("mild load" by me is a web browser, a virtual machine, a few terminals, and then do something like dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/shitpile bs=1M count=10000 to make it collapse under its bad I/O handling)

actually you don't always get the beachball

and if you have SSDs or something blazingly fast underlying the disk subsystem it's not totally blowful

but yeah OS X is terrible

@MikeyB not really (you might get a few less logjams, but anything that hits the disk will still choke)
