@kaiser Requiring .htaccess and database edits? eh, i don't think so. :P
I just resolved to having WP wreck havoc and leave it alone...

The current (ready) options are VaryingVagrantVagrants - which is a bunch of shell scripts on top of Vagrant - or Chassis - which over configures the whole WordPress part until it forces you to fill in the undocumented bits and leftovers.

Occasionally it'll grumble about plugin updates but it's a stable beast

@NathanC lol

my next goal is to find a theme that i actually like and doesn't have the annoying sliding photos or half-screen headers with stock photos in them

The one who puts a decent WP Vagrant/Puppet or Chef stack on GitHub currently has a good chance of getting famous in the WP nanocosmos.
@NathanC have you seen my site? it's as easy as that: grab a shitty looking theme that has half decent code and live with it a decade.

8:03 PM
@kaiser Haha, I looked. I was halfway expecting to see Kubrick.

Fair enough

2014 theme is not that bad

Doesn't go full page. I really dislike the left aligned thing.
Problem is: The only thing more stupid than WordPress core is WordPress theme developers.

I hate troubleshooting tickets all day!

@MichaelHampton True. I might just use that one. I'm using "Alexandria" atm, but they locked down some useful stuff behind a paygate

8:05 PM
Did you know that Matt Mullenweg (guy who originally forked coffeelog into WordPress) stated the following official motto:
> As easy as a caveman can do it

@KevinSoviero Don't hate the ticket, hate the user.
2

And now guess who comes and starts developing on WordPress when you call for caveman.

@Tanner It's not users, it's a monitoring system...

@kaiser I'm starting to work on a Drupal Vagrant/APC/Memcache/Puppet stack...

@kaiser Cavemen?

8:06 PM
I'm a Linux admin

@MichaelHampton like the "people" who existed before Homo Sapiens Sapiens - which would be us (mostly. and in theory).

wtf I lost all my practice

MariaDB is OOMing all my shit

@kaiser Oh yeah, we're familiar with that sort of developer.

Anonymous
8:08 PM
and thus, my still-to-be-finished wordpress install at patosainz.cl is offline

Anonymous
god damn it, 512 MB is enough

@PatoSáinz You screwed something up...

Anonymous
Even fucking redis doesn't need that amount of RAM

@BigHomie Fringe like the TV show?

Anonymous
@Jacob probably

8:09 PM
@PatoSáinz Drupal does

@kaiser The one and only

Anonymous
@Jacob do you know where should I begin debugging the corpse?

@PatoSáinz Just use memcache as your DB it's soo fast and web scale

You can cram all that into 512 MB, but it's going to be a lot of work tuning everything.

there are close to no sci fi tv shows that I don't watch. Fringe is one of them.

Anonymous
8:09 PM
I can either try to cram it or just upgrade to 1 GB

@PatoSáinz Just use MySQL seriously

@PatoSáinz do you know about wordpress drop-ins?

Anonymous
@Jacob redis is an awesome db just stop denying

512MB is plenty for that

Anonymous
@Jacob i know

8:11 PM
@PatoSáinz Sounds like you need a static content CMS :)

Anonymous
but I did what my google search told me and it didn't work... also, I was notified of mysql dying because of logwatch, haven't logged into the server for 5 days

Anonymous
@ShaneMadden yes indeed

Anonymous
@kaiser like the static generators?

Anonymous
I'd use static but i'm not to be bothered paying someone or CSSing something nice myself for my photography site

@PatoSáinz yum install magic server dust

8:11 PM
@PatoSáinz no. drop ins are the 4th thing in wp: themes, plugins, mu-plugins & drop ins.
@PatoSáinz db-error.php in your ~/wp-content dir (or how ever you named it) and then just dump everything from there.

RAM's cheap. Get over it and buy more. :D

Guys, I know licensing questions are off-topic here, but I'm in a tight spot so I was hoping someone might know: If I was to install Windows Server 2012 from an Action-Pack ISO, can that be activated with a Volume License (SPLA) MAK later on? Thanks, and sorry. :)

@PatoSáinz it kicks in when the db connection gets lost. you can do everything (even just plain PHP without any WP connection) in there.

@Geekman Ask your licensing provider, that's all we can say...

Anonymous
@kaiser and what could I do with a drop-in?

Anonymous
8:13 PM
other than redirecting people to somewhere functional

@Geekman Off-topic on site and in chat :D But yes, all keys work with Windows 2012, there are no special-volume-builds-and-shit AFAIK.

@Jacob I expected that. But unfortunately I don't have a licensing provider for SPLA yet. Was just hoping someone here may have done that before. Anyways, thanks.

I have a WP multisite and an asterisk server crammed into an EC2 micro instance. It can be done.

@PatoSáinz log into some specific file. that way you should be able to tell how far wp loaded or if it loaded at all. logs in there would just be from the point where drop ins get loaded. might be a possibility to determine if it's really that server task running or if it's just wp loosing connection.

@MichaelHampton Umm why?

8:14 PM
@Jacob Why what?

@MichaelHampton asterisk

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton how much time did you waste on it?

Guh, the fire alarm panel has been beeping for over 2 hours now

@Jacob Because asterisk is really good at handling phone calls?

make it stoppppp

8:14 PM
@Geekman Also, that's not how MS licensing works. You can use every key no matter where it's from, as long as you have it licensed...

D:

Anonymous
@kaiser oh. I know for a fact the DB's dead.

@PatoSáinz Oh, I dunno

@MichaelHampton You use that as your phone server?

@PatoSáinz flat dead?

8:15 PM
@Jacob Surprised it's a micro instance? It actually works very well. Though it's also not taking calls constantly.

@MichaelHampton The micro instances work quite well for their price

@MichaelHampton Are you using that to forward your 1800 to your cell or something? I would have figured that the CPU would have prevented that from being effective.

@MichelZ Thanks! I thought that would be the case, MAPS is a MAK as well, so it seemed fair to assume it would be fine. Just wanted to check.

I managed to get a small minecraft server functioning on it...

@Jacob Among other things. It's doing a variety of stuff. Including providing call-in lines for a talk radio show.

8:19 PM
@MichaelHampton That is really surprising.

@Jacob I hear about it instantly if there are any audio problems. Which hasn't happened in many moons.

Q: What is the Ubuntu "tang" process

BMeissMy Ubuntu 12.04 server is becoming periodically non-responsive. Upon recovery (while I'm running top) I see a bunch of processes named "tang". They aren't using a ton of resources (around 3% cpu), but I have no idea what they are or what they are doing. My Google-fu is failing me on this one. ...

@PatoSáinz do you have plugins or a theme other than the shipped one running?

Anonymous
8:21 PM
fuck. you.

@PatoSáinz Dude, what are you even doing to cause that?

I don't take that as an answer to my question :)

Anonymous
@kaiser I do have one theme

8 more minutes

8:22 PM
@Jacob Oh, are you talking about the whole CPU throttling thing on micro instances? Hasn't been an issue.

@PatoSáinz let's start from scratch

@MichaelHampton neat

@PatoSáinz Q/A
Q: Is it a single site instance?

@Jacob Of course I also have it closely monitored (and I don't mean with Amazon's crap).

Anonymous
@kaiser yes. set up one week ago.

8:22 PM
@MichaelHampton Zabbix?

Anonymous
@kaiser oh and some plugins

@Jacob Yup

@PatoSáinz Stop being cheap, buy more RAM.

@PatoSáinz Q: Which theme do you have running? And what plugins? Links please.

@BigHomie i'm cheap

@PatoSáinz Stop being cheap, buy more RAM.

@PatoSáinz You're doing it wrong, I can get a WP instance running on 128/256

Anonymous
@Jacob probably

@PatoSáinz Just add my publickey and I'll fix it for you.

8:24 PM
@PatoSáinz Running mysql/mariadb on 512 is like running dehydrated
You won't get very far before crashing.

@BigHomie nahhh

Anonymous
@BigHomie i'm doing little data... hell it's just an almost default installation

@PatoSáinz doesn't matter

Anonymous
@Jacob let me try fixing it myself first, thanks for your help

@BigHomie Just need to turn down the cache to nothing

Anonymous
8:25 PM
@kaiser here it is:

without translation and with the standard theme and w/o plugins you can run it with as low as 32Mb Ram.

@PatoSáinz lol It was a joke I was going to steal all of your data and run rm -rf /
(not really)

Anonymous
@Jacob >implying i don't have backups

Anonymous
>implying i store data

@PatoSáinz It's one way to test your backups

Anonymous
8:26 PM
@kaiser let me format it friendlier:

:15144028 couldn't you just click "visit the plugin site" and show me the links? :P
@PatoSáinz yes. please.

nice

@ShaneMadden Now you're running it on 512 with no cache
You're dehydrated and sweating

Hm. Ok, I can't say much about the theme as it's behind a paywall.

@PatoSáinz YOU'RE A DJ!

@BigHomie Yup. This is why I recommended a static content CMS instead - no PHP or database to suck down RAM.

@ShaneMadden Yeah, I get that, nice template btw @PatoSáinz

Anonymous
@BigHomie nope

Anonymous
8:31 PM
@BigHomie got to tweak it tho, it has some shit that bothers me. thanks anyway :)

Google Analytics shouldn't do much harm. But I dunno what goes round with Cloudflare and Wordfence...

@PatoSáinz that's you alright, he looks 14
> The logs were clean, so I'm assuming this was a result of not patching the heartbleed bug fast enough on the server. Attack happened April 17th.
HEARTBLEED DID IT

Anonymous
@BigHomie a friend, he is the one who gets most gigs... and I leech money from the hosts by getting the DJ to offer my services

@kaiser why?

@PatoSáinz clone Debug Objects into your stack and take a look at the amount of queries. Then grab Cachify and try it with HD cache for the public site.
@PatoSáinz amount of queries.

WordPress base DB class is $wpdb, which (a) is a fork (b) is a monster and (c) doesn't really behave nicely with JOINs. For e.g. it adds two JOINs for one meta table query. And then it grows upon that.
@PatoSáinz maybe if I actually would be a sysadmin :D

@kaiser lol

BUT I AM NOT! I AM HERE BY ACCIDENT!
:D

8:34 PM
damn, server's at 463MB of the 491MB available

Check the amount of queries. I have seen single themes and plugins doing 100+ queries for a single request.

@PatoSáinz I smell a ddos

Anonymous
@BigHomie i'm not blonde nor a DJ, tough luck :)

@BigHomie do you think so?

@PatoSáinz Your php-fpm pool is too large. Cut it down to size.

8:35 PM
@PatoSáinz it wouldn't take but about 5 legitimate viewers....

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton what parameter should I change, in which file?

@PatoSáinz All of them :)

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton alright i'll just google then :p

Anonymous
@kaiser i'm on it

@PatoSáinz /etc/php-fpm.d/www.conf is the default

Anonymous
8:37 PM
@MichaelHampton yea I think I remember that... I'm on Fedora btw

@PatoSáinz With 512MB I'd cut it to the absolute minimum
pm.max_children = 5
pm.start_servers = 2
pm.min_spare_servers = 2
pm.max_spare_servers = 3

Anonymous
@BigHomie well, still, I know how to beatmatch and have replaced the DJ in some emergencies. Also I'm the one who taught the DJ how to use his sound gear (he may be good with a controller but he sucks at sound reinforcement and such)

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton alright

For MariaDB I'd let it run for a couple of days and then run mysqltuner.pl

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton oh, I ran mysqltuner but after 5 minutes of mysqld uptime

8:41 PM
@kaiser I installed and activated debug-objects... what do?

@PatoSáinz If your site starts getting busy, bump up max_children by one until RAM gets tight again. Then upgrade your VPS.

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton for how many people would this work? Could it handle google and an human at the same time?

@PatoSáinz If you serve a dynamic page in half a second, you can have 10 simultaneous hits to that page.
But it's going to vary a lot :) Keep a close eye on it, install monitoring for php-fpm

Anonymous
@MichaelHampton monitoring with what?

Anonymous

Anonymous
8:47 PM
because nagios is overkill

@PatoSáinz I use zabbix to monitor everything, and have a nice php-fpm status setup for it
