How can you look at those on an unbounded interval?
I saw that the first hermite polynomials were, 1, 1-x^2, and those diverges. I guess it is only me who is confused.

It is people like Jonas that make me think I need to stop doing math because really he represents the majority of math people pretty well. The people who laugh at you for asking a question in class because they are naturally good at math and have to put very little effort into succeeding in class

I`ve never seen Jonas do that?

@Jordan shut up, please. Don't be miserable
@N3buchadnezzar he never did

He told me I should drop out of school because I had to take calc 1 twice

@Jordan So, why care?

12:03 PM
@Jordan I agree with the sentiment but please mind your language :)

@N3buchadnezzar I see now that I''ve forgotten many of these things. But it seems that Legendre polys are orthog on [-1,1], unless I misread about them

Your fellow mathematicians really seem to mind it.

@mixedmath Thanks I will look into those =)

@badp: rather really mind it when applied to users of this chat. Especially when the first time didn't tell anything Jordan

12:05 PM
@OrigamiRobot You don't seem to be affected by the song in the slightest

@OrigamiRobot Bmo looks like a calculator :D

@Jordan: you still have cosine in the denominator here so how would you tell me that you fixed that?
@badp: when the message is flagged, is it always that 5-6 moderators come to a room?

@Ilya It shows it to all 10kers.

Yep, everybody on chat with 10k reputation on all sites gets a bubble in a corner of their avatar next to the textbox

How can one see who are moderators ? =)

12:07 PM
Mods' names are in blue on chat

bah, too slow.

@N3buchadnezzar Or on a simpler note, I believe 2t + 3 and 5t2 + t − 17/9 are orthog on -1,1 too
their names are in blue

@OrigamiRobot so there are so little flagged messages?
@Wipqozn :D

@Ilya In here anyways.

EEEk!

12:07 PM
@Ilya It's like the reply notification, but in a different color and corner of your avatar

Hides my dirty magazines, and dead rabbits

@badp I am charging a cell phone. It's concentration, not anger.

Colors vary from site to site

@badp I saw that a couple of times - but I thought it only refers to a room where you're currently in. Because it was too rare for the whole SE network, I think :)

@Wipqozn ...turtle joke

12:09 PM
@Ilya I think it shows first to people in the very room to allow people to take "local decisions" based on each room's standards

@N3buchadnezzar DEAD RABBITS !!!

@mixedmath Weighted against what?

but I'm not quite certain about that

@badp: thanks for the thought :)

(It's a conjecture, there's no proof.)

12:09 PM
@N3buchadnezzar trivial weight

@badp still, it clarifies

I know I forgot to square the last one, but still they are not the same. What am I missing ? ..

When I interpret orthog, I want $\int_{-1}^1 fg w(x) dx = 0$

Sorry for the confusion...

where f, g are the two fns, w(x) is the weight fn
is that what you meant?

12:12 PM
I was actually looking for a orthonormal set...
Blames my english, and hides in a corner

@N3buchadnezzar set?

oh - about that

@N3buchadnezzar ...in a corner with dead magazines and dirty rabbits
@BenjaminLim an advice would be: do analysis, not algebra :)

12:14 PM
niet @Ilya

My work here is done.

$\langle f,g\rangle=0\,,\,\langle g,g\rangle = \langle f,f\rangle = 1$
No idea what that is called... =(

@BenjaminLim I read that earler, and it reminded me of my first few math talks. I tend to try to make a very welcoming environment and encourage lots of questions. I usually even try to get people to be willing to interrupt me (for smallish audiences). That way, I worry less about my speed. I tend to talk too fast too, and this way I'll have a quick reminder if I do.
But everyone does it differently.

@N3buchadnezzar do you need to find only 2 such functions?

My only common bit is that anything important should be written out fully, whether via a slide or on a blackboard. This way, all the people who are a bit behind won't be left further behind because they weren't hanging on every word. When I go to talks (that I might understand), I try to work through parts or justify things to myself. Then I have to catch up a bit. It's really nice if there's a clear map for me to do that.

12:18 PM
@Ilya yes! I have already found that if $w(x) = \frac{2}{\pi}$ and $C[0,\pi]$ then sine and cosine works. But I have not been able to find other functions with these properties..

Speaking of "Do analysis, not algebra" - I think there's a handy advantage to analysts. Because during talks, no one really wants to see exactly why whatever terrible estimate or hideous inequality gives such and such a result, so you can brush all those hard details aside. But with algebra, people seem so eager to apply whatnot idea and such and such a form to justify what's said. ;p
tongue a bit in cheek, I suppose

@BenjaminLim In my opinion, the most important thing to remember is never talk down to your audience.

Deppends on how high the stage is. HAHAHAHAH.... Hides the corner again

with dead magazines and dirty rabbits?

YAK
Please reoepn the question
@skullpatrol: hi

@YAK Why care? You have the answer...

YAK
Do any of the guys know how to crack GRE now a days

I just find it hilarious how people like Jonas assume anyone who has trouble with math just needs to try and do their homework and work at it, like I have never tried that before

@Ilya The green 4k Didier is the same as the grey high-rep did.

By far the worst part of math is puting up with people like Jonas

@YAK Duh. PIE is not a number. PIE is a language.

@Jordan Well have a good laugh and move on.

12:34 PM
I don't let people talk down to me, I usually like to put them in their place first
If you don't defend yourself like that you just invite more attacks

Why care here?
We are on the internet, remember?

the internet is just as real of a form of communication as anything else, the sentiment is the same

Only in YOUR mind.

Why do you say that the internet is just as real of a form of communication as anything else, the sentiment is the same?

@Jordan Gosh. Someone's not getting jokes.
Here's a whoosh for you.

@Jordan Stop picking on Jonas pal :(

I just hope people like Jonas get banned from this site
Because talking down to people isn't really useful on a site like this

ELIZA is a computer program and an early example of primitive natural language processing. ELIZA operated by processing users' responses to scripts, the most famous of which was DOCTOR, a simulation of a Rogerian psychotherapist. Using almost no information about human thought or emotion, DOCTOR sometimes provided a startlingly human-like interaction. ELIZA was written at MIT by Joseph Weizenbaum between 1964 and 1966. When the "patient" exceeded the very small knowledge base, DOCTOR might provide a generic response, for example, responding to "My head hurts" with "Why do you say your h...

12:39 PM
@Jordan You might get banned first.

@Jordan I bet you'll be banned much faster

I'll take that bet

When ELIZA didn't know how to respond, it would simply prepend a "Why do you say..." to your lines.

@Ilya The one who "discovered" the closed forms of some newtonian DE`s
I recall there was a lot of fuzz about on the site a few days ago.

@Jordan dreaming?

@N3buchadnezzar Maybe he's reading some dead magazines and playing with dirty rabbits :D

Hi @ClarkKent

@skullpatrol Hi!

user19161
I came here after getting a flag.

@ClarkKent It was me "I surrender" waves white flag :D

user19161
@skullpatrol I notice that females tend to flag more in SE chat rooms.

@ClarkKent How observant of you Homes ;-)

@MattN really what you need is a "general reference" close reason.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 :) duplicates works well

12:53 PM
Not quite.

What the bloody holy cow monkey is going on here?

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Close "general" questions in mathematics?

Gauß.

"Duplicate" means, this crap will stick around forever. "Gen ref" would mean, you can kill it off for good.

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 well, if a person cannot just google something - what can we do

user19161
12:53 PM
@JonasTeuwen Nothing. Jordan said something, someone flagged it and I came to take a look.

@Ilya exactly.
You have not studied mathematics to google stuff for people.
That's what you study physics for.
4

Haha.
@ClarkKent Was it interesting?

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 No, that's what you study computer science for.

@ClarkKent oh, how boring. You just repeated his joke

user19161
@JonasTeuwen I think he called you shit or something, but I can't recall.

12:55 PM
Oh, right.

Who starred "That's what you study physics for."?

A physicist. Who googles stuff for people for a living.

user19161
@Ilya No, physics not equals computer science. You are so interesting!

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 you're too fast!

user19161
@MattN Not me, I don't do stars.

12:56 PM
@ClarkKent do you find me interesting? still thinking I'm a female?

3 stars? Seriously?
Whatever.

It has been a very long time since I've felt insulted :-(.

user19161
@Ilya No, I think you are male but I think skull is female.

@MattN if that's not enough, I can pin it for two weeks.

@JonasTeuwen I can try if you like... : )

12:56 PM
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 do me a favour

@MattN Na, you know too much.

@MattN come'on - I've added 2 more people from this room to my ignore list - and you care about a starred message?

Not that I will feel insulted, but I'm a bit... worried what you will say 8-).

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 No thanks, it's ok, I don't think it's funny at all. I was just wondering what sort of person would star it.

@MattN I would star it. I like to star nonsense.

user19161
12:57 PM
@JonasTeuwen Better to be abused by people on the internet than in real life.

@JonasTeuwen I would obviously not use anything I know.

@JonasTeuwen and.... here you go! nonsense!

@MattN Then you will fail in insulting me!

@MattN looks like you misunderstand the purpose of stars.
A star doesn't mean "this is funny".

@ClarkKent Well, yes, but in real life it is usually harder.

12:58 PM
@MattN that's not the right way of living. You should learn stuff and use it!

user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Stars are for lighting up the sky at night.

@Ilya Well well. Soon there will be no one left to add to my ignore list...

@MattN But then at least people stfu!

@MattN I wish they could be banned

Why? Where would we be without some doerak's that make things funny?

12:59 PM
@Ilya : P Where's the challenge here?

Then we would be working all day, can you imagine that...?

@Ilya Me too but they can't. But maybe we could bully them til they leave?

@JonasTeuwen I don't add people to the ignore list if they are stupid but funny

So funny stupid people are okay?

sure, they're usually not agressive

1:00 PM
Funny because they are stupid or they are funny and stupid?

Stupid and true.

@JonasTeuwen Either, probably.

well, it's hard to distinguish

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Beware: The owls are not what they seem.

Or MC and emcee.

MC = Markov Chain!

Maybe it an abbreviation of the Dutch "okiedokie!".

user19161
1:02 PM
@JonasTeuwen Is that a Dutch word?

@JonasTeuwen No, it's an abbreviation of "oll korrect".

user19161
Okiedokie sounds so sweet. I would love a girl to say that to me every day.

@ClarkKent Not an official one, but some people use it.

A: Where did the term "OK/Okay" come from?

CharlieAccording to the OED, it's an initialism of oll (or orl) korrect, first seen in 1839, something apparently quite funny. It was reinforced by another initialism OK from the nickname of president Martin Van Buren, Old Kinderhook during his electoral campaign. The verb was null-derived from this aro...

@Nimza how are you?

@Ilya nothing interesting, and you?

@Ilya 8-).

@Ilya Calling anyone "stupid" is an insult.

Enemies? I doubt it. I'm OK with everybody.
@skullpatrol If I call myself stupid am I insulting myself?
If you feel insulted about that, I guess you are having doubts about your own intellectual capacities...

@JonasTeuwen Well you're not exactly building your self esteem :D

I don't have any problems with that. More like, hah, I'm so stupid. Good!

It's the original name.

In fact, it's quite the sense of it :)

I take it to mean "he who finishes shitting".

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 well, I tried to avoid s-word

1:26 PM
@JonasTeuwen Sorry : )

@Ilya that's beside the point.

@MattN that was insulting. me neither!

My point is that it's not "the thing that makes you" but rather "the thing that does"

@Ilya Yes, sorry : ) But I know he likes both of you, too : )

@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 oh, that I've missed
