Gentoo... pssh
hacks

12:41 AM
@Cole Doesn't much suck here. Just make sure you some good meds for the winter. Depression is a right bitch in the winter here. We go weeks without seeing the sun at all.
Especially if you like the outdoors.
It's bloody amazing.

@Adrian The wellbutrin works well for it
Just seems more up my alley

@Cole Nice. I should probably talk to my doc about that. I get pretty far down the sine wave in the winters too. Enjoying the outdoors here is a really good thing too. Take up hiking or snowshoeing or kayaking or canoeing.

@Adrian yeah Wellbutrin is great
my friends actually moved to Seattle last week

1:06 AM
@Cole Nice. We're having the best summer here in about 8 years. the last 4-5 have been hit & miss with the weather.
It's on about a 20-30 year nice/crappy weather summer cycle here. Something to do with the northern pacific ocean.
Coming up out of the bottom of the crappy weather end of that curve, I guess.
You drink beer, right?

Yus

The beers here are amazing. Some of the best in the world, and breweries per-capita is probably 2nd only to Portland, Oregon. There's a lot more jobs here in Seattle than Portland, and Portland's IT mix is tipped far more towards Linux than Windows.

Seems like I can make what I make here, and it's cheaper CoL

I think there's like 800 brew-pubs in Portland. Many of which don't go any farther than the front taproom of the establishment
Yeah, Boston's heinous for that.

damn!

1:11 AM
I'm always good for advice on where to live based on where you work.

I'm curious if it's worth living IN Seattle or outside

Oh, definitely live in. You just need to understand that living in a smaller square footage is a good thing.
Living outside Seattle gets out into serious Redneck territory.

My current apartment is ~380 sq ft
so

yes, living in an apartment around that size I must say it is definitely not a good thing when taken to extremes.

@Cole Yeah, that's good. It's just a matter of what neighborhood. I paid $850 for a 360sq ft studio.

1:13 AM
$725 for my 1br

I was in the "blue collar" part of West Seattle called Gatewood.
And frankly there's limited reason to own a car in this town. Get a scooter and get used to public transit.
Especially if you find a place near a grocery store and a little central neighborhood.

MA has awesome public transit

yeah, ours could use some improvement, but they're slowly working on that too.

How's Northwest Seattle?

Expensive and takes hours to get to the city.
Fremont, Ballard, Wallingford, and Queen Anne are very trendy now though.

yeah, that's got a bit of a commute and it's probably expensive due to proximity to the University of Washington.
Fremont and Ballard are a little more expensive, but are closer to the tech companies like Google and Adobe.

Not sure I'd like to live directly in the city though, I live in the suburbs here for a reason
but I don't know how Seattle compares to Boston as far as cities go. Bostons is crowded and noisy

@Cole Seattle, aside from Downtown & Capitol Hill, is really sedate. We're not talking East Coast cities here.

Yeah I think I'm forgetting that
Even downtown Denver when I went to CO wasn't like Boston

North Seattle above 85th is effectively a very quiet almost creepy suburban area.

1:18 AM
What Adrian said. When I lived on First Hill I was in spitting distance of downtown but it was still quiet.

@MichaelHampton you lived in WA?

@MichaelHampton I didn't know you lived up there. What part of the Hill?

For a couple of months.
Um...I'd have to dig out a map to figure that out again.
It was back in 1998 or so

Are you originally from New England?

Ah. That was after I moved here but before I started working downtown.

1:19 AM
Ha, no, "parts unknown" :)

@MichaelHampton In 1998 I was building the shit out of some legos

@JoelESalas Fsck. In 1998 I'd been married for a year. =(

@Cole From and made of parts unknown

heh, I was in town in part to visit Microsoft and decide if I wanted to work there. Did get a couple of free cans of Coke though...

I was starting to go through puberty in 1998.

1:21 AM
@MichaelHampton Yeah, MS is not a great company to work for. Of course, in 98 there weren't necessarily the awesome hi-tech ecosystem we have now.

I think I just need to be in a more lax place

@Adrian It wasn't bad in 1998, from what I could tell. It didn't really start to go off the rails until Ballmer took over for Bill.

First Hill doesn't seem too $$

@MichaelHampton Yeah, makes sense. Stack Ranking put the stake in the heart of that place. The asshat PMs took over and it's been a festering boil ever since.
@Cole First Hill is gentrifying. So it's not ghetto anymore, but it's close to down and the Cap Hill social scene.

Ah
I'd prefer to be somewhere relatively safe. I'm a small guy

1:23 AM
Oh, and required study for living in Seattle:
Posse's in Broadway....

haha

MixALot lives down in Auburn where my kids live with their mother.

@Adrian I still don't remember exactly where I was then, but I do remember being a minute or two walk from the McDonald's and Starbucks right between the two hospitals.

@MichaelHampton Heh. There's like 8 hospitals up here now. And you can't walk 3 blocks without seeing a Starbucks now. =)

haha
I don't know if any of you have dealt/deal with depression...but it's like I've been super depressed the past 3-4+ weeks

1:27 AM
@Adrian Behind the Swedish hospital.
Does that make any sense?

And luckily, today is the day I woke up totally fine. Depression is weird.

@MichaelHampton Oh, yeah. that one. I don't over there much, but I've walked through there on the way from First Hill to Pioneer Square.
@Cole Amen to that. Lady's sister has been up and down since her rough spot last autumn.

Of course it's been 15 years..

Later gents. Gotta go grocery shopping with the Lady.

I've been super up and down, but the past 3-4 weeks have been REALLY bad.
@Adrian later!

1:29 AM
@Cole You know how to reach me offline?

@Adrian negatory
got it
thx :)

No problem. It's a kickass town in a lot of ways. First two things you need to know: The Stranger newspaper and KEXP 90.3 (kexp.org). That'll get you started. =)

Sweet - think I'll be coming out to visit in the next few months - make sure I like it.

Awesome. Let me know. Show you some of the highlights. =)

1:45 AM
@Adrian No way! KZOK
Or maybe you need to be an old guy to appreciate them...
I was impressed when I heard Danny Partridge dishing out advice in the morning.

2:41 AM
@ward KZOK has been playing the same old stuff for decades. I prefer something a little newer than the 70s.

3:00 AM
@Adrian Yeah, but I like that stuff, don't hear much 60s 70s up here.

Q: Weird packet dropping between two routers

RioMy ISP provided me a hybrid DSL modem/router with a phone jack and 4 LAN ports. The DSL modem/router supports PPPoE passthrough, but it does not do PPPoE dialing. I also have a more powerful DD-WRT router with a WAN port and 4 LAN ports. The WAN port of the DD-WRT router is connected to a LAN por...

Q: iscsi or sas ? Which is better

RimmI'm looking at ordering a storage unit with 24 sas drives, dual controllers, power supplies. The controllers come in either iscsi or sas. I am not sure which is the better way to go. Has anyone had any experience with sas?

How can someone be so hopelessly confused?

@MichaelHampton HP P2000 G3 is available in SAS or iSCSI... many people choose the wrong one

@ewwhite I think I'm going to leave this question to you, then.

@MichaelHampton more detail is needed

I figured as much.

4:24 AM
Produce client today was salty because their software conversion took so long today. 1GbE iSCSI SAN.
poor sequential performance

They should yell at the software vendor.

meh, the SW vendor can't hang.

4:36 AM
Better question is who implements an iSCSI SAN with only one connection.
Mine's got 4, I can pull 320MB+ if I cherry pick the test parameters.
@Cole CoD: Ghosts is being developed by the new "Infinity Ward". It's not the same people/company that developed all the old CoD games and MW series (even MW3 was started by old IW, and finished by new IW with help from TA). I don't have high hopes for Ghosts being anything more than MW2 on PS4/XBO (MW3 was so little more than MW2 - the story was terribly short, game play essentially identical, a real letdown overall).

@ChrisS it's MPIO with 2 x links per server... but it still slow.

1x GbE iSCSI? Lol, were the disks attached by SATA to desktop boards, connected on a gigabit lan with other equipment, running openfiler?

5:09 AM
:(

6:59 AM
Yay, one layer of NAT successfully removed from the home network. Gawd, what a pain.

o0
how many layers do you have?

Now? Only one layer of NAT at the edge.

Morning

7:15 AM
Morning all, ahh too early for a Monday!
damn iscsi or sas! that must be a record holder!

my second week back - although I did almost nothing last week; sorted 8 months of emails and let my work laptop get itself up to date, IM'ed with a lot of people who saw me pop up, spoke to the sports team and two vendors - that was about it, might have to do better this week :)
@MichaelHampton just go 100% v6 and get rid of nat altogether - you're fucked for some sites but still...

morning

@Chopper3 I'd have to run some sort of v6-v4 gateway... on a bloody Netgear home router!

@MichaelHampton nah - dump v4 entirely :)

@Chopper3 You first!

7:27 AM
XD

erm... ok :)

Ha. Now my gf can print straight to my printer instead of bothering me all the time to print something. :)

@MichaelHampton Progress.

And XDMCP works...which was the real reason I did it ;)

I'm 8 minutes into my day and a teacher has just come up with her staff laptop infected with scareware \o/

8:07 AM
Morning all.
@tombull89 I come in to an email "I can't my mail on my phone. Here's my username and password". Not even 10-past and we already want to punch things.

morning dan

Dan
@Chopper3 Sounds productive to me!

8:17 AM
@Dan really?

Dan
@Chopper3 Well, 8 months of e-mail sounds like a long task!

@Dan nah - 5-10 second scan and move for 90%+ of them

Dan
@Chopper3 Fair enough!

@Dan I have some outlook rules that dealt with a lot of them along the way, I probably normally do about 225/day before rules, probably about 80/day that need some degree of work - some of which I'd dealt with as I went, I think I had something like 6k in my inbox, so it took a couple of days, in total there were about 30 that I need/ed to deal with as a lot had kind of timed-out in terms of my input

Dan
Jesus - I had a really busy Friday last week and had <30 e-mails!
On Wednesday I had the grand total of 12, and 3 of those were my other half, one was a bounce-back and I had a couple of automated things e-mail me

8:25 AM
@Dan First thing I do is tell new staff when they join that if they're sending me an email that they want me to keep but that I can ignore then they have to put '---' in the subject title and if they want me to respond to them to put a '+++' instead - this helps a LOT

@Chopper3 also starting the subject with /// if all info is in the subject line so that you don't need to open the email. E.g. "/// coming in late due to traffic".

Dan
Those are pretty cool ideas

that's good

@Chopper3 I once spent half a day at a productivity seminar. That's the only thing I can remember that was actually useful.
I think by now it's been useful enough to be worth the other 3.99 wasted hours.

Dan
8:43 AM
My old place used to love sending us on Soft-Skills courses before the recession
To be honest, I loved them because it was a free night away (I was still living at home), a couple of days off work and I even occasionally got to sleep with a co-worker. What more do you want from a training course, eh?

@Dan I just realised that I will get back the "sleeping with a coworker when on conferences" perk now that I change jobs.

Am I the only person here who never slept with a coworker?

Dan
@JennyD Achievement Unlocked!

@MichaelHampton nope.avi

Dan
@MichaelHampton I doubt it, but you're missing out!

8:47 AM
@Dan actually it was unlocked about 13 years ago, but apart from that...

Dan
@JennyD Haha

@Dan I was the one who got him to start working at the ISP where I worked, then we spent about 3 months at desks right next to one another. Then we moved in together.

@Dan any of them disappointed to find out that you're not Chloe?

Dan
@JennyD Aw :)
@SmallClanger Yeah, he was really upset when he found out it wasn't my finger

9:03 AM
Mum's just forwarded me a GroupOn offer for a 96% discount on a CCNA.

Groupon in general seems sketchy to me.

Dan
Seen similar -it's usually shitty web based training
It's probably barely worth £99 let alone the joke £2700. It doesn't include the exam or any practical training
Your money would be far better spent on Jeremy Cioras videos from CBT Nuggets. A couple of cheap old 2950's, and a copy of packet tracer will get you 90%+ of the way there.

If you're feeling a bit adventurous then find a real router or have a play with GNS3. It's faffy, but I've had GNS3 doing routing for real switches which is kind of fun

hello world ^^/

Is there anything as irritating as a customer who constantly badgers you while you're looking at an issue (I'm talking e-mails every 20-30 mins) and then never ever gets back to you when you fix it and ask for confirmation
Actually yes, people who order a product, it arrives damaged for whatever reasons so they go and rate it 1* on a website.

@Dan I can't help noticing that both of those can be reduced to "customer" without any loss of information.

Dan
@JennyD sigh Story of our life, right?

10:09 AM
@Dan Yep

10:42 AM

@tombull89 yar.

@SmallClanger From a company's POV, it's a very expensive DDoS attack.

@chopper3 wassup?

@ewwhite one sec, phone call :(

Hmm, posting an answer and then downvoting the OP.
Not my most common technique. :)

@Hennes I've occasionally downvoted questions I've answered.

12:00 PM
Same here.
Hiss, but downvoting my bountied question was a bitch move!!

@ewwhite Sorry, here goes; while away a minion's bought 4 x dl380p (the 25 disk job) for a remote'ish site, usual maxed out hardware etc. running esxi 5.1 over dual 10Gbps NICs into a pair of nexus 5k's. Problem is he's not bought any fluffing storage, thinking we could just use the vmw VSA thing
@ewwhite now I've played with it, even sat with a vmw guy doing an eval on it, but this was about a year ago - I'm looking for some 'gotcha's for it - I know you can't run a VC VM on it and that you can't go from a 2-node cluster to a 3-node (there'll be 3-way on day one if I don't pull the plug), but what's going to bite us

I don't trust the VSA. It doesn't get much press either. I should tear it apart, though. It's surely Linux + DRBD-like replication. There are a lot of restrictions in use and design.
How many active hosts do you need? I'd be more inclined to use a left hand license or convert one box into dedicated storage.

Camera systems don't work so well when the host machine is frozen...
sigh

@ewwhite My thoughts exactly - just don't really want to come back from 8 months off and rip the shit out of a guy that's actually done a good job of holding people away from me for that time - if you know what I mean, and yes I don't make a habit out of being nice to people :)
@ewwhite That's a good idea, I'll have a think, we need resilience though

The VMware appliance seems complex. I fear that it doesn't get the development attention it needs.
Enterprise plus license, right? Where's the vCenter?

Dan
12:15 PM
@ewwhite Do you mean store virtual? </nosy>

?

Dan
@ewwhite P4000 VSA

@chopper3 there are some weird limitations. Needs to be fresh install, no memory overcommitting allowed.

@ewwhite Ent+ as usual - the VC won't be local
@ewwhite hmmm

The memory overcommit restriction is to prevent eventual swapping.

12:20 PM
@ewwhite Do wish they'd just bought a little 3Par or similar (P6350 even)

and.. I'm back.

As much as I'd love to ZFS everything...
You need ha, right? A $10k P2000 is easy to add
Get the SAS one if there aren't any expansion plans.

@Chopper3 Is it too late to just order one?

@ewwhite we use 2k's for our labs

A: simulating a 5 - 10 person network to practice sysadmin

Krzysztof KsiężykSure, VirtualBox is a good point to start. Of course you can mix Windows and Linux servers. Sometimes it's only solution.

D:

12:24 PM
@TomO'Connor we can do it but I don't want to do anything to delay 'sports' (you'll know what I mean and probably where this 'branch' is)

@Chopper3 Mmm.

@tombull89 I love your new icon

XD
It's difficult to practice effectively on a testbed network, as you'll never be able to simulate real user's ineptitude. — Tom O'Connor 2 hours ago
Made me laugh out loud.
Sold some older computer hardware for $100.

Sup guys? does SE have a section for video editing or legal advice?

@Chopper3 Iain said it would be nice to have a pink and fluffy Comms Room.

12:28 PM
@Cole :)

@tombull89 I know, I just love the icon

I'm creating a marketing video for my app and I need to know if the default Windows Music folder music is copyrighted or not?

12:28 PM
oh, legal advice? Don't think you'll find that on SE.

@JoelMurphy I've done a LOT of video editing training if I can help

@JoelMurphy If it's from Windows, yes it is.

pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows

Oh awesome, cheers guys! So it's definitely okay to use the default music (around 20 seconds of it) included with windows in a commercial project? I just don't want to get into any trouble, that's all :p

12:34 PM
HTC and Samsung engaged in a little Twitter spat this weekend which rapidly turned nasty, while LG happily poked the warring giants with a pointy stick.

Apple WWDC launch later, plus E3 stuff too, we'll get to see just how ugly the PS4 is

@Chopper3 and BF4 multiplayer stream. Hopefully we'll see some of Bungie's Destiny as well.

yeah. can't wait to see what Apple has to say

@tombull89 destiny is what I'm looking forward to as well, obviously it's BF4 I'll actually be playing to death but destiny looks very interesting

@Chopper3 So what you gonna do? Tear his asshole open?

12:41 PM
@Mike they've had no new products for AGES
@ewwhite nah, need to be a bit gentler with him, he's earned a bit of respect

@Chopper3 I'm still in two minds about BF4, of course it depends on if my graphics card in my PC can handle it well.

@Chopper3 "Yo dude... you forgot storage. Make it right."

@tombull89 I pre-ordered it - oh and that's why I'm building a new PC just for that
@ewwhite a bit like that, "you fucked up, next time I'll make sure you lose your house and family, now let me spend my way out of this"

I'd also like to see Avalanche reveal Just Cause 3. Graphics and map of JC2, with the shop mechanics of Mercinaries 2 and destructability of BF3 and Mercinaries 2.
@Chopper3 Is there any specs for BF4 at the moment?

@Chopper3 But that VMware VSA looks like a trap

12:44 PM
never played that
@ewwhite it does

@TomO'Connor haha yeah, it was about spicy food.

@Chopper3 It's often on sale on Steam, the plot and voice acting is awful, but if you add a couple of mods to it it's abosultely brilliant. The fanmade multiplayer mod is making good progress and there is likely to run a beta soon, which is always bonkers.

@Cole Not about bumsex. :(

Solarwinds Log and Event Manager - you suck so hard.
It's flash based, of course.
So it breaks basically every damn day.

@Cole You've cussed Solarwinds at least 3 times lately...
