God have mercy, I learned something on SuperUser today. How to download a free, legal ISO of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, direct from Microsoft.
0
A: Where can I download Windows 8 legally, from Microsoft?

HopelessN00bYou can download Windows 8, and a Windows 8.1 upgrade for free, direct from from Microsoft, provided you have a valid product key. Both are on Microsoft's Windows 8 upgrade, product key only site. Complete Windows 8 ISO: Clicking the Install Windows 8 button will download an executable insta...

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Trying to be serious about being a mod :P

A: Can you get sucked tight on a planes toilet?

DocNo. Can't happen. As Stack Exchange does not allow such a short answer, here are the first few lines of Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge : In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.

hahahaha

@Jacob Badge-hunting, actually. Going for the excavator badge for editing 80 long-inactive questions, came across that question, thought it should be easy, and found it on link #3 on my first Google search. :)
Love it when shit comes together like that. Bounty, w00t.

@Jacob Ye gods - I totally misinterpreted the title of that question on the first and second read.

@MikeyB Yeah, unfortunately, I'm pretty sure they'd quickly close and delete questions about joining the mile-high blumpkin club. :(

I can star. I can star!
goes off to waste all his stars

12:33 AM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork whoah wtf #NSFW

@MikeyB NSFW? Why? There's no picture or video... or is this your subtle way of requesting an NSFW blumpkin media link?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I had a link in the middle of that that you missed. On that note, there's a lot of blumpkin images on the net.

Holy fucking shit, is he gonna regret that tat when he's 60. Have a star.

Wow, in more not-so-late-breaking news, SuperUsers are retarded.
I’m telling you now that if you give me an answer that requires first downloading an EXE, you are not getting the bounty. — Steven Penny 19 mins ago

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork :(

@Bob No offense, present company accepted, or whatever. You sure don't act like a retard, and neither does, say JourneymanGeek... but the vast majority of SuperUsers, well... not so much.

Bob
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Heh, I know, I know, but we've just about run out of cluesticks :P

Yeah, I've noticed a painful shortage since I decided to do some badge hunting over there. It's a miracle that those of you who don't need hit by the cluestick can make it through the day over there.

I'm not touching this... but @basil should!

Q: VMware ESXi - Fiber Channel Configuration

digitaladdictionsI am trying to connect a promise vTrak e610f to a VM running on ESXi 5.5u1 through a Qlogic QLE8242 HBA. I want to use RDM to connect to connect it to a Ubuntu 12.04LTS VM. After installing the QLogic driver on the ESXi server and rebooting it reported seeing the HBA but no devices or paths. ...

man, @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork is really controversial

I should try turning IPv6 on
which reminds me, you all would probably like this talk: redecentralize.org/interviews/2013/07/30/…

@ChrisS dhclient does IPv6? Just what are you using as a home router?

Q: OpenVPN Heartbleed Fix?

JonnyAs you may know, OpenVPN is vulnerable to the heartbleed attack. However, I can't find any guide online on how to fix it. @MichaelHampton The dupe is a link only answer, I think it deserves to be expanded on.

Q: Is Shelob a Maia?

PartyKingThrandeezyUngoliant is thought to be a Maia, long ago corrupted by Melkor, but is not counted among the Ainur, as Tolkien Gateway states. @Jacob Yeah, 11:20 here. I win. =P

Though, I'd be lazy and just tell cloudwatch to do it

@Jacob I would, assuming a resume was sent to me, you wanted to live in seattle, and you promised not to constantly recommend third-party solutions and spending large sums :)
we had someone apply and be like
if hired I would convert everything to windows! and apply strong GPOs for security!
(don't attempt desktop management on a network used only by hackers it won't end well)

@FalconMomot I'm not moving, decided to stay at college. I'd do remote.

so how many people here live in Seattle?

@Jacob oh, don't drop out of school to work with me. how many years to go?

@FalconMomot thank you for posting that. I'd downvoted it once long ago, but now I can go back in and give it a close vote too.

They killed that sucker.

@Wesley Not that one no... it's the second from the right on the non-water side.

@FalconMomot Where they frick are you people...

@Magellan death to it!

5:27 AM
@Wesley you've gotten much worse at telling people to go away

I don't know, I liked the guides section of the puppet docs (docs.puppetlabs.com/puppet/#puppet-guides) when I first started using it
but then again, I'm coming from CFEngine. After reading their docs it's all good.

@faker One of the coworkers here says the main problem with puppet docs is there aren't enough video guides... We have widely different learning styles, to say the least.

Compare Ansible docs with PuppetLabs docs... that's a huge gap. And I don't need videos :)

Q: PHP help - IF - ELSE statement if user is not activated

Ankh2054I am using a CMS called process wire which heavily relies on PHP syntax. I am only really now learning PHP, so it's probably a easy thing, but I am having a problem with a else statement. The part I am struggling with is below. At present I get a server error, stating an unexpected { at line 104...

So I can get some of that SO rep :D

puppet.options = "--debug" results in: HashiCorp/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.5.4/plugins/provisioners/puppet/‌provisioner/puppet.rb:21:in 'join': no implicit conversion of nil into String (TypeError) ... aha.

eww, vagrant

more like eww, puppet

neh, puppet's reasonably ok. vagrant is horrible dev junk

ah, yeah. it's the Vagrant plugin.

Vagrant completely fucked up because of ^ problem. What to do now? Downgrade (right after update)?

I hate and love Vagrant. I lost so much time trying to setup a multi-VM Vagrantfile which pins SSH ports on the specific VMs. But it also saved me so much time overall...

wasn't there some xkcd about "automate all the things!"?
Ah! Got it! You are not allowed to use a single value array for puppet.manifests_path ... because one value, how could that be an array, right.

9:17 AM
This?

lol :D

Sysadminning in a nutshell...

15 years ago I was a tourists guide, walking through the same rooms every day, repeating the same story and jokes 9 times a day. It took me 2 years to realize that I will throw myself happily into every automation trap that comes along.

@kaiser The company that's currently renting my services has a policy that conslutants shouldn't do the everyday tasks; they should be brought in for specific projects and let go once the project is over. My coworkers here spent an hour today explaining that the reason they want me to do everyday tasks is that every time they make me do that, I get bored and automate it for them...

@JennyD this is the reasons we don't have junior sysadmins or a noc. Let the smart people do the boring stuff and it will go away

9:24 AM
An ex-boss of mine once told me

@DennisKaarsemaker On the other hand, junior sysadmins become senior ones by doing the boring stuff until they figure out how to improve it. If you automate away all the basics, you'll lose at least some of the knowledge of the basics.

lol @JennyD They could just hire you for automation then? :D

> I'm the most lazy person there is. That's why I think before I do - I hate repetition.

@kaiser Laziness, impatience and hubris - cardinal virtues of a programmer... To be a sysadmin, add "paranoia"
6

Maybe that's the reason I am no sysadmin: I already hated X Files with their "trust no one".

9:26 AM
@MichelZ They originally brought me in to help with everyday stuff due to being shortstaffed... which is not as bad anymore since somehow quite a few repetitive stuff takes a lot less time now than it did a few months ago

init.se ... nice domain :)
what's your private domain? jennyup.com?

@kaiser "Trust, but verify". I don't suspect everyone of being malicious; I do suspect everyone of being stupid some percentage of the time. Including myself.
@kaiser I have a few private ones... My favourite is "bisexualmenace.org"

urgh

@JennyD NXDOMAIN
ah, only NS and MX

@DennisKaarsemaker I don't hold with this newfangled having an A-record for the domain stuff.

9:31 AM
@JennyD A is old school, the hipsters all use AAAA now :)
it's ipv6, you probably haven't heard of it :)

Also, husband has got cyberpomo.com and we still get spam to "wallace@cyberpomo.com"...
@DennisKaarsemaker dig ryo-ohki.bisexualmenace.org AAAA
All my home computers are named after starships or other sentient forms of transport

@JennyD funny that you had to edit it twice. DNS, it's more complicated than it looks :)

@DennisKaarsemaker I need more caffeine :-)

my computers are all named after military aircraft, currently typing on 'spirit'

ANd I realised I need to fix moya's DNS records so she's a bad example :-)

9:35 AM
also:
dennis@seahawk:~$ type dig
dig is aliased to `dig +noall +answer'
I like dig without the noise

I've also got the domain dybedahl.se because that's our family name and our family is the only one in Sweden with that name. And bodice.se, which I used for my sewing business back when I had time to work with it.

I have kaarsemaker.{nl,net,eu} - not the only one with the last name so I grabbed a few :)

@DennisKaarsemaker may I suggest Messerschmidt for your next one?

oh, and I have børking.com where I run booking.com through Acme::Chef

Dell really need to sort their shit out and start sparking

I got a call yesterday from one of the people we speak to there, asking if we can be a reference site for the Dell Sonicwall HA deployment we've just finished as a bunch of other UK colleges are looking to buy the same arrangement.

I got a call from someone else at Dell this morning asking if I was aware that Dell now sold some security products, such as firewalls... **facepalm**

10 head 20 desk GOTO 10

^ yes.

But honestly: Problem is that all those callcenter monkeys only have a limited set of placeholders. There's no distinction between %CLIENT% and %REFERENCE_CLIENT%.
Hello %CLIENT%,
did you know that we yesterday sold %PRODUCT% to %CLIENT%?

Oh yeah. I don't mind that they don't know we're a reference site. But you'd think they'd know that we purchased from them a few months ago!
I think they've not properly borged all their recent acquisitions and merged all their CRM records

The problem is their CRM system. It supports placeholders, but no if statements.
Could not retrieve fact fqdn
could someone explain what exactly that annoying Vagrant/puppet error means?

Deploying Ffx and Google chrome by GPO <3

deploying chrome has to have been one of the most popular things we've done with most of our students. We've not deployed FFox because we can't manage it, though its my personal preference to be honest.

@RobM There's some firefox.adm and admxml files but I haven't played with them
Took me about 10 minutes to build a ffx msi
I've no idea how I'm gonna tackle installing Office.
New insult/compliment today directed at me: "You're like the House of computing" All I need now is a Vicodin habit.

11:38 AM
Does that mean you have the limp?
There are worse people to be compared to than Hugh Laurie
I have to be honest, we deliver office as part of the base windows image here.
It just seemed easier. All our workstations have a full office pro install, so why not.

@RobM I do, incidentally.
@RobM If I had access to SCCM, that might be easier.

ah...

@ewwhite I answered. I'm missing information about how to configure multipath on esx, but that's not something I've done.

@Basil Oh, that's easy.

@ewwhite I know, but I'd be lying if I claimed I'd done it

11:52 AM
Just know that VMware ships with "Fixed Path Selection"

I was tempted to say "use alua if Promise supports it"

and that most/stupid/lazy admins never configure it for round-robin

Hey, did you want me to show you around the basics of FC? I wasn't kidding when I said how easy it is.

ALUA will show up in the number of Active I/O paths
@Basil naw, I have no FC gear

30 minutes at lunch and you'd be enough of an expert to get things done when needed
Right, but you'd have the flexibility to work on it when it cropped up

11:54 AM
most of the storage I have doesn't support block

well it's an open offer. I work through lunch because I have no friends (other than you guys)

Morning folks.

@BigHomie phew. Just making sure I'm not crazy

@ewwhite The crazy part is that some people think black people really talk like that all day. Thanks a lot Snoop

12:44 PM
@BigHomie: they don't?

@JourneymanGeek Not even close dude

@BigHomie Over the years, I wonder if Snoop's contribution has been a net-positive, net-negative or Meh.

Not even in the hood

They don't call each other homie, and slightly racist words?

@JourneymanGeek yeah, but the wikizzle fa shizzle is not rizzle, you fizzle?

12:45 PM
No, not really. but as someone of indian decent, I can do the needful
But I will beat you with a lathi if you keep saying everything is urgent ;p
@TomO'Connor: jokes aside, I wonder if you can do that with a phone

@JourneymanGeek read the barcodes? Yeah, probs.
@ewwhite It wasn't. ;)

@ewwhite I was a huge Snoop fan back in the day. Looking back on it, he was probably a studio gangsta, and net contribution is definitely negative considering all the 'new' rappers he influenced

i586? I don't even remember how to fill those with coal any more.

12:48 PM
@BigHomie and Snoop Lion... and the weeeeeed.
and the hanging out with Pimps.

@ewwhite: I'm not sure if he's banned from entering singapore or not
