Cool pictures superuser.com/questions/643144/… to bad the info is wrong, because the "end of the disks" is about 50% slower than the beginning. Keep the pics , and the head jumping.

2:25 AM
Anyone know if latency is supposed to drastically go up when the connection is saturated?

@soandos shouldnt it? Packet has to fight to get out, therfore time it takes to get out is longer?

Why can't it get queued in to go out immediately?
(and same for the return trip)
@Psycogeek can you test (do a ping -t while speedtest)?

uhmmm :-) because latency does not determine an ammount of data, just the time it takes for all the hops. although latency can be tested with tiny data.

Right, so why should bandwidth saturation matter? (I am doing a 32 byte ping)

@soandos because you didnt prioritise that, and it still is going through constipated pipes :-)

2:30 AM
Same priority for everything by default no?
so it should just be done at the next timeslice (sub 1 ms)

Yes, I think there are ways to change that.

But I mean default

@soandos But it still has to get through each traffic jam. the one at the nic, the one at the router, the one at the modem, the one down the line. Even if say i was passing it down a PCI-E lane (major speed) all that traffic still slows the stuff on the bus, SOme.

@Psycogeek the limit is not the hardware, its the ISP. the pipes on the hardware level are all basically empty (16 mbps is not straining anything)

try the tracert?? which sees each hop thing.

2:34 AM
@Psycogeek its a local issue im pretty sure
I just want to know if its standard
or if my connection is junk

@soandos: if the router is having issues yeah

@soandos I can do the test for fun, but i am pretty sure of the results. even pulling web pages and minor stuff while the speed test is trying to do its thing , bends the results a lot.

but in most cases thats on your side

@Psycogeek I concerned with latency, not the thoughput, @JourneymanGeek my router might be bad (connection drops for ~1second every few minutes)

Also that IwhileO any of the things that are a one lane road. If i set to half duplex, i can get faster "speed test" but not reality. That isnt reversed :-) If there is only One thing going one way, on half duplex it is faster.

2:38 AM
I'm no-where near those limits

I live right next to all this silicon valley stuff, so on the ping part of the test, you want across the world or speedy local?

@Psycogeek either, just with a saturated connection

Google average 27ms, during test average 141 146 and 120

kk
thanks

allowed bandwith was pretty much saturated during the download part, holy cow speeds (-:

2:50 AM
nice

ping -l 1 makes tiny ping google again, during speed test averages 88 84 70

3:25 AM
heh, nearly flagged this "No, not actually Kelly Clarkson" superuser.com/a/643177/10165

3:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek Kelly been busy spreading her legs all over with links to her (as shown in profile) own website. Plus the software is not really free, it is probably baitware, where it says "free download" scans the disk, and then says"ok now you buy and we feex for ya" Like a whore :-) $50 actual cost of the software.
I add one little complaint with such software, showing me a bunch of file names, and saying you can recover them, doesnt always go as planned, it might recover "something" with a file name on it, but it may not be able to assemble all the clusters that the file uses.

@DEFCON1 @bob's pointed to the help, question bans are automated, we cannot lift them. read meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/86997/… for more info

Q: Keyboard keycap protection film or laquer to stop letters rubbing off

Paddy3118Any ideas on how to stop the lettering on a new keyboard from rubbing off? I am about to replace my Microsoft ergonomic 4000 laptop which suffers from this and I am thinking of ways to stop the problem without affecting my typing too much. Current thoughts are to: Use a layer of clear nail va...

buy a $79 keyboard , as the last one you will ever need? Or keep trying to fix $15 ones , and filling up the landfills with them :-)
Sounds like an infomertial " why at one time I used to buy cheap keyboards, and toss them out about every 1-2 years, Then i found "insert name" and i have saved more money by purchacing a keyboard designed in the 1980s . You too can save da environment and save money. For just 3 payments of 24.99 it'll be the last keyboard you ever own. (or the 2nd to the last)

4:14 AM
get a blank keyboard
solved!

@JourneymanGeek if i took all my keycaps off, and started typing, it would kook a biddle but loke ris <-that bad

4:28 AM
There is a russian cumulation of hard drive failures data on the web. it shows that Hitachi drives are Top Of the Line. Hitachi drives have been lower priced, so i find me some cheap ones, and newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145475 the reviews show (again) worst drive on the planet. Whats up with that russian data ?

4:46 AM
@Psycogeek: might be the sizes
most of the data is for the biggest drives in the line
also, if you notice, anyone whose drive dies gives it 1 star
even if it was a fine drive in life

@JourneymanGeek Yes i was trying to determine if it is users who do not know how to deal with a >2T drive in the system.
@JourneymanGeek And i have a feeling that people dont really rate a simple drive item as a thing to do, but Fail on them, they become more vocal.

yup
I like hitachis, personally

@JourneymanGeek do you have 7200s? I am trying to find out if they are still much hotter than the 5400 and 5900 style, the green kinda things.

@Psycogeek: I have nothing but them
actually
my 2.5 inch 40gb drive is 34 degrees, my 7200 rpm 3tb drive is 38
not a big difference

the old ones could get really hot, like a stack of them minimally cooled, i could not keep my finger on them. Minimally cooled meaning case flow, but no specific fan for them.
@JourneymanGeek 38 is a happy drive :-)

4:59 AM
oh, I have a 200mm case fan just for the drives
dosen't run very fast tho

@JourneymanGeek well crud, descisions descisions. 3T hitachis Cheap cheap per gig newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149396 Suposedly toshibas are made by hitachi

@Psycogeek: the 3T hitachi is a pretty good bet
backblaze used a ton

WD red, newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236344 supposed to be the MTBF wonder of the world, isnt comming off so wonderfull for users.

WD red isn't a drive for system use

How do they do it :-) i have more drives than they have reviews (not really) and i have only had a fail or 2 in eons. and those fails were back in time
@JourneymanGeek It is suposed to be able to cope with raid well, that is my use.

@50-3 Got one spelling error "By placing data on the outer edge you are able to access move data with each spin of the drive. " superuser.com/questions/643144/…
Move = more

5:30 AM
@Psycogeek on mobile with a Melbourne service provider so it was hard to update but now fixed

C is shortstroked partition, M is at the end of the drive and quite full, and defraged, so the only place that data can land on it is the end of the drive. test is done 2 times, but it is loose test anyway
@50-3 Now i delete all my comments ok?

5:49 AM
@psycogeek sure, really interesting results cool if I update to include this information as I think I'm not the only one who would like to see it?

@50-3 it is way more complicated than that, a more simple version of it would be better. This is raid 0 teams, split in arrays, and partitioned for every purpose they will have. Speed at the (teams) front, storage at the back.
If you put it up, it could raise questions, that , , , well its complicated :-)
the max is mostly only cache speeds. The Min is what counts for ME more.

@user182904 Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

hey ....anyone has emulated raspberry pi on linux ...
..??

-- More bad analogies : Its like when playing a 3D rendered game, If i get somewhere around 30-60FPS life is ok . It is when the frame rates take a dive >20fps in certian areas of a game that tick me off. When I look at a benchmark for a video card, I am more interested in the Min frame rate. Not some cute numbers for the high end.

nobody has done that ..!!
strange o_O

6:15 AM
@user182904 did you ask over at the Rasp Pi site ? (or would it be off topic there)

i tried....saw many posts ...
i thought someone would be here, who've done it before ....
so just came here ...

@user182904 there may be, someone who shows up here (just not here now) or is idle now.

@Psycogeek ...that's the only hope for now ...!! :)

6:30 AM
fuck Optus
@Sathya I was actually trying to draw your attention to the bit about a 'doubt' :P
@Psycogeek are you referring to oneclick deployment?
@somequixotic that's the sound driver listed under the audio tab of the wine config program

7:00 AM
@Bob lmao.. fwiw I noticed it instantly, and the IP addr check verified what I thought the location was

Why even having fast CPU and SSD doesn't not speed that much Windows Update patches? It seems there's something else involved besides those 2 when it comes to updating. Maybe Windows Update does file verification through internet?

They obviously download the updates... but maybe they have to build a report to upload before
What grind my gears is that I have a brand new lenovo T530 laptop, but it still lags with the newer google maps
which renders using the GPU...

9:51 AM
@Kwaio No, because updates are first downloaded and then installed. I was referring to installation process.
@Kwaio Maybe GPU is weak? What about CPU?

@Boris_yo It's indeed using the i5's inbuilt GPU, but i'm surprised such a "simple" webapp can outrun an inbuilt GPU
probly an intel hda 4000

does kexec support nt kernals ?

Q: how much does "chown -R" affects disk IO performance? how can I test it?

19 LeeI'm running a Cent OS server with a NAS storage. I have heard "rm" command makes overall disk IO slow. So, I gave up doing rm -R. I will do rm one by one with a shell script. --EDIT--> rm and sleep 0.1 one by one slowly. Before I delete files, I want to change owner with "chown -R" command. I ...

that question is completely full of WTFs

lol
someone gave him bad information
I'm wondering what the hell he's deleting that slows shit down so much in a nas

Bob
well, if he's running the rm command on a network mounted drive that could actually be kinda slow
well, isn't this handy
3
Q: How to limit CPU and disk usage of rm to allow other programs to remain functional

user217631When deleting a large file, rm seems to be hogging all the available CPU and disk resources so that other program are hanging. Is there a way to limit a programs - specifically a CPU or disk intensive program - effect on the system? Is there a way to limit its effect when deleting a large file?

Bob
2:35 PM
holy shit
KSnapshot comes with an export to imgur thing
amosgt a whole list of others
this is amazing
@somequixotic that's the place the driver is listed
???
a 2011 forum post implies you're supposed to change the wine audio driver from within wine's emulation of the Windows registry
what the fuck
winetricks does let me choose between alsa/coreaudio/disabled/oss, though
8
Q: How to change the default audio in Wine to Alsa only

Luis AlvaradoI am trying to change the default Audio sound system to ALSA so it fixes some sound issues. How can this be done? Am using 1.3.x branch from PPA which is much better than the 1.1.x and 1.2.x in every way.

>
Re: how do i add pulseaudio to the audio drivers in wine?

you can use alsa and skip one step

you will have better latency with alsa.
yea.. except when alsa is actually emulated by pulseaudio
so much for skipping a step
no, clippy, you're not helping
weird
I wonder if it's because of the general shittiness of the machine
or maybe I should've just installed kubuntu :\

2:52 PM
lol

3:02 PM
@john_acton Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)

3:13 PM
@Bob that actually sounds like a good plan

Bob
@somequixotic what

@Bob updating the registry to change to winepulse backend for mmdevapi

Bob
there is no reason for emulator settings to be stored within the emulated environment
@somequixotic wait what
I currently have no idea how to change to winepulse :P
it's not in the winetricks list

@Bob it's not in the emulated environment; it's in plain text files in ~/.wine somewhere, I forget where... just edit whatever the registry file in ~/.wine to point to winepulse... now the trick of finding which file and which registry setting
check HKCU or HKLM \Software\Wine\Drivers

Bob
@somequixotic no, the trick is finding how what/where winepulse is
some references elsewhere (again, 2011) saying that it's not enabled in the official repos

3:18 PM
@Bob there are two winepulses, so don't get confused by that

Bob
@somequixotic it's quite disturbing that core settings would be in a place accessible to emulated programs :\
@somequixotic wait what?

the first winepulse was a patch on top of the old sound API (pre-wine1.3), which stopped being maintained around 2011 because mmdevapi came out
the second winepulse is a backend to the mmdevapi work and is available in upstream wine as of 1.3.something

Anyone know how to download high quality videos from youtube? I wanted a copy of a video that goes up to 720P on there

@SimonSheehan not legally

@somequixotic Laws suck :(

Bob
3:19 PM
@somequixotic (depends on country :P)

Canada has now laws! :P

We have now laws? What are they?

@CanadianLuke Feed the polar bears I think was the first one

Bob
even more disturbing: why are driver settings under HKCU and not HKLM?

second canadian law: Make sure you're neighbours have enough oil to power their igloo

Bob
@somequixotic not sure what I'm supposed to be changing :P

It melted this summer :(

there's a winealsa.drv key under Drivers

@CanadianLuke Lol our last winter sucked :/

@somequixotic winealsa.drv is in /usr/bin/lib/wine/fakedlls/
can't find anything to do with pulse

uh, how 'bout no

@SimonSheehan an interesting way to see and download off of youtube is Jdownloader. Jd is a java based multidownloader that is supported by a thousand plugin things, the actual security of it I dont know for a fact. I can link grab the whole list of a youtube video and the person then can GUI see what is all there, and choose one or many to download.

@Psycogeek have you tested it yourself? I know a few of these have some spyware / crapware in them

@SimonSheehan I have used it for years now, it seems to be a community project, i use it "portably" with it all in its own hole. Just get it from the actual source.

@SimonSheehan that is them

awesome. let me fire up my mac and get it then

Bob
@somequixotic anyway, yea, I'm going to sleep. thanks for the help, but I really don't see any way forward now (apart from possibly compiling it myself, which requires far too much effort for tonight)

3:52 PM
@Bob compiling it is fairly easy... ./configure --prefix=/usr && make && make install
you probably just don't have it compiled in your version
you'd just have to install the deps then do a compile, very straightforward
sleep, though

@Psycogeek installed it, seems complex
how does on use this program
oh wait, slowly figuring it out..

@SimonSheehan uhh, one uses it for everything :-) youtube just happen to work well too. the linkgrabber section is where the sniffing results show, you can add a url, or it can snag urls from the Copy buffer. one you have sniffed out (really anything) then you select what you want of that, (i use right mouse click) and "continue with selected package"

@Psycogeek Yeah, i saw that. Just stuck on "connecting" now

4:08 PM
The item is then shifted to the download tab, where depending on settings it either starts immediatly , or you push the play |> triangle and downloads begin.
@SimonSheehan router fun? an actual secure system should freek out about now, and say WTF is this and what do you think your doing :-)

@Psycogeek Eh my router shouldnt be blocking, dunno whats up :(

@Psycogeek why would a secure system be freaking out?

finally got it

@DarthAndroid making 100 connections at a time , checking for updates for itself. all things which i have to allow via the firewall.
@SimonSheehan you can throttle it with the speed stuff, but that has caused a Bug here, which others have reported . the error is something about the hard drive not being able to write. On that error things have to be restarted (if not resumable then restarted from scratch) It is better to just limit connections.
@DarthAndroid loggin in from a loose java program, un packaging stuff all over the drive, roboting its way around the web. Proxyfying, and refreshing IP.

4:32 PM
@Psycogeek JDownloader messes with the networking stack?
(I.e. configuring the system to use proxies, etc.)
a program checking for updates is nothing out of the norm, though.

@DarthAndroid just using what is there? I dont know if it messes with the system,

what then do you mean by "proxifying and refreshing IP" ?

@DarthAndroid well if it was a hackers tool, wouldnt it be cool if it could be evasive, get a new ip at will , route through the web different? Get new scripts from the web . Nothing out of the ordinary for a downloader.
But i would want to know if a program was doing that on my machine :-)

I missed how you made the connection from "A tool to download data" to "it's a hacker's tool" to "things it would be cool if it did because lots of 'hacker tools' do these" to "your system should freak out"
It sounds like everything there is 100% speculation on your part, and you have no clue what it actually does.

@DarthAndroid The system does not know what it is? I can speculate how the system would react any way i desire.

4:41 PM
Gah! The review audit system screws with my head at times.

@Mokubai Fight the system! When you find them, improve the edit and make it worse!

I'm like "I thought that question was okay at the time, why was it closed?" then click Reopen only to see the "Audit passed!" thing.

From jay leno , last night

I's messing with my perception of reality. Is everything just another test? Or should I be questioning everything I do in the review queues?

@Psycogeek Perhaps, but there's a difference between informed speculation and wild speculation, and you should avoid the latter
@Mokubai This is a test.

4:44 PM
@Psycogeek Means nothing to me I'm afraid. We (thankfully) don't get the likes of Jay Leno round here...
who's harney sushi?
I get "miso harney", but "sushi" ?

@NullPoiиteя Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)

unless you people pronounce sushi differently?

@Mokubai no its the me so horney part

Ah :)

@JohnCavil holla , but how ?

4:49 PM
@DarthAndroid there is no speculation at all, on how some of the real viruses have acted, that the system misses, that the user probably put on themselves. Getting new scripts and actions from the web, and being used as zombies to attack things.
World War Z movie

@Psycogeek But how does that relate at all to JDownloader?

5:04 PM
@DarthAndroid i am sorry dave, infinate loop in input command, that cannot be processed, please refer to section 3.14 of the manuel, and try again.

@Psycogeek Movie sucks they say...
How do you log-in to SE, SU or chat? @Psycogeek @DarthAndroid
I log-in only through myOpenID but it is flawed. It does not work often and I think it might be ditched some day. How can I secure my SU account if this happens? Can I connect my SE, SU account to another authentication services so I have additional option to log-in?

@Boris_yo it was worth watching, never seen so many zombies before, i was wondering how they processed all the 3D zombies into it.
i think you can go "direct" and log-in to the actual site like any other site http://stackexchange.com/users/login?returnurl=%2fsites "If you don’t already have an account on any of the above

click here to sign up"

@Psycogeek How do I link my existing accounts to another sign-in service?

@Boris_yo I do not know how to aquire the same user via a different log-in method. Meta question?

@Sidar Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

hi, I need to move video files based on their date into new folders ( on day basis )
anyone know how I can do that in windows 7?

@Boris_yo I use openID with google. Never had a problem with it.

@Sidar Is it on a year, month or day basis?

day

6:12 PM
If I group the files on date, it just says "Early this year"
I have no clue on how to set the date limit.
but if there is a batch that moves them automatically that would be great.

@Sidar Maybe you need to apply Windows 7 search filter. I don't know the commands but I am sure you can find them on Google. Try keyword "windows 7 search by date".

I can't find the day option though. Already looked

@Sidar sounds real usefull :-) i would use the details view, push on the column date (to srot by date), and select the files by date. someone could write a batch. parse out the date , make a folder from that date parse , then copy by date. robvanderwoude.com/datetimentparse.php (it wouldnt be me)

The thing is it just groups the files as "Early this year" which is complete garbage because that makes sorting pointless

6:22 PM
@Sidar yes using the grouping the way they do would not help what your trying to accomplish
details, sorting by date (not grouping by date), and shift select , would work.

oh G-d Damn. Yet another group for my daily reading ;-)

@Hennes nice

6:38 PM
@Hennes Maybe this website will interest you? futuretimeline.net

No idea. connecting to google.com in the status bar.... please wait
please wait
please wait your call is important to us
please wait
I guess I better SSH to my server at uni and lynx it from there

@Hennes Why companies always say that? To boost our self-esteem? To show us how they depend on us?

please wait while I come up with an answer ;-)
Your question is important to us. ;)

@Hennes Then why government institutions don't act the same? Postal service, police department, municipality etc.?
It's all about "their" interests eh?
@Psycogeek Do you shop on Amazon?

A few daya go we talked about 3HE mining on the moon
Grah. I hate it when markup does not work.
I should write a client which render things properly and upload each sentence as a PNG

6:54 PM
@Hennes Why not implement markup interface to make things at the click on the mouse button? That could make SE chatters' life easier...

That assumes people use a mouse
Which is not always true, even on windows
[Server] tag is almost gone. 80-ish questions remaining (more when I left, so soneone else is cleaning them to)

7:12 PM
@Boris_yo yes I have bought some things from amazon.
@Hennes I have not used a mouse in years , trackball :-) the upside down mouse .

@Psycogeek ugh. trackballs.

@Psycogeek Did you buy apparel there?

@Boris_yo no, nothing fits me anywhere, so i at least have to try things on. and i dont really buy much clothes anyway, because the old comfy ones still fit.

I remember years ago, in a bargain bin at Marshalls (while holding a bag for the woman who was shopping), I saw a Thumbstick mouse. It was yellow, had three buttons on the stalk you held in your fist, and a trackball at the top you used with your thumb.

Nope

this style?

It was a stick
imagine holding a pencil in your fist, where the eraser was under your thumb
now, put three buttons on the shaft of the pencil, and a trackball in place of the eraser
granted, we are talking a serial mouse connection as well... not ps2, not usb

@BonGart did it work?

like I said, it was in a bargin bin at a clothing store. There was also a regular, serial, three button mouse in the blister pack... big, yellow, crayon-like drawings on it. It worked, and well... I just haven't seen it since
qfonic.com/images/products/palmmouse/image01.jpg Kinda like that, but not nearly as thick, with the trackball on the top
and bright, safety-school bus yellow

interesting, makes me wonder if anyone has put a "lookaround" trackball on the top of a high-end joystick.

They also mention of brainwaves decoders and all thoughts being tracked and becoming available online.

Meh, I prefer some proper high speed link.
USB has too much overhead. We should dump it
2013 - Food prices are becoming dangerously high | Birth of a royal baby

@Hennes but it's very general purpose, and it has enabled wonderful things like entire device drivers in userspace with libusb

It is useful.

USB is for peripherals what ethernet is for networking

It just should not be used for things like external harddisks

@Hennes Its compatible with everything, and that's worth a lot

So is thunderbolt. :)
