@JourneymanGeek give me some tips, I'll add to the notes :P

@Sathya: probably the same things I'll tell anyone - which is on meta ;p
specifically for indian folk - the idea that Q&A sites are usually best as a last resort, and to always lay out what you have tried.

@Hennes and a knockoff xbox called the Xbox 365
@Sathya oh, I have dozens of tips

@TomWijsman "a year" in the world of web standards (and support)... is a pretty long time, actually.
@somequixotic Still somewhat disappointed that Mozilla isn't doing independent releases of Gecko anymore :\

Q: Avoid launching explorer to UAC-elevate a program from shell

nponeccopI'm a member of administrators group on Windows 7. I need to run foo.exe from a Cmd or Powershell. The exe file requires elevation to work but the elevation is not specified in its manifest. Usually I have to do start . to open Explorer, right-click the exe and select Run as administrator. Is ...

i cant figure it out what he exactly needs could some one help me in clarifying it?

I'm off. see ya

"I wonder if such elevate-command-sequence exists in cmd or powershell out of the box."
Thats the crux of the question

@Bob I don't know, but it's hammertime and hammerzeit

@JohnCavil Dafuq you speak russian?

Bob
1. that's not command line
2. that's not a one-time thing

he's looking for a powershell commandlet I think

Bob
2:36 PM
@NewProgrammerJames it's a worthwhile suggestion, but not relevant in this instance

so, the question is pretty hard to answer without knowing PS

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I can do it in .NET
I'll adapt it to a PS answer if no one's done it in about 14 hours
if I remember

2:54 PM
@Bob I'm thinking of actually running Windows on my dedicated server :S opensimulator.org/wiki/Feature_Proposals/BulletSim_OpenCL

WHY IT NO WORK
sigh.
I think I'm going to have to try another client
this is hopeless
sad thing is, my android phone connects better -_-

apparently it's standard to ship what's effectively completely broken versions of crap
either that or all the Linux devs are using (testing against) Windows XP and think that's the most recent
actually, that would explain a lot

@user253270 Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)

Bob
3:21 PM
@somequixotic heh, what happened?

@Bob rdesktop has an open bug about NLA but apparently it's hard, so they're trying to steal code from freerdp :P

whoa, apparently NSA google has been logging my location for the past 3 months -_- maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0/dashboard?hl=en

Bob
@somequixotic ...wasn't freerdp a fork of rdesktop?

I'm writing a web browser :D

Bob
and hasn't it been, I dunno, over three years since this was first mentioned?
and six years since the introduction of NLA?

3:23 PM
specifically for manual webapp testing. hehe. it has the necessary user agent to get through our proxy (IE8) but it's based on Qt 5.1's QtWebKit, which is at least usable. and it automatically separates each tab/window into a new isolated session (no cache, no cookies)

Bob
o.O
@Gowtham hm?

Didn't realize Maps app has a auto history track option

@Gowtham Since my GPS chip is disabled 99% of time, this is very inaccurate

What font is that?

@Kwaio I too have GPS disabled

its what I have been using and recommending recently

@JourneymanGeek the font?

nice. what is the latest version that you have?

4:07 PM
Hi guys, anyone got a quick answer? ... my USB keyboard was getting old (space bar failing e.t.c.)... I replaced it - new one fails to install "driver" under windows 7... I reboot and it works fine in BIOS/EFI, along with Windows 8 setup (from DVD), but, the moment Windows 7 boots, it doesn't work... I don't want to go through redoing all the USB drivers (but tempted to install Windows 8)... just wondering if anyone knows a quick fix

@Kwaio Don't you have places set like Work, Home ?

@Gowtham yeah, Chennai -> NJ -> Austin -> Chicago -> Frankurt -> Chennai
x2

Mine got set automatically I think, I don't remember me adding that stuff

wait that US trip wasn't counted

@Sathya that explains it ;p

4:08 PM
else I'd have another ~16k miles

Bob
@WilliamHilsum PS/2 adapter and port handy? :P
you could try deleting the driver cache, I suppose

@Bob none :(

@Sathya :O

I'll try another keyboard though... but, thought it was pretty generic :(

@WilliamHilsum bog standard keyboard, it seems

@TomWijsman it uses ECMAScript 5 extensively, but the old PhantomJS webkit doesn't support ES5, so I had to shim the chatbot JS all to hell

I have no usb.inf... can someone quickly verify that it should be there?
c:\windows\inf\usb.inf?

Bob
@WilliamHilsum more like stuck with a shitty netbook!

lol, k

@WilliamHilsum you missed the part where he doesn't want to be on Linux and is waiting for his Windows laptop to be repaired

@somequixotic I think things get easier if you just use the chat API (or well, the protocol, not sure if a defined API exists) instead.

im so out of touch :(

4:14 PM
@TomWijsman no API or protocol exists outside of screen stuffing a web browser loading the chat UI

Bob
@somequixotic tbh I'm probably more annoyed at the tiny screen and shitty keyboard (and the CPU) :P

That was bigger than I expected it to be
one sec

if any chat API existed (that was publicly accessible) I'd have written an Android app for it ages ago

@somequixotic Eh, I mean the AJAX calls.

Bob
@Gowtham pastebin recommended :P
@TomWijsman no guarantee that will stay constant

4:16 PM
@TomWijsman that's basically what Zirak's chatbot does, but you also have to login, and doing that at the HTTP level without any JS engine is a royal pain

It has a list of every device used from my computer :O

Bob
fml
went a whole winter avoiding a cold... catch one at the beginning of spring
this has been a terrible week

@Bob You neither have that guarantee with the UI; and probably, when one changes, the other will.

@Bob Go to sleep, you are swearing too much

as I understand it, he had two options: option 1 is to write essentially a JavaScript userscript to run in any browser and "automate" it to do user-y things like type into the text box and parse chat lines coming through and logging in (I wrote the logging in part in Selenium); or snag the HTTP(S) wire protocol via WebShark and push and pull those HTTP streams

4:17 PM
You usually don't ;p
And it's 2:17 AM there :O wtf

Bob
@Gowtham as I said, terrible week

How the hell are you able to stay up that long
:11178230 naw, googled ;p

Bob
missed the "there"

i just add 2 hours to my current time and flip AM to PM

Bob
@Gowtham well, I need this netbook in a workable condition by tomorrow morning

4:18 PM
to get to Bob's time
(equiv. 14 hours)

Bob
...later this morning

@somequixotic I'm pretty sure the OpenID part can be automated, which leaves you with producing the SE cookie; which shouldn't be that much work. It's a bit more involved, but it at least ends up being more stable; unless well, the PhantomJS rewrite ends up with something useful. But as usual, you can't expect much from a "major rewrite" unless you wait for it to go through all the bug fixes they do afterwards.

what more do you need to get working still?

Bob
@somequixotic well, I've pretty much given up on spotify (entertainment anyway) - youtube videos actually don't stutter, so definitely someting todo with wine

4:20 PM
@TomWijsman either way, if they significantly change up chat, both the raw wire protocol and the UI/DOM/JS will change significantly enough that a rewrite of whatever bot you code will be necessary, and IMHO it's much easier to automate the UI than the network protocol.

Bob
so, sorting out some kinks in how vim/konsole interact (my colourscheme is breaking :( )

and PhantomJS isn't a hindrance anymore because I shimmed basically all of ES5 in JavaScript itself, good enough to make the chatbot work
all we can benefit from PhantomJS improvements now is to either (a) remove the shim or (b) improve performance, but I don't care about perf because it isn't eating significant CPU

@Bob but it's morning there ;p

Bob

I don't really feel sleepy when I have something to do

@somequixotic Data & Spot. Interesting. Someone likes TNG ;)

@Boris_yo exist in a vacuum at least a lightyear away from the nearest source of matter/energy/light and you might be able to get the max claimed speed of a wireless router

@somequixotic or just stick everything in a perfect faraday cage :P

I'm sort of an "android" because of how non-sexual I live my life (like I'm neither male nor female nor interested in anyone "that way"), and I love my cat, and she's tabby (Maine Coon) like Spot

@WilliamHilsum copy mine perhaps ?

Bob
oh yea

its ok, thanks... copied from another machine here

54Mbps, 150Mbps, 300Mbps and 600Mbps. These are theoretical speeds but can one each such speeds in ideal situations?

Bob
I still have yet to sort out this damn thing ignoring the shutdown button options

4:24 PM
@somequixotic interesting

copied usb.inf from another machine, now it comes up as USB Composite device and still doesn't work :/
ARGH

@Boris_yo see my previous answer and Bob's previous answer
depends on how close you want to get

@Hennes Sir, please check your spelling of word "udderly".

Bob
@Boris_yo remember those are link speeds
you'll never get actual data transfer at those speeds

pretty much, you can only reach the actual theoretical maximum speed in a complete vacuum or a perfect faraday cage, but if you just want to come close-ish, it's pretty beneficial to live, I don't know, in a rural area away from other people and their wifi

4:26 PM
working now

oh yeah, and protocol overhead

bloody hell, that is going to drive me mad

so you can't reach those speeds even in a vacuum

@TomWijsman Command owner learned

@Boris_yo no, he means link layer speeds

!!/owner

@TomWijsman Hello, my owner is @somequixotic; yes, that's my slant owner.

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model (ISO/IEC 7498-1) is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the internal functions of a communication system by partitioning it into abstraction layers. The model is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection project at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The model groups similar communication functions into one of seven logical layers. A layer serves the layer above it and is served by the layer below it. For example, a layer that provides error-free communications across a network provides the path need...
the link layer may have a theoretical max of 54 Mbps, but you aren't going to get that with IP, TCP and HTTP on top during a download
because those protocols all have nonzero overhead (although HTTP's is effectively zero once you get past the HTTP headers)

Bob
ok, ime to test the power button
this had better not shut down again
THERE. FINALLY.
@somequixotic I just realised that I've been using Spotify to listen to music I already have :S

4:33 PM
@Bob I discover organically as follows: search for song name I like; find some artist that covers it; then listen to that artist's album(s) (they are usually right down my alley because if they're covering X song then they must be in that genre... ish)

@somequixotic Because of overhead I will never get full speed?

Bob
@somequixotic I haven't quite reached that stage of exploration yet.

@Boris_yo and things like electromagnetic radiation, other wifi devices nearby, other bluetooth devices nearby, running microwaves, etc. all fighting for spectrum and adding noise to it

Bob
Used a couple of 'similar artist' search engines in the past, though. They've actually worked fairly well.

@Bob I happen to really, really like cover songs in general to begin with, so it works well for me

Bob
4:35 PM
remember that wifi effectively shares the same medium as every other radio transmitting device in the area (unlike wired, which has its own cable)

my method fails if all the songs you like came out in 2013, though
few brand new songs have covers on Spotify due to copyright etc

Bob
@somequixotic eh, not that recent :P

@somequixotic Then assume the scenario where I live far from civilization, yet have internet access. Deducting all the noise causing factors, what speed gain will I get?

frankly it's amazing that wifi works at all, the resource (the spectrum) is so polluted, and low noise spectrum is a precious commodity... humans always being irresponsible with their finite resources, like oil... and then, we have the audacity to add whole new applications of the wifi spectrum in recent years, like Miracast, WiDi and increased bandwidth of Bluetooth 4.0

Bob
@somequixotic well, it's technically unregulated below a certain level of power
you could blast full noise on the whole band up to that level and there's nothing anyone could do

4:39 PM
@Boris_yo if the internet connection on the WAN side of the router were, for all intents and purposes, "unlimited" transfer rate (or at least so high that it eclipses the router's max line speed for wifi), and you're far away from noise, you might get around 45-50 Mbps on a 54 Mbps router... closer to 52-53 Mbps on UDP IPv4 with large packets, closer to 45 Mbps for TCP, worse for IPv6

Bob
(contrast the illegality of jamming mobile phones, GPS, etc, because they broadcast on regulated frequencies)

@Bob 2.4 GHz is regulated though, in the sense that the FCC (at least in the US) limits the max TX power on it so that you can't e.g. have a wifi hotspot transmitting across an entire country

Bob
@somequixotic yea, beloow a certain level (of power)
hit enter too early on that one

you don't have to have a license to use a WiFi device, but you do have to run "certified" devices that are required to operate in a way that they don't allow the user to broadcast outside the unlicensed spectrum, or with a TX power beyond regulated power

@somequixotic 500mW max?

4:42 PM
I don't know if there's a regulated band except for like, whatever the lowest possible electromagnetic frequencies are
technically you could emit a single photon with the energy of 1 Hz and the FCC couldn't prevent you from doing that... (of course I don't know how you would; something tells me you'd need it to be very cold)

Bob
@Boris_yo depends on the country

@Boris_yo I started with utterly, but that was not as much fun

Bob
@somequixotic hm. I need to read up more on that :P
>

Maximum transmitter output power, fed into the antenna, is 30 dBm (1 watt).

Maximum Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) is 36 dBm (4 watt).
You can obtain the EIRP by simply adding the transmit output power, in dBm, to the antenna gain in dBi (if there is loss in the cable feeding the antenna you may subtract that loss).
that's the US

also, the visible light spectrum isn't very regulated either, hehe
FCC: "you can't shine that flashlight here!!"

Bob
@somequixotic oh yes it is

Bob
here it's illegal to have a laser pointer >5mW on you (or was it 1mW?)

@Bob oh, right

@somequixotic If I put receiving device next to my 54Mbps router, I get 18Mbps.

well lasers also emit ionizing radiation of various quantities when they generate their beam, so that makes sense
@Boris_yo polarization?

I assume because it is merged

4:46 PM
@somequixotic Polarization is fine.

@Boris_yo read up on the impact of directionality and polarization on WiFi -- it can significantly attenuate a signal, and on some devices it's so bad as to make it useless when you hold it in certain orientations

Bob
@somequixotic actually, it's cause idiots pointed them at planes during landing
@somequixotic also see: my laptop
it's like an iphone 4 -_-
the wifi antenna goes around the screen
the screen has a metal backing
if I face the back of the screen towards the wifi AP, suddenly, massive latency and packet loss
who designed this shit

@Bob true that! but we also have regulations here on the maximum output power of lasers long before kids pointed them at planes, and that's mainly a safety thing because of the radiation
you have to get a permit to operate a large / powerful laser and have all kinds of shielding and such

@somequixotic I think I tried different orientations and rate was same.

Bob
@somequixotic ya, but we're talking diode lasers here
not even going into gas/solid/whatever
diode lasers aren't particularly powerful
(also, I don't think they emit ionising radiation? except maybe blue/uv ones)

4:51 PM
@Bob unless you have millions of them combining their laser beams together into an increasingly powerful blast... if you ever played Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (was it 1 or 2?...), they showed the internals of the Death Star, and basically it's thousands of moderately powerful beams (lasers, I guess) that reflect off mirrors and combine into one huge beam

even in the movie you could see the "final" 8 or 12 or whatever lasers combining into the final blast

Bob
fuck you, google
stupid redirect links
:\
I just searched for ionising radiation/diode lasers. didn't even put a non in there

Dude, sleep.

@Gowtham I have an idea :D Let's only respond to Bob by telling him "sleep", until he does so

Bob
4:54 PM
-_-

@Bob sleep

Bob
you do know this isn't going to work

In the movie the laser beams also changed course when they melted into one big ray.

@somequixotic yess

@Bob sleep

4:55 PM
Shitty punks love to point lasers at people when if pointed at eyes, represents risk of blindness.

!! tell bob sleep

@Gowtham Command sleep does not exist.

Which is about as realistic as the rest :)

@Bob sleep

!!say Bob sleep

@somequixotic Bob sleep

!! /learn sleep "SLEEP GODAMNIT"

@Gowtham Command sleep learned

!!sayto Bob sleep

@somequixotic @Bob sleep
