yeah, because that supports a side in an argument.

its not a very big deal

@heather yeah, but what's the actual cost to the person trying to 'game' the system?

but if it can be fixed, it should
I mean, why not
upvotes in comments are not meaningless
I really don't get it. Are you people trying to argue that a comment with 40+ upvotes will have the same impact - credibility and visibility-wise - than one with no upvotes at all? That they are to all purposes equivalent? I know that in theory, they should be equivalent. But in practice, do you really think they are? — AccidentalFourierTransform May 15 at 20:07

@EmilioPisanty none to the person trying to game it, currently

9:02 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform I was going to use that as evidence that your claim that it's "not a very big deal" is pretty shaky

@heather so this is someone making new accounts out of the blue, with zero privileges, and using those to upvote comments?

awesome video ^

... and the thinking is that the multiple repeated account creation from a single address won't set off any flags on the spam + sock-puppet detection algorithms?

so you are telling me that, if it was actually very easy to fix, you wouldn't do it anyway?

9:07 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform if it was a one-dev-day think, sure
I'm just unconvinced that this thing is actually exploitable

it is potentially exploitable
I dont think anyone has ever tried to use this method
mostly because I imagine very few people knew about it

@AccidentalFourierTransform is it, though?
it involves multiple accounts coming from the same address

as long as it is not a by-desing feature, it is a flaw

that's an immediate red flag for the sock-puppet detector

well, it turns out it is not something easy to fix
now we know that
but it might have been the case that it was actually a 5min fix
there was a lot of negativity when S.C. posted that on Meta
it made no sense

9:09 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform as in?
All I see are people asking for evidence that this is an actual problem

everybody telling him to stop wasting everybody's time

i.e. helping improve the question

and that it was a stupid request

@JohnRennie Haha, cool! You may also like to have a look at this lecture by Hawking. He argues that we say that time essentially begins at the big bang because the entire universe we are causally disconnected to whatever might have happened before the big bang. So maybe that is what you meant when you said that we call it the beginning because it is a singularity.
http://www.hawking.org.uk/the-beginning-of-time.html

and that upvotes in comments mean nothing
and that nobody cares about them
and he got more downvotes than upvotes during the first hour

9:11 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform S.C. has a record of responding badly to polite requests to provide evidence for his/her claims.

I dont know that
all I know is what I saw there

@AccidentalFourierTransform regardless
it's at play there

it should not

all there is is: show that it's an actual problem

reasonable requests dont necessarily come from reasonable users
there is no need to show that it is an actual proble
as I said before, if it is not a by-desing feature, it should be fixed (if possible)

9:14 PM
meh
so much more stuff worth fixing before this

I agree
but a post raising a flag should not be received with negativity just because there are other things that are more urgent and important
a simple "thanks, we'll look into it whenever we have the time" would have sufficed

@AccidentalFourierTransform a post raising a potential problem being met with requests to show it's actually a problem isn't negativity
and, in any case, as I said, the question completely ignores the sockpuppet detector
if nothing else, it would leave a scorching black mark on the logs

whatever, its not a big deal
i just felt bad for S.C.

@AccidentalFourierTransform yeah, obviously
I mean, there's just one liter of ink on that thread
=P

he was just trying to help, and I didnt like the hostility of the responses
(the hostilities were perhaps in my head)
I mean, as I told Daniel
May 15 at 20:25, by AccidentalFourierTransform
I dont know, perhaps Im just focusing on the comments that I found unreasonable

9:18 PM
eh, I thought people were taking it a little less seriously than they should have
people were literally saying that comment votes don't matter
which was almost like they were trying to be a jerk

@heather maybe because people are more acquainted with the sockpuppeting problem and the defenses against it
PSE doesn't see it much

their attitude was condescending

but SO is a programming site with a lot of users and there's a lot of temptation for some people to code 'emselves up some sockpuppets

@Sid Well, someone says here "I'll be in Santa Barbara". Then I say "Oh, cool, here's my phone number. We should get burritos".
Hi, everybody.

9:25 PM
hello

@DanielSank hi Dan
in some relevant news, I'm currently 66rep away from my goal
::grin::

@EmilioPisanty What happens then?

@DanielSank He's not even joking

Why would I joke?

9:28 PM
Because you're a goof

@EmilioPisanty I don't get it.

your reputation
his offered bounties

::grin::

Oh ffs.
You wonderful bastard.

@DanielSank hahahaha

9:29 PM
@DanielSank Get rekd

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You know what though, I rek you all because I still have the highest fraction of accepted answers.
::grins::

@DanielSank yeah, oh well

(At least, for people who actually write lots of answers)

I rek you all because I'm failing my physics course
No, wait
Dammit

9:30 PM
(I think you have to put a cutoff of around 50 or something for me to win that)
@BernardoMeurer awwwww

the stated goal has now been updated to getting the EP Offered Rep user onto the first page of the users-by-reputation table
should be another 2k or so

The only second I considered learning Physics was when JR trolled me by saying you could sell rep points for money

@BernardoMeurer y u speak oztrayan?

@EmilioPisanty Hum?

> Rek is Australian slang for the word wreck. Same as Rekt meaning wrecked.

9:33 PM
I didn't know it was from down under
I thought it was just edgy af

@EmilioPisanty Why you have so much rep?

@DanielSank I have no idea

Fair enough.
Yo send me some more music. I always like your music.

because I spend much too much time on this site?
hmmmm

That one crazy album was so good it almost killed me.

9:35 PM
@DanielSank you seen Systema Solar yet?

I don't remember what it was called now...
@EmilioPisanty Negative.

@DanielSank Cumbiakistán

yep
damn it's so good

My brain can barely take it.

9:36 PM
and let the YouTube mix take it from there

cool
How come when I Google "Cumbakinstan" I get a bunch of shady results?
Shady like if I talk about the results here I'll be banned >.>

@DanielSank 'cos you're mispelling it, maybe?
that version doesn't get anything
the -instan I imagine is an obvious typo
I do see some pretty shady stuff from cumbakistan
oh yeah, I see why

^ yep
well, yeah...
still

if bakistan is a vague synonym for Pakistan

:: googles ::

9:39 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform would advise against
but anyway

:: blushes ::

It was a typo, @EmilioPisanty.

@DanielSank =P
no, seriously, though

wut?

9:43 PM
how aware are you of what cumbia is?

zero

@DanielSank ok, excellent
there's a lot of cool music I can show you, then

Reading Wikipedia.

lolz
sounds about right
all of it fantastic
steer clear of cumbia villera, though

Why?

9:51 PM
@DanielSank not as good as the rest
more along the lines of reggaetón than anything else
anyways
if you want something more specific I can provide a tour
but the vids above are good starting points

I am reading the map correctly that Brazil and Argentina do not partake in this particular musical genre?

@DanielSank mostly, yes
with the exception of cumbia villera
which is a lot of this kinda stuff, not particularly thrilling to my taste

@EmilioPisanty eeeeech
Yeah
