@WesleyDavid Wait, I thought it was Rebecca that left, not Aarthi. Did both leave SE?

@Adrian Zypher say that Aarthi left. I don't know about Reb.

@WesleyDavid Looks like Reb left in January. I was under a rock then working that crazy-ass job, so I wouldn't have noticed anyway.

@Adrian Oh wow, I had no idae

Hell, I think I went two months without popping in to visit here.

@Adrian Yeah I remember that. I thought you got mad and left us for good.

12:27 AM
@WesleyDavid Nah. Though I'll likely be disappearing to a far greater degree if I get this job. LOTS of things to learn about.
I'll probably still pop in on the evenings, but my day shift duties are going to slide big time.

@Adrian You'll know how I feel.

@ShaneMadden That was this past winter. I disappeared for 3-4 months before I was laid off.

Q: software for managing file distribution

user162636I'm looking for some software which will manage file distribution - the company I work for generates and consumes large quantities of (relatively small) files - nearly all are less than 100k in size, volume is around 20k files per day. We receive and send these files to customers and suppliers -...

@Adrian What'd I miss? Which position is this?
I'm waiting to get hit by the rep-recalc. I had someone go upvote crazy on old answers and I think I'm going to lose the bump.

@WesleyDavid it's a devops slot, sort of. Lot of ops but somewhat non-traditional too.

@Adrian So will you still be into Ruby?

@WesleyDavid Yeah. And they're a Ruby shop, so it's a great thing to learn.
It may slow the pace of my website redesign down, but it still needs to be done.

Ruby Ruby DOOO!!
Sorry, I had to
@Adrian When do you think you'll know if you got the gig?

12:55 AM
@WesleyDavid meet & greet with everybody at the office tomorrow night. so probably early next week.
though perhaps even on Friday, even though I'll be traveling that day.

@Adrian Is it near downtown?
Or let me guess, Bellevue.
Wow, I can spell.

@WesleyDavid Happily, Downtown. I vastly prefer working downtown to the Eastside. I'd go over there, but the attitude on the Eastside is far less pleasant.
James Gandolfini passed away. =(

@Adrian I stayed in Bellevue for a few days once. Really snobby crowd. Then again, I live in Scottsdale now, but people are pretty chilled out over here in spite of being fabulously wealthy. The fabulously wealthy in Bellevue seemed like they were crushing diamonds with their sphincter all day.
"Got a new diamond Rolex. Better stick it up the cloud."

@WesleyDavid Yes, and my lady has no use for them. Considering the people she grew up around in rocky mountain ski resort towns could buy most of the Eastsiders with pocket change yet were still really chill & cool people.

I'm trying to find the motel I was in. It was right downtown, but it was ghetto as frick.
The carpet was sticky and it smelled like cheap hookers.
Not that I am terribly familiar with the odor of cheap hookers... <_<

1:19 AM
@WesleyDavid Eww. =(

@WesleyDavid: only dead ones ? ;p

@WesleyDavid Downtown bellevue? Probably the old Red Lion Inn.
@JourneymanGeek No, that's down on the other end of town down by the livestock molesters and pedophiles.

ahh right ;p
as you can tell, I have bever been to Bellevue ;p

@JourneymanGeek You're not missing much. If you've ever been to KL, it's a lot like Putrajaya or Damansara when compared to downtown KL.

ahh
or holland road compared to the rest of singapore ;p

snork Snagged a low-hanging fruit this afternoon. OP posted the answer to his own question in a comment.

@Adrian The hard trick is getting them to mark accepted. :)

@jscott Amen to that.

@Adrian I've done that once before. It felt awfully nice.

2:04 AM
@Adrian You know what's funny? I think it was.
@Adrian No... the parking lot was on the east side. I remember that. It was single-level, room doors opened into the parking lot, which was looking east.
Red Lion has north and west parking lots.
Welll... it has some eastern parking lots too actually. Doesn't look familiar though. It was a small thing, not that big I thought...
Oh well, not important.
@ShaneMadden They got you working harder than a cat burying poop on a marble floor?

@WesleyDavid One of these days, I'll get caught up. Just.. too much stuff.

2:23 AM

@MDMarra Your cat looks totally sketch at the end. "A lollipop stick? I'mma mug that punk!"

He also makes an appearance in the mirror shot
arched back and all

@MDMarra I love how Katie gave you the "are you fucking serious" look in all those pictures.

yup

@MDMarra I also notice you spelled her name wrong. You should fix that.

2:26 AM
Did I?
Oh, no it's right

Lier.

Catherine with a "C", Katie with a "K"
weird like that

Wait, seriously. She does that?

ya

Librarians are weird.

2:27 AM
her dad wanted her to be katheryn or some shit
but her mom filled out the birth certificate and went with a C
so she's in stuck between worlds her whole life

Kathryn is a good British spelling.
Could be worse, it could be Katherine. That's just an abomination.
At least Catherine has a nice Russian vibe to it.

yup
ok, im going to go die now from that buffalo wrap i had for dinner
bye, pals

Sweetest dreams.

@MDMarra Good way to go. Nice knowing you!

3:06 AM
@Adrian I'm not sure whether congratulations or wishes of good fortune are in order, but... nice!
@Adrian Was it a 4-person team when you were there, or are they hiring multiple people to take your place?

Q: How can I determine IOPS on a disk array using bonnie++?

Stefan LasiewskiI would like to measure the read and write performance of a RAID6 array verses a RAID10 array. I understand that bonnie++ can be used to calculate disk performance, but the numbers produced by bonnie++ don't include terms like 'IOPS'. These days, many of the disk performance articles and howtos m...

what determines if chat will insert a <hr> for "read up to here"?

@MilesErickson Woah. Yeah, I mentored all those Ops positions there. I'll have to ask my better half to check the staff database and see if it's a growth position or the guy left. He may've left because of who they hired for Director instead of me.
@MilesErickson And Thanks. I'm hoping this one works out. It's looking really good so far. I think both the company and I are a good fit for one another.
@MilesErickson Ah. Here we go. Looks like rumor has it that the holder of that position got promoted to my old one. Which makes sense. There's nobody there who can do it as well as he can since I taught him most of what he knows about it.

3:43 AM
New Bike Day... but nobody but @iain and @freiheit care :(

4:27 AM
@ewwhite Got a new bike, same as the old bike
Does that mean you've now got a bike going on ebay?

@Adrian Seems like decent compensation for the qualifications they're asking. They ought to get someone good.

4:48 AM
@MilesErickson wages are really that low? I got paid that to manage a retail computer service department.

@FalconMomot For someone with one year of experience? Sure.

oh, I missed that part
hmm, do I have 2 years of experience yet I wonder?

@FalconMomot That job description seems to be more interested in recruiting someone with aptitude than specific experience, which is the right way to go about hiring a support person.

@MilesErickson it is. you don't often see it though.
Nope. 4 months shy of 2 years' experience.

@FalconMomot So many HR departments here post lists of specific tools that they require experience with, and then they make the mistake of not publishing their salary range, and then they wonder why the hell they don't get any good applicants. Idiots.

4:56 AM
@MilesErickson or they publish nonsense as requirements, like people asking for applicants with experience storing calendars in AD
I've gotten calls from recruiters who will talk about neither the identity of the employer nor the salary range

I don't get why companies don't publish salary ranges. It's a lose-lose proposition for them, and it discourages 90% of the really qualified applicants from bothering to apply. To me, "DOE" or "Competitive" means "we're embarrassed to admit how little we're willing to pay for this position, so don't bother applying unless you're desperate."

@MilesErickson it's to protect their ability to low-ball you, which is also dumb.
as once I find out I'm the least paid person in the department by 20% and am due to get the same 3% raise as everyone else next review, I write notice.

Q: How to find files by the time in their filename?

HowardWe have a directory contains files which contains time in their filename ./test.2013-06-11_06-01.gz ./test.2013-06-12_01-01.gz ./test.2013-06-13_03-01.gz ./test.2013-06-14_03-01.gz ./test.2013-06-15_04-01.gz How to list files if their filename are more than N days before?

@FalconMomot I still don't get it. Say they publish a range of 50-80K and they offer an applicant 50. Someone in that position can't hold out for 75K unless it's justified.

5:00 AM
@Andrew at best migrate to U&L. It has nothing to do with system admin.
@MilesErickson yeah, it's totally unjustified, but still.

I've heard so many stories of people wasting their time applying for a position, going through a couple of interviews, and then getting offered $15 an hour or whatever.

For this reason I pretty much never apply to those postings
I like to shop around all the time to see what salary range I should be getting for my skills, which might be one reason people are so skittish about disclosing (lest wages go up, as kind of a responsibility thing except that it would be irresponsible)

@voretaq7 Lookie! Lookie! Lookie!

Anyone seeing problems with domains registered with network solutions? The gtld servers seem to be kicking back hijacked records.

@voretaq7 Found him in the middle of the kitchen floor. He scampered away, but I tracked him down and put him outside. I hope geckos aren't cannibals because there was a big fat one stuck on the porch wall. I put this little guy a little ways away from the big one.

@ShaneMadden I had a client domain blip off the radar a few days ago for about an hour. No network devices were down, and their main domain that's hosted on my Media Temple VPS was unreachable by domain name, and so was a subdomain that is hosted on a dedi in my rack.
The only common denominator was NetSol as their DNS provider because no ICMP level outages were reported for any node.
Root causes analyses was inconclusive because I didn't have all the reports I needed, but I concluded NetSol had some weird hiccup.

@WesleyDavid Yeah, the nodes are up and the authoritative DNS servers are fine. But the delegation chain from .com is hijacked to ztomy.com.

@ShaneMadden Wow, that seems big?
Are we going to be seeing this plastered all over Hacker News in an hour?

Probably.

5:21 AM
@ShaneMadden Looks like this is old hat for ztomy.

@WesleyDavid I'm passing it on right now. Anyone want to provide a couple more details to make it credible? :)

@WesleyDavid Yeah, I'm just confused as to how the heck the bogus data got into (all) the gtld nodes.

nfc what people hope to gain by this

@MilesErickson Also netsol.
Brilliant!

who in their right mind would register domain names with people who do that kind of shit?

Goddamnit I hate it when archivers extract to a temp folder and then copy them to their destination. I just spent 10 minutes waiting for a 40Gb file to be extracted, and now I'm waiting while the damn thing is copied from the temp folder
WHY DIDNT YOU JUST EXTRACT IT TO WHERE I WANTED IT TO; AND IF YOU MUST EXTRACT TO TEMP WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU COPYING INSTEAD OF MOVING?
Now I have to wait another 10 minutes while it's copied

I'm so glad my browser comes with this nice console that lets me remove things from the DOM with a few button presses...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I've got some work to do with my new bike.

did I hear... new bike?
finally? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Also, I'm a liar.

ahh right
nearly went out and bought a lottery ticket ;p

Rapid deploy helmets! Yo dawg! I heard you like whiplash so we put an exploding sack of air on your head so you can get hyperextension injuries before you get hyperextension injuries!

7:19 AM
@WesleyDavid people are marketing them for horse riders too. Brilliant idea, not. Having a vest/helmet go off with a bang at a time when the horse is already spooked, or in a group... Not something I'd recommend.

7:35 AM
Doesn't sound like a good idea for anyone. Whether on a bike or a horse it seems to me that you're better off wearing a normal helmet for all kinds of reasons.

7:48 AM
Fucking Supermicro!
2

morning and fuck supermicro to you too
there's a motto we can all get behind...

It's terrible...
A client calls in... says that there are thousands of open connections on their server... localhost... Windows box.
It's making SNMP go nuts.
So I check the weirdo port out... 34572...
and it belongs to Adaptec Storage Manager.
okay... so Supermicro at various points has used Adaptec and LSI controllers... rebranded as Supermicro.
I check the asset-management system and see: "Supermicro AOC-USAS-S8iR"

bloody hell that looks a mess

as the RAID controller.
so a quick google shows... maybe that's an LSI controller.
The server has Adaptec and LSI management software installed.

no wonder it's unhappy then

7:53 AM
so I'm like... well, let's open the Adaptec shit.
"No controllers were found in this system"
well, okay... so I just stopped the service and uninstalled the Adaptec software.

so why install the software then facepalm

(because both software was installed in the Windows image we deployed)

right

Earlier that day, another financial client had the same issue on an HP server imaged with the same Windows image.
the HP server obviously didn't have adaptec gear in it.
so it turns out that the Supermicro AOC-USAS-S8iR is an Adaptec controller!!
how the fsck would anyone know that...

I....

7:56 AM
so dumping the software fixed the problem... but it opens up a can of worms. Why didn't the software behave right? Shit, do we have RAID monitoring?

You know what, I got nothing...

I mean, over the years, Dell has switched controller manufacturers... but man, i really expect consistency.
but based on the screenshots, I think I made a good guess.

I've never had problems like that with Dell - they're a long way from perfect but they've not dropped the ball like that with any of the servers we have

so I told the client the software was unnecessary... so they started uninstalling the Adaptec stuff...
and then my NOC staff was like, "no, don't... we need that"

@RobM Yup. I could sort of see the point with the vests back when safety vests were very stiff and restricted movement, but the modern ones are both safe and comfortable and don't impede your ability to ride.

7:59 AM
oh god
@JennyD even when vests were uncomfortable, better to be a bit uncomfortable than a bit lots of broken bones, right

but maybe my Google-Fu (or Bing-Fu) is really bad.
Just as a sidenote, I'm realizing that my Google results these days are really not that useful.

@RobM well, when they actually impeded your movements they were arguably making riding somewhat less safe as it could make it harder for you to keep your seat when the horse suddenly moves in an unexpected way. So back when that was the only kind available I would only use them when jumping or riding off-road. At least once, when I was thrown out in the woods and landed on a largish stone, I think the vest saved me from a kidney injury...
Breaking a leg or arm isn't that bad; you recover from it. It's the back and brain that need protection.
(and yes, I've broken both arm and leg when riding. Not at the same time, though :-)

8:17 AM
@ewwhite Hmm, I don't get it... why rebrand if you're going to leave the real manufacturer's name on the drivers?

8:30 AM
@FalconMomot Just because... I don't fully understand Supermicro, but that's how they do things.
And where did Michael Hampton go?

ah i see @JennyD

@ewwhite In a comment on Meta he said he was going on vacation

@JennyD not possible!!!

@JourneymanGeek usually over half the close votes I see are "you're dumb" votes, rather than actually OT/NC

8:45 AM
@FalconMomot: You're dumb is a valid reason to close things here

@JourneymanGeek not if they are otherwise on topic. Isn't it better to explain a basic concept, or answer that the approach is wrong?
or sometimes the close vote is just because nobody has heard of the component they are having problems with

@FalconMomot: well, there's the 'professional' part of things

@JourneymanGeek having worked in the field for a couple years I can attest that there are some pretty damn misguided professionals around getting paid more than I am to do this.
like... people who have been IT consultants for half a decade or more and still don't understand subnets.

@FalconMomot: amusingly, I've argued the other side of this arguement but, I think the whole idea is that SF can't keep the useful smart people, if we're wading in, and I quote this exactly "A river of shit"
and explaining concept questions often need to DIATF

8:49 AM
there is a line, to be sure
on the other hand, there is "I don't like this idea, so I'm going to vote it NC":

@FalconMomot: the latter is often a symptom of the x-y problem
the first is kinda broad. Also, he's doing it at the wrong place

The latter question is perfectly fair.
the first one is someone doing something which would annoy anyone it is done to, but that is often an actual requirement (made by misguided fools).

@FalconMomot Agreed - other than the moral questionability, that is a totally valid question, not the best, definitely, but valid. Regarding "pro's" that seem stupid because they don't understand something basic, like subnetting, I'd argue that it's better to try and educate them and hopefully make the world a better place

anyway

@JourneymanGeek If you want an archive of everything they receive, sure. Otherwise grant an exchange administrator role Read rights on all mailboxes. Use OWA to go trough peoples mailboxes

9:00 AM
I think we can draw a line like this: "what I am doing is basically what a home user would do, and even if I were a professional the environment I am having problems with is insufficient and imposes absurd constraints; these problems would be trivial except that my environment is too far from an enterprise-ready one" | "I don't know how to do my job but I have all the tools available for me to do it and I am conversant in this field".

amusingly we actually forward every sent mail, and download all the mails we recieve to gmail, cause my dad keeps bloody forgetting to renew the office domain ;p
@FalconMomot: don't forget GIMMEZECODE!

someone should invent a service that recorded important dates and reminded you of them. They could call it a calendar.

@JourneymanGeek those questions can be answered without the code, actually, and will still get upvotes more often than not.
@JourneymanGeek I think another category of thing that can definitely be NC is the "<log vomit> what I want to know is obvious; fix it for me"

the "professional" requirement on Server Fault is for a standard of question more than it is of a level of user.

also, the 500 rep bounty on this is really annoying me...

@Nathan I'm not looking for shopping advice, but am trying to learn about the existing software options in a field that is completely new to me - since I am a computer enthusiast and power user. If I had a very specific technical question about any relevant product, it would be on topic, right? — MHaaZ 1 min ago

@NathanC: actually, you're entirely right there

A: How can I MOVE, not copy all the files with the same extension?

TravisIn DOS do: FOR /R "C:\MoveFromDirectory" "%i" IN (*.mp3) DO MOVE "%i" "C:\Move2Directory" Change the "MoveFromDirectory" to the directory you are searching in. Change the *.mp3 to whatever file extension you need to. Change Move2Directory do the location of where you are wanting to move them ...

That's actually fairly useful.
