Should we correct the capitalization in the Question?? Should also add the

Aw man. It's getting upvotes now.
Son of a bitch. There goes reversal. I now have no vested interest in what you whackjobs do to this question.

"not getting expected performance" could also be a lousy title for "Our idiot contractor tied the ethernet cable around a fluorescent fixture, coiled it up behind the microwave, and made a Zorro "Z" in the patch panel -- Why is the network performance sucking?"

@voretaq7 Good thing it's not the canonical answer for all performance problems :)

@MarkM; as long as we're polishing this turd, might as well change your answer to the 3rd person, take out "you/r" and make it a generic "Data units can be confusing..."

@ChrisS I disagree with that on principal. They're not confusing, just to that guy

8:02 PM
that's a much easier answer.
("Quit IT and join an Amish community.")
2

Couldn't hurt to have a generic 'data units' question. Not this one though.

lol; I see you're point. Perhaps I meant to say "confusing to the uninitiated"

The question is still asked in first person. I think it would be weird to have it worded differently.
Feel free to edit my answer though
I don't care

Meh, you've already got my upvote anyway.

Unless you convert it to a CW with so many edits. Then I'll hunt you all down and spit in your dinners.

8:04 PM
I haven't edited it yet, don't want to on that account.

@MarkM Joke's on you: I don't eat dinners!

@voretaq7 Then you're already a miserable person and I can skip you.

Wow, answering 2 basic questions got me a total of +40 o.x

@Shads0 It adds up fast

I'm more amazed by getting upvotes for obvious things

8:07 PM
I'm at +70 right now for telling a guy that Mb isn't MB.

....

@Shads0 Everything's obvious if you know it already :)
2

@MarkM not true: Sometimes you know so much shit you forget half of it

That's a good excuse

@voretaq7 Sometimes?! Hell, you don't know enough yet. That happens to me constantly. =P

8:10 PM
well this didn't go so well so far meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/113253/…
if someone flags your question/answer do you gte informed of the flag ?

@Iain Not that I'm aware

@Iain No
Not that I know of
Someone with a diamond might want to delete @Zoredache and Greg's comments from the 100Mbps question. Now that it doesn't mention RAID 0, it seems out of place.

My point was somewhat still related. I doubt a cheap 2 disk 'nas' is going to perform as well as he expects...

Oh, I totally agree. It just looks out of context because the question doesn't mention RAID in it anywhere any more.
also, a single shitty 5.2k WD disk should be able to push 40 MB/s

@MarkM Sure you don't mean Mb/s? ;)

8:24 PM
POSITIVE
Back to your cage!

Goddamnit, how do you post a link in comments, it seems to not work the same as the question/answer box

[link text](http://suckit.org)
That also works in the Q&A boxes. I find it easier when answering from my iPad.

Aren't you fancy Mr. iPad person

I try

I find it easier almost all the time; plus if you have to correct a link it's right there next to the text, no hide'n'seek.

8:36 PM
I guess I'm old school with my html tags

Those are nice for copy'n'paste jobs..

HTML links work?

yep

@Shads0 'aich tea emm ell?
@MarkM HTML in general works, subject to some caveats

As in, it doesn't work in comments ><

8:38 PM
@Shads0 and some tags get stripped

@voretaq7 Hm, I didn't know that.

documentation is addictive. Really odd

We need a petition to have Rob keep his name as DJ Pon3

Because you like it or because frequent changes distress you?

Both

8:41 PM
I'm keeping the avatar for a good while either way, I surely do like that

Because it's for teh lulz

ponies!

Ponies that you can't watch in the UK! ;-)

Your country, therefore, sucks....now give me your tophats

@RobMoir really?

8:45 PM
that's what it says @voretaq7

@RobMoir youtube.com/watch?v=81RN3olYIsQ try this lousy low-fi version?

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.
Sorry about that.
cool that works

good stuff

@MarkM That is a downright lovely office. Too bad you have such a shitty monitor.

8:54 PM
@ScottPack It's a lenovo all in one

@MarkM Oh, so my statement still applies.

It's a 26" and there's a 19" 4:3 Dell that's vertical off-camera
Hahaha
Thanks for your compliments, sir. The only thing I'm missing is a window.

@MarkM I greatly miss my window. My current office is large, thus allowing me plenty of room to spread out. With the exception of my pictures, it's very sterile and bland. Complete with light canary walls and light grey Steelcase furniture :\

The office I came from was originally designed to be a small science lab. Tile floor, rubber counter tops, etc. It was very roomy, but it sucked. My current office is about 1/3 of the size, but it's with the rest of the department and it's got cool things like a rug.

@RobMoir would you do the honours and let me know the +/- on this please ?

9:00 PM
It's also about 30 feet from the main data center, whereas the old office was across the campus.

@MarkM windows are overrated.
I have one, and right now I have road noise because it's raining and everyone's tires are hissing.

@voretaq7 Lack of windows severely limit my foliage choices, though.

@MarkM Ficus artificialis, var. plasticus.

Can't get anything that flowers in strictly artificial light except maybe a peace lily, and even they don't like not having light on saturdays and sundays
@voretaq7 Even my lucky bamboo and golden pothos think that fake plants are lame
and those two weeds barely count

@MarkM I used to have a philodendron. It got as large as it good on my grow lamp and now sits on the window sill of a guy a few doors down. I visit it from time to time.

9:02 PM
WTF is going on in this edit history? serverfault.com/posts/327908/revisions

@ScottPack I don't have a grow lamp or anything on a timer. I'm hoping the pothos doesn't mind no light on saturdays, sundays, and vacations
The lucky bamboo will be fine, you cant kill those if you try
Can someone with more storage knowledge than I correct the guy that commented on this answer?

A: Hot spare or extra parity drive in RAID array?

ZoredacheWhen performance matters more then the possibility that you may lose two drives quickly. Adding a second parity, means that RAID controller, is going to have to compute that second parity. Although if I was really concerned about performance I probably wouldn't be looking at RAID5 at all. Also...

@MarkM OH YES YOU CAN!

I know he's incorrect, but I don't know enough to put up a real argument if he gets testy.

we had lucky bamboo in a datacenter at one place I worked. It died about a month later :)

@voretaq7 Probably got bummed out by the noise.

9:17 PM
@ScottPack we're not sure - it didn't all die
it was a 2-foot container between the AC units, one of those tiered ring thingies - and random shoots just turned yellow and died off

@voretaq7 what kind of water did you have it in?
Tap water kills it fast. They're pretty sensitive to fluorine and chlorine

having it there did actually make an appreciable difference in room humidity though -- Before they put it in the AC units were constantly in humidify mode trying to maintain 30%. With the plant we got it to stay steady around 37-40% no problems

My bet is it was either chemicals in the water, or too much fertilizer which will have the same effect.

@MarkM they probably gave it tap water
or whatever came out of the office filter
if a plant can't thrive on whatever came out of the charcoal filter canister it's too much of a pussy for my office :P
actually have you considered a christmas cactus?
those things are unkillable. Might never flower, but totally unkillable.
I have one in my house that's fallen over like 10 times and is now in 3 separate pots. And one cutting still hanging out of a water glass on my desk waiting for me to get dirt for it

I have a few moon cactuses at my apartment
I think they need more than just 8 hours of artificial life 5 days a week
My window situation really kills me

9:23 PM
@MarkM If he gets testy I'll find something more authoritative than wikipedia ;)
And wow, raid6 parity calculation is rather fast on my laptop:
raid6: using algorithm sse2x4 (10466 MB/s)
Gone are the slow old days.

Yeep
Ok, I'm going home
screw you guys

@MikeyB Everybody has an idle CPU core and gobs of RAM nowadays...

I'm using SW RAID6 instead of RAID10 on my 4-drive personal server here. But that's because it's a Supermicro box with a shitty SCSI controller and the access patterns of RAID10 make the controller die. RAID6 is fine :)
Of course, RAID6 is probably a better bet anyways.

@voretaq7 We run our lucky bamboo out of the Pur pitcher. And based on how hard our water is...yowza. It has all the minerals it could ever hope for.

I use RAID -1 for all of my important data.
(Ramdisk)

9:31 PM
Personally I use NRARFD - Non-Redundant Array of Rapidly Failing Disks. I can't see why my RFC hasn't been accepted for it though...

Q: Is it possible to establish that type of connection based on ICP/TP protocol?

jtt89I have cable modem (one of those Motorollas), ehternet cable connected to desktop pc (usb would be probably the same), Windows7 - host, Virtual Box -> CentOS6 - guest; no static IP, no router I am trying to connect guest and host together and both to the Internet, there are suppose to be 3 ways ...

^^ ICP/TP?
Insane Clown Posse over Toilet Paper?

Reviewing a test for a class, found this question: Which of the following are *not* good conductors of electricity:
A. Copper
B. Water
C. Gold
D. Rubber

Changing Outlook to use HTTP first when connecting to Exchange is a nightmare. I despise trying to find that setting.

non-ionic water is actually an excellent insulator; water typically has salt running around in it though, which ionizes the water molecules.

9:40 PM
@ScottPack It's not that bad - it's just that it doesn't configure with Autodiscover, which makes it a bit more of a PITA.

@Driftpeasant I presume that the autodiscovery server must be configured to set that setting?

@ChrisS seawater perhaps, depending on the level the question is aimed at 'water' would be an OK answer.

@ChrisS (pure) water is actually the WORST conductor on that list

@ScottPack AFAIK there isn't a way to configure that in Autodiscover. I've never found a way to tweak some of the settings past the defaults there.

The answer book says Water is wrong. =]
But you are correct, pure water conducts less than rubber.

9:42 PM
tap water probably conducts less than rubber

@ChrisS The answer book was written by someone who didn't have a way to produce proper laboratory-grade dihydrogen monoxide.
@Iain Tap water by me is full of dissolved salts (including iron compounds) - it's a reasonable conductor.

@Driftpeasant While we do have an autodiscovery server in play, that's a checkbox that is not set. And since smb is blocked to our Exchange servers, well, it makes the initial Outlook load pretty shitty until you manage to find and tick the checkbox.
@voretaq7 Same here. My tap water has so many freaking dissolved solids it could probably be used to print circuit traces.

@ScottPack Given the overhead in the RPC/HTTPS connection, why wouldn't you have standard MAPI open to your Exchange server?

I'm sure it was written by someone who simply assumed the colloquial truism that water conducts electricity. For safety reasons I wouldn't advise a layman otherwise.

@Driftpeasant I dunno. I am completely uninvolved in Exchange work except as a user.

9:45 PM
@ScottPack Just seems odd to me. Ah well.

I try not to get involved in such tom foolery as Windows based systems.

@ScottPack Dude, Windows is the greatest OS in the world. Far superior to all others. This message sponsored by Microsoft.
@voretaq7 I dunno - I once saw pure water conduct the Philadelphia Philharmonic in Holst's The Planets, and it was an AWESOME conductor.

@ChrisS hmm perhaps because I worked in electronics for a few years I never think of (fresh) water as a conductor

10:19 PM
@Iain as of right now, after I voted, +8/-8

@RobMoir ta - it took an early dive but it's been recovering for a while

i think there's a real instinct to downvote everything there

Hmm It's a hard place - I guess they see so much carp but yes, they are trigger happy.

for sure

10:29 PM
I rarely feel strongly enough about something to be bothered getting involved there I'd rather spend time here

i hear you, but i've been making an effort to get involved there to see if it helps us put our points across if we do more than turn up to complain

I'd like to think the 3 questions I've still got there are constructive rather than moaning.

I would agree with you but that doesn't mean they do. I think their perception is that we only turn up to complain - constructively or not.

I think that feeling could be alleviated by having a separate meta meta for discussing bug/feature requests network wide issues etc and leave mSO for discussing SO

I absolutely agree but I guess the powers that be don't wanna hear it

10:37 PM
and that's because SO is the network ...

they need a meta.StackExchange for the whole site

another firebind spammer serverfault.com/users/101832/carl-galt

@Driftpeasant As with any good orchestra they ignored the conductor entirely and followed their section leads.
@RobMoir Actually I think they need to accept enhancement requests from each site on their own Meta.

10:56 PM
Or that @voretaq7, but i do think a cross-site perspective on things is good too

anyone know where to find the live feed for the stackexchage podcast ?

I think if that RFE were raised on mSF it would be +a million and "YES PLZ!"
The tendency on mSO is "if it wasn't proposed by someone with 100k rep from SO downvote it and say no" - often without taking the time to understand the proposal/request or evaluate the benefits it might have for all the sites.
@RobMoir I agree with that, but the problem is then we have the same SO userbase swooping in with Not Invented Here syndrome
@Iain there's a podcast? ::fake innocence::

I dunno, I can see both sides I can guess.
Podcasts? Do people still do those?

yeah and I understand the implied oxymoron of a live podcast too

but I usually listen to them async through the rss feed

11:00 PM
I listen to them on my phone
@voretaq7 that works - just missed it

Part of me says we should let our proposals build up inertia on mSF and then flag for migration to mSO. That's cheating, but it would avoid that initial flurry of downvotes
3

I like it

That's something I could get behind,you'd have to get our mods onboard so it wasn't migrated early

Do enough people even look at our meta for that to make a big difference? At most it would get you 5-15 upvotes.

I guess all we can do is our best
but there's something to be said anyway for letting something get votes here before migrating it, a chance to build up what momentum we do have

11:05 PM
@Zoredache thats's probably sufficient to keep you afloat

I don't think it would outweigh a tide of SO folks screaming "that didn't come from us", but if there's enough evidence that it's a good idea maybe we'll get the upvote pile-on rather than the downvote pile-on

well no but like I said before, we can only do all that we can do

maybe if we bake the SO guys cookies.
Laced with sedatives.

uh huh

@Iain At least he makes it easy to find him, always using the same name

11:11 PM
nothing wrong with a change now and then

@voretaq7 screw the sedatives, why not poison?

poison is murder.
If they happen to eat too many tasty barbital-laden cookies, well that's an unfortunate accident :)

and finally my mSO question goes +ve - I like your last comment over there @voretaq7

I really don't care about my flag weight :-x

I don't any more :)
my comment too snarky serverfault.com/q/333187/9517 ?

11:19 PM
@Iain bastard

@Shads0 indeed :P

not snarky enough
echo 'rtfm' | banner
...if I ever actually buy a plane I will see if the FAA will let me change the registration to "N0RTFM"

how was I to know they didn't have ufw enabled ?

it would be totally worth any FAA fees for the custom N number, AND having to spell that mess out phonetically in all my radio calls.
@Iain it doesn't matter - Your command still works.

@voretaq7 Beat me to it.

11:25 PM
I think only the last 2 can be alphabetic

It says "yo bitch - you hasta enable tha' firewall first!"
@Aaron yeah I think so too under current rules

I wonder who has the R- registrations though
sadly it appears unallocated

@voretaq7 I don't use ufw
anyway - it's late - I'm off to bed

@Aaron Yea - R and RT aren't used

oooh they rolled out the new user pages to SF too

11:29 PM
In devops we not use expression 'shoot yourself in foot'. We use expression 'use NFS in cloud'.
2

and yeah the current FAA N number rules are 3 digits and 2 letters/digits, zero is disallowed as the first digit.
But if I buy a nice ancient wooden thing I might be able to register it as NC- or NX- RTFM

or you can do canadian ones
C-RTFM

@Aaron who the hell wants a canadian-registered plane? :)
although the beaver-biters will let me do my own maintenance -- it's just that the FAA won't let the plane into US airspace if you do that. <sigh>
anyway, 6:30 - go-home time for me. LaterZ

11:45 PM
woah, ninja implementation, my profile is now the new one on SF
