the theme has at the root a slideshow of photos (because it's a photog theme)

And this one (the last one) is especially crappy. Due to the logs it takes 1ms but it has no LIMIT which may cause a timeout IIRC
or mysql is configured to have a default LIMIT of 0,3 which it seems to not have

Anonymous
@kaiser what is LIMIT in mysqland?

It's startrow, endrow

well, that query only touches the eight photos i've uploaded

any other ways?

You add a second theme
This "child theme" can override stuff from the "parent theme" on a per file basis

@kaiser I refuse to read that link, and instead cling to my belief that this is a theme that screams, poos, and throws rattles at the users.
(mine is more fun!)

agree :)
If the parent theme is built right, then you can just for e.g. throw a new single.php file in your child theme and it will be used instead of the parent themes file.
This makes your changes update safe. so if you update the parent your changes aren't lost as they live in a child theme

"Fish Heads" is a novelty song by comedy rock duo Barnes and Barnes, featured on their 1980 album Voobaha. It has often been played on the Dr. Demento show, and is the second-most honored song in Demento show history. The song is about fish heads and all the things they can (or, more often, cannot) do, such as playing baseball, wearing sweaters, dancing, playing drums, or being seen drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women. It is accompanied by a high-pitched chorus, achieved by speeding up the tape, which repeats the original's chorus. Actor Bill Paxton directed a...

@voretaq7 MySQL can handle a DB that size. No problem. I've got a couple 13GB DBs where the largest table is about 4GB (12M rows). Really no problems unless somebody runs a stupid query that joins that table to itself.

@freiheit MySQL and I are.... um.... "not on speaking terms"

yeah, it's written in PHP, but the owner of the company is trying to drive it more and more towards JavaScript. It got backbone on board now. And a templating bastard that is something between Mustache and Underscore. Which is built using Underscore. And not documented. Anywhere. Not even in code.

Wordpress (and Drupal and Moodle and a lot of other OSS projects) supports Postgres but is really written mostly using MySQL and you're seriously better off using the DB the project supports best.
@voretaq7 Here, you can have these Oracle Databases. Underneath the pain and misery there really is a great DB engine.

I'll be honest, I rule out projects if their Postgres support is shit.
If you can't be bothered to support the good open source DB I can't be bothered to contaminate my environment with that shit :P
@freiheit No lie, if the choice were "Pay for an Oracle license" or "Run MySQL", I'd pay.

10:17 PM
In theory WordPress supports everything. You will just have to replace the class wpdb but keep all internal core logic alive :)

MySQL is the Linux of databases - Fuck Standards -- Get Bugs :)

@voretaq7 With Drupal and Moodle, the core project has solid Postgres support, but some of the modules don't.

@kaiser heh, I use s9y for my blog, because everything supports Postgres.

not even heard of that

@freiheit Insert rant about modules making naked database access calls :P

10:18 PM
@kaiser Isn't there a PostgreSQL drop-in for WP? I remember hearing about one.

I don't think that there is someone out there capable of writing it but being stupid enough to support and maintain it.
your choice only is: MyIsam or InnoDB

and I wonder what happens when someone tries to do a plain MySQL query in a plugin or theme.

Flag day, as used in system administration, is a change which requires a complete restart or conversion of a sizable body of software or data. The change is large and expensive, and—in the event it doesn't work—reversing the change is similarly difficult and expensive. This usage originates from a change in the Multics operating system's definition of ASCII, which was scheduled for the U.S. holiday, Flag Day, on June 14, 1966. Another flag day was January 1, 1983, when the ARPANET changed from NCP to the TCP/IP protocol suite. References
