@Shads0 a clean start - good idea :)

Did you know that there are studies linking meats and animal-derived foods (cheese/milk) to cancers?

You know whats a better idea? eating cheetos :)
@BartSilverstrim If you ruin bacon for me, I will never forgive you

Sorry...
Seems odd.
But there are a number of them out there.

@BartSilverstrim, is there any studies that show that anything we consume cannot cause cancer? AFAIK, can tell breathing may cause cancer.

I'll be sure to pay @KyleBrandt to blog every 23 hours and 59 minutes

6:01 PM
Breathing around traffic it does.
Don't be an ass, shads0.

<3

I'll have to bookmark the fucking room to get back here...

Back from the Pot Luck. What did I miss?

incidence of heart attack/stroke (cancer?) in the workplace is down after the enactment of those laws restricting smoking in public places.

I used the ultimate threat on @BartSilverstrim and it worked :)

6:03 PM
Heard about that study too.
Vegetarians have a lower incidence of cancer compared to people with a typical Western diet.

@Zoredache living causes cancer
5

That may not be entirely untrue either...since we live longer, and cancers are mutations of cells, living longer means living long enough to suffer from cancer rather than being stepped on by a mastodon.

This has become DepressingChat.SE....WHO'S GOT THE TITTIES?

@Iain NEWS FLASH: Life is the root cause of all fatal disease.

Breast cancer may be related to hormone fluctuations.

Q: sendmail sending mail to recipients I don’t know of; possible spam host

Quintin ParRecently I did an audit of my machine with logwatch and found out that my machine sends around 582 mails everyday. STATISTICS ---------- Messages To Recipients: 582 Addressed Recipients: 582 Bytes Transferred: 444985 Messages No Valid Rcpts: 0 SMTP SESSION, MESSAGE, OR RECIPI...

@ChrisS indeed

0.0001 bitcoins it's cron sending those emails.

So is this encouragement to just not bother living?

To star or not to star, it had the word "breast" in it...but relating to cancer....decisions....

@BartSilverstrim, no you have to accept cancer. Learn to love it. Maybe your version will give you a mutant healing factor.

6:06 PM
We just found out the growth removed from my wife's arm is benign.
Learned that last week.

I did see a study where they're using a combination of tracking cells with infrared light as a cure instead of chemo/radiation.

She gets the stitches out tonight.

@BartSilverstrim Hurrah!

Waiting to see what my dad's surgery found.
Removed something the size of a golf ball from his upper arm.

Is he alright?

6:08 PM
As far as we know, just waiting to know what the thing was they removed.
Some kind of "mass".
I think it's scar tissue of some kind.
He's out and about, he held the flashlight last night while I unloaded 1300 pounds of coal from the truck, so he's just really store and annoyed by the stitches.
I live in a little depressed world sometimes :-)

At least he's alright

My wife hates that I don't sleep all the time like she does. Sometimes I think if I tried to sleep in the afternoon and at night I just wouldn't bother getting up anymore.
But hey! My backups are almost done...

My gf is the same way, goes to bed at freaking 9 sometimes...I can't even feel drowsy until 1 am

/me dances around

@BartSilverstrim Great news man

6:11 PM
I go to bed around 9 or 10...up at 5...although lately I've been crawling out of bed.
I watched Ninja Turtled with my little guy.

@Shads0 Other way around here.. I want to go to bed at 10:30 pm-ish, and one of the following situations always arrives: A) She comes to bed with me, and starts yapping until its 1 am or something like that B) I go to bed alone

I think he likes them because they like pizza.

@BartSilverstrim Good news! Now she can continue crushing me at Words with Friends for the foreseeable future.

and the occasional.. cuddling.

I'm lucky enough that the traffic is opposite where I commute, so its only 10 min, which means 1 min to get ready and the other 9 panicing out the door

6:12 PM
She said you haven't been replying on the game?

@pauska How do you cuddle with the sock?

How long has it been since a game reply came?

Wow. Just...wow.

Q: How to implement cheap LFF 3.5" SATA storage on a HP ProLiant ML350 G6 with 2.5" SFF SAS

nyberghMy workplace currently has a problem. In a series of bad, hasty decisions, a HP ProLiant ML350 G6 server was bought for file server use. The intention was to build a FreeNAS 8 server using cheap 3.5" SATA drives. Only the HP ProLiant ML350 G6 unit we got is equipped for 2.5 SAS drives. Smooth. ...

@MarkM:If something is wonky with the game, you might have to start a new one with her. I think she thought you stopped playing rounds with her.

@BartSilverstrim Like that can't be taken out of context....

6:16 PM
I just found a great album on Spotify (by just random playing stuff from "top albums").. anyone heard of M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming?

Is that...who I think it is?...

@BartSilverstrim Again?!?! Dude, the video is from JUNE.. we've all seen it!

But is that who I thought it was?
at the 1:50 mark?

yes, it's rebecca black

creepy....

6:21 PM
Corey Feldman!
He was Donatello!

That is creepy.

I just watched the TMNT movies with my son.
I didn't realize he was Donnie.

Wait. Movies. Plural?

There were four.

Jesus

6:23 PM
4?? I know I saw 1 and 2... Not so sure about the rest.

There was the first movie, then secret of the ooze, then turtles in time, then a fourth CGI movie (with Patrick Stewart as a voice role...) called TMNT in 2007.

Fuck yeah! Segfault in VirtualBox!

four pack at Target for $12.

balls - I flagged an answer as should be a comment to the question and the OP has now changed the answer to a valid answer :(

2 was dedicated to Jim Henson.

6:26 PM
@Iain I'll dispute it for you
What question is i on?

Made me nostalgic for live-action animatronic costumes like in Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Neverending Story...Critters...

I think that flags should be cleared if the OP makes a change to an answer/question

@Iain A case for being able to cancel flags

TMNT 2 had what is probably the WORST cameo. Ugh.

6:28 PM
@Iain Ok. Disputed

@Iain Or that fact should show up in bold red text next to the Helpful/Invalid buttons on the Mod's screen.

ta - I think I'll go swim with the mSO sharks/dragons and ask for a feature request

It's kind of funny that the whole "I'll dispute so that you don't lose FW" thing works.

It's happened to me before but Chopper and Splatne both checked with me before proceeding

I still wanna choke whoever declined my flag yesterday...

6:30 PM
@Shads0 What time of day?

off topic – 23 hours ago declined - a moderator reviewed your flag, but found no evidence to support it
On: http://serverfault.com/questions/333319/fiber-optic-communication-link-length

@Shads0 Yep

Which got closed around the same time that got declined

@Shads0 Probably SysAdmin, Chop, or MrDenny

Hm, I'm getting downvoted on this question, serverfault.com/questions/333786/… - Is there something obvious I could do to make it fit in better on serverfault?

6:33 PM
I don't care about not getting hte .3 FW (or whatever tiny amount) I care about losing the 10

@nybergh You're asking for a somewhat unsupportable solution to an unprofessional situation.. That's not going to garner much BOFH love.

review is almost completely empty.. alot of people hunting for badge?

Don't worry about the voting too much if you really just want an answer.

@ChrisS mm, true

@pauska expand it to month or all-time :)

6:35 PM
@pauska Most of the people in here are...

@pauska I already has it :D

@MarkM dont go flashing your bling, you might get beaten up :P

I don't get it.. the badge gives you access to show your own review stats? Is that so wonderful?

@nybergh, basically the question works out to asking for a shopping recombination. Which generally get closed.

@voretaq7 It's only a silver.

6:36 PM
@ChrisS: "Fetching metadata signature for 9.0-RC2 from update4.FreeBSD.org... done." om-nom-nom-nom

@pauska It's a badge, after a while it's hard to earn more. ;]

@nybergh Try to organize the question better and isolate the exact question you're asking and cut out irrelevant details. It reads very much like a stream of consciousness.

@pauska Wait, are you talking about Strunk & White or Reviewer?

@nybergh: Don't take it the wrong way, sysadmins are just negative in nature.. we downvote more than we upvote (sadly)

@pauska You're not building from source? Ick.

6:37 PM
Strunk & White shows your own review stats and is a prerequisite to getting Reviewer.
Reviewer doesn't unlock anything except the shiny silver badge. My precious.

@ChrisS that would be a negative. freebsd-update.

@nybergh It's not a terrible question… but it's quite open ended and it's not clear what the specific problem you're trying to solve it.

I don't think the ml350 was a bad question.

@pauska But, but, but... you're system will be 0.0045% slower if you don't use the -O2 flag!!

@MikeyB K i'll try make it clearer and less chatty

6:38 PM
@MarkM so it's just a shiny medal then. I guess I fell of the price bandwagon a long time ago.. buddies always chase after achievments in every single game we play, while I don't care at all..

@MarkM silver badges are hard to get on SF
we're not stackoverflow after all :)

@ChrisS "I don't always use Gentoo Linux. But when I do - I don't have any fucking clue what I'm doing."

BUT ITS A SILVER BADGE

@ChrisS That's why I use -O99999

@pauska Haha, That was mine!

6:39 PM
@nybergh the issue with the server chassis should be solvable.

@MarkM I love you deep heartly.

I am checking my sources

@ScottPack @ChrisS Real men use -ONlogN :-)

@voretaq7 Cock :)

@ChrisS I think you're right, but I don't get it, external constraints can often make it necessary to do something ugly. Doesn't make it a bad question.

6:40 PM
As Requested.

@voretaq7 Kernel borks if you build with anything higher than -O2 last I tried.

@Ward It'd be nice if the solution was always "Toss out what you're trying to use and buy the correct hardware." We all know how often that actually is possible.

@nybergh btw, there many different esata enclosures similar to the 'MicroStorage' box. Search around a bit.

@ChrisS -Os used to work
still does on FreeBSD I think but not sure about with clang/llvm

@Ward I didn't downvote it, so I don't have any real insight to why other than my vague assumptions. =]
@voretaq7 -Os-O2

6:42 PM
@ChrisS Is it a proper subset? I thought there were some space-crunches that weren't part of -O2
mind you I don't spend much time looking at GCC's internals
I like to keep my lunch in my stomach :)

Last time I looked at GCC, yes, it's a subset of -O2.
I've switching my projects to CLANG, haven't dived into it's optimizations much yet....

if the last time you looked was post-4.0 your knowledge is more recent than mine :)

@ewwhite Yeah, I noticed your answer, thanks. I actually was told this wasn't true when I asked the reseller about a spare part which was mentioned in the manual though. Working part time with too many projects, haven't had time to think about this server snafu for some time. I think I'll explore this option as well as the other enclosures option mentioned by @Zoredache

@voretaq7 Just looked for 4.2.1 and you are correct. -Os is most of -O2 plus some other size reducing opts.

cool, my outdated knowledge is accurate!
::updates knowledge cache with new version number, then proceeds to ignore useless factoid as FreeBSD is ditching GCC::

6:46 PM
@nybergh Why isn't returning the server an option?

@MarkM Well I'm glad you asked :D It was ordered by my boss in a haste before the summer holidays to get a big order in to the reseller for discounts
And it stood unopened in a box for months way past the return date

Then the simple solution is to place the paperweight on your boss' desk with a note saying "HERP DERP"

@nybergh You should just fire your boss. He sounds dumb.

The other discounted items were by the way core2duo macbook airs which became obsolete over the summer holidays. These were unopened int their boxes as the i5 macbook airs were announced. I've had my fair share of facepalm moments this fall.

@nybergh . . . what field do you work in?

6:52 PM
@MarkM @voretaq7 my boss is actually good at what he does, as in being a managing producer a cultural centre
the IT part just gets hilarious sometimes

@nybergh . . . Le Sigh

^ What he said

@nybergh . . . Le Sigh

Lé sigh

20-30 ppl working with separately funded projects in one space gets pretty intense from an IT budgeting perspective

Why do people with no IT background or skill attempt to meddle in things which they do not understand?
Back in the good old days when people meddled with the wizards they got turned into newts. NEWTS!
I suppose the equivalent punishment today would be... idunno... replace their workstation with a Commodore PET.

6:55 PM
The life of IT: Getting nothing but mouthful's from users, and having bosses without any real IT knowledge
Just get used to it and work around it.. there is really no other way :)

@nybergh 511784-001 = 6 LFF Cage for that Server. You'd also need the 487936-B21 2 LFF Cage to get all 8 drives in there. The latter is easy to come by, the first is actually a replacement part only, so it might be tougher to find (any you may need additional parts to install it; I don't know).

yes indeed

FIELD CIRCUS POWERS :: ACTIVATE!
Form of: Drunk dude with a screwdriver who will totally destroy your system!

but hey, luckily we live now and not in 2005. we're just the pont where we need collaboration tools. I can get them google apps instead of exchange and some horrible sharepoint intranet

@nybergh sharepoint is still around.
Don't say its name too loudly.

6:56 PM
@Chopper3 Might have an inside scoop into the SFF to LFF conversion of an HP box. He seems to know everyone that's ever worked at HP. Ever.

yep why use microsoft's horrible when there's google horrible out there instead.

@voretaq7 Yeah, but Google Apps is too. Lucklily

suckage is still suckage no matter what the logo

doesn't help me -- I work in healthcare.
:quietly sobs in the corner:

@nybergh Found the backplane for the 6 Drive Cage, it's separate: 551787-001

6:57 PM
@RobMoir Well less horrible, less expensive and absolutely nothing to manage for someone who pretends he is a part-time IT consultant
like me

google apps isnt too bad when it comes to collaboration
and hey - exchange works just fine if you know what you're doing (as in not being a gentoo linux fan)
:)

@ChrisS Oh man thanks.

i dunno, from where I'm sitting using google apps instead of the MS tools is at best "hey, it's great, you only have to put one ball in the meat grinder".

Sure, that's 50% better than having to put both in there, but it kinda misses the point that no one really want to put *any* part of themselves through the meatgrinder in the first place.

ok, enough concrete nightmares for one day, im going home.. later chaps

os/2 is the answer

6:59 PM
Some frustrated IT dude I got drunk with last summer said something about everything within exchange happing over e-mail. Is this true?

cya @pauska

Still screwed up that part number.... 511787-001. Must be time to go home.

@RobMoir The question is "How do I put all my man parts in the meat grinder?"
2

google's tools and microsoft sharepoint are both the best advert for lotus notes on os/2 I've ever seen. And lotus notes and OS/2 are two of the things I hate the most about working in IT

@pauska That line from TomO's question about not wanting to "Roll my own kernel, or any of that other black magic voodoo shit" was hilarious.

7:01 PM
still, you know what they say, all hardware sucks, all software sucks.

@RobMoir Isn't the notes server backend pretty solid?
Or, I've heard that it should be from another planet than Exchange performance wise

Yes. As is sharepoint's and Exchange's. As is Google's. But none of those products are exactly fun to use

I'm going to kill someone. The Exchange guys are supposed to be "testing" upgrades from Exchange 2007 to 2010, but my Outlook client just randomly popped up a dialog box saying that the certificate on a server is invalid. In fact, it's the certificate on ONE OF THE TEST SERVERS.
Why the fuck are they 1) testing this in production. 2) Fucking with my shit.

their idea of test is "lets migrate the whole IT department and see what breaks"

The thing is, my mailbox and everything else are still on the old servers
Which are in a different forest

7:08 PM
@MarkM PERFECT!
No email? NO PROBLEMS.

@voretaq7 The pickle slicer!

@MarkM Just turn off all the Exchange servers. that will fix it

@freiheit I don't even want to go anywhere near Exchange right about now.

@MarkM Is there a big red shiny candy-like button in the room the Exchange servers are in? Maybe pushing that would fix it.

Hi all, just want say hello! My first time at the stackexchange chatt!

7:12 PM
2

Exchange nerds?

@ChristianStahl Well, you're half right.

Why just half?

We all don't deal with Exchange.

@freiheit "Due to popular demand the EPO switches have been replaced by giant degaussers built into the datacenter walls and renamed History Eraser Buttons"

7:13 PM
the top half

@ChristianStahl Because Exchange is Satan's butthole.

@Zoredache You mean to tell me you don't want a mermaid with the bottom half of a lady and the top half of a fish?

Thats so? What do you think about SharePoint then?

@ChristianStahl scroll up.

It's quite likely that everybody in here has had enough exposure to Exchange to have an opinion on it, though...

7:14 PM
@freiheit It's great. Someone else is responsible for it and I never have to hear about it - right?

@voretaq7 But I still would have to use some exchange client

@voretaq7 Somehow when we went from a unix-based mail system that I ran to an Exchange mail system that other people run it created work for me and is overall more of a pain...

hehe, ok - don't really agree with you @voretag7 - but thats ok :-)

@ScottPack, I'll have to think about that. I think there may be advantages in either direction.

@nybergh not true! Exchange can be forced to speak Satan's own SMTP and God's own IMAP.

7:15 PM
FWIW, decade-long unix user and I freakin' loved adminning exchange 2010.

@Zoredache I suppose you could always get into polygamy, but that seems overly burdensome.

@nybergh Apple Mail+Calendar+Contacts works ok, as does Thunderbird. Except when you cancel other people's meetings. The web access is not too painful

@MarkM I did know about the LFF/SFF thing btw :)

I work with an Exchange MVP and he says Exchange is more like a gift from the gods

@voretaq7 depends on the use and corporate policies. Outlook and a single threaded java based ticketing suite I used at a major IT services company almost burned me out on their own :P

7:17 PM
@voretaq7 Except other Exchange users expect to be able to schedule meetings with you...

@freiheit I had forgotten just how messed up that show was.

My only true complaints against Exchange is its liberal violation of the SMTP RFCs, and its utter shit bounce/NDR messages

As in, most people who use Outlook aren't allowed to seek a replacement over standard protocols. Or wouldn't get all the needed features using some other client

Too snarky?

@ChristianStahl Exchange is the most f-ed up MTA I know.

Maybe that's not saying a lot, since I don't know too many MTAs that well.. But it's still the worst.

Is oneboxing broken?

@ChrisS "shiny button! a jolly candy-like button!"

Q: How can i check what's slowing down my network?

I just made my company buy a brand new NAS (raid 0) system to have a disk with fast and shared access to our data on our private network. It s a very simple 2 disk system but if i understood well, this system should be able to read and write arround 2x times faster than a normal disk (so i could ...

People: Do we got endusers for our sins?

7:19 PM
@MarkM, no!

@Aaron "You do know that in "raid 0", the "0" represents the amount of data you will be able to recover when a drive fails, right? – Greg Hewgill 1 hour ago" ← he wins

@Aaron It won't let me onebox my answer to that question

@MarkM I'd rate it about 0.05 TTs

Haha

@Aaron Why can't we vote to send questions back to SO? ;)

7:21 PM
Should I have told him that my smartphone can write at 40MB/s?

@MarkM, you are correct
@freiheit, bomb it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure

It's a bad question, but I don't think it requires close votes.

@MarkM If you're using the "link" link from the Q, that returns a 301, which will not onebox... You have to deref it first an post the actual link.

I see too many people confusing B with b

deref?

7:22 PM
2
A: How can i check what's slowing down my network?

MarkMYou are confusing your units. M = mega m = milli B = byte b = bit When referring to disk usage, we measure throughput in megabytes per second, or MB/s. Notice the capital M for mega and the capital B for bytes. When referring to network performance, we measure throughput in megabits per secon...

Thanks for dropping by, a cool chat indeed - see you

Ahhh

@Aaron You don't program do you? Deref is short for Dereference, the original link is a reference, by way of a 301 redirect, therefor dereferencing the link yields a different link. =]

I'm voting to reopen that.
The big B little b thing is something I've had to explain one too many times.

At least in protected mode it throws a segfault and doesn't just wander into the grass.

@MarkM Ought to just close it as a dupe:

That one could use a better punch line, something about recusion, but I can't come up with the right punch line

Q: Diagnosing the slow performance of my NAS?

mazzzzzI recently built a NAS box on top of ubuntu server. I have an average transfer of about 10mb/sec over gigabit wire to my computer. I was hoping you guys could give recommendations on how to pinpoint where the bottleneck is in this system. To my knowledge the router is only rated at 100mb/sec, ...

@Aaron ^^

nah
too obvious

7:28 PM
Dos Equis Guy would never segfault

@MarkM Tell people to get a faster network as 0.001 bits per second just won't cut it.

ok, how about...

... but when I do, I make sure to "blank" all the references

@MikeyB hahaha, right.

also
I just made a discovery
not sure how terrible it is
if you put a # in a MemeGenerator caption the rest of the caption disappears.
methinks they're making a shell call and not doing escapeshellcommand() or equivalent...

put some bobby tables in there

@voretaq7 Do semicolons show up?

I actually do like that last one better

@MikeyB yeah I tried that next.
I'm not sure what their back-end is

7:31 PM
and I'm not motivated enough to #-newline-[something]

ok, now I'm really going home.

@MarkM including the rm -®f meme?

I saved it to my desktop. You're good to go.

bah, it's just their javascript
that worked.
(and yeah I just used my back button, I'm fucking lazy.)

7:33 PM
Seems like it's just the preview that doesn't like #

Their unicode support is rather lacking :(memegenerator.net/cache/instances/400x/11/11318/11590551.jpg

link not related

@MikeyB yeah, the stuff I typed was ˙∆˚©¥øˆ´ but it got all mangled into the latin-1 charset
I think they do encoding selection (with those lame flags) rather than proper unicode.

@voretaq7 Works for me. Fix your browser :p

7:39 PM
@MikeyB Was that last box supposed to be the Unicode character for a black hole?

@MikeyB works for my browser, not for the meme generator.

@ChrisS No, it was 💩

(those weren't the exact characters)

@voretaq7 Ah, well the problem report was erroneous then :p

@MikeyB of course it was. I'm LAZY!
and when it comes to memegenerator.net I'm a user. I flail on the keyboard and try to avoid wetting myself!

7:48 PM
@MarkM We need a better title for that question. Perhaps "Why do I only get 10MBps performance on my NAS?"

@MikeyB I was thinking that too, but I'm not sure about that title.

@MarkM Better than "what's slowing down my network" :/ But not perfect, yes. Hence the crowdsourcing.

What about something like "Not getting expected performance from 100Mbps Ethernet network."
I feel like this answer is my only legit shot at getting Reversal

@MarkM pfft, you're totally gaming the badge :P

:D

7:55 PM
re: titles, if we're going to make this the bandwidth/units question let's change the title appropriately - "My 100Mbps network is only giving me 10MBps performance - why?"

@voretaq7 I just edited the title. Feel free to muck with it more.

@MarkM I do like that one

@MarkM Yep, second that one.

@voretaq7 That assumes whomever's searching for it knows the difference between the units. And if he does, he doesn't need to ask.

Might want to toss NAS in there somewhere though, or "storage"

7:59 PM
@MikeyB I assume they're not going to know the difference between the units (they're expecting 100MBps because the network is 100Mbps - and capitalization doesn't count right?) - we'll explain that inside.
