3:00 PM
@NathanC yeah and all she talks about is LGBT stuff and TV shows/Movies. That's it.

I got dumped for being too snarky once. The one before, I have NO idea what any of it was about ;p

oh, and how much work sucks.

/me thinks the traditional alternative sounds appealing

@Travis No, but all women have maintenance... I like to compare it to MTG, the upkeep phase of your round.

@ChrisS Yep

3:00 PM
I mean I'm all for the LGBT community, but shit, I don't need to talk about it 24/7. I don't identify as trans - I'm just a dude.

@JourneymanGeek I was talking to this girl for like two weeks, she says randomly one night "you won't want to be friends with me" and disappears. haven't heard from her since.

@ChrisS But think of the fun when you unleash a 12/12 trample on your next phase!

@Travis Oh myy

I feel kind of bad, I snapped at her at breakfast yesterday about the LGBT stuff.

@Cole Maybe she is insecure around you? No lie, if I met you in person I'd probably talk about that kind of thing 24/7 to due to my lack of understanding and ignorance

3:02 PM
@Travis she had been dating women previously to me.

@Travis I played with Angles and soldiers who either has flying or banding. =]

She's been apart of the LGBT community for years. She's pansexual.

Q: Beginner to Servers and Storage

Resfap SeragI am a student on an internship and I have had my past internships as a programmer. I decided to do this internship in Servers and Storage so that I can learn a lot as I have never worked in such a department before. We have all sorts of VMs and physical servers in the room. I don't have a clue a...

@Travis also if you did I'd be like STFU dude. Lets talk about boobs, beer and tech stuff.

@Cole: lots of my friends are alphabet-soup types

3:02 PM
@ChrisS :) I played a little bit in HS but wasn't any good. Just for something to do. Got a bunch of cards I'm trying to sell all the way back to Tempest through Urza's Saga
@Cole lol

and ya, this happens a lot, especially with the younger ones

@Cole Do you really want to date yourself that badly? Would get rather boring pretty quickly.

@JourneymanGeek There's just so much more to talk about.

@TheCleaner You're a bit slow this morning... :)

@Cole Right on, haha. Although beer ...ugh. Acquired taste.

3:03 PM
@ChrisS well I mean hanging out with guy friends, that is. Not dating.
mmmmmm beer

@Cole Learn something new everyday. Never heard pansexual before

From what I gather in here, it's a good idea to stay single for as long as possible :P

Pansexual? Likes to have sex with anything, anywhere?

@JennyD do you identify as pan or bi?

@tombull89: yes and no

3:04 PM
@MichaelHampton Slow? Dang...it

@MichaelHampton No, that's a whore

Its sometimes worth taking risks

But I got an upvote... :)

but if you keep getting burnt , well ;p

@MichaelHampton negative - any gender or variation of gender. Does not include animals, objects, etc

3:04 PM
Pansexual - you love a person, gender is less important there

@TheCleaner Realistically - If you don't know sh*t about servers and storage by the time you're an intern, you're already so far behind the 8 Ball that I'd just find a different line of work... like one that interests you enough that you play with it before getting a job in the field.

which is just as well, because the only girl I've got interested in me is because I have a car and a job.

(amusingly I found that the folk who had the most nuanced way of describing relationships were asexuals)

I'm confused why they came up with pansexual. You're either hetero, homo or hemo.

People like her make me lose faith in humanity.

3:05 PM
@Travis negative.

@Travis ..hemo?

@Travis there's many variations of gender.

@tombull89 Hemosexual...like men and women

@Travis: I guess the idea is really pansexuals might end up settling with one person for life.

@ChrisS I haven't met a single intern that actually knew much about the job they interned for. They might THINK they know a few things...but they quickly realize that the real world vs. their compsci classes is totally different..

3:06 PM
Gender and sexuality is very fluid.

Since things like genderqueer blur the lines between traditionally male or female - that's kind of where pansexual comes in.

@Cole Male, female, male with female parts, female with male parts, females that used to have male parts and males that used to have female parts. Still male or female in my book. Then you go into male, female, hermaph. I don't relate to the transgendered thing. If you were a woman and now you're a man then you're a male
People just make things more comlpicated than what it is

@Travis that's your opinion and respect that, but it's not as simple as you put it.

@Travis: some people identify as non gendered, or having more than one gender identity
as well

3:07 PM
The gender binary, also referred to as gender binarism (sometimes shortened to just binarism), is the classification of sex and gender into two distinct, opposite and disconnected forms of masculine and feminine. It is one general type of a gender system. As one of the core principles of genderism, it can describe a social boundary that discourages people from crossing or mixing gender roles, or from identifying with third (or more) forms of gender expression altogether. It can also represent some of the prejudices which stigmatize intersex and transgender people, especially those that...

I guess we're talking psychological vs. physical

@Travis sex =! gender

but the psychological side is where the mindfuckery happens (no offence)

@JourneymanGeek werd.

3:08 PM
(of course, there's wierder!)

Yeah...I just choose to keep it simple. Doesn't make much difference to me what you like or don't like

I mean my brain, is typical male. I may not understand gender queer or nongender conforming but that's their thing.

@Travis: to me, unless you're female, cute, and available, your gender and sexual preferences are your own business

@TheCleaner Yeah, but I installed my first RAM at age 10, hard drive at 11. 10MbE and wrote a TCP/IP chat server at 14. Got paid for implementing Group Policy at 16... And this is an Intern 18+ who "doesn't know anything"?? That just screams "I'm not actually interested in this stuff" to me.

In the big picture, I'd like to think it really doesn't matter. If a guy (who thinks they are a woman) likes another guy...then so be it. No sense coming up with new words

Dan
3:09 PM
I try to be mega open with all this, but I will confess it's also impossible for me to relate to. I find it really confusing

Yep -^

I got quite a few friends who have non-standard gender identities so... I sorta have a vague idea about these things ;p

I guess it's a little easier for me to understand. But sometimes I still go "what the fuck!?"

@Travis: eh, most communities need their own lingos

lol

Dan
3:10 PM
@ChrisS I got us temporarily banned for opening an open mail relay back in the early days of our cable service :( And, at 11, I got a CD-ROM drive for Christmas and was so happy! I was a fucking sad child and it's a wonder I ever got a girlfriend, let alone a fiancee

If you met me on the street, you'd be like "that's a dude."

@Cole: used to know a dude who apparently randomly used to feel female. with.. phantom.. things

@Dan Same - I have no issues with other people being different from me - but I can't entirely relate.

then switch back

@JourneymanGeek gender fluid I suppose.

3:11 PM
stuff gets wierd sometimes ;p

Brains are weird man.

Dan
I also sold myself as a pro PHP dev at 14 / 15. I feel a little guilty for the first few websites I half coded for cash

@Cole: at this point tho. we're talking serious brain/neurochemical fuckery

@JourneymanGeek Maybe...but it has gotten to a point I'm sure that it is no longer about lingo. It is more about trying to stand out in the crowd. Pssshh...I'm not lesbian...I'm pansexual!

When I was in school, I was the typical ew, gay because I didn't know anyone that was gay. Since college, though, I've met a ton of lesbian, bi and gay people and I have to say they are some of the nicest guys I know.

3:11 PM
@Cole We're trying to understand ourselves by using our own thoughts to understand ourselves. ...paradox?!

@Dan Yeah, but you're probably an awesome SysAdmin now, and relationships take time... Some people literally never "find love"

@Travis: to me, the difference is "like same gender" "likes both gender" "is attracted to specific people"

@tombull89 Just people that like different things.

oh
"attracted to pans"
2

Dan
@ChrisS I do try - and I know what you mean about people who dont' do anything.

3:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek attracted to pans? Mmm sexy saucepans. I love those transparent lids. And don't get me started on frying pans.

@JourneymanGeek Once you go cast-iron you never go back.
2

I think I won't find someone until I learn to love myself, as lame as that sounds.

@tombull89 CLEAN UP ON AISLE PANTS.

Dan
@tombull89 I think most British kids go through that phase -it's sad that gay has become such a negative word, even by people who aren't homophobic. I've become weirdly sensitive to it, now, too

3:13 PM
@Cole: thats hard

@JourneymanGeek that's what she said.

Dan
@JourneymanGeek That's what she said

I had a serious depressive phase

BOOM

Dan
Fuck you, @Cole

3:13 PM
@ewwhite VSA-panic averted, ordering a P6550 instead :)

XD

@Dan same, working in a school I pick it up a lot.

(actually finding SU helped me with that. I realised I actually did know some of my shit)

Dan
@tombull89 Also, giggling at Famous Five books when they used "gay" in the original sense

@JourneymanGeek I find that every day when I come in here

3:15 PM
I used to say 'that's so gay' a lot. I've since stopped.

@Dan: XD. there was this report floating around that george was a lesbian or transgendered

@Chopper3 easy... must be nice having $$$$

Q: Does a Dell PowerEdge 1850 have a way to get Molex 4 pin power?

JamesJI have a PCI card that needs 4 pin power hooked up to it and wondering if there is a way to supply it inside this server.

@Cole If you don't know how to love yourself, how would you know how to love someone else? Sounds stupid, but it's sound advice heh.

Dan
@JourneymanGeek I rather fancied her as a kid. Even now, there's something about tomboy girls

@ewwhite not sure I've ever known any different to be honest, I'm very lucky

3:15 PM
@NathanC I'm getting there. I let an awesome girl walk out of my life because I was a douchenozzle.

@ewwhite USB 3.0 is kind of a strange thing to be adding to an old server.

Oh god I'm so glad I'm alone in this office or my boss would be looking at me oddly wondering why I'm laughing like a loon.
2

@Travis: I'd dropped out of uni for the second time, got dumped, and couldn't find a job. Twas a low point

@Dan They wear out one word and have to move on to the next... Fagot

Dan
@ChrisS I really hate that word

3:16 PM
@ChrisS: people smoke a fag all the time.

@Cole Happens to the best of us. You never know, she may walk back. Obviously, don't hang on that one since "the one" could drop in front of you at any moment :P

@Chopper3 Hey, I was used to it, too... Now, I'm dealing with a 250GB 1.5Gbps SATA disk spewing errors.

@JourneymanGeek Not in the US - MOST Americans do not know the actual definition of "fagot".

@ChrisS Well, as a former bassoonist...

That's what I think anyway. People always worry about finding "the one" and I hear it all the time from my friends (who again, are mostly female ...so probably why!).

3:17 PM
@ChrisS: actually in this case it was slang too. Most americans don't actually speak the queen's english

@NathanC She told me to get lost in Feb. (we broke up in Nov) Said she didn't love me anymore.

Darn right! 'Merica don't need no Monarchy!
(Don't mind that we're the largest source of tourist income for the British royals)

(right now, I have a half dozen old ladies, waiting for the go-ahead to find me a missus...)

@Cole Ouch. That's when you say "check please!" and move on to the next one. Heh.

3:19 PM
@NathanC My therapist doesn't believe that she meant that.

@ChrisS: its still their royals ;p

I was her first love.
So who knows, however she drove past me the other day - no wave/beep/didn't even look at me.

Well she did and then whipped her head around

breakups are shit

3:20 PM
Therapist said it'll take about ~2 years to get over her.

@Cole Girls especially tend to hang on for a long time. Even if the love is gone.

@NathanC yeah when I said (in Feb) I was looking to move to the West Coast, she said don't.

@Cole My therapist said "pills a just a crutch, and don't really help." I dropped her that same day.

WTF: Domains: In the evaluation group we setup and maintain our own domain, but this is not practical for the entire corporation. In some situations we find it challenging to debug issues in our software because of the remote sites and the domain restrictions within the CORP domain. <my manager> to look at the possibility of creating child Domains within CORP to allow elevated access in a test environment.

Dan
@ChrisS Don't worry - one day we'll all be united under the European Union ;)

3:21 PM
Like one of my friends ...her boyfriend broke up with her when he moved out of state. They were together maybe two months. To this day (over a year later) she still tells me she's not over him.

@KevinSoviero she's right, for the most part. But they're to help you get on your feet.

@Cole I was seeing her for a phobia I have, and since then have started on SSRIs and am much better off for it...

Love how I'm the AD "expert" yet my manager never asks me before telling people things.
@KevinSoviero ah, well I'm on Wellbutrin and have Ativan for panic/anxiety attacks

@Dan I think I've had enough "Union" for one political system.

@NathanC her mom even said that she had never been so happy/like this with anyone.
I was just an idiot.

3:23 PM
@Cole The problem with Benzos is that your brain becomes dependent on them quickly... SSRIs as a bit better in that sense.

Dan
@ChrisS I think being united is a good thing, but the more it happens the harder it is to give people a voice

@Cole Well, don't beat yourself up too hard. If she really wanted to make it work she would've stuck around. As the (overused) saying goes, "everything happens for a reason."

Dan
People feel very disenfranchised with Europe, even though, overall, it's probably improved our standard of living, legal system and so on.

@Dan The people doing the "uniting" usually set it up so that the little guy gets ignored... We've got arguable the most f-ed up democratic/republic system in the world, and that needs to be addressed before we go merging with anything.

@NathanC Word.
@KevinSoviero yeah I haven't taken it in ~5 months

3:25 PM

Dan
@ChrisS As a people and a country I really like the USA, but a lot of your country (Like most of your three letter agencys) scare the crap out of me

@Dan Remember what you did last summer? The NSA remembers.

Dan
@NathanC Indeed :S

Good morning Gents!

anyone here know databases?

3:28 PM
which kind?
@ewwhite i bet you are going to say oracle

yep

Gross.

i am of no help to you sir

3:30 PM
The highpoint of my political interactions thus far, was our new (at the time) state governor denying rumors of supporting MMPR for our State House.
For a short moment I thought there was hope. That people might actually see there's better out there.

I'm looking for help analyzing this DB workload...

@tombull89 54.76 seconds :P

@tombull89 you twat - my hand's KNACKERED now

@tombull89 Does not interact well with chrome smooth scrolling extension :(

I kinda cheated...I have a mouse with one of the no-friction wheels on it. Click a button and it keeps going and going and going

3:33 PM
OK, scrolling madly I get 0.1m/s. Canna be right.

@NickM. you knew what?

So if you see an extremely read-heavy DB... And maybe @MikeyB can help here.
I'm going to post graphs.

@Tanner they were watching me

3:35 PM
Low CPU, high read rate (390MB/sec average), 800 IOPS average...

@ewwhite Why are you posting MetricsPorn? :)

@ewwhite And the problem here is... ?

This server is on fire... it has had four disk replacements...

@MikeyB It doesn't play nice with some addons. I managed 2 M/s :p

and now has errors on both sides of its OS mirror set

3:36 PM
^ 10000 transactions per second, 3300B transaction size. <1ms latency. OVER NFS. That's not even with multipath DNFS or IB replication...

and I'm tired of dealing with it... one of the OS disks is EIGHT years old..
so I need a new server to replace... but want to know if there's any specific optimization I should plan for to deal with such an uneven workload.
@MikeyB kick!

@ewwhite Yeah, just buy an ioScale card and don't worry about it ever again. ← I'm serious here

@MikeyB The array is 16 x 300GB 15k disks.
RAID 1+0... I'd like to know if I can do it in fewer drives.

well, RAID 10 and fewer drives don't tend to work :)

@ewwhite sure, just buy one 3TB cheapshit disk from Frys

3:39 PM
Morning all

I should be able to get that perf out of 8 x 600GB 10k 2.5" SAS

@ewwhite What's your frontend IOPS?

@Chopper3 I'm having trouble getting that 25-bay gen8
@MikeyB how to measure? I don't know. I'm just posting what I can observe at the block level. It's Oracle on raw partitions.

@ewwhite huh?

@ewwhite Pull an AWR for an hour or so

3:41 PM
Standalone box... 10,000 DB connections all day long
@Chopper3 in the US, it's only available as a SmartBuy bundle

don't know what that is sorry

@ewwhite @?/rdbms/admin/awrrpt.sql

@Chopper3 Here, HP bundles some nice packages together for certain lines... but the pricing is variable and typically only lasts a month or two

@ewwhite ah - ours are ALWAYS CTO, can't do anything else, part of the deal

@MikeyB I should get a dba to run that

3:44 PM
@ewwhite Yeah, ask him to pull an AWR for a couple hours of workload and send it to you. Default stats snapshot interval is 1h I think, can adjust to 10m if you want: execute dbms_workload_repository.modify_snapshot_settings (interval => 10,retention => 14400);

Lotus Connections meeting :(
This makes me sad

Oh Kerio, how much I hate you and your lack of documentation -_-
I did a test recovery on the new server and a couple users' mailboxes ended up empty. One over 2 GB. Yay!

4:02 PM
@NathanC why use it then?

We're stuck with it until at least the end of the year.

I have a friend of mine who works in break/fix desktop tech support, and HATES it, as you'd expect. I offered to teach him Linux, et al., and I would teach him very well. But where could he get a job with no real Linux exp. on his resume?

@KevinSoviero That place that @ewwhite works, probably.

Probably no where

@MichaelHampton Where?

4:07 PM
Nobody there has any Linux experience either.

Well, you usuallyget some Linux experience while managing a windows environment
Just to solve some problems.

@MichaelHampton burn

lol

@Travis What if he got his RHCSA?

@KevinSoviero Hit or miss I'd guess. All a cert proves is he can study and pass a test. I passed Security+ back in 2010. I can't tell you what the difference between AES and Blowfish encryption is... I failed the VMWare VCP test but I can completely build a functioning VM infrastructure

4:13 PM
@Hennes what environments have you been working in? Most Windows admins I've seen piss themselves when you put them in front of a unix console...

@KevinSoviero To make my point if it isn't clear. A cert only provides a certainty that knowledge is present. Experience demonstrates the knowledge

The Red Hat certs actually require you to put together a real live Linux environment and do typical basic sysadmin tasks, like install the system, fix a broken NFS mount, etc.

@voretaq7 I am not part of the most thank god

@MichaelHampton Fix a broken NFS mount?

A full windows environment with a few hidden VM so solve things where windows just did not cut it (and lfexible coworkers)

4:14 PM
He would really need to find himself a desktop support job in a mixed environment - that's how I started with Linux

Also, being the only one to grok a bit helped

@voretaq7 Yes, well, it's NFS so I expect that to be rather difficult...

@MichaelHampton no, not at all...

E.g. the (sun) web server is down after the power dip
walk to console, type `boot` <Enter>

The certification exam is performance-based, meaning that candidates must perform tasks on a live system, rather than answering questions about how one might perform those tasks.

The hands-on nature of this exam make real-world experience a critical facet of preparation.

4:14 PM
I got jobs!

Gotta come to NYC, though

Fixed.
@Travis It's not real-world if you're not dealing with a 10 year old system full of cruft and breakage.

@ewwhite Can I telecommute on a contractor basis :)
@voretaq7 I agree. That's why I was saying cert vs. experience is a little different. Although, having both does help

@Travis hell naw

4:16 PM
If you were in a REAL enterprise, your new installs would have cruft and breakage!
2

@MichaelHampton RHEL 2.1 IS APPROVED FOR PRODUCTION. NO LATER!

@MikeyB WTF?

@KevinSoviero … the context is clear, no?

@ewwhite I was just hoping I could use my 10GBE NIC to download your pr0nz!

@MikeyB Just an exclamation of disbelief.

4:18 PM
@Travis UNITS NAZI SAYS NICE 80GbE NIC YOU HAVE THERE

lol
@MikeyB Iz berry vast! Iz berry qwik at dunlundin da pr0nz!

So just how much discussion do you think "should post age show as '2 hours' or '2 hours ago'" could generate?
nuts.

codinghorror hasn't left his vaccum yet..."1 hour" could mean anything in the context of a post if you've never visited the site

@MikeyB Show absolute times. People are smart, they'll figure it out.

@Travis And that's the only case where it might make sense. And no, it couldn't mean anything else. c.f. 'just now', '36 minutes', '2 hours', '4 days', '1 week', '3 months'

4:27 PM
@MikeyB In the big picture though....is it really a trivial problem to add "ago" to it? Simple fix to add clarity

@Travis ... if english only.

@MikeyB Do away with it completely. Simply put a UTC time stamp on it

@Travis ISODATE :)

In reality, it doesn't matter if it was a few seconds ago or a few years ago as long as someone can relatively easily see if a post was made on 5/29/2011 or 5/29/2013

MS E3 Presentation now - Apple WWDC Keynote in 30 mins - time to geek-out suckaaaaz

4:32 PM
@Chopper3 I'm hoping for an OS X update that fixes the shitty I/O scheduler
(I know I'm not getting one, but a man can dream)

@voretaq7 HOW?

Awesome..my stock just dipped 1/2 again

@Chopper3 well maybe they can switch to a real kernel instead of that Mach shit
or barring that, isn't the I/O scheduler just another plug-in in Mach? Replace it with one whose algorithm isn't "STOP EVERYTHING - NOBODY MOVE! somebody wants to access the disk..."

@voretaq7 exactly - imagine how hard it'd be to switch it out

@Chopper3 not nearly as hard as I'll beat the idiot responsible for the current abomination if I ever meet him...
(bad kernel code is inexcusable - even Linus says so!)

4:35 PM
@voretaq7 what's the actual issue

also apparently Linus is threatening to yell at the Linux kernel devs again...
@Chopper3 Take an OS X system, put it under mild load, and then do something disk intensive. The whole damn OS grinds to a halt

@voretaq7 The beach ball means it's time to go back up to the Starbucks counter and order another latte.

("mild load" by me is a web browser, a virtual machine, a few terminals, and then do something like dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/shitpile bs=1M count=10000 to make it collapse under its bad I/O handling)
@MichaelHampton ...I'd die of caffeine poisoning.
actually you don't always get the beachball
and if you have SSDs or something blazingly fast underlying the disk subsystem it's not totally blowful

Like the /dev/null filesystem?

@voretaq7 smaller blocksize might help
but yeah OS X is terrible

4:41 PM
@MikeyB not really (you might get a few less logjams, but anything that hits the disk will still choke)

@voretaq7 You want to really suffer, use FC multipath on OS X

No thanks... I think I'll leave OS X for those who can't handle FreeBSD...

@MikeyB bleh
I've had the displeasure.
