So, we have a robotics customer. They want us to take over their infrastructure. OK. Asked us for recommendations on switches. OK, HP switches like @ewwhite deploys. Nothing super fancy but they're manageable and can help protect their LAN when the FREQUENT events such as someone accidentally plugs in a rogue DHCP server because they're testing some robotics. No, they say, too expensive, we'll just buy these cheap Netgear switches. *grits teeth* Ask us to quote them a router/firewall for their new location.

@Wesley And guess what? Doesn't support openVPN, need to replace the VPN clients on everyone's laptops. Doesn't do DNS, need to install internal dns/dhcp. Doesn't support LDAP auth, need to set up radius.
Still working that out. Technically he sold it as our partner company, a Windows shop and they have no Windows servers. We're now taking them over from our partner company. Part of the problem is he sells these all the time to Windows shops - the deal is $1800/month flat rate PLUS ONSITE TIME. Guess what? Anything the Windows guys do, they come onsite to do. Whereas we do EVERYTHING remotely.

Which is a goddam shame really, they're a Linux shop, we are absolutely perfect for them. I know a few people there as well. (and a few people know me, in the "Oh! YOU'RE Supermathie!" sense)

@BigHomie True that, it is far more convenient, and would be awesome to have on all the client PCs I otherwise have to occasionally touch physically, but it's generally not that necessary, with how quick and easy reimaging has become.
@Wesley It's really not that bad but it's a business that's grown a lot over the past few years and now the internal techs (who set up the systems) rightly don't want to be handling it anymore.

The answer seemed really weird. The OP is asking for a solution, and the answer was not to use ReiserFS? Having experiencing ext2, ext3, ReiserFS (10+years), and lately ext4 - none has the speed and robustness of Reiserfs. Till today, ext4 still has the problem of not being able to free up space even though I had deleted lots of files. Overall Reiserfs is still among the best. — Peter Teoh2 mins ago

So vendor's appliance suddenly starts crapping itself because one application in their stack is mysteriously fiddling with IPv6 addresses and it doesn't know how to work with them. Their answer "Well, your firewall must be doing something with IPv6 tunneling and forcing our DNS queries to return on IPv6 or something."
I'm running pfSense 2.0.3 until I can get to the DC physically and oversee the update.

@Jacob My only question is, in System -> Advanced you can turn on "Allow IPv6". So that means it does support it... to some extent. I think it's just a blanket pass rule though.

@Jacob Me too, but I still need a break, mostly from work, but sometimes from computers in general. Landscaping and Construction provide a nice escape, and weightlifting whenever I get around to doing it
