Bob
9:00 AM
didn't even know LEDs could do that

@Bob ah... well, the pictures can't tell that story. I feel for you then.

Bob
eh, overall it looks alright
I got what I paid for :P

Run over to Antec and look at their BStock. They got a few Sonata IV cases for less than $60... fantastic quiet cases, all reserved and professional looking

Bob
the only Antec case I can pick up at my main parts shop for ~$60 is the One S3
which looks pretty bad, tbh

@BonGart: he's in australia, everything is marked up a lot ;p

Bob
9:02 AM
@BonGart ooh, smooth
hm. that image actually looks better at a large size

actually the fact that I have a LOT of computer stores in a small area is why I could afford a good system, I comparison shop the hell out of things

Bob
@JourneymanGeek surprisingly, some hardware is actually cheaper than, say, the US :P
it's the software that's crazy

Bob
pretty ironic

we're using visio again :/
and MS project
is not a fan of visio
@Bob: I just abuse my dreamspark account ;p

Bob
9:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't have the premium one D:

@Bob: IT student ;p
need to check if mine works actually

Bob
@BonGart wait a sec, where do optical drives go in that thing? o.o

@Bob behind the door in the front

Bob
@BonGart also the sonata 3 is about $160
@BonGart ah, it's a door
bit too cramped here for that :P

@Bob that's why I linked you to one from their BStock. IMHO, in the US, buying from the Antec BStock supply is the only way to go

Bob
9:06 AM
that would not have worked for the earlier drives
I distinctly remember old (4x?) CD drives with gears slipping if there's anything blocking the way and requiring disassembly to fix

@Bob Antec seems to be big on doors. Not doors the drive opens, just doors you open. The door is to reduce dust buildup in and through the drives

Bob
@BonGart yea, that one might actually be slightly cheaper to buy from there and get shipped

@BonGart You still need the air flow to come from somewhere

@BonGart: also reduces noise, and lets them shape airflow

@Kwaio They took that into account, with the large vents on the side, as well as the vertically mounted hard drives

9:09 AM
@Bob i got doors, and on an auto eject (after burning) it scares me that the door is going to toast the cd tray mechanism

@BonGart the fractal design define has doors with dust filters behind
they're really easy to take off and clean
one underneath by the power supply and to in the front

the whole Sonata line at Antec took long looks at maximizing airflow and controlling it, to reduce the number of fans you could or would put in a case... to make the case and computer quieter

@Bob I adjusted the Ketch mechanism, so the cd can fling the door open easier. the Cds have sencors now for jammed, but still were not designed for opening doors

heh
I get reminded of the story of someone who used a cd rom drive with a cronjob to powercycle a system ;p

lol

@JourneymanGeek what is a cronjob?

@Psycogeek: basically the *nix equivilent of task scheduler

Bob
@JourneymanGeek dailywtf? :P

it lets a user start up things at specific times, intervals or at reboot

Bob
9:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek yup.

@Bob: hehe. took me a moment to google it

@flote lol, not sure if that is worse than another cat video or not :-)

haha, it's tray-related!
100% on topic ;)

Bob
though I'm not really looking at a computer upgrade anyway :\

that looks a lot like a modernised centurion
the grill on ours is rusting, and the foam they use for dust-reduction crumbled after 6 years ;p
replaced it with felt ;p

9:20 AM
night all

Bob
@BonGart night
I actually might replace my existing one :P (that USB 3.0 extension cable is getting annoying)

@JohnCavil there?

Bob
caesum

MALLEUS TEMPUS!

9:22 AM
@Bob: ooh, nice

@JourneymanGeek The end is sad

Bob
and 8 3.5" bays!

mine has one, and it uses an internal usb male plug. Ended up getting a header.

Bob
mine's getting a little cramped :P
@JourneymanGeek wtf

9:22 AM
@JohnCavil Semper fi!

Bob
stoy

ZABIVAT' VREMYA!

Bob
stahp

@Bob: its the only thing I hate about this case

HAMMAHTIME!

Bob
9:23 AM
stop

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
halt

HAMMERZEIT!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm?

oh Bob. stop

Bob
9:23 AM
oh, the plug?

HAMMERTIME!

stop

HAMMERTIME!

yeah
the plug

what plug?

Bob
9:24 AM
@jokerdino the plug

but which one?

MALLEUS TEMPUS!
HAMMAHTIME!
HAMMERTIME!

Bob
o.O

HAMMERZEIT!

go to bed @JohnCavil.

Bob
9:25 AM
I think we broke it...

Error 408 occured, I will call the maid (@Zirak)

Bob
@somequixotic HALP

dx.com/p/… got one of these

start
There, fixed it; did I?
2

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's just... dirty

9:25 AM
lol
@Bob: it works ;p

Bob
@TomWijsman lol

@TomWijsman great. you did stop him!

Bob
well, it's stopped spamming hammertime now

I also have a USB hub at the back cause my keyboard sometimes dosen't switch off its backlight when my desktop does.
XD

@JourneymanGeek so that USB wire comes off the motherboard , then goes to where?

9:31 AM
@Psycogeek: header -> USB female -> USB male -> front panel
so I have one more USB 3.0 connector inside my case not in use

@JourneymanGeek So it gromit fits in the case hole ?

@Psycogeek: dosen't need to

Hot glue?
:-)

@Psycogeek: its all internal ;p
and it can't reach outside the case

so this is just to jumper it to a front pannel? but front pannel connects are different?

9:35 AM
er...
ok, the front panel has a normal MALE usb connector on the other end
not a header like most do

It came like that?

i am wondering if i can fix my USB2 only front pannel
I only "need" usbanything out front, but if i could fix it it might be "better"

hmm
might need a little work

I take apart again, it uses another "header" type connect on the other side.

9:42 AM
oh, if you can work out where its broken it may be wasier
*easier

Assuming i could connect to it, USB2 port PCB mount things are 100% compatable with USB3?

hmm, yeah
I'd worry about physical size and location

@JourneymanGeek I mean to fix it to a USB3 from 2

@Psycogeek: oh wait
you want to convert a USB 3 header to plug into a USB 2 front panel?

@JourneymanGeek Yes, let me back up. The case is an older style. Only has usb2 on the face/front. I have a USB3 header on the motherboard .

9:45 AM
@Psycogeek aren't the cables incompatible?
and connectors

there's an adaptor I think

but does a usb2 connector and cable have the bandwidth?

@flote Well JMG showed this link dx.com/p/… That is a real USB3 motheboard header and 2 outs.

@Psycogeek yeah from the motherboard, but can you really plug a usb2 cable into that and still get usb3 functionality

something like this?

9:48 AM
@flote Does it have more wire connecting points?

@flote: you can just ignore the extra pins

@JourneymanGeek ok. that was my question :)

@flote: from the system's POV its like plugging in a USB 2.0 device into a USB 3.0 connector
or the other way around

Hello - in review there are a bunch of wiki edits for tags that really should not be tags - for eg there was one for "catalina" which has only one question and is a tomcat script. I am rejecting the edits, but what is the right approach for getting rid of the tag?

@JourneymanGeek so it would only have USB2 speeds , unless i get a proper USB3 port?

9:50 AM
@Paul: built a list, meta
@Psycogeek: yeah.

@JourneymanGeek yeah, so there's no real point in plugging two usb2 ports from the front of the case into it

or get something like mine, maybe with screwholes and get creative

@JourneymanGeek Yes, and its cheap enough and you have tested it. so it and some wire might even be more usefull than stuffing a Pannel on the back.

dx.com/p/… I'm pondering one of these ;p

@JourneymanGeek mount that about anywhere

9:53 AM
yeah, or see if you can find one with an actual bracket

i had the IP address manually set to 10.0.0.1 on an XP machine, and now i've changed it to 192.168.0.120 through the GUI (network connections, peroperties, tcp/ip)
now it won't connect to my Vista machine, and i just found out why, when i do ipconfig in cmd on XP machine i can see the IP 10.0.0.1 listed as if it's not changed
i'll try to reboot the XP machine now
but is this normal?

diffrent NIC ?

you have to reboot for IP change to take effect on XP?

not as far as I remember
tho before you reboot. try ipconfig /renew ?

no, it's the same NIC on XP machine, it only has one Ethernet port
@JourneymanGeek it's a bit late for that now, but you might be right there
@JourneymanGeek i forgot to try /renew
thanks!

9:58 AM
iu thought /renew was to refresh DHCP leases
Or acquire a new dynamic address

yeah, actually

@JourneymanGeek I figured those would exist. That might be the way i would get the more USB3 without any hub thing . Assuming i went past the 4 there on the back. I never got far with USB3 before because of overclocks. So i still dont know for sure if putting many Old USB2 perefrials on USB 3 ports , will mess with the speed of a full USB3 Hard drive (needing speed)

Its my "have you turned it off and on again" for network issues

rebooted and it works now, new IP is 192.168.0.120 and i can connect to the Vista machine
so what then, this is only necessary when manually configuring IP addresses? is that right?

@JourneymanGeek reboot is still the canonical solution on windows machines

10:00 AM
@Kwaio: naturally

@Sammy You shouldn't have to reboot for that, but maybe switch off/on the NIC in windows

@Kwaio or just do the ipconfig /renew right? that should have the same effect?

Maybe, I don't know

so to sum it up, when you change the IP address on a NIC you manually configure, use one of following methods for the new IP to take effect:
1. ipconfig /renew
2. disable and then enable the NIC
3. reboot the computer
something like that i guess?
but yeah, rebooting definitely solves most of windows problems

I'd try those
but rebooting is a no-brainer

10:04 AM
alright, thanks!

@JourneymanGeek was it you using copy.com?

never heard of it

you were using cuppa then?

hmm
dropbox, and that one by the teamviewer guys
now, I just shove it on my fileserver ;p

i am using private git repo on bitbucket.
@JourneymanGeek was it box then?

10:12 AM
I can't remember what its called ;p
stopped using it when they stopped unlimited sync
wasn't box

cubby

@Kwaio @JourneymanGeek i just checked, XP renews the IP automatically even if you set the IP manually, and it doesn't matter if the NIC is connected/disconnected to anything or enabled/disabled. what matters is that the IP you are changing from and to is in the same range...
@Kwaio @JourneymanGeek in conclusion: if you're changing the IP from 192.168.0.120 to maybe 192.168.0.130 then XP will handle renewal automatically, but if you are changing from 10.0.0.1 to 192.168.0.120 then you have to do the IP renewal manually
FWIW, the XP machine and Vista machine are connected P2P with crossover cable, and both are configured manually

@JourneymanGeek How TeamViewer knows when I use software in commercial purposes for free? They monitor traffic? If so, that must rewrite a lot of staff workers to monitor every remote assistance.

@Boris_yo: its just a licence

Bob
basically, you're doing something illegal and can be sued for it

10:26 AM
if they hate you, they can use it to score one over you.

@Boris_yo is that the one you connect by hopping on thier website first?

@Bob So it just puts me under risk and doesn't necessity mean I will be sued next time I use it?

It is possible one of us might notify TeamViewer about your abuse.

@Psycogeek No it is stand alone application to remote connect. Both host and client must have same version for it to work.

Bob
sometimes, they rely on good faith

10:31 AM
@jokerdino How would you know about abuse? Only host and client know.

Bob
does not mean you should violate that
this is why we can't have nice things...

@Bob and disguntled employees :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek well, I suppose XD

hehe

10:44 AM
The business owner believes the demand was sparked by a tip-off from a disgruntled employee using the BSA’s incentive scheme, which pays up to £20,000 for such information. The BSA says a quarter of cases involve payments to informants.

10:54 AM
heh
sabotage by law enforcement is suprisingly effective

Is there supposed to be a way to fully disable an integrated Intel GPU IGPU in the bioses. this is a z87

I think its done by default if you have a discrete graphics card

Also I have question about integrated videocard. What happens if one fails and you buy dedicated videocard? How do you make BIOS use it if BIOS defaults to integrated videocard?

@Boris_yo: these days the integrated graphics are on the processor
so, if it fails your processor is toast

@JourneymanGeek Ah BIOS disables integrated videocard automatically when it detects dedicated?

10:59 AM
otherwise if its an old enough system it just detects there's a discrete graphics card and works.
@Boris_yo: yes
you can enable the integrated GPU on some modern systems tho

@JourneymanGeek so mabey this "Enable Multi Monitor" , is what turns it back on. the rest of the time the existance of the other disables.

@JourneymanGeek Why such a decision to move it from motherboard to processor? Don't tell me it's speed...
