1:03 PM
morning

sup

I went for a 7KM walk last night in the freezing wind, and this morning, I feel like a million dollars.

@Basil <waits for flu to set in>

@BigHomie I'm always fighting off something- both my kids are in daycare, and they pick up everything
most recently, hand foot and mouth disease.

@Basil you said it! I've never been sick so often with things so potent since I had kids (2nd one just started daycare, 1st has been infecting me ever since she started)

1:11 PM
@ewwhite Headless is what most people do hence the weak graphics chip in most servers

1:30 PM
Man, I never knew Superuser was so ripe for the easy rep plucking.
However @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork - this question is a perfect one for you to comment on how you'll thwart this kind of user on SU:
0
Q: How do you add the something in http://www.something.webname.com

MaximilianHow can I add this extra part and what does it mean? www.SOMETHING.domain.co.uk

It is pretty clear what I am asking... Everybody seems to understand. @slhck — Maximilian 19 mins ago
Wow...
I have my answer though. So it must have been a good enough question? — Maximilian 8 mins ago
That deserves a mass influx of Comms Room folks downvoting it to death...

@TheCleaner Thwart, nothing. Moron, meet modhammer. Bye!
@TheCleaner Question ban the jackass, w00t.

That's what I'm talking about!

@TheCleaner Oh dude, I got 1k in a couple of months, no joke
For sysadmins it's a cakewalk, that's why I hardly frequent anymore

OH, sweet mother of God.
-1
Q: CMD - System and computer architecture command(s)

SpiderporkWhat's the main command(s) for windows cmd to know everything (if it's possible) about the operating system installed and the computer architecture, such as CPU architecture or about the memory... ? Is wmic an helpful command? Thank you in advance.

1:40 PM
@ewwhite snotr.com/video/7859/… -- yes magic is real, we've known about it for some time now

@TheCleaner I just +1'd it. That site is for n00bs, and he's asking a n00b question

@BigHomie The answer deserves a +1, but not the question. He doesn't even know what the fuck he's trying to do. Different story if he'd asked what is the "something," but asking "how do I add this something" without even knowing what the something is... well, that's bad, even for n00bs.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I thought he did say what is the something? No?
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork oh, in that case, -1.

@BigHomie It's right up there... "How can I add this extra part and what does it mean?"

@BigHomie -2 !

1:44 PM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork there has to be a question about what a subdomain is on that site anyway
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Yeah, I read it backwards, must be my a.d.d. kicking in

@BigHomie Might not be. It's pretty cesspool-y, and the current mod team doesn't seem all that interested/motivated to fix things.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork All the more reason you got a room full of comm'ies backin' you

@TheCleaner ... click on your web browser address bar, click on the period after the www, type the extra characters ...
wow.
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I've seen worse.
Motherfucking Juniper.

@BigHomie Enh, honestly, ... well, it just strikes me as all the more reason not to give a fuck. If their mods don't care about making the site better, why should I? Why should anyone else?

Where the hell is the goddam VPN client?

1:48 PM
Seems like that's weel into "lost cause" territory.
@MikeyB I think, at least for me, that's as bad as you can get before drifting into hilari-sad territory.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Because it's a microcosm of the American Gov't
Scrap 'em all and start over is commonly proposed as answer there

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork do you think SuperUser is ready for an actual Genius Of Networks?

@BigHomie Seems like you're making my point, only hanging all the SuperUser folks for treason seems unduly harsh and uncalled for.

actually, looking at the nomination list again, my second choice appears to not be there any more :-(

@RobM @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork isn't the spiteful abusive mod that SuperUser wants, he's the spiteful abusive mod that SuperUser deserves and needs.

1:52 PM
@RobM Absolutely not. They'd have a massive outbreak of the minimal understanding problem. "What's a dll??!?!??!1 I'm not trying to download anything, I want to know why my cimputer is borken!!!!!"

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I'm sure we're all traitors if you dig hard enough

Oh I agree @Wesley - but much like the truth, the question isn't 'do they want him' but 'can they handle him'.
also, the question is "What are you, some kind of communist?"

@RobM Journeyman isn't any pushover either. I'd like to see the two of them as SU mods. Thing'd get done, that's for sure.

Well they're my two top nominations now that he that shall not be named is no longer there.
because i'd quite like to see he who shall not be named get named as a moderator somewhere because it would be amusing.

So, we have a robotics customer. They want us to take over their infrastructure. OK.
Asked us for recommendations on switches.
OK, HP switches like @ewwhite deploys. Nothing super fancy but they're manageable and can help protect their LAN when the FREQUENT events such as someone accidentally plugs in a rogue DHCP server because they're testing some robotics.
No, they say, too expensive, we'll just buy these cheap Netgear switches.
*grits teeth*
Ask us to quote them a router/firewall for their new location.

1:54 PM
And more invalid flags!

wtf was that flag about? This is why we need @HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork to have site wide chat mod privs

@MikeyB Nice.

@BigHomie I'd rather be a traitor than a patriot, TBH. I might sing a different tune at my eventual trial, but still... better a traitor than a patriot.

@RobM Okay, to be fair, I'm in chat more and have an even more abusive temper for chat flags. I'll snap up Sitewide Chatmod of Bitterness and Anger if that position becomes available.

1:56 PM
@MikeyB So when things go sneakers up, it's time for some sweet, sweet hourly billing right?

@Wesley And guess what? Doesn't support openVPN, need to replace the VPN clients on everyone's laptops. Doesn't do DNS, need to install internal dns/dhcp. Doesn't support LDAP auth, need to set up radius.

@RobM I don't even look anymore. I just knee-jerk counterflag every flag I see. That global chat flag thing is hopelessly broken.

@MikeyB HULK SMASH!!!

Still working that out. Technically he sold it as our partner company, a Windows shop and they have no Windows servers.
We're now taking them over from our partner company.
Part of the problem is he sells these all the time to Windows shops - the deal is $1800/month flat rate PLUS ONSITE TIME.
Guess what? Anything the Windows guys do, they come onsite to do.
Whereas we do EVERYTHING remotely.

The Freebeer and Hotwings radio show is based in Grand Rapids, MI (where I live), and I listen to them most mornings. The pull pranks on people on a regular basis - this morning's was awesome (note "Airhorn" in the title): freebeerandhotwings.com/b/…

1:57 PM
"Oh, you're having networking trouble? Aww... guess that's an onsite visit."

@MikeyB Okay so just start showing up physically there even if you can do things remotely?
@MikeyB Ohhh, nice. Right.

@MikeyB Why do the Windows guys go on site for everything? I'm a Windows guy, and I loathe that. If I can't manage it remotely, it can be someone else's problem.

@Wesley Considering that's the Windows' guys ENTIRE FREAKIN' REVENUE MODEL guess we're going to have to.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork You mean like Mark Wahlberg?

2:00 PM
@Wesley I would have fired them as a customer already.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Cuz Windows remoting is severely broken and no one implements Intel vPro
@DennisKaarsemaker You forgot Genius of Network

Which is a goddam shame really, they're a Linux shop, we are absolutely perfect for them. I know a few people there as well. (and a few people know me, in the "Oh! YOU'RE Supermathie!" sense)

Don't forget the Genius

@BigHomie neh, that's his new name. I liked his old name better, before he got all popular.

@MikeyB terrible

2:02 PM
32 support tickets

@BigHomie No, like seriously. Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious. Patriotism is the measles of humanity; it is an infantile disease. Patriotism is the arbitrary veneration of real estate over principles. (Etc.)

send help*

@ewwhite add to that, a cobbled-together infrastructure built on toothpicks that we took over with no takeover/fixup/whatever you call it budget.

you should break off on your own... @MikeyB

welp, there goes another Dell R420 offline

2:04 PM
@BigHomie How do you figure? OoB me, WinRM/Powershell me, even RDP/RA me. For that matter, even Webex/GoToAssist/other web based screenshare. If you don't have at least one of those things, GTFO until you get a real computer set up (or pay me to set it up for you).

@ewwhite I am contemplating doing just that.

@MikeyB I don't mind some of the bullshit I see because I pocket $200/hr. doing it

@BigHomie Actually, I just changed it on my profile here, so adding it would only serve to confuse the Super User users, who, let's face it, are confused enough in general, without us adding to their problems.

@ewwhite whore conslutant :P

@MikeyB Is that maybe by design? Billing many, many hours at $200/hour, indefinitely, rather than a one-time pay off to fix it?

2:07 PM
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork capex vs. opex...

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork Yeah but when Windows breaks that stuff has a nasty habit of breaking too in oddball ways, which is where vPro comes in handy

@BigHomie True that, it is far more convenient, and would be awesome to have on all the client PCs I otherwise have to occasionally touch physically, but it's generally not that necessary, with how quick and easy reimaging has become.

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork What? You can just reimage a machine when it misbehaves? Do they serve lobster and caviar for lunch also?

There are a few client PCs here that should be touched by the business end of a cricket bat.

@BigHomie Only when I pay for it out of my own pocket.

2:14 PM
@MikeyB Oh wow are they that bad? Like, not even the money can make it worthwhile?

@DennisKaarsemaker You rang?

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm okay with that.
Plus, I'm a terrible employee.

Dan
@ewwhite *person

Naw, I'm a decently-okay person.

@ewwhite I've tried telling myself that before - after I spend the money (or my wife get's it), it's gone - the scars last a lifetime.

2:18 PM
@JennyD you're not the only conslutant in here :)

@DennisKaarsemaker But I'm the only one who's been accused of faking emails about approving of the term!

@Dan Wrong. It's horses that are terrible people.

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm a conslutant! How may I help you today?

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork They are; they are very good horses, though.

@Wesley by cleaning your litterbox, filthy conslutcat!

2:20 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I've been sick. =(
sniffle

@Wesley In the litterbox?

pukes on @DennisKaarsemaker

@Wesley It's really not that bad but it's a business that's grown a lot over the past few years and now the internal techs (who set up the systems) rightly don't want to be handling it anymore.

@JennyD It has marvelous absorbing qualities.

2:20 PM
kicks @Wesley in the gonads

@DennisKaarsemaker Meta.
@MikeyB So they're not primarily IT people, but engineers that were tasked with setting the network up, and then it grew out of their abilities or desires to keep up with it?

@Wesley Exactly that.

Okay, so I'm about to go into battle with my belligerent vendor... once I finish my tea and eat my breakfast bar.

I used to be a consultant... Now I just work an 8-5 job like everyone else... Oh, how I do so miss the days of creativity and freedom!

2:22 PM
This vendor is going to push me to the edge of actually swearing at someone over the phone.
@KevinSoviero Now you have to put up with market wages and being able to feed yourself. OH THE HORRORS!

@Wesley Are they vendoring their own software?

The answer seemed really weird. The OP is asking for a solution, and the answer was not to use ReiserFS? Having experiencing ext2, ext3, ReiserFS (10+years), and lately ext4 - none has the speed and robustness of Reiserfs. Till today, ext4 still has the problem of not being able to free up space even though I had deleted lots of files. Overall Reiserfs is still among the best. — Peter Teoh 2 mins ago

@MikeyB Yeah, it's a mail appliance from MailFoundry.

ReiserFS?!?

@ewwhite Member for 3 years and his first comment ever is to bust your balls over ReiserFS. You have some of the worst luck man. =P

2:26 PM
sure it sounds good now but the support will kill you

@ewwhite "ext4 still has the problem of not being able to free up space even though I had deleted lots of files" OK yeah, any credibility you may have had is gone.

@MikeyB Bro do you even journal?

@PeterTeoh ReiserFS is only the best answer if the questions is "how can I use Linux to kill my wife?" — HopelessN00b Genius of network 16 secs ago

+1 for a mugshot. — BigHomie 10 secs ago
@RobM I CWYDT

:)

2:30 PM
@ewwhite I smallerized that mugshot for you

>! I wonder if this works in chat
Guess not
@MikeyB Yeah that thing was 25 to life sized

@MikeyB Don't just snipe at the guy in chat, leave a comment and help him out! "Sorry to hear about your space problem, have you tried rm -rf / --no preserve root ??"

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork <looks for @mossy to chime in> ....

Bob
@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork I just learned --no by itself works (without the other two words).
Uhh... I didn't need that system anyway.
heck, --n is enough o.O
That's... not particularly safe.

that does seem a little counter-productive, yes.

2:39 PM
@Bob that sounds splendid, it's not as if anybody could maybe get it mixed up with --noop...

Okay, breakfast over. Time to put my Smashing Gloves of SysAdmin Bitterness on and beat on the keyboard to reply to $stupidVendor.

yes HP, I will repeat the diagnostic info I've already done and sent you, and not at all just send you the same stuff again.

So what do other sysadmins do for fun around here

@HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork WHY
wow nice name.
was it always HopelessN00bGeniusofnetwork

@mossy No, happened a couple days ago.
> Dear HopelessN00b Genius of network... it's easy for you to speak. If I could explain my problems in my language probably also an hysteric like you could help me, but in another Language (english) is no easy for me. Anyway thanks, I'll continue to try online. Ps. I make this job from 1998 when you were probably coming out of college. So before to speak... think!
(Guy deleted his post since then, so linky only works for 10k+ users.

2:49 PM
Who here knows the most about pfSense?
@MikeyB Aren't you a pfSense believer?
I've got a good little story.

@BigHomie jerking off.

@Wesley meeeeeeee

or hold on, that is part of the job.

@Bob old rm version maybe?

@BigHomie What's this "fun" you speak about?

2:51 PM
So vendor's appliance suddenly starts crapping itself because one application in their stack is mysteriously fiddling with IPv6 addresses and it doesn't know how to work with them. Their answer "Well, your firewall must be doing something with IPv6 tunneling and forcing our DNS queries to return on IPv6 or something."

I'm running pfSense 2.0.3 until I can get to the DC physically and oversee the update.

Anyone know why this is funny?
pfSense doesn't even have IPv6 support until 2.1

@Wesley Because that version doesn't have IPv6 support in the GUI/at all
@Wesley What type of appliance?

> By default, in pfSense 1.2.3 and newer, all IPv6 is dropped by default since overly permissive rulesets can otherwise allow IPv6 traffic and that is likely undesirable in most cases. This behavior can be disabled under System -> Advanced.

@Bob oh no, you are right, also my CentOS 6.5 behaves the same

@Jacob My only question is, in System -> Advanced you can turn on "Allow IPv6". So that means it does support it... to some extent. I think it's just a blanket pass rule though.

@Wesley Yeah, pretty much.

2:54 PM
@Wesley Pretty sure 2.0+ supports IPv6, but 2.1 adds good tunneling support.

@MikeyB I think it supports it in the sense that it will pass IPv6 packets through, but can't take any action on it.

> "Well, your firewall must be doing something with IPv6 tunneling and forcing our DNS queries to return on IPv6 or something."
"We don't have a fucking clue how networking works so we'll blame this mysterious 'IPv6 thing'."

Right now by default it just blocks everything v6 period
So my 12 hour DNS capture on the firewall is 22MB
Nice. We'll see who has the last laugh
@MikeyB That is literally what is going on. I've spent so many hours tracking down information to prove it's not me that I should bill them.

@Wesley Yeah, just like IPv4 default. Anyways, yeah it's 2.1 that makes IPv6 a first-class citizen.

@Jacob Apparently it doesn't exist.

2:57 PM
@MikeyB Okay, so if you nslookup a host, you get a v4 response. if you ping, you get v4. But if you telnet, you get this:

@BigHomie Sys admining is fun to me.

-bash-2.05b# telnet updates.poopyvendor.net 443
Trying ::ffff:67.215.65.132...
Connected to updates.poopyvendor.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
So, it connects perfectly. It's just it shows a v6 address.

@Wesley Is that on the appliance?

@Wesley nothing to do with DNS. What do you get from 'host -a hostname'?

@Jacob Me too, but I still need a break, mostly from work, but sometimes from computers in general. Landscaping and Construction provide a nice escape, and weightlifting whenever I get around to doing it

2:58 PM
@Jacob Yes, but I don't have shell access. They do.

@Wesley What is it?
@BigHomie P90x! I don't feel to bad, but I have been doing other stuff.

@Jacob Depends, do you watch it on an electronic box??

@BigHomie well yeah?
