question is about gnome-software and update-manger, but your answer is about gnome-software and software-center
@Videonauth @Videonauth I might know something about that too

Tim
@Mateo That and a quick modification to the xorg file fixed it all!
So frustrating, that wasted ~ 7 hours.

@chaskes I don't mind buying ebooks when they are for a good cause :-)

Win 10 ISO creation finished, CPU cooling down again... Phew.
Backup of the notebook's preinstalled Windows finished too.
Now I hope the reinstall works well...
Bye all!

@onebree Exactly. And no starch is the best

Oh no! He's back again! ;-)

well i did work today :D hard work

You people..

Zaccharee1 i did finish my guide :)

user139252
@Fabby Nope.

8:24 PM
fabby roll up a little

@Videonauth upgoated twice!

for sure my grammar is as always terrible

I'll have another read. (and I'm pretty sure your English is better then my German)

user139252
@Fabby than* :P

We all just lost.

OH GOOD JOB @TheBrownOne. YOU'VE GONE AND MADE ME LOSE THE GAME! >.<

@TheBrownOne Sorry! Keep on correcting me!
@Videonauth Install an English dictionary in your browser (if you have FF, I can provide you with a working link)

yes please do so

8:38 PM
thank you

Bitte...

Tim
@ParanoidPanda You know I said I like tailored adverts?

user136984
@Tim: Well... That just looks strange if anything... :D

@Fabby and hank you for correcting that grammar mess i made lol

user136984
And I've never seen a cat running in a wheel before... :D

Tim
8:41 PM
@ParanoidPanda A week ago i was looking at auto emptying litter trays

user136984
But do you trust these adverts? I mean, mostly all the malware I've got has been from accidentally clicking on adverts...

user136984
Seriously, I got quite a serious rootkit from clicking on one once...

user136984
It just got loaded onto my machine instantly and disabled my AV etc.

Tim
@Pandya Yes because a) I'm using Linux and b) they're provided by google

@Videonauth Those are easy things to fix (I still forget that there is a word called "than" and I've had my first native English partner more then 30 years ago)

user136984
8:43 PM
@Tim: Didn't you mean to ping me? :D

Tim
oops

user136984
You pinged the imposter Panda! :P

Tim
soz Pandya

user136984
@Tim: Right, well, all the rootkit giving adverts I've got so far have been through Google, and all but one were on Linux. The first one was on Windows, but all the ones after that have been on Ubuntu, luckily I have a good HIDS installed as well as rkhunter or I probably wouldn't have got rid of them.

Tim
what does rootkit do?

8:45 PM
@ParanoidPanda I've never had an unwilling virus infection in my entire career!

Tim
and tbh target adverts make me more trustworthy!

@Tim it's malware that hides itself from the OS...

Tim
so just a virus?

@Tim You should get out of IT and into marketing!
@Tim no.

user136984
Completely hides itself, it controls your OS so if you look in netstats or wherever it just won't show itself.

8:46 PM
@Tim Virus != worm != rootkit != trojan

Tim
differences?

they're all malware though.

user136984
A lot of the time rootkits are used to hide malware.

Tim
@Fabby What anti virus should I have for linux?

user136984
But the malware is often separate from the rootkit, it's basically just malware with root access. Hence the name.

user136984
@Tim: There aren't any real good ones with active-protection, and ClamAV only really seems to do Windows viruses. I would advise you just get something like rkhunter and OSSEC HIDS installed, that should cover the rootkit side of things anyway.

our local Crazy Panda is the expert on anti-virus software for Linux.
I use clam*

user136984
That's just the clamav daemon though, still not active-protection...

user136984
Well, people often tell me there are no rootkits or viruses for Linux, well, I've had most of them so I can say those people are wrong! :D

8:49 PM
\o
@ParanoidPanda I'm not saying that!

Read-only root filesystem FTW :P
Today is upgrade-the-pi-to-16.04 day.

I said: I've never had an unwilling virus infection in my entire career!

Tim
It's incredible that you get so many viruses when you're that paranoid

That means powering it off for the first time in months and taking the microSD card out.

/me doesn't use an AV?
o/ @NathanOsman

8:51 PM
@NathanOsman starred so @TheBrownOne can easily see that later...
@NathanOsman Woohoo!

We'll see how it goes.

Tim

I'm mostly doing this because I need the Go 1.6 toolchain.

@RPiAwesomeness But you don't go visit the dark web with a live install or surf free pr0n sites like @ParanoidPanda

Tim
When I have to move it, I use an external battery pack - that lasts for a few hours if needed

8:52 PM
Why am I not surprised you only upgrade because it gives you better dev stuff??? ;-)

Tim
And my cat enjoying snooker

---^ shooting practice!

user136984
@Tim: I would also advise that you disable your browser's cache and install something like uMatrix so that you have better control over which images load. Because I've had a huge amount of infections which have been browser and image opening software specific, rather than OS specific.

user136984
Because when you go to any page with an image that image is loaded into your cache and memory (even if you disable the cache it stays in memory and can do anything until you close the browser at which point the memory should be cleared) and if that image comes with a script you're doomed, you are also doomed if that image exploits something in your browser or the program used to open it. I have had this happen an awful lot, though ClamAV seems good at find rogue images in one's cache.

user136984
From my understanding if you don't disable your cache those malicious images are loaded each time you start your browser back up again.

Tim
8:54 PM
@ParanoidPanda I have Chrome which sandboxes stuff

@ParanoidPanda erase history when closing browser

Tim
How can an image contain malware/scripts?

user136984
@Tim: I don't know, I just know I've had them...

Tim
lol

user136984
I'm sure I read about scripts coming with images.

8:55 PM
@Tim malformed images --> buffer overrun --> stack over flow --> execute malware pushed on the stack

@Fabby This is true

easy-peasy

Tim
Does chrome protect against that?

exactly fabby beat me to this answer

@Tim nope.

Tim
8:56 PM
hmm

DEP and ALSR do (but not very well: malware writers have gone around that)

Tim
I'm not clearing the cache each time
I like things being fast

user136984
@Tim My belief is that everybody gets them, I just notice because I'm paranoid.

Tim
@ParanoidPanda I think not

@Tim I don't either, but I've got noscript, AdBlock+ and no cookies for any site until I manually ad them.

Tim
8:57 PM
Okay, how can I check?

Oh: and a custom hosts file (well, normally, but not on 16.04 yet)

user136984
@Tim: I have my cache permanently disabled and it doesn't seem affect performance at all.

Tim
I have adblock with a whitelist
@ParanoidPanda How fast is your internet?

@Tim I have adblock+ with full filter

user136984
@Tim Well, I only allow trusted content, I only go to trusted sites, and I scan all new sites, so I think I probably do more than most, and yet I still get viruses from time to time...

8:58 PM
@ParanoidPanda You're wrong. (I check once/month and have never found anything)

user136984
@Tim Slow.

.

Tim
I whitelist Forbes and You Tube
Anyway, how can I check for viruses?

user136984
@Fabby: That either means there is nothing, or there is something so bad that even you can't find. :P

@Tim I use clam:
