12:01 AM
@ScottPack Con Air also. Event Horizon.

@MarkHenderson That's a Cage movie I haven't seen.
@MarkHenderson Event Horizon is great.

@MarkHenderson Broken Arrow
@ScottPack So's your face.
Wait... that... that was how you do it, right?

@Wesley See now Travolta made good movies both before and after that period. He just... nosedived for a few years

@Wesley Yes. That's exactly how you do it.

@ScottPack The movie just didn't make sense
Why were there so many spikes in that black hole room?

12:03 AM
@MarkHenderson Precisely. Grease and Michael are examples of the good ones.

They served no purpose except to impale people
@ScottPack Pulp Fiction
But as a 15 year old kid, seeing someone's insides strung up on meathooks? Best thing EVAR

augh, I made a stupid
@MarkHenderson I would not be interested in that

@MarkHenderson It opened a gateway to another dimension that pretty much corresponds to the Christian Hell. It doesn't have to make sense because the premise causes the ship to no longer follow the laws of physics of our universe.

although I am not the typical male that you seem to be aiming that comment towards

I'm not a fan of gore either.

12:05 AM
@ScottPack But... spikes. In a dome shaped room. Doesn't make sense.

Oo. What's the Hennifer Ropez movie that had her in a red body suit and had a NIN soundtrack?

Also why was the ship fallic shaped? That wasn't nessesary either. No need for that huge fucking corridor
@ScottPack Horrible?
Only movie I saw of hers was 10+ years ago where she was a maid
And she didn't have sex with anyone on-camera

Penis ships are the best ships.
The Cell
The Cell is a 2000 science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Tarsem Singh, and starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn and Vincent D'Onofrio. Plot Child psychologist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) is an expert in an experimental treatment for coma patients: a virtual reality device that allows her to enter into the minds of her patients and attempt to coax them into consciousness. When serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) falls into a coma before the FBI can locate his final victim, Agent Novak (Vince Vaughn) persuades Deane to enter Stargher's mind and ...

@ScottPack But... is it on NetFlix?
JLo and Vince Vaughn, oh my

12:08 AM
@MarkHenderson I don't remember him being in a movie with strung up guts

@Wesley He wasn't in Event Horizon

And Vincent D'Onofrio because it needs some creeper to balance out Hennifer Ropez's booty.

Sam Neil and Lawrence Fishburn were the two big-names in that movie

ah

wipes brow whew, no more downtime

12:09 AM
I was going to try to make it through Human Centipide or the Saw movies sometime, but I'm just not really into gore for the sake of Gore.

@strugee Bah downtime. Just tell your users to put up or shut up
@Wesley Saw 1 was pretty good. I havent seen the rest.

I did watch "You're Next" which was a fun little bloody romp.

Human Centipede is apparently just bad. Not even in a good way.

@MarkHenderson I have no users

You're Next is on Amazon Prime as of a few weeks ago, BTW.

12:09 AM
but my mistake was unbelievably stupid

Bonus: Someone dies from a blender to the head.

and I feel bad about downtime anyway

@Wesley So I could google it, but its easier to ask: What's amazon prime?
@strugee You installed Gentoo by mistake?
2
@Wesley Always fun!

@MarkHenderson Pay $100 a year or so and get free two day shipping on all orders, and also have access to their streaming stuff.

@MarkHenderson hahahaha

12:10 AM
@strugee You typed drop database; in the wrong console tab?

@MarkHenderson emerge nixos

@Wesley You say that, but what are your USE flags for nixos?

no, I have a hobbyist server at home, on a home internet connection. which means that I get new IPs from my ISP

@ScottPack I pulled the wrong power cord out last time I was in my rack.

@Wesley But it was OK because everything had dual PSUs... right?

12:11 AM
@Wesley Oh yeah, those two power supplies on are on different circuits. No problem.

my IP changed last night so I went into my DNS provider to change it but instead of changing what I meant to, I changed the record to my main site (which is on GitHub Pages)
so it started timing out because I haven't finished configuring Apache yet

About two a year I get IPMI alerts about a single PSU going offline, and it's inherantly someone pulling out the wrong fucking power cord
(someone else manages our hardware for the moment)

Back, sorry.
Was balls deep in pfSense.
@MarkHenderson Uhmmm... no?
@ScottPack Uhmmm... no?

Don't host a site from your house bad idea... Need a VPS?

@strugee So you're hosting a production site behind dynamic DNS at your home. Nice.
@strugee I don't do SMTP redirection for you, do I? What's your domain?
Strugee.net? Okay, nope.

12:15 AM
@Wesley yeah, I know. I keep it classy
@Wesley yep
why would you be doing SMTP redirection for me?

@strugee Hey, I know a guy in town that started a MSP out of high school. He had a full rack running in his apartment's master bedrrom with big circular fans running on it. During a power outage he had to go to Home Depot and get a gas generator. =P

no but actually I don't have any users yet

@strugee Dynamic IP address implies you're hosting business stuff on a dynamic / home address and I run an SMTP inbound redirection service that people use to run mail servers at home.

@Wesley hah!
also, what's an MSP? when I Googled the only thing that came up was Microsoft Project Server

@strugee Managed Service Provider.
Managed services are the practice of outsourcing day-to-day management responsibilities and functions as a strategic method for improving operations and cutting expenses. This can include outsourcing HR-activities, production support and lifecycle build/maintenance activities. The person or organization that owns or has direct oversight of the organization or system being managed is referred to as the offeror, client, or customer. The person or organization that accepts and provides the managed service is regarded as the service provider or MSP. Typically, the offeror remains accountable ...

12:17 AM
I've considered getting a UPS for mine but they're really expensive and there would be no point because even if the server stayed up, the router would have no power
@Wesley gotcha

@Wesley I have a client like that. They are on the 43'rd floor of a residential building. He has fiber trunks into his penthouse apartment, a 5kw PSU with extended runtime batteries and a diesel generator on his balcony for extended outages

@strugee Put the router on it? Often times even if power goes out in the neighborhood DSL still works because it has phantom power from the regional node

@strugee Um. You plug the router into the UPS?

@MarkHenderson Frick-a-doodle-doo
@strugee Okay so no paying customers yet? How do you propose to get paying clients?

@Wesley Kidnap their firstborn children until they sign a 36-month contract

12:19 AM
@Wesley @MarkHenderson oh that's interesting, I didn't know that. I just figured there would be no point, because there's no way you could put everything on the UPS

Of course you can put everything on it
Thats why we have them
You get a PDU or two, plug them into the UPS and plug everything into the PDU

@Wesley I don't. I'm not interested in making money, I'm interested in making mass surveillance unprofitable
@MarkHenderson I meant things outside

You put your switches on there, and if have a PoE infrastructure then basically eveyrthing stays online

@strugee Oh, right, you're 15. Wait until your spirit gets broken. You'll be working in a cubicle before you know it.

When we have a power outage here in the office, the computres go down (as they're not on the UPS) but the phones, wifi, servers, etc, all stay online

12:21 AM
@MarkHenderson POE FTW

@Wesley fail

@Wesley yep, so not exactly a huge income for a UPS. I'd rather get a large backup drive.
@Wesley there's no way I'm ever gonna let that be me
I'd gouge my eyes out

@strugee Uh huh. Okay.
=P

haha
that's the plan, anyway
if I'm lucky I'll get a job at some company like Red Hat or Mozilla. prays

@strugee Figure something out. Make some skrill. Boxbilling and Stripe - get some services out there.
@strugee They're just better at hiding how evil they are than Microsoft and Apple.

12:25 AM
@Wesley shrugs
whatever you may say about Red Hat's problems, they do a lot of good stuff. better than Canonical.
@Wesley I have no idea what you just said

Make your own way. Contribute your own code to FOSS projects and hire yourself out as a consultant to make ends meet.
LIVE THE DREAM!

@Wesley yeah, that's the plan
I have this pet plan that by the time I'm out of college I'll be a core GNOME contributor or something and Red Hat will just hire me on the spot because I'm already known in the community

Whoo! I get to post on Odesk! Much joy!

it will never work out that way, obviously.

@strugee Boxbilling is a FOSS payment system that you can use to bill people on a plan. Stripe is an awesome payment gateway / acquiring bank / etc. Skrill is money on yo' pocket playah.
@strugee You can do it if you do it to it.

12:28 AM
Why the hell do I always need to tell scp clients to actually use scp? Why do scp clients always try to use sftp and never scp? Why are they called scp if they don't use scp unless you explicitly flag it?

So in other words, stop hanging out with burnt-out losers like us, open a code window and start twiddling your gits.

@strugee You won't have time to be a core GNOME contribute. Just ask @MarkHenderson

@MarkHenderson #gnu?

@MarkHenderson Which slimeball clients are you using?

@Wesley pscp
Also scp on Linux is the same

12:28 AM
@Wesley gotcha

@Wesley Speak for your self on the burnout part

@MarkHenderson I dungeddit. When I use scp it uses scp by default.

@Wesley also, I'm just going to assume that "gits" was a pun, yes?

@strugee -.-

Q: Why does scp -scp work but not scp without that flag

Stuwhen I try and scp to my solaris box, I get this unable to initialise SFTP: could not connect unless I do scp -scp then it works. In my sshd_config file, I have this: Subsystem sftp /usr/local/libexec/sftp-server

12:30 AM
@Wesley O.O

@MarkHenderson That's so weird. I've never experienced that.

Q: is there a better PROCESS for picking office printers?

Aaron Bricki run a small mac/linux/android network and finding options for our new printer has been difficult. we have a few criteria, and as you all know, the market is pretty convoluted, with long feature lists and rapid model turnover. looking for intersections between the lists of models that "work per...

I fricking hate printers.

@EEAA Printers are the bane of existence. Fact #1 of the universe.

@strugee Most awkward stomp in movie history.

12:33 AM
@Wesley I take it you've never watched WWF/WWE or whatever it's called?

@Wesley indeed

@jscott I used to like it when it was called WWF and I was a barely-sentient excuse for a hominid, also known as "a 13 year old"
@jscott I was a big fan of Undertaker and Lex Luther.
Lex Luther's story is so sad. =(
Lawrence Wendell "Larry" Pfohl (born June 2, 1958), better known by his ring name, Lex Luger, is an American former professional wrestler, television producer and American football player currently working with WWE on their wellness policy. He is best known for his work with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Luger is a three-time world champion, having held the WCW World Heavyweight Championship twice and the WWA World Heavyweight Championship once; and a record-tying five-time NWA/WCW United States Heavyw...
Spinal stroke.

@Wesley I approve this message

@Wesley I don't know that I was ever a Real Fan, at least not like The Others. I know I was gifted The Wrestling Album and listened to it a number of times. After that, I think video games pretty much took over.
Sorry about that was reading your link whilst composing and accidentally a whole word or two.

@Wesley Maybe your devices have SFTP. This is a Cisco router so raw SCP is the only way to go

12:40 AM
@MarkHenderson Nah, never set up SFTP on anything I have.
So I'm talking mostly server-to-server or workstation-to-server scp sessions.
Rarely workstation-to-appliance
Also, I wonder if pfSense's packet capture is in memory or to disk.
Because I'm going to totally smash memory if this DNS capture overnight is put into RAM.

@Wesley My guess is that it flushes to disk

@MarkHenderson I certainly hope so.

Why are you running a DNS cap for so long?

@Wesley have fun

Apparently it does write to disk. doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Sniffers,_Packet_Capture
@MarkHenderson Okay so, there is one specific hostname that the vendor is saying is saying isn't resolving right. It's a long story, but since the appliance is locked down, I can't manually trigger the operation that causes this specific hostname to be locked up. I have to wait for the auto-update feature to be triggered based on time.
Auto-update looks for the hostname, bingo I get the packets.

12:44 AM
@Wesley Is this embedded pfsense?

Sooo... I'm not really interested in touching my computer after dinner because I'm getting cranky in my old age and want to do things like... oh... go outside, run, and read. =P
So I'm just going to start the pcap and then walk away until tomorrow morning.

Q: Permission umask 000

amandanovaesI have a folder with lots of directories and I want all directories to have 777 permission. So I typed: cd /ebs1/vol/ umask 000 The problem is that when I connect using SFTP to the folder /ebs1/vol/test/folder1 and I create a folder it has always permission 644 and 644 to files too. How do I ...

I just died

@Wesley <radical free software zealot>that's why you don't get locked-down stuff that you can't fix yourself</radical free software zealot>

Only problem is that I do about 4,000 to 10,000 DNS lookups an hour on this appliance.
@EEAA No, pfsense on a Dell server. Top of rack firewall for my rack.

@Wesley OK, good. If it were embedded, the cap would go to the ramdisk.

12:46 AM
@Wesley I strongly suggest you not do the cap. It's going to murder performance

@strugee I could have hand built a stack to my liking, but then I also like to go outside, have relationships with people, and change into clean clothes.

@Jacob They're on a roll with questions today.

@Jacob Five crap questions in under a day. Is that a new record?

@Wesley Luckily @strugee and I do none of those things. Well I shower and wear clean clothes so I guess I'm a conformist too :(

@EEAA No. The record is 61 minutes.

12:47 AM
@Jacob A cap just on :53? Shouldn't be so bad
I accidentally left a pcap running for 5 days once and nobody complained

@MarkHenderson I've noticed some issues.
Granted that was on some high throughput stuff

@MarkHenderson I once started a ping logging shell script in a problematic network and promptly forgot about it for a year or so. Filled up the disk. :)

Whelp, time to go start P90X; someone call an ambulance for me?

Yeah it's good.
=P

@Jacob Just googled it. If it makes you look like this, then I will sign up now
Of course she was hot before she started so that helps

12:50 AM
@MarkHenderson I'll let you know. I have a lot more fat than that.

@Jacob Good on you! Keep at it.

@Jacob yeah, I wish I had no time to hand-build a FLOSS stack because I was in a relationship
I do take showers and change clothes, though
although sometimes when my dad makes me brush my hair in the morning, and I'm feeling really anticonformist, I'll muss it up right after I get out of the car at school

@MarkHenderson Yeah that's what I don't get. Person is already hot, they can only get so much better. It's like the half incrementation challenge.

@strugee Fucking rebel man
Watch out for this kid

@strugee I drive myself places. Wait until you can do that :)

12:52 AM
@Jacob fuck off

Can't you get a driver's permit at 15 still?

@strugee Oh and trust me you'll stop eventually. At some point biology will kick in and you'll realize that you actually want girls to like you...

@MarkHenderson I know, right? the political tshirts help too

@jscott Yeah.

@Jacob shrugs noncommittally

12:54 AM
@jscott I got 110 days or better to get results. My dad and I did pretty well last summer/spring, but then I went to college and just stopped.
During orientation I'm going to look at bike friendliness to see if I can prevent that from happening.
@strugee dude, either girls or boys.... The rate of asexual humans is nearly nonexistent.

@Jacob not what I was talking about at all. I am most definitely straight

@strugee That wasn't was I was suggesting, and frankly IDGAF eitherway.

@Jacob I enjoy hearing when people are motivated to do self improvement stuff. Seriously, keep at, even if do you get a bike... 'cause you know @Wesley won't. ;)

@Jacob alright, I don't get it, but whatever

@jscott Yeah well how else am I going to be able to confirm @MarkHenderson s expectation of American college life?
Besides, being fit would appear to be awesome.
