1:01 PM
it's still manual

I see that. Interesting read
Is it possible to have a backup DHCP server like you can with DNS?
I think I read somewhere you can't, which is why I haven't

@Travis ISC DHCP has had it for ages... so Linux, yes. WIndows 2012 seems to have it now.

I'm working with 08

nah, no options.
@MDMarra What's the best way to handle dhcp failover in Windows 2008? Delays and overlapping scopes?

Seen on NANOG earlier: server-sky.com
@ewwhite Is there an overview page about your bike electronics? I mentioned this in the office and heard a few "WHAT???"s :)

1:14 PM
@ewwhite No need for a delay
just do non-overlapping split scope
or failover clustering if you're dead fucking serious about it
Or upgrade to 2012 and get with the program!

How do you actually do the failover to the other scope? I'm guessing it just picks it up automatically when the first doesn't respond?

2012 R2 will be out this winter!

Does it act a load balancer also?

@ewwhite Migrate to IPv6

@Travis with a non-overlapping split scope both will answer but since the scopes don't overlap it doesn't matter
with failover clustering there's only one active node at a time
and the DHCP database is on shared storage between them

1:17 PM
Hmmmm...

Will it allow for faster DHCP responses to the client? It seems like it takes forever for my machines to get an IP address when they're first started up. Not sure if it's the NIC settings though (offloads or something)

morning

@Travis sounds like a non-portfast port problem or you the DHCP servers don't think they're authoritative

@MikeyB what? that picture is based on a real product?! ahahahaha :D

1:19 PM
@MikeyB heh, well... Look up Shimano Di2 - competitivecyclist.com/…

@Travis that's not usually a DHCP server problem

@TomO'Connor Customer has a person we deal with in purchasing named 'Holly Wood'.

DHCP puts almost no load on the server. If it's slow you've usually got a L2/L3 prob

@MikeyB I have the ports on the switch set to spanning-tree portfast (cisco)
@MikeyB I have it "authorized" but how do I make it authoritatives

@MikeyB Student at my previous school with the surname "Titaporn"

1:21 PM
@tombull89 I know a woman doing her postgrad named "Cockshut". Poor girl.

Oliva Wilde's real surname is Cockburn. Which is unfortunate.

Better than Whoredyke

There's a woman at my work with the last name "Moist"
2

I knew a girl in the navy...her last name was seaman...so she was Seaman Seaman

mornin' gents.

1:24 PM
@Travis err.... add the 'authoritative' command to the dhcpd.conf file?

@Travis Double seaman

at least it wasn't Seaman Semen

@Travis Just as well her suname wasn't "Staines".

lol

Does Linux support labeling drives/partitions/slices/whatever-they're-called-in-Linux so you can make a mirror from /dev/some_path/mydrive0 and /dev/some_path/mydrive1, then specify that as the bootloader's target? I can't believe you'd be locked into using archaic BIOS drive numbering or device names that are dependent on drive location/controller configuration.

@ChrisS yes

@ewwhite this guy needs some help with that apparently

Meh, not enough energy to answer.

[but]...I got in trouble for this one was we had to get a cable across a regular hard ceiling that was about 40-50ft long. After using all of our wire pulling rods and taping anything else we had to them to extend their reach we were still like 10 feet shy and couldn't find anything else to hook it with from the other side....so I got the bright Idea to use my compund bow that was in my truck from hunting to shoot the string across.
It worked great except instead of just kind of losing momentum it hit the brick at the other end and went through the ceiling into someone important's desk.

Nice
"Used to work for a company that had a few Datacenters in San Diego, They used to do weekly tests to ensure the generators worked and the system would kick over to generator power. Good thing right?

Well they failed to take into account they were burning fuel during said tests. So during an actual power outage they realized we only had 2-3 hours of fule on site and our contracts with fuel companies were for within 12 hours.

The CEO lined the bed of his truck with a tarp and drove to a fuel station to pump diesel into the bed of his truck. I realized he had done this after he shows up with

1:45 PM
The duct taped switch makes it even more funny
"A coworker stored a casserole in our hot aisle containment area to keep it warm for the holiday lunch one year."
lol

yep lol

So if you google "gay" the page turns Rainbow.

Wow, that's pretty gay.

@tombull89 type "do a barrel roll"

Can you chat with someone that isn't here? (man that sounds dumb) for example if I type (at) username that isn't here, will they get a comm room alert? I don't want to send pauska a message in one of his questions on SF.

1:55 PM
No
But @pauska is here

? he doesn't appear to be

@TheCleaner Yes, they'll get a notification in their inbox.
Pauska is here enough for chat to predictive type his name:

@pauska is like Beetlejuice - say his name three times and he shows up.

@jscott maybe your chat program is better than mine... :)

how odd
@Cole ping someone three times and they're likely to stab you because of the ping noise.

2:07 PM
@TheCleaner Maybe you weren't here when they were here?

@tombull89 :P

@TheCleaner Type you're response and we'll tag him in it :)

hah...ok
@pauska, any update on your RDP/MPLS/QoS issue? Just curious.

I have no sound at work so :P

@Cole @Cole @Cole @Cole

2:08 PM
@tombull89 I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALA

lol

I wonder if that counts as 1 or 4?

but that (1*) in the tab drives me nuts

@TheCleaner @pauska any update on your RDP/MPLS/QoS issue? Just curious.
@Cole Lucky for me too

Someone know what a Titan card is? smart jack T1 card is my guess, but curious.

2:12 PM
Looks like a card in some sort of cross connect device

@TheCleaner whoa looks like Captain Caps Lock is sailing the Qwerty Sea over there at TW.
3

@Cole Lot of that when I worked at IBM too. Was annoying.

@Adrian DRIVES ME NUTS

@Cole NUTS NUTS NUTS NUTS!!!!!!111111!!!!!!!!!!!

XD

2:15 PM
Don't mind me. I have 400 miles to ride today on 5 hours sleep after partying until midnight with my hopefully-future-coworkers.

@Cole - I think their software forces all caps in the resolution output email. The ticket notes show it normal

There's software out there called e-mail stripper? Heck yeah! I want some chick to strip while she reads my email to me!

@Travis Thanks...if that's the case then I'm guessing the LEC did this at the CO. I'll check with the remote office and see if a tech ever showed up onsite at all.

imgur.com/96wPuWg got hard drives?

@NathanC Too bad they're all 2 GB

2:17 PM
@NathanC 400W PSU?

@Adrian Whoa, congrats?

Yeah I saw that one lol

@TheCleaner We got a new phone system in and the caller ID worked prior to having it put in. I struggled with out telephone contractor and with AT&T to figure out why. AT&T came on site several times (charging up $400) and verified we were receiving the caller ID info. The contractor couldn't figure out why the phone wasn't receiving them as the phone system was set up correctly.
@TheCleaner I finally got AT&T and the contractor here togther and they're standing there scratching their head. I asked what's that "box" do? They both shrugged and said it must belong to the other guy. Unplugged and bypassed it and bam...caller ID worked. It was some sort of T1 Adlan thing or something.

@TheCleaner THAT'S TERRIBLE.

2:20 PM
@Iain Please anyone help me very urgent my rates start at £90/hour

@Iain I...I don't even...

@Iain I deleted SYSTEM32 and now my system won't boot. Can I get it back?

@Iain sparkplugs bro...sparkplugs... :)

user image

@TheCleaner the answer is equivalnt to sparkplugs

2:21 PM
lol

Heh, reminds me of my kiddo asking wtf that phone was doing in a box on the sidewalk.

And something for @WesleyDavid i.imgur.com/PnZCLJ0.jpg

Diabeetus?

Anyone have a quick way to remote support an Android device, at no cost? The end user is barely able to use a phone, and is in Qatar, so it needs to be idiot proof.

@DanBig Teamviewer for Android?

@tombull89 only samsung I think

yeah, its a Moto phone, TV is out

@ChrisS Scared the bejesus out of me! Then I saw the cat! :shocking

@DanBig Ouch. My condolences. =(

Ah didn't realise it was Samsung only.

2:26 PM
Sucks, and i know for a fact its a data error, not a problem with the phone, as no other devices in the states are having issues with EAS

@jscott Thanks. It's looking really good at this point. Hoping to get a call today with an offer.

@Adrian Cool, hope your ride isn't too brutal.

@jscott Oh, it's going to be a long and occasionally wet ride. But The Palouse is stunningly beautiful so it'll be worth it.

2:36 PM
So the Science technician was googling "liquid latex" (for mold making) but it was coming up blocked. So we let her use the bypass proxy...and got a bit more than bargained for.
4

lol
no safesearch?
also the safe thing to search for might be RTV rubber

lol

@tombull89 Hot.

@tombull89 And now that's in my search history.
Oh, Reddit. "When the Anti-Christ makes himself known upon the Earth, beginning his thousand year reign of darkness and terror, he will use Access to track his many sins and plagues."
Ooooh.

2:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't matter what you "safesearch", if you scroll through enough images you'll eventually find something that's NSFW.

I guess ;p

3:15 PM
Can we revoke sysadmin cards?
The guest is running Linux, the host is running windows, but I assume this routing is for the host? — Francis Appa 2 hours ago

@Travis and this is why we need a professional licensing body.
@tombull89 . . . that's... not what you search for when you're talking about modeling and mold making.
@JourneymanGeek "Latex casting material" is the proper term IIRC

@voretaq7 I even prefaced it with..."You say Linux so I'm assuming you have IPtables installed"

@ChrisS Who wants to safe search anyway?

@Travis With that comment...does he know how to Windows?
Even a newbie sysadmin knows iptables is a Linux thing :(

3:22 PM
@Iain you mean the one I rolled back because they're an entitlement-minded prat?

I wonder if we can have the info block from my profile displayed to everyone the first time they visit server fault?
Please Note:

I expect you to read any reference material I link to in my answers. If the answer to your question is contained in said reference material and the reference source is not likely to disappear I will probably not cut and paste it onto SF unless it's really cool/interesting/obscure.
In return I promise not to link anyone to goatse or tubgirl

I expect you to think for yourself and do a little thinking (and mayhaps even some work) to solve your problems. If you aren't capable of this, please exit the profession via the door on your left.

I typically exhaust all resources before posting a question here. Especially for the "odd" behaviors since I like puzzles.
Except when the puzzles hate me and don't want to be solved. :(

@NathanC same, and when I finally decide to post the question I usually end up getting all the information together for a proper question and solve it in the process myself

@NathanC I think he probably needs to be in SU

3:30 PM
@voretaq7 that'll be the one

@voretaq7 Yep...I agree. Really sucks when you google their question and the first response that comes up is the answer...

@Travis sucks when you hand them the answer and a link and their only response is "Please do the work for me, I'm an entitlement-minded prat"

Q: Debian whois vs RHEL jwhois

Joshua D'AltonNot trying to start a distro-war or anything like that, just trying to get to the bottom of why Debian seems to have some sort of branch of jwhois called whois (why wasn't it called whois in the first place we'll never know, thanks GNU.org..?). And further, well not really a further, though I'd ...

I don't think this belongs....anywhere.

In honor of @hamptonsborn's impending retirement I'm going to start calling those users "InkBoy"
I'm also seriously considering rescinding my pledge not to link people to tubgirl.

@voretaq7 Disguise it in a bit.ly link and you'll be good to go lol
Of course, I got in trouble a few weeks ago here for linking someone to a lmgfy link
So, I try to behave myself. :P

3:37 PM
@voretaq7 Yep
@NathanC I've done that on a few occasions...especially when it really is the first hit on google

Mine was actually. I literally answered with some info from the first link in google. Then I got a nice little mod message saying not to do it anymore. Many occasions I still want to...
Or either that, feed them to Bing.

So the mod said you shouldn't answer with google info or shouldn't give them lmgfy?

@Travis As far as I'm concerned if someone is that obtuse it's perfectly acceptable (but the official policy that I'm bound to enforce is you can't give them a LMGTFY link)

Got it

@Travis lmgfy is universally banned. Answering with a link to google is frowned upon as we want people to come here to get answers

3:40 PM
Should be more frowned the fact the person didn't come with a question that doesn't have 100 pages on the internet with answers
I find a lot of questioned answered already with TechNet or KB articles

@Travis yeah :(

@Travis that's OK as long as it's not a question like "How do I move the mouse?"

Right
Like the question I answered with iptables. Not a great question and his answer was on Google, but you kind of have to know what you're looking for

My answers are frequently "According to [this technet article that I googled] you flip these three switches. I'm not a Windows admin so don't blame me if your shit blows up."

lol

Q: Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server

user998824I'm trying to configure remote desktop services on a windows server 2012 Hyper-V Virtual Machine and I get the error at the RD virtualization host server. Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server is there a way to enable this on the virtual processor? the VM is running on a...

@Travis it's easier to ask the internet than to google yourself - and SF end up with a river of shit questions as a result and no way to improve quality without us being labelled mean and nasty

Yo dawg, I heard you wanted to virtualize, so we virtualized your virtual machine so you can virtualize while you virtualize!

Uhh...wtf?

@Travis The Internet. Don't ask.
2

@Iain That's what Technet is for...asking stupid questions
@NathanC That crap is $25! noboysallowed.03sbgt.com/2013/06/20/…

3:43 PM
@Travis Have you seen the SF front page anytime this year ?

@Iain Yep...
1 hour ago, by Travis
@Iain I deleted SYSTEM32 and now my system won't boot. Can I get it back?

@Iain honestly? No.
I use my "Favorite Tags" page
the only exposure I have to the vast stupidity these days is when I look at naked "New Questions" or the close queues

Like this one @voretaq7 ?

Q: Rewrite x-forwarded-for

MagdClient - LB - App Server I have an app that supports http or https. If the original request is https, but the server is expecting http, it won't work. Is it possible to use nginx to rewrite the x-forwarded-for? The client requests https://x.x.x.x, but the server sees http://x.x.x.x

How come I never see any "reviews" for first posts and what not?

@Travis the volume is relatively low
100-rep users don't go into it either AFAICT
so all the people coming here for "internet tech support" with associated accounts get a free pass.

3:50 PM
The queue builds a bit during the evenings for me (EST)
I saw it at I think 8 last night.

oh, i'm out after work. I don't logon

@Travis YOU HATE US! :'(
😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿😿

Ugh, I have a feeling this nagging headache is going to kick my ass for the rest of the day.

@voretaq7 Yep. Money stops flowing in after work :)
@voretaq7 Plus the race car takes up a lot of after work time

Since my boss is gone and everything's humming along I spend more time here than doing "work" ...sad really. :p
At least I look busy!

3:53 PM
Learn some things on occasion. Like I tell folks. "If IT is working, nothing is working. If IT isn't working, then everything is working."
3

That's actually a good excuse. :D

Obviously you have to plan for things like lifecycle, upgrades, etc if your company allows. I'm fortunate. We have a 5 minute plan for the company. So as long as mine lasts at least 6 we're in the clear.

@Travis "If I'm always running around fixing shit I'm not doing my job"

Exactly. They don't get it. Most of my calls are "why is this damn program so slow"....uhh...because it's from the 80's and shitty. "Fix it!" Give me $500k and I will... "Oh...we're good now"
I write better programs in DOS
I feel a little daredevilish today. Think I'll venture over in to SU!

It looks like that time @wesleydavid went on Maury!

4:03 PM
Oh wow

@Travis Upgrades? Don't you need you know, a budget for that?
I don't even know if we have a budget for the rest of the year...

Also, going on your previous comment: "If you're not working to put yourself out of a job, you're not working hard enough."
@voretaq7 Ah, I was wondering where that budget was! Now to sell that truck so we have money for things we need. :p

I had the owner of the company complain to me because I implemented a function that shut down our financial package for all users so one lady could close the day out. Basically it closed all their sessions and then renamed the exe file so their shortcuts don't work.
He wanted me to back up the time and cited that another "competitor" company ships things up until 6 PM and we need to do the same and cutting the system off hurts that
So i did some research on "competitor"
1. They are open 24 hours and have their shipping department there 24 hours a day. Ours stops shipping at 3:30.

@Travis to be fair blocking all users so someone can run end-of-day is kinda,,,bleh?

4:07 PM
2. Their annual IT budget ($120mil) is more than our operating revenue
@voretaq7 It's a necessary requirement to close the day. While she is in the middle of closing the day the reps like to go make last minute changes and screws up the general ledger. The reports she prints out to reconcile the day won't match the CFO's report
Did I mention this is 1980's software?

@Travis then why is it multi-user?! :)
(and why the fuck don't you guys just use QuickBooks like every other company? :P)

Our production is done at like 3:30 but shipping goes to midnight
makes it a pain in the ass to schedule updates and such since sometimes production will be operating on saturday

It isn't multiuser really. If any user is running a report it locks them out of accessing any data associated with it
@voretaq7 QuickBooks won't work for us either :)

Heh, even our software is a bit more intelligent and it works off flat files on a Windows share.

@Travis quickbooks works for everyone. It requires some creativity though...

4:15 PM
not robust enough

I really want to set up DFS for it because if the server with the share falls over production grinds to a nice halt that costs lots o' money

Sage 50 won't even work for us

@Travis ACCPAC?

@voretaq7 That sounds like something that needs to be changed. In fact, the opposite might be appropriate: anyone with over 2k rep on SO gets their question automatically flagged. :P

or the new SAGE stuff?

Q: What signal is sent to running process after network fail?

SSH ThisI am trying to reproduce a situation where a process fails due to a network outage. I was hoping to reproduce this signal with a kill command. A normal kill command is not working. my brain....

The new stuff from abougt 6 months ago

A: What signal is sent to running process after network fail?

voretaq7None. A "network failure" is not a signal.

It sends a NACK :)

@Travis Not always
and NAK isn't a signal.

Look at this dick's comment; serverfault.com/a/517586/1435 - off to see WWZ :)

4:30 PM
@Travis Sounds like YOUR COMPANY may be a candidate for CUSTOM ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE

I'm pretty sure he's the one who downvoted my answer too

@voretaq7 Nope...we need a different way of doing things. The new ERP packages will actually handle us. Sage just wouldn't handle the way our inventory is according to the rep we talked to

I wish I didn't know who that is - but I do

@voretaq7 I was playing with the NACK
@Chopper3 It's a method

And last minute trouble ticket before i go to lunch ...joy.

4:33 PM
@Chopper3 he's the Yo Dawg meme dude

@NathanC well I just upped it anyway :)

(that's really all I know him as... I'm vaguely aware that he "pimps" "rides" when he's not being a meme)

@NathanC oh my, you have to do that ticketing thing - man I'm glad I don't have to - I'd be at the end of a rope within a week
@voretaq7 actually I meant his, not particularly good, rapping style

@Chopper3 that distinguishes him from 87% of other rappers...how? :)
his eyebrows.... they look like something Amanda Palmer drew

4:49 PM
good day gents

@NickM. O-H-A-I

pretty quiet today
You guys must actually be doing some work today
Anyone here familiar with Microsoft Licensing for CAL's?
