8:02 PM
@DylanMoreland Thanks :-) It took a while to sort out how to show what needed showing.

@robjohn You truly are the mean square of all bounty hunters :D encrypted-tbn0.google.com/…

@tb what am I missing; why should Dylan not be here?

@robjohn this.

@tb Ah! :-) the siren call of the modular forms
I come back to see a deleted comment :-(

@robjohn a picture containing an underground bounty hunter skull.
At least it wasn't animated...

8:11 PM
@tb :-)

@skullpatrol what?

Nothing, just feelin unappreciated...
@robjohn BTW you missed all the action concerning Jordan calling Jonas "Hitler."

@skullpatrol I was not here. I did indeed miss it.

@robjohn The room was flooded by mods ...

8:19 PM
@robjohn: I don't know if anything's possible here, but maybe you want to give it a go: math.stackexchange.com/q/152062/5363

@robjohn And Ilya wanted me suspended for my chat with Yak about the 10 trillion and 50th digit of $/pi$

@skullpatrol suspended? I will have to read back on that.
@tb The division by zero in the integral worries me.

@robjohn yes, it doesn't look nice. I only played around with it for a few minutes, so I don't know. I had no idea.

Long live $\pi$ :D

8:34 PM
hi all
@skullpatrol i prefer $\zeta(3)$.

Hi guys!
In about 11 hours I'm off to London!

Hi, Jonas

from now on in all my papers i'm going to say assume $x \neq arthur$.

8:36 PM
is x the characteristic of your field?

1/arthur is undefined :D

@tb seeing that i mostly look at elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ i guess it could be.
the set $\{arthur\}$ is a field.
albeit a trivial one.

Are you calling arthur "trivial"?

not really arthur but rather his field structure
Asaf ftw.
my colleague had a great laugh.

arthur/arthur can be anybody

8:41 PM
Are you trolling me at 1100, skullpatrol? Even before I had some goddamn pizza?

@JonasTeuwen Hey, that's cool. What are you going to do in London?

@MattN I don't know.

@JonasTeuwen +1

@JonasTeuwen There are a few good restaurants, I think.

I hope so.

8:43 PM
@JonasTeuwen did you see asaf's reply to this?

@JonasTeuwen So, holiday, not a conference?

@MattN Mwa, talk with some people.

@JonasTeuwen Have you been to London before?

7 years ago.

skullpatrol is not bounded by space-time

8:46 PM
I did nothing today. Slightly scary given that I'm extremely slow. But I didn't get enough sleep last night : ( And sleeping during the day makes me feel like chewed by a cow and then spat out.

Just don't sleep at all.

Right. I'm mentally incapacitated* if I get less than 7 hours of sleep. And you tell me not to sleep?
*) even more than usually I mean : )

Why did god damn your pizza?

@tb What are you up to?

@MattN Really, you get used to it.

8:51 PM
But you have to work at getting "used to it."

Actually you have to do nothing...

@JonasTeuwen Then I'd have too much time to do stuff. I'm too lazy for that.

@MattN Well, just drink and chat.

If you call trying to stay awake "doing nothing."

Good job you're not a career advisor or a shrink : )

9:01 PM
@MattN what do you mean?

@tb Nothing in particular, just making conversation : / Like: "Oh, I'm just sitting in front of my computer looking at this chat" or "Nothing, just watching a film" or ya know...

@MattN I see... I'm trying to motivate myself for looking at the maths of an answer I've been badgered into. I just posted a comment clarifying a few minor points /me whines

@tb Someone I know would say: "You should stop whining and use the time for thinking." Poor you : / heads out to find out which comment
About Lazard sheaves. Is that like commutative algebra, in that you also don't know anything about it? : )

Don't say that; t.b. knows everything, or eventually will know everything.

@MattN I don't know. Maybe. It's easy to toss around words. It's not so easy to fill them with meaning and understanding.

9:18 PM
@tb True.

Man, I work from 9AM to 2AM. I wonder if I would drop dead soon! 8-).
(incl dinner)

dinner drops dead soon, too?

I hope only after I have dropped dead myself.

That depends on what you mean by "soon."

I love group dinners when there is a guest. Department pays!

9:20 PM
I didn't know you were so hard-working.

I had some excellent things. Nice wine etc.
@MattN Sometimes I'm "broken" for a couple of weeks and do nothing.

@JonasTeuwen A good friend of mine almost went completely broken.
Had something called post-viral fatigue.

That sucks.

He's got his own company and works his arse off like mad.
Sorry I missed that.
But he's back now.
No. I don't think so.

No problem then!

9:22 PM
He disappeared i.e. he hid away at his parents' for I don't know how long and stopped doing anything.
I can relate to that.
(Not the going back to parents' place)
I had a similar experience. Not as bad though.

No problem! You seem to be okay now.

Yes. I guess mostly thanks to my girlfriend.

Nice, she sounds like a great girl.
I can also recommend getting completely broken. Then it is way easier to fix it!

Yeah. I don't think I'd find another one putting up with my crap for this long and even enjoying herself.
@JonasTeuwen I don't think so.

Women cannot handle me.
Or I cannot handle women...

9:27 PM
@JonasTeuwen I was just about to say...

Which is it?

It's supposed to be the other way around. : )

Both.

I guess.

Maybe it is neither.

9:28 PM
@JonasTeuwen I have this neck thing since my screw up. Work and study at the same time wasn't such a good idea.
:4790268 Sounds like a good idea : )

8-).
I can handle myself pretty well nowadays.
But I would not be able to handle you. You're female right?

@JonasTeuwen Skullpatrol or me?

Skullpatrol.
If female, you could be handled. I think.
But you are like macho man. More macho than me!

I think females are a bloody pain in the neck. Males are much easier to handle.

I agree.

9:32 PM
My neck hurts :D

@JonasTeuwen Me too. I haven't done any work since last July. But I'm going to work again in autumn.

Great.

Yep. I'm a spoiled brat. I wonder how I deserve this : )

Visit NL before that! We'll have a drink.
I'll have multiple.

@JonasTeuwen We were planning to do that now. But after Iceland I'll have to hurry up to be able to finish my stuff (if I manage which is not so clear at the moment). Then end of September is the next available date.
Drinks sounds good.
@JonasTeuwen Actually, females are quite simple too.

9:35 PM
Because in 2013 I'm in bloody Australia! Visit me there.

@JonasTeuwen Ok, will do. Either from Canada or Japan.
: )

Great.
@tb @MattN Do any one of you know that if you want to write "applications in operator theory..." or whatever in a grant request, if you have to put capital letters as in Operator Theory?

@tb Will you visit me? (wherever I'll be)
@JonasTeuwen I don't know.
If you say know Matt will miss you too much.

@MattN The Chicago Manual of Style states that you should not capitalize scientific disciplines.

9:51 PM
@JonasTeuwen Interesting. I thought they should be capitalised.
I should go to bed.
Good night, xxx

@MattN Ding ding!

10:37 PM
What the bloody monkey are well-bounded operators?

@PaulSlevin Right, yes.
So a functional calculus on bounded subsets of the real line eh?

I've no idea I just used google haha , and it was defined in there

11:22 PM
What is the easiest/quickest way to write out matrices using LaTeX?
Googling produces a few options, none of which I like.

using /array i think
let me find an example
o
you can use the matrix environment
i.e. \ begin{matrix} then type the code, then \end{matrix}
$$
(\begin{matrix}
a_{11} & a_{12} & a_{13}
\end{matrix})
\times
(\begin{matrix}
b_{11} \\
b_{21} \\
b_{31}
\end{matrix})
=
(\begin{matrix}0\end{matrix})
$$

Thanks!

I;m not sure of the details
but you can probably google stuff on the matrix environment

11:53 PM
anyone here understand conjugacies
