7:02 PM
@MichaelHampton pretty much
@Travis it's not the meeting - it's Lotus
Lotus anything sucks.
Ask anyone, they'll agree - Lotus Domino/Notes/Connections/etc should die a painful death

I.want.iOS.7.NOW!!!!

Zip your pants back up bigboy
2

@Chopper3 why ?

@Iain because FLASHLIGHT is why!

@Iain Because it's new and shiny and he uses iOS.

7:12 PM
wait until you see it - actually you already have, bits of it have been nicked from Windows Mobile 8
@ScottPack essentially, yes :)

@voretaq7 what's flashlight ?

@Chopper3 I have a Mac. I know how these things work.

The most useful feature of iOS 7:
Apple is giving us a flashlight
3

@voretaq7 If that was a single line I would star it.

@ScottPack there you go.

7:14 PM
:9830296 the itunes radio thing is good, but if you get itunes match then why would you ever buy another song again?
actually it was quite nice to watch an apple keynote and know NOTHING about what was coming up for a change

@Chopper3 eh - they announced no surprises really

@voretaq7 you knew about the mac pro?

@Chopper3 not the new form factor (which harkens back to the G4 cube IMHO), but I expected it to be refreshed this year because it's been the neglected redheaded stepchild of the product line
I was hoping for an iPad Mini rev myself - that would have been a surprise

@ScottPack my best was an vermin lord... called him the rat god
something fun about being level 17, controlling a level X sorcerer
X being however many rats you feel like having around... for shits and giggles X was 200

I don't like dealing with that many extra fiddly bits. Biggest reason I always get rid of my animal companion when I play a ranger.

7:21 PM
@ScottPack I should of never seen the Book of Vile Darkness :p

@ScottPack ! I'm surprised at you sir!
the animal companion is a ranger's most valuable asset!

@MattBear I had some fun with Libris Mortis when that happened.

(When you run out of rations halfway through the dungeon you can eat it)

@voretaq7 Wrong. Full base attack and Entangle are the ranger's most valuable assets!

@ScottPack You can't eat either of those!

7:22 PM
Halfling rogue. It's not even cannibalism!

Hivemind is just... fun :p

it's a halfling!
That's barely a snack!

- Start with your own Cha score.
- Add as many beetles, centipedes, etc. as you can. Past 150 vermin, each additional 50 gives your Hivemind (controlled by and surrounding you) +1 Int and Cha. (e.g. 900 centipedes = +15 Cha.) There is no limit on how many critters you can add to the hivemind, so long as no vermin is more than 10 feet away from another vermin. (Easy to do with bugs, as they are Diminutive.) You can also use rats or other small animals if you are so inclined.
- Once you are at 18 Cha or more (which you may even have already reached before the Vermin Lord capstone), every poin

You need some more cheese on that.

@voretaq7 I had a cube and upgraded it to within an inch of its life, loved it

7:27 PM
Hi all

@Chopper3 I still have a cube. It still works.

@voretaq7 cool

I would put a 1GHz processor card in it except I like the fact that it needs no fan.
I'd like to get an SSD for it so it can be completely silent though

I stealthily pulled Pun-Pun out on an unsuspecting DM once... was funny

7:29 PM
@MattBear I'm really not fond of all that systematic boosting to the point of absurdity.

@Jacob yes, that
I wish the new Mac Pro had a "Push the handle and lift the system out" approach
that would make it awesome

@voretaq7 I upgraded the processor, can't remember the name of the company that did them but they were very good, PATA disk interface so you're a bit stuck for SSDs - could use a bridge

@voretaq7 You know what would make the Mac Pro even more awesome? An I/O scheduler that didn't SUCK.

@ChrisS on that one, DM just has to be smart... you start running into enemies that use a lot of AOE's...

@Jacob yeah, the new mac pro has stolen a few design features from it

7:30 PM
@Chopper3 yeah I'd have to use a bridge (or find a SATA card I can drop into the lone expansion slot)

@MichaelHampton hahaha

@MichaelHampton Indeed.
But I can install FreeBSD on it :-)

you might have 10,000 rats, but a cone of cold can still kill half of em in one shot

FreeBSD ALL THE THINGS

For the price, I think I'd rather buy an HP or something.

7:31 PM
@MattBear ! Now I'm disappointed in YOU!

@MattBear Regardless - I don't care for rulesets that allow self-sustaining loops like that.

You use FIRE to kill the rats. They taste horrible frozen.

@voretaq7 All that burnt hair is going to smell wonderful.

@voretaq7 the characters standard attack/catch phrase was "I throw a rat at it"

I need a DVR/HPTC suggestions? Tivo seems like a meh choice

7:33 PM
@Jacob Ultra simple: Windows MCE (yes really). Linuxy: XBMC (on whatever platform, I use R-Pi, but it's an unpolished/unfinished solution that I wouldn't push on non-techies, other than my wife). TV Tuner for both (also PCs, iPads, etc): HDHR

@ChrisS I was thinking MCE, know a good TV card?
It's what I'm going to use at Uni

@ChrisS If you're really hungry you'll eat it!

I've got a HDHR v1 (2 tuner) and a HDHR3-CC (3 tuners, cable card)

(right before we roast your little ranger critter)

@ChrisS I love XBMC

7:36 PM
So, if a Supermicro server is $4700 and the HP equivalent is $6000... Is that a justifiable difference?

@ChrisS I mean, this is for my dorm so it appears a PCI would suffice? but those look interestiing

I particularly like XBMC's somewhat simple design, that even I can hack at the files and get it to do simple customizations.

@ewwhite Yes, HP won't die on you, and you can get support for them faster/easier.

imgur.com/gallery/9hWtNEk so i had to try so hard not to burst out laughing in th eoffice

I'm having a hard time getting my salespeople on board.

7:37 PM
hiya

@Jacob I've heard the Ceton InfiniTV works well, but haven't used it myself and don't know anyone directly who does.

@KevinSoviero @ChrisS what version you guys use (at home 2:12.0~git20130127.fb595f2-1)

@dawud I'm using the Ubuntu PPA... 12.2 I believe.

@ChrisS as long as your all having fun, who cares?

@dawud No idea - I'm running RaspBMC, it auto-upgrades now and then...

7:39 PM
@ChrisS I can grab old PCs from my Dad's office, and I like MCE I just need to get a card and a remote.

apple.com/mac-pro <-- @Chopper3 they're using an upflow fan?

MCE can get the channel lists right?

@voretaq7 yeah...

@ChrisS Shouldn't that be RasPMC (Raspberry Pi Media Center)?

@MattBear True - I just haven't had much fun with systems like that.. Along the lines of why I hate 4e (it has so many rules, exceptions, exceptions to the exceptions, etc)

7:39 PM
I mean I get it, hot air naturally rises so they're taking advantage of that, but basically it's a giant vacuum cleaner that's gonna suck up every bit of hair and dust bunny on earth

@KevinSoviero I didn't name it... raspbmc.com

@voretaq7 I WANT. Is the pricing like it was with the tower style?

@ChrisS then you havent played with the right people... rules are just guidelines anyway

@Jacob I assume it will still cost a testicle.

Any bostonians here who want to be puppetmasters?

7:41 PM
@MattBear See, this is what I was afraid of. @ChrisS came in hating on anything newer than Tunnels and Trolls.

@ChrisS Geeks suck at marketing.
2

@KevinSoviero word.

someone wants to be a dick... they find out Turrasque's DO in fact run in packs

@KevinSoviero we're REALLY BAD at naming things

@MattBear Not in DND 4e, I don't know a single person who plays it and would let anyone break a rule - no house rules....

7:42 PM
kicks personal server Stop throwing compile errors you miserable pile of puke!

@voretaq7 there's 2 fundamental problems in computing: naming, caching and off-by-one errors.
3

@ScottPack I've never played PathFinder - I'm interested - But also skeptical
Most of the systems I've seen where the PCs are essentially mortal demi-gods bore me

@ChrisS then find different people to play with... if its not fun, then dont play, if a rules making it not fun... DM = God, if the lack of a rule makes it no fun, DM = God

@MattBear You've played 4e?

@ChrisS yeah, a little
I like 3.5 better

7:44 PM
I wish I could just take my 4U rack with servers, but if I get a roomate they might be unhappy

@ChrisS @MattBear This is why I generally prefer the white wolf systems (where they explicitly tell you to throw the rules out if they're in the way)

@MattBear What did you think of 3e or 2e?

or D20 modern

@ChrisS I like 2e myself

@voretaq7 Same here, CnC spells that out clearly (based on 2e too)

7:45 PM
@ChrisS never played 2e, kinda before my time

@MattBear you're not that young. >=[

@Jacob Larger servers, like 4U, are generally quieter because there's more room for larger fans, and larger fans are usually quieter. The 1U server will make your ears bleed.

@ChrisS ...or are we that old? :'(

@KevinSoviero Bro, I've kept 1us in my room for years :)

@ChrisS have you played any of the new world of darkness stuff? They actually managed to make the system suck (slightly) less
(and there's apparently a new supplement out with refinements that cure some of the lingering suck)

7:47 PM
@Jacob you're nuts

You will have hearing problems.

@DennisKaarsemaker NO it's not that bad
I tested it

@voretaq7 I struggle to find enough people to play anything at all (IRL).

@Jacob Me too, right up until I decided to take a hammer to them one morning! (Either that or I p2v'd them... One of the two.)

you'll notice it when your high frequency hearing starts to go.

7:47 PM
@ChrisS 2e came out in... 89?

@ChrisS yeah. I'm working on a setting book for WoD and finding 5 people to run playtests with is damn near impossible.

@MattBear Sounds about right =]

I was 4

@MattBear yeah, that's about when I started playing...
@MattBear I hate you.

@voretaq7 I don't keep them in there anymore

7:48 PM
@MattBear NO EXCUSES!

@KevinSoviero THUNK THUNK THUNK THUNK
:)

@ChrisS my parents though it would drive me to worship satan!!

@MattBear At least that would keep you from joining a gang or something =}

Software upgrade...

@ChrisS I like to play now and then, but I have this new game... called RL, that takes up all my time now

7:51 PM
I'm sure my parents weren't thrilled by the game - particularly since DND was the "Violent Video Game" of Gen-X

it sucks, and I cant figure out how to quit playing
:p

@MattBear When you do play, it's typically PathFinder?

@ChrisS yeah, lately
its been... a year I think since i last played
and a couple years since I played regularly

For all the Mac Pro's new technology, I'm surprised it only has dual 1GbE.
It seems oddly slow/old compared to everything else.

Have you priced 10GbE lately?
Macs are already expensive, but that would just make it outrageous.

7:54 PM
@ChrisS It's best described as DnD 3.75. Some of the rules were tweaked and the power level tends to be about 20% higher when compared directly with 3.x.

shoulda used rsync... ftp is so slow

@ChrisS How does MCE pull guides? Is it likely I can get it for a backwoods provider?

@ScottPack Interesting - I'll have to find a primer or something on the net.
@Jacob It has it's own program for pulling guide information. No idea where it comes from, but I'll bet it's TMS (same as everyone else)

Ok

It's 2013, who the fuck is still using VMS?

@MichaelHampton too many people.

@ChrisS They've open licensed the rules. d20pfsrd.com

As the DM, I am more powerful then any real-wold god, as in D&D, NPCs don't have free-will

8:13 PM

@ChrisS You got migrated to Windows NT?(No Testicles)

@ChrisS awww, now I feel bad

@ChrisS If you're familiar with 3.x it's a very easy transition. The biggest rules change was rolling all kinds of combat extras (like disarm, sunder, grapple) into a single unified system that's not insane and they reworked each class so there aren't any dead levels.

6 hours ago, by Iain
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/06/10/openvms_death_notice/

@Iain No fair. Timezones.

@WesleyDavid :)

Even better:

@ScottPack Sounds familiar, CnC has a single unified system for all "attacks".. I'll have to check it out tonight.

Ah, my favorite hobby: Quoting RFC chapter and verse.

The Requests for Comments, Book 1918, Chapter 3, Verse 8:
Thou shalt not propagate thy private addresses on the global internet, for that is sin.

8:26 PM
@voretaq7 Thou shalt read the RFCs before asking basic networking questions.

@ChrisS If you don't like the demi-god PC thing, then you might not like it too much. As I said, the power levels are even a little higher than 3rdEd.

@MichaelHampton That's from The Book of Internets, Chapter 2 (The adoration of the most blessed standards)

@MichaelHampton I usually abbreviate that to RTFM.

I submit for your consideration...

8:36 PM
damnit, all these apple events have killed HN

It's going to be five or six years before I get any upvotes on that.

that deserves oneboxing @dawud

which happens to be how i spend most of my time at work :(

@MichaelHampton upvoted just to prove you wrong :P

@David But that's impossible! It's hosted in my butt!

8:40 PM
@WesleyDavid pardon me?

@DennisKaarsemaker Beat me to it.

that is not HN

@WesleyDavid for a second I thought I forgot to disable the extension. But you just have a butt fetish :)

I had a giggly few moment thinking about @David ponder the possibility of a butt-plug-server.

8:42 PM
@WesleyDavid wat
i didnt even click, im so lost

@David Stay that way.

A Firefox extension that replaces occurrences of "the cloud" with "my butt".

Ohhh... I was wondering why the Comms Room was on a butt joke kick.

@MichaelHampton A Firefox extension that replaces occurrences of "my butt" with "my butt".

@Tanner Because we're all sick.

8:43 PM
@MichaelHampton It's better than dog balls... ?

@WesleyDavid Your butt is better than dog balls? OK, if you say so...

@Tanner the comms room is always on a butt joke kick. And a your mom joke kick. And a your momms butt joke kick.

@MichaelHampton No, my butt is better than dog balls.
@DennisKaarsemaker Your mama's butt's boobs' dog balls.
...aaaaaand I'm 12 years old.
Actually, 12 year old me would probably look at 30 year old me and think "I should kill myself."
5

in cat years?

8:45 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker My cat is almost 100 in human years.

I've been missing out on butt jokes!!>?!?!??!?
damn it

@MattBear POOOOOOOOOOOP
2

@WesleyDavid that dog can fit almost as many balls in its mouth as your mom

@MattBear You saw that movie too, huh? =(

@WesleyDavid yeah... gave me nightmares
was that a horse?

8:48 PM
@MattBear Llama.

@WesleyDavid that explains the spitting

LLAMA LLAMA LLAMA DUCK!!

@WesleyDavid would 12 year old you like a popsicle? I have a freezer full of them down in my basement ;)

@MattBear OKEEE!

8:52 PM
@MattBear you're a catholic priest now?

hello (again) IPv6

@DennisKaarsemaker well yeah, I like wearing the dress

@MattBear Cassock

@Iain EHLO?

@voretaq7 Nah, on preparation for changing ISPs I found some info on getting SixXS AYIYA/AICCU working on the latest 2.1 Pfsense (my new dynamic IP address won't be as stable as the one I currently have. when I got it working it was remarkably unstable and I got temporarily banned from their tic server. In the mean time I switched everything over to my he.net tunnel which is now faster than the SixXS one anyway

9:07 PM
@ChrisS the PC i've got lined up for WMC is a Athlon II 260 with 4GB of RAM and 500GB hdd. Think the CPU will be good enough?

and Pfsense 2.1 has built in support for dynamic IP addresses and he.net tunnels too

@Jacob Yeah, should handle at least 2-3 streams at once.

@Iain no diamond?
What is happening?
@ChrisS Awesome, Hauppauge has a solid card for around 100$

so, not sure if i missed any discussion, but what'd you guys think of iOS 7?

@David MY BATTERY LIFE!

9:18 PM
@David I'm excited for it

@voretaq7 im wondering how they'll address that too
lots of animations and shit that'll rape it
the constant 3d-effect
BatteryGate 2.0 incoming? @voretaq7

Question: What type of naming convention to you guys use to separate your standard account to your privileged account?

@Jacob the privileged account is called root.

@DennisKaarsemaker on Windows please
:)

@Jacob deltree /y C:\*.*

9:31 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Look, I have to support Windows at my day job :)

or however you spell rm -fr

@DennisKaarsemaker rm -rf :P

@Jacob -fr doesn't trigger the annoying easter egg

@DennisKaarsemaker Ich weiss aber Ich mag das Ei.

und warum sprechen Sie ploetzich Deutsch?

9:34 PM
Okay... HP SSDs are WAY too expensive.

@ewwhite it's HP, you didn't seriously expect anything else now, did you?

@David meh
the original batterygate was a Real Problem
this shouldn't be as long as people don't have their displays powered up all the time

@DennisKaarsemaker Ich weiss nicht? It seemed like a good idea

My finger was close to the "close button" then I backed away...then I inched closer...then I backed away...(and now we are cha-cha-ing)

Q: Find IP of network drive/computer behind firewall

OfeargallIn our office we are using a Mac Mini with an external drive as our file server. I recently set up a firewall and switch to accommodate our growing number of machines needing access to the internet and network. Prior to installing the switch and firewall I could log in to the fileserver from out...

@Jacob german is never a good idea.

9:40 PM
@TheCleaner "In the help wanted pages for a sysadmin."

@Jacob Once place I was at the used firstname.surname as your normal account and fladmin as your administrator account

lol

So mine were mark.henderson and mhadmin

true

@MarkHenderson I like that idea, thanks

9:45 PM
@TheCleaner That would be a big ol' "Close with extreme prejudice."

@voretaq7 how will they be able to help themselves though? its so pretty

@TheCleaner You just caused me to canonize an SPF record question, I hope you're proud of yourself.
(and everyone should go upvote stuff there and give away free rep :-P)

I've got a really long drive to get to school :( maps.google.com/…

@WesleyDavid Should we have a canonical Q: "I'm not a systems admin, and I've done something that confused me and possibly broke shit. What do I do next?" A: Hire someone.
2

@voretaq7 Please Pin the above message

10:00 PM
@mfinni Q: "I've made a terrible mistake." A: "Hire me."
@mfinni Only if that someone is me. =P

@WesleyDavid More often than not, I wouldn't want the job.

@mfinni @Jacob That would be a topic to raise on Meta
and FWIW it probably shouldn't be a question but rather a specific page in /helpcenter

@voretaq7 Ain't NO ONE GOT TIME FOR THAT

@voretaq7 True. More of a shoot-the-shit type of suggestion.

@Jacob shut up and use your inhaler :)

10:03 PM
I hate cable internet

@Jacob Boo fucking hoo

@MarkHenderson YA KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY MARK? I'm going to university literally in the middle of nowhere and it has better internet than Australia.

@Jacob what school did you pick?

@Jacob TomTom's phone has better internet than Australia.

@Jacob Bumfuck U? ... no wait that's the bursar's office at every university...

10:06 PM
@voretaq7 West Virginia Tech

@DennisKaarsemaker TomTom's fone is powered by a core of pure AWESOME.
@Jacob pfft, that's not the middle of nowhere.

@voretaq7 we're talking about the same place right?

@Jacob There's universities that are more "middle of nowhere" than that.

@freiheit That's true, but that wasn't the point. :) If you want an example lookup Ferrum college.

you have an Amtrak station.
Not the middle of nowhere.

10:09 PM
IT WAS JOKE, COMRADE

The middle of nowhere is SRS BZNZ!
We got Australians in this chat - they know "Middle of Nowhere"!

Oh Shit, I think I just locked myself out

@ChrisWarcraft @rob_t_firefly This Fall: World of Spycraft - a MMORPG in which you analyze SIGINT for the NSA. #CroudSourced #MechanicalTurk

@voretaq7 incorrect permissions

@Jacob that'll learn ya to type more carefully.

@DennisKaarsemaker well, I expected better options.

@Jacob Didn't your parents teach you not to make fun of cripples?

Freaks!

10:50 PM
@TomO'Connor Oh HAI. Congrats on the blueness
@MarkHenderson Don't make me come over there to kick your ass.
