@JourneymanGeek Do you have an AC unit sticking out?
So literally it's just, swing the window open and plummet to your death?
No ledge of any kind whatsoever?

Hello and good to you all

@RobM: the same to you, even if I have no clue what time of day it is ;p

@WesleyDavid I live on really high ground away from any rivers.

7:08 AM
@FalconMomot Dude, you are so high.
@RobM Give to me hug, comrade!

@WesleyDavid probably for the next hour, yes.

/hugs/ @WesleyDavid

@FalconMomot Light a menthol. Preserves the buzz.

Lizard bro hug.
@FalconMomot Mhmm.

7:10 AM
that is beautiful
also, burning paper is vile.

@FalconMomot Oh yeah? Well I'm vile!

Burning paper was the least of my worries when I smoked.

@FalconMomot: burning rainforests are viler.

@JourneymanGeek you at least will not have 3 months of people whining that the floodplains on which they built all their stuff flooded.

7:13 AM
@FalconMomot: set them on fire.

I live on high ground, near a coal-fired power plant, airport, and cable head-end.

/me lives on VERY high ground ;p

@JourneymanGeek interestingly enough, in Quebec today, a warehouse full of fireworks caught fire

25 th floor, atop a 2 story hill ;p
and the drainage for a defunct railway line

Calgary actually has an amazingly good stormwater system
the only problems we are having are a result of rivers breaking their banks. stormwater backup is not happening.

7:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek I like your style

it solves them being wet
and it solves them complaining

@JourneymanGeek Wow you're roof level?

"CITIZENS! WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH BABIES! GO. MAKE. MORE!"
"YOU, WHY ARE YOU STILL SINGLE! GET ATTACHED NOW!"
(tho the state nagging agency has sweet swag)

@JourneymanGeek What do Singapore women look like? Maybe I should be a male order husband.

The Social Development Network (SDN), formerly known as "Social Development Unit" (SDU), is a governmental body under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports of Singapore (now the Ministry of Social and Family Development), which works closely with the community and commercial sectors to foster opportunities for singles to interact in social settings in Singapore. Besides coordinating and facilitating dating activities offered by the private sector, it also serves to educate the public on singlehood issues. Other responsibilities of the SDN include providing the necessary in...
@WesleyDavid: varies

What's the culture? Are they sweet? Nice? Kind? Flaming nag-demons?

7:23 AM
we need to instate caning here.

I'm not really sure

I imagine it is pretty varied since it's all such a cultural mish-mosh.
Indian, Chinese, Malay, etc.

Precisely!
and even within them

Those are some fine looking peoples.

for some reason I read peoples as noodles initially

7:24 AM
@FalconMomot They make some fine noodles too!

mm ramen would be nice right now

Fine women. Fine Noodles. Life done right.

or any awesome noodles really

Laksa!

I google

7:25 AM
Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup from the Peranakan culture, which is a merger of Chinese and Malay elements found in Malaysia and Singapore, and Indonesia. Origin The origin of the name "laksa" is unclear. One theory traces it back to Hindi/Persian lakhshah, referring to a type of vermicelli, which in turn may be derived from the Sanskrit lakshas (लकशस्) meaning "one hundred thousand" (lakh). It has also been suggested that "laksa" may derive from the Chinese word (), meaning "spicy sand" due to the ground dried prawns which gives a sandy or gritty texture to the sauce. The last...

yeah, just read that page
it looks beautiful
sigh

I've been hanging out at home all week because everyone I know is being lame and won't leave their houses either

XD
I can't leave my house ;p

@JourneymanGeek Can I get a fine Singaporean girl, bubbly laugh, and a bowl of Laksa to go?

7:26 AM

I've been meaning to go to that awesome hardware store :/

@JourneymanGeek Go to that awesome place to stick a webcam.

Oh, my cat is so long.
"Korobeiniki" (, English translation: Peddlers) is a nineteenth-century Russian folk song that tells of a meeting between a peddler and a girl, in which they haggle over the price of goods in a veiled metaphor for courtship. Outside Russia, "Korobeiniki" is widely known because of its appearance in Nintendo's 1989 version of Tetris. History The song "Korobeiniki" is based on a poem with the same name by Nikolay Nekrasov, written and printed in the Sovremennik magazine in 1861. Due to its increasing tempo and the dance style associated with it, it quickly became a popular Russian folk son...

@JourneymanGeek Dude, your city-state-thing is really pretty.

@WesleyDavid: I'll let you know when I see it next ;p

Is your building visible in that shot?

people who devise these security standards belong in jail.

Internet 2.0: Butts just got Porky!
@FalconMomot They belong in pork butts.
74% Chinese in Singapore

@WesleyDavid they should be stuffed in there by means of caning.

7:32 AM
13% Malay

The PRC government belongs in jail >.>

Death by being caned into a pork butt. I like it.
9% Indian
3% "Other" aka "WTF are you?"

@WesleyDavid you could use that 50gal barrel of lube from amazon for it.

@FalconMomot No! Dry! Worse punishment.
Save the lube for the afterparty.

7:34 AM
@WesleyDavid: eurasians (who're a distinct culture) would count

@JourneymanGeek My honky ass too?

I am so bored......

@FalconMomot Go to sleep.

Heh, apparently I'm due to fly on monday
@WesleyDavid bored, not tired.
also I'm apparently biologically incapable of sleeping until at least 4 AM

@FalconMomot Learn Ruby.
@FalconMomot Passenger or pilot?

7:35 AM
@WesleyDavid though I must do so eventually, I really don't want to
@WesleyDavid pilot.

@FalconMomot Python?

@WesleyDavid already fluent.

@WesleyDavid: naw, you arn't honky, but yes your pale catbutt too.

@JourneymanGeek googled "Singapore women" - that's a mixed bag right there.

@WesleyDavid: absolutely

7:36 AM
Hitachi ID's scripting is all done in python

Got some good lookers, and some snaggletoothes.

hey, anyone in here actually seen a hitachi ID systems product in production?
:(
I want... some shanghai-style thick noodles in a very light sauce with peanuts, and lots of bean sprouts

@FalconMomot: my local wet market sells FRESH bean sprouts
like just sprouted

@JourneymanGeek they're actually really common here fresh
though I don't know how fresh
but like... not canned, for sure, and not really preserved
hmm
damn

@FalconMomot: fresh as in its sprouted in a dragon jar, by an old lady, who cleans off the skins right in front of you

7:40 AM
some pho or bun would be really nice right now also

@JourneymanGeek Okay, battery powered RaspberryPi, Webcam connected to it.

@JourneymanGeek is that like a mason jar?

@FalconMomot: much bigger

Hmm, I'm only about 550 points away from 5000 rep
soon I'll be able to approve tag wiki edits, of all the boring rights.
I wonder what the moderator panel looks like?

think a foot wide flowerpot
lol

7:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek what strange UI design

Eh, battery won't last long enough. Whargarble.
@JourneymanGeek What's your home internet speed like?

@WesleyDavid: 1.5 mbps I think
unless they upgraded itr

1.5?!

@JourneymanGeek Bandwidth cap?

Assuredly you guys have the density to do better :(
wow
I can get 165 times faster, with an unenforced cap

7:43 AM
nope
@FalconMomot: waiting for our contract to end before we switch to fiber

(the local cable provider offers 250/15 service)

might be faster, its fast enough for most things ;p

aah
I have a fibre drop in my place
but nobody will own up to having the other side of the cable.

I mean I run like half a dozen systems at once ;p
not a problem here ;p

@FalconMomot What kind of building do you live in?

7:44 AM
its all owned by a single company

@WesleyDavid apartment-like condos
I kind of live in the projects in a shitty part of town, except that they're new
about 80% of my neighbours are ethnic Iranian

@FalconMomot Wow, interesting.

I bought pretty much the cheapest place I could find, with a view to paying it off before I am 30

But it's gonna be cheap for a reason, right?

not an especially good reason

7:48 AM
lol

it's allegedly extremely far out of the way, except that I can skate to the train station in less than 10 minutes, and it's near a major highway (which I can't hear) and the airport (which I rarely hear)

we paid 30K for this place

Yeah, here, my parking stall is worth that

my neighbours bought an identical apartment for 1.6 million ;p

7:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek WAT.

the capital gains on that are insane.

(we got it at a discount, this block used to be owned by my dad's company, and someone worked out these apartments as such are considered private property)

morning

the flipside is, its IMPOSSIBLE to buy a similar apartment

@JourneymanGeek So that's like your dad's retirement savings then?
Meaning, he's at least got insane equity in the condo

7:51 AM
@WesleyDavid: Its not a condo ;p
it erm
two standard 1970s public housing units combined together ;p
even more wierdly half the blocks in my housing estate are standard public housing
and we have no intention of moving

hmm, I want yakisoba
and oshizushi
This looks amazing:

lol
I want a sammich

Okay lurvelies. Bed time.

rawr.

we're out of bread tho, suprisingly

7:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek I do not want bread.
or pickles.
I don't really want cheese and crackers, or ground turkey, or bacon, either.
or packaged ramen.

@FalconMomot: I have all the things I need for a kickass toastie

hmm.
nope
nor chips
nor plain rice
nor potatoes

course, not one of these tho

ugh, no, not today

7:58 AM
hello guys

Hmm, I could go away and procure hash browns... that might be OK
@iAmbitious oi.
listens to the crickets

yes i love it

you love too cricket @FalconMomot ?

@iAmbitious I meant that it was quiet in here.

8:00 AM
...

Hmm, that must be a different room egg.

I don't think I've ever seen a game of cricket, or listened to one, or known the rules.

Crickets, family Gryllidae (also known as "true crickets"), are insects somewhat related to grasshoppers, and more closely related to katydids or bush crickets (family Tettigoniidae) and Weta (families Anostostomatidae and Rhaphidophoridae). They have somewhat flattened bodies and long antennae. There are more than 900 species of crickets. They tend to be nocturnal and are often confused with grasshoppers because they have a similar body structure including jumping hind legs. Crickets are harmless to humans. Cricket chirping The sound emitted by crickets is commonly referred to as chi...
@FalconMomot: its like baseball, but with less running around in circles, and lunch breaks, and this civilised.

oh!!! i thought about cricket game (An Sport Event)

8:02 AM
/me sets the tumbleweed on water.
cause setting it on fire would not be classy

@JourneymanGeek baseball is a plague

so... baseball is to cricket what locusts are to crickets?

God disliked the US, and thinking that the punishment set on Sodom was a little crass, instituted baseball :P

8:22 AM

oh cool, our office365 accounts have been migrated to the latest version, now there is no more change password option in OWA

8:38 AM
Today is a bad spam day.

aha, that function has been moved to a new (?) portal page

what fun

seriously, office365 is one of the worst decisions that was ever made here
when we were migrated they only migrated our accounts but not our e-mail white/blacklist/junk-settings

I quite like Office 365 but it's not the simple job that many people seem to think that it is

8:54 AM
I'm just a user when it comes to office365 - I guess I'm easily annoyed by such things

well there are bits that annoy me both as an admin and as a user. In some places they've done some good, clever things and in others they've managed to really cock it up and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

btw. how do you manage expiring passwords?
I've noticed that if you only use Outlook you don't get a warning that your password is about to expire.
is there a trick around this?

9:23 AM
Oh goody - just had an email from Intel asking if I wanted some engineering samples of the new Xeons out in September - first new toys since coming back to work :)

9:35 AM
nice ;p

10:27 AM
Fuck me, the idea behind this is *terrifying*
http://www.lasikathome.com/index.html
DIY eye surgery?

That seems like a very bad idea

@TomO'Connor FUCK THAT NOISE

> The whole procedure takes only a few minutes and is virtually painless.*
> *This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA.
> NOPE.AVI

no no no no no no no no NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

10:43 AM
hm
its curious there is no news since 2006 ;p
/me thinks its just a ploy to sell Tshirts

Probably blinded themselves with their own laser, couldn't find the way out of the house and died of hunger.
2

to be honest, that would be a victory for Darwin

@tombull89 hahahahaha

11:06 AM
One of the vendor reps for a company is called Sara Whoredyke.
2
WTF

ah
oh well - have a look at this as an apology; twitter.com/peachesanscream/status/347658502195511296/photo/1 may be just a brit sense of humour thing
4

11:40 AM
damn its quiet

Ah to be 18 again. I would be all over the new secretary... drools

heh

@NathanC No way in hell!

Can IPTABLES block local LAN traffic or does it have to be outside the subnet of the computer?

12:00 PM
@Travis sure it can

I went a different route...just did a port block.
0
A: Securing a guest VM to give it internet access, but block access to host LAN

TravisYou say Linux so I'm assuming you have IPtables installed. You can only allow inbound/outbound traffic on port 80 (HTTP), port 443 (HTTPS) and outbound DNS. #delete all rules iptables -F #change default policy to drop everything iptables -P INPUT DROP iptables -P FORWARD DROP iptables -P OUTPU...

So I was attempting to set up a local minecraft server for a couple friends to play (so I wouldn't have to pay for a damn server...the host didn't even give me the files back) and I can't even have one remote player on it without them disconnecting.
It's so weird.

@NathanC Hmm, odd. What's the error message in the server console log?

disconnect.overflow
is what occurs. They basically try moving and fall through the world, then it kicks them

Are you running the original minecraft server jar or using something like CraftBukkit?

12:09 PM
It's the "Ampz" pack, it's not really heavily modded but definitely more than vanilla
I was showing ~1 mbps for a single player ...that seems like a lot heh

That's wayy too high, yeah, it's more like 100kbp/s you need.
I'd consider trying the basic MC server jar and see if you have any issues

Hm, true. I'll have to try it tonight. It's probably something with the modpack
My connection at home is a 20/2 so it should at least be enough for like 2 players

Not played MC for a while although I might pop back on when 1.6 comes out.
I found the modpacks a bit overwhelming.

They can be.
I played the Tekkit mod for quite a while. It adds tons of depth and can definitely be overwhelming

@Travis I saw that one too, but I suspect he doesn't want it configured inside the VM but block it outside of it

12:21 PM
@faker Yeah, maybe so. "Can I use Windows Firewall, or some routing software to allow me to give internet access to the guest, but block all other access?"

12:40 PM
Freaks

:O
I'm hurt

I can't ride my new bike because I'm waiting for a firmware update...
2
I think the software is open source, though

what the..?

12:55 PM
the mechanic totally didn't do all the firmware
everything in yellow has updates

what is that under the saddle that needs an update?

@faker my battery

Why the hell does a bike need firmware (or electronics?)

@Travis on super high-end bikes, the gear shifting is electronic

Like an automatic transmission or just electronically shifts when you hit a button?
