Q: What happens when a consumer switch receives a VLAN-tagged Ethernet frame?

netvopeSuppose you connect a trunk port from a VLAN capable network switch to a (VLAN incapable) consumer-grade network switch via a direct cable. Now the former switch send the later switch a 802.1Q-tagged Ethernet frame. What should the later switch do? Drop the frame? Forward the frame? Undefined beh...

don't cross the streams!

Holy new user page Batman!

@Aaron Consumer switches as .1q trunk links are the new hubs.

@Zoredache As useful as a single data point is, I always keep 5 tabs open. Two SE sites, their metas, and chat. That being said, I don't know how many work it like I do.

1:01 AM

Huh, some asshole is going around downvoting me. Nothing major but interesting

@Holocryptic Oh crap I've been spotted
Vote fraud algorithm should kick in if they do it too much..

It was one question and one answer on Nov 20th
within a minute of each other

ITS A TRAP

I need to start answering questions again anyways. Or attempting to
I still feel like I'm not even sure how I got to my current rep. I'm relatively retarded when it comes to things

1:06 AM
You could always just answer lots of the soft questions...

@Zoredache I've said this to Chris too, but I think your idea of a soft question and my idea of the same are several orders of magnitude apart

Something like this for example... serverfault.com/questions/293217/…

Ha, right

Actually pretty much any question that has more then 50 votes....
The problem is timing, you have to get a good answer in on this asap.

Here's my example that had me rep-capped for a few days: serverfault.com/questions/318091/…

1:12 AM
or troll some of these:

The think is I'd probably end up having to research, which takes time.

Someone could go answer this question... serverfault.com/questions/333896/undefined-mysql-connect. Just tell him that he is and idiot for trying to mix one of the stupid llamp packages with packages from the apt package manager.

I'd upvote that.

or you can edit/retag some of those old posts for some small rep bumps

1:14 AM
editing only helps you if you are below 2k.

@Zoredache I can't speak intelligently to that, so I'll let that one go
I think I'll do some weekend runs
Though that probably won't net me much in the way of rep
It might be a good way to just get some studying in

Yeah, weekends are good for finding an interesting question that needs some research

or, if you sit on hold on cisco tac for me, I'll ask a question, make your answer best, and give you some bounty

haha
Unfortunately I'm busy enough juggling all the other crap flying across my desk

@Holocryptic, you don't have to always know everything to be helpful. A portion of my answers are wild speculation, and guesses. Sometimes a random guess from someone can be helpful enough to get a person on the right track.

1:22 AM
Yeah, there's not always enough info to be sure that an answer will solve it

hrm. I suppose that's true. I just dislike talking about things that I don't know inside and out. Which means I usually end up keeping my mouth shut... I guess some of my answers have been guesses as well

@Holocryptic Steal the answer on serverfault.com/questions/333714/… ;)

No harm in deleting your answer

Q: Prevent Hotlinking through CSS via .htaccess within the same website

John SmithThe problems I'm facing is how to prevent hotlinking from within a website. What I want to do is to block www.website.com/user/xxx from hotlinking a CSS, but allow www.website.com/user/aaa to use the CSS using .htaccess. -Both user xxx and user aaa is using www.mywebsite.com/css.css css file, I ...

there's another one you can steal an answer from

I'm having trouble seeing what he did. Was it the open paren on the second RewriteCond?
Unrelated, I just got linked on some news aggregation site. The internet is a scary place

2:16 AM
@Holocryptic (www.website.com/user/aaa <-- Needs a close paren on the end.

or @Holocryptic you can check the 'email' tag, there's usually some bone-headed questions in there

@Aaron This is true
@ChrisS I thought so, I wasn't sure as he edited the question to include the paren, but then in the comments he said he took them out completely

At first he added an extra open paren, not understanding the other guy's comment; then figured it out, removed the extra, and placed the close paren.
Then edited the Q to include the corrected directive
I didn't even know there was a Healthcare IT.SE site.
It's chaulk full of crap questions, no surprises there.

Q: How to leave promiscuous mode in dnscap?

mr-euroHow to leave promiscuous mode in dnscap? dnscap -a makes no difference.

that one can probably be answered pretty easily
@ChrisS are they using MUMPS??!!

Shit, also just remembered I was supposed to reboot some servers at 8pm...

2:24 AM
@Aaron Likely...

I guess a 3hr commute home will do that to you

2:35 AM
8pm seems a bit early, and why tonight when tomorrow night nobody would be using the servers for days?

I updated the BE agents on our new Exchange servers as the backups were failing
I already rebooted them

OIC

downtime of less than a minute
@ChrisS What are you up to this late? You're not usually in here at this time.

Up this late? It's only 9:40. I usually stay up till midnight.
I'm normally playing a MMORPG or FPS though... I haven't killed anyone yet tonight.

@ChrisS Well, I mean you're not usually in the chat room with the other delinquents this late

2:42 AM
I've just got the screen open, wouldn't even know you were chatting except I keep getting the 'thunk'

What do you usually play then?

@Holocryptic Your mom.

MMORPG: Guild Wars (old game, but it's got me hooked)
FPS: GoldenEye Wii

@ScottPack How's she doing? I need to catch up with her

I don't keep up with the latest games... that's too expensive. I used to do that, UT2004 was the last one that I really kept up with though.

2:46 AM
@ChrisS ah, I've heard of GW, but haven't played it. I didn't realize that they had rereleased GoldenEye either..

Now my gaming rig sits in the corner in the basement, this laptop's onboard video chip is more powerful than it's $600 discrete video card. =/

Yeah. I bought a 'gaming rig' and then never actually used it for such. I've stuck to my 360

I play GoldenEye, but otherwise I can't stand console controllers for game play. I still commonly think of the advantage I would have if I could hook a keyboard and mouse up to the Wii...
That and almost every new game has the controls backward. I'm old skool:
Left stick:
-Look Up/Down (reversed); Move right/left
Right stick:
-Move Forward/Backward; Look right/left

I was sad when they killed the MS flight simulator studio

@ChrisS holy balls, how do you manage that? That config makes my head hurt.

2:54 AM
It's the ways games used to be. They perfected the layout, something akin to QWERTY. You use different thumbs for the different operations, so you can do precision movements more easily.
Once you get used to it, there's no doubt you're faster and more precise.

Maybe I'll have to try it. I'm sure I'll get frustrated and chuck my control through the monitor
3

For instance, if I need to turn right to shoot someone, but accidentally push the stick up just a little, I wont end up looking at the sky or ground, I'll just turn and take a step toward the enemy.

It's all about the mouse for shooters.

Interesting scenario

At one point in GoldenEye you get to drive a tank, but they force you to use the left stick to drive the tank, and the right stick controls the turret. It sucks for someone used to splitting those functions across the sticks.
@ShaneMadden Absolutely; there's no doubt keyboard and mouse are 10x faster and more precise for FPS, but some games are for consoles only.
And if you want to keep up with everyone else on PCs you have to keep buying new and expensive hardware; consoles have an advantage there.

3:00 AM
Don't get me wrong, I loved playing FPS on my computer. And it was insanely difficult for me to get used to a controller. Maybe I'll updated my rig at some point and buy some games to go with it

@ChrisS True

@ChrisS I'm pretty sure that vehicle controls are fucked no matter what game or console you're on

The vehicles in UT were easy to drive, but that was also keyboard and mouse.
WASD drove, mouse shot whatever weapon. Exactly the same as walking your character around the levels.

I actually attended a LAN party once upon a time. One of the best nights of my life at that time. Ok.. maybe ever. I don't really have a life to speak of.
although I can't even remember all the games that we played

Last time I LAN partied was either Diablo or Diablo II, can't remember now.

3:08 AM
Tribes was one of the games
that was pretty fun

Yep, it was Diablo II. Watching the preview reminded me.

I just started playing Diablo II a few weeks ago. I have Diablo III preordered

I've never played Tribes, heard of it long ago though.
SE should host a Quake server or something for us to have a mini-tournament on.

That would be friggin awesome
They host a BF3 server
Except I already bought that for 360. I'm not double dipping

BF3 looks great, but all I've got these days are laptops with builtin vid chips. I don't think it'd be the same at 3 fps.

3:14 AM
I wish I could remember the other games we were playing that night
granted, that was almost 13 years ago...

Yeah, I'm not friends with anyone who was at that LAN party anymore. Funny how life takes you in different directions.

These guys were people from my dads work when we were stationed overseas. I didn't know anyone there, but my dad thought I might have a good time
So we packed up our crappy Compaq Presario (I think) and hauled everything over there

In case you need another addiction, Guild Wars is free to try (8 hours) and can be as cheap at $20 for the full game (first "expansion" only) or $30 for the first 3 expansions all in one (Trilogy Edition). =]

@ChrisS heh I may look at it. I have a lot in my game queue right now though.
Skyrim is all encompassing right now
Assassins Creed will probably follow

Ah; well GW is a time sink, something like WoW.

3:18 AM
Not sure after that

Probably doesn't hold up well agaist Skyrim either
I've got other friends in it too, so it's a bit of a group game. Really helps getting a leg up too.

I definitely need more things to sink my money into :)
I didn't even finish Batman before Skyrim came out.
Also, I think I figured out why I'm useless with technology. I spend time gaming.
Or reading
but not reading about technology
Although maybe sleeping with the laptop in my bed will have some kind of osmosis effect...

I don't think those things are mutually exclusive. Unless I've been imagining all those games.

possibly
I wasn't kidding about the laptop either. I've been doing it the last week I've been on call...

3:50 AM
Just finished Euro Trip, hadn't seen it before.. It's up there, probably as good as Hall Pass or some of those.
And I'm off to kill something.

Haven't seen that one. I'm off to bed or something similar now myself

1 hour later…
5:03 AM
@Holocryptic Or it'll just overheat and burn something important ;)

3 hours later…
7:47 AM
G'day
@Holocryptic lots of carp questions and great answers go unnoticed at the weekends :(

8:05 AM
Morning

8:53 AM
howdy people

hello

how is everyone ?

Bart De Vos has the sniffles.
But he soldiers on

great !

@KennyRasschaert Ugh, tell me about it

9:00 AM
I'm sitting at the same desk, I should keep my distance.

@KennyRasschaert Shouldn't you be awk-ing or sed-ing something?
:)
New user page seems a bit much, no?
overload

I agree, I feel like it should go back to the old page, with just a button added.
[Advanced]

@BartDeVos Cram all sorts of stuff into one place, making it harder to see.

Can't see the forest for the trees.

Make individual items available on their own, but in a bigger, uglier format.
All in all, yuck.
But it's just the profile page, so easy to ignore.

9:04 AM
Maybe we're being just like the people on Facebook.
"OMG they changed something! This new Facebook sucks!"

OOOH NOOOZ CHANGE!!!888!!!88!!!

I'm afraid I've lost it with Diana serverfault.com/q/333992/9517 I really do wish that you could have an ignore user list

"You really need to speak to your manager about some very basic unix education."
Hard truth.

yeah I'm going to delete my answer when she's had time to read it and keep away
The other guy doesn't understand the answer he's given either - he just googled it and pasted it in

@Iain Not a solaris guy myself but usermod?

9:14 AM
@BartDeVos That's what I answered. Checked a Solaris box to see where they keep the bash, it's in /usr/bin/.

usermod like passwd -e requires root privs and I don't think she wants to use them

Hell no, keep her away from root or sudo
:)

Well, it's the right way to change your shell
can you imagine she decides one day to try ksh?

if you use ldap | nis | nis+ repositories then passwd -e allows normal users to change the shell, if you use the files repository then you have to be root for that too

she'll have ksh in bash in tcsh
SHELLCEPTION

9:18 AM
:)

exec /path/to/shell is the way to do what she wants

So, how is your russian(?) serverfault.com/questions/278078/… (check the edit history)

@BartDeVos flagged as not an answer

@lain sorry to sayed that but your solution isn’t answer my question , maybe you should learn about Linux administration please look on my question again – Diana 1 min ago
oh god I lol'd
It's like she wants to be hated

Help me out: visit this question: bicycles.stackexchange.com/q/7014/2302
I think if enough people visit via that link, I get bonus entries in the bike giveaway contest.

9:27 AM
@Iain dropped her a line saying get trained before they ask again
I've got a firewall logger that's generating hundreds of IOPS because it's using ext3 and just sending a stream of <4kb writes to the volume - is there anything I can do, I've looked at all the ext3 flags but is there a better FS that'd hold off on its physical writes and just cache everything for a second or whatever?

@Chopper3 I think that would be a great question to ask on the main site

Yeah, true - thinking out loud

I know ReiserFS has a setting for "Write Cache"
had to turn it off once, but no clue how it actually works.

@Chopper3 thanks - she needs more help than asking questions here can provide

10:10 AM
thanks BDV

10:46 AM
I've just read that shell question @iain answered. I need a bit of a sit down after that one, mind blown

11:22 AM
Thank you Sonya-with-a-heavy-Bangladeshi-accent, but I think I know what 'cloud' means more than you do and I'm not likely to want to buy any of it from you. -click-

just had the insurance co's agent here, he suggests replacing the san immediatly.. not sure about the rest of the gear yet, he was pretty confident that it wont break down - but he couldnt guarantee it either

talking of calls from 'overseas' - I get a few calls to home from people trying to sell me stuff - I used to tell them to go fuck themselves but I've got a new tactic - I tell them that whoever they called for it dead - it's the only thing that seems to stop them

11:54 AM
@chopper3: So, did you like the looks of the SAN? :(
oy, new summary page on serverfault :o

the dusty one - yeah, nasty

"you're cold calling, I'm cold answering ... whose life sucks more at this very moment?"

@Chopper3 try: "Everyone you could ever want to speak to is dead, including me. I've been 6-feet under for 4 months now, but BT still seem to be able to get calls through to me..."

@pauska I just don't believe the people managing your building renovation could be that dumb
not after you explicitly warned them, I mean.

The great part is that I found the e-mail they sent us after the information meeting, where they ensured us that the server room would be properly secured, and that absolutely no dust would enter
so this is a pretty solid case to be modest..

12:02 PM
Nice. At least you've got a smoking gun.

I would say so
@SmallClanger going on @pauska's mood yesterday, I think the builders are very worried about smoking guns...

@RobertMoir I'm waiting for the followup question: 'HP have cancelled my warranties as it seems that clogging the fans with the blood and chunky viscera of several unidentifiable builders puts them "Outside a normal operational environment". Should I ask for a refund?'

works for me

good $time_of_day

haii

12:10 PM
my proposal on mSO is still head above water :)

Oh Thank goodness Rob's changed his name back..

hi @TomOConnor

did you not like my new name?

@SmallClanger Going all Dexter on them would feel kind of nice right now

@RobMoir Too much bronie.

12:12 PM
@RobMoir it wasn't as bad as when bart changed his avatar to a choppatar but it was up there on the confusion chart

hahaha
I enjoy almost any well produced animation... deal with it ;-)
we should have more avatar 'events'...

AFternoon guys

hello

@Chopper3: Is the virtualconnect modules only available for c7000? I can't find it on the c3000 spec sheet

12:45 PM
@pauska you can use it for the 3000

yeah, all inters work in the 3k too
which specific inter are you looking at

12:58 PM
the guy didn't have a cache module

@Chopper3: the 10gig one, we're iscsi
or a 10gig switch.. can't decide
im dumb when it comes to blade systems

Me too. And I wanna figure out if we can build a render farm in a blade chassis

Right. It's official. A coffeepot with a timer is officially the best thing that has ever happened.

@TomOConnor: hahah, I just saw the tracert hack video. Great find!

1:19 PM
So.. one of the naming schemes here is <adjective>-<colour>.. the colour pertains to the class of machine.. Red green blue, white and black.
red green and blue are workstation class, red are beefier than green are beefier than blue.
white are macs.
black are servers.
I've just found a box called "barry-white"

G'day shitheads <3

@TomOConnor And I thought only Americans got into dumb situations....

1:36 PM
I found 2.5m of 16pr OM3 on the sidewalk outside.. Absolutely no use for it, but i picked it up anyway.

@TomOConnor So if I'm reading that right, that poor girl got trapped while mucking around with a horse in her jammies. Isn't that illegal in most places?

'sup, noobs?

@ScottPack hahah

WTF is a Clothes Horse? Looks like a drying rack to me.

@ChrisS That's what I said

1:51 PM
@ChrisS Whereas American men seem to be interested in 'racks', I think British men must be interested in 'horses'. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.
2

@ScottPack At least we have our priorities straight.

how the hell did that woman do that

NEW DASHBOARD
SWEET

2:07 PM
@MarkM You're probably right on the morgue thing. Very similar kind of feeling. The whole site up there has a really cool feeling though. Fantastic example of Victorian architecture.

Morgues are creepy
There was a family retrieving a body while the phone techs were showing me where the PBX in that building is
I was like, uhhhhhhhhhhh this is awkward

I'll bet.
Eyes forward, you're here to do a job.
@MarkM Over the past year or so I've been installing monitoring boxes (primarily IDS) across campus, so I've been getting a great tour of campus. It's amazing where the wiring closets end up sometimes. I feel sorry for the guys who had to find space for an MDF in a continuously occupied 200 year old building.

yep
Some of our closets are in the most ridiculous places and are just 1/4 height racks bolted to a wall with in rooms that are for other shit.
You have no idea how glad I am that physical infrastructure isn't a concern of mine.

@MarkM Tell me about it. I went into one closet where all the equipment is hung vertically on big honkin L-brakets. That part isn't so bad, the scary thing was the room had hot water and steam pipes going through it. So the ambient temperature is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15000K.. Again, one of those old buildings where this was the best they were able to get.
So I added it to my risk analysis spread sheet and felt a great surge of pity.

2:20 PM
As long as my systems work right to the core switch, everything else is somebody else's problem
I hated that infrastructure was so screwed up at first, but a year or two ago I gave up on caring about other people's jobs

Yeeey
Migrated crap

A: Debian 6 home server

EzeymeI would recommend Webmin when you want to use a webui for configuring your server. Most of the needed configs you can do in there. Concerning your other query, you're doing a lot in once, just do everything one after the other and take your time. When you sort all out (most things can be found o...

@RobMoir What is this, I don't even....

i know, right

@MarkM I used to get cranky with both the sysadmins and the network guys. Now I just make my recommendations and not worry too much about it.
So, what did we decide. Throw a flag on the SO version with a message like, "This is shit and never should have been migrated in the first place."?

@ScottPack This should've gone to SU?

2:23 PM
@BartDeVos: Click on the originating question from SO and flag it with "Serverfault does not answer home server question, this question should have been migrated to SuperUser or Ask Ubuntu."
it's really the only way to teach those morons to stop migrating crap to us

@ScottPack I just did that, slightly more politely but that was the gist

@ScottPack I did that once and it got declined with a nasty message that flagging it was useless since a diamond didn't migrate it and they can't control their users

@MarkM Keep doing it anyways

@MarkM Welcome to SO

@MarkM Meh, I don't care about SO. So as a result, I don't care about FW.

2:25 PM
@MarkM so far all my similar flags have been considered helpful and sometimes the mod even acts on them

Unfortunately, flagging is about the only response we can have. Bringing it up on meta is worse than useless.

@markm @ScottPack I flagged something same as @iain and got it marked helpful and the question closed properly 'over there'.

@ScottPack At least bringing it up on meta provides some humor

@Shads0 the humour being in the eye of the beholder - if you're defending the shitstorm then it's no fun

2:53 PM
We should bring up the question of making SO defunct now that we have programmers.se on m.SO just to see what would happen :)
3

I'd be interested to see the latest migration statistics, as I think we've gotten better at not migrating crappy questions
@Shads0 I have a laptop tray that I use for that. So the only thing I have to worry about is kicking it over the edge in my sleep :)

3:10 PM
SO -> SF reject rate is only 14%, but they migrated 914. That's over 120 rejects.
We only migrated 70 their direction, even if the reject rate were 100% we'd still only be half as many bad questions as them.

While I agree the numbers are bad, SO does seem like an overall 'bigger' site than SF...at least to me after being here a while.
If that makes any sense

Well, yeah, SO has 13x as many users as SF. The problem, and it happens on every site, is that you've got people with migrate abilities who don't pay attention to mod, meta, chat, etc; and they're the ones who keep migrating crap.

how many of the questions they sent to us are unloved ?

Just the other day I had to get one of our Mods to hammer a crap Q before it got migrated to SU.
Or do you mean unanswered?

@ChrisS I know - I thought maybe you'd done the analysis already

People that don't capitalize units are the scourge of the earth. I know this is a bit basic for a blog about Systems Administration, but I have to explain this far too often than I'm comfortable with. Seasoned admins should universally share this pet peeve. When your high school Chemistry of Physics teachers were yelling at you to use a lowercase m for milli and a capital L for liter, h

@ChrisS 10k+ thing I presume? :)

@BartDeVos Yep
I can't find in the Query builder where you can determine if a Question was migrated....

@ChrisS OTOH, the other day an SF mod migrated a crappy question to SU. I'd posted on Vote to close that it should just be closed, and it got closed on SU after he moved it.

Call him out on it if you haven't already. If I notice someone doing something dumb I make sure they know... Hope other would do the same for me. =]

I couldn't decide if "capitalize your units" was about finance or some strategy game. Turns out neither

@iamanesxhost, Where twitter is useful.
Less than 160 characters? No thanks.
717k tweets, 97 followers, following 3 users

@wfaulk Yep, it's as basic as it gets.

Seriously.. What?

@TomOConnor Public heartbeat? :)

@TomOConnor Flexing your Twitter API chops?

717k tweets, 97 followers
who follows shit like that?

3:36 PM
@BartDeVos That's what jumped out at me too

monitoring-parsers?

@BartDeVos Twit spam bots.

setting up a twitter account for my twitter hating boss and subscribing it to that feed then telling it to email him each time it updates... trollface

@BartDeVos It must be.
friend of mine found it.

::looks around::
:quietly unplugs a rack of servers:

3:51 PM
I'm not so sure Data Explorer actually has the full set of data... I'm pulling up the post history (which should include migration status) of a Question I know was migrated, but it doesn't show the migration event.
Yeah... just pulling a list of all migration events: (0 row(s) affected)

Is there a better way to idiot proof "put more paper in tray 2", save doing it yourself? "Load Tray 2 Plain A4" is too difficult when displayed on printer screen, so they give me a call. And then I tell them to put more paper in Tray 2 (not tray 1, that's the side tray) and they still can't get it right?
OMGWTFBBQ.

@tombull89 get a lackey that you can sent printer problems to :)

@tombull89 Buy bigger trays. Surely it must be possible to get 2500 sheet trays

@tombull89 I put labels on each drawer saying what type of paper it takes; most printers only take the one type....

@MarkM I am the lackey...

3:57 PM
@tombull89 Are you paid for your time?

@tombull89 Time for you to list a "intern" position at some local schools then.

Damnit @jscott, way to steal my thunder.

@TomOConnor I think ours are pushing it at two ream's worth. But they don't put a ream worth in there, they just go and nick it from a nearby printer.

SO have migrated th Debian Home server question to SU now :)

We have a "technical sheet" next to the printer:
A4: The paper you use al the time
Tray 1: Red sticker
Tray 2: Blue stricker....

3:58 PM
@ChrisS Not a bad idea...we've got a lot of printers.
@MarkM Yes...boo.

@tombull89 Well, then get an intern :)

@tombull89: Cache all the incoming print jobs until you have 16, then print them 8-up.
