10:01 PM
(legacy Skyrim is only capable of allocating 4 GB of memory, 2 GB before patch 1.3.1; Skyrim SE is 64-bit and therefore not subject to the same constraints)
I think one of the challenges Bethesda ran into is making Skyrim SE "bug-compatible" with legacy Skyrim, because existing mods need to be portable.

@allquixotic best not get involved

Furthermore, SkyUI is no longer under active development so a port to Skyrim SE is unlikely. techraptor.net/content/…

@noitsbecky this is the problem with living in insecure temporary accommodation
you need to get yourself a proper flat/house

@allquixotic No, it's Becky :-P

10:28 PM
Stock Windows from a CD doesn't come with decoders right?

Bob
@MarkYisri what "decoders"?

@Bob sorry! DVD decoders

Bob
@MarkYisri Ah. Not as of Windows 8, I believe.
Not unless you got the media centre pack.

This is XP

AotS worth $10 (Steam sale)? Not exactly an RTS fan.
(I don't think this machine will cope with it well; Kepler will run the game but lacks full DX12 support. The game tends to favor AMD hardware.)

Bob
10:30 PM
@MarkYisri XP... probably does? But maybe not, idk.
XP is old enough it might be before DVD codecs were supported natively.
Oh, apparently not.
@bwDraco Depends. They've updated it a lot, but at release the AI opponents were insanely hard (esp. in single-player)
It's a fun little game to have PvE skirmishes on, though :P
Worth it ultimately depends on, e.g., how many hours of play you expect to get.
@bwDraco DX12 doesn't really help that much by itself. But the game really needs a fairly beefy CPU (and GPU, but you can set a lower res and quality instead).
What were your specs again?

I have serious doubts the game will run acceptably at 1080p.

Bob
@bwDraco You can always run it at, say, 720

Core i7-4800MQ (Haswell 4C/8T @ 2.7-3.7 GHz). GTX 780M (1536 CUDA cores in 8 of 8 SMXs on Kepler GK104 @ 771-849 MHz; 4 GB GDDR5 @ 5 Gbps on 256-bit bus).
The GPU will be the bottleneck.
@Bob The game requires minimum 1080p resolution.
I suspect the UI will not work well at lower resolutions...

Bob
@bwDraco Does it now?

> 1920x1080 Display Resolution or Higher

Bob
10:40 PM
Remind me to check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure I ran it at 1600x900 on a laptop before
@bwDraco Possibly, but not necessarily.

I've never been great at RTS games.

Bob
When there's giant armies roaming around... well, my i7-2600 cried

I don't know if it's worth a shot now...

Bob
@bwDraco Entirely up to you. But Steam does refund thing if you play less than 2 hours, so you can at least download it and run the benchmarks.

I don't want to wind up requesting a refund.

10:43 PM
@OliverSalzburg Yes, that must have been it.

@Bob That's 2C/4T. I think this laptop will perform better here...
(AotS expects 4C/4T at minimum and performs best with 8C/16T)

@NotAdminDave Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately a bit late, since Dog is dead. But tbh it went away pretty quick.
I've got a pretty decent immune system. By pretty decent I mean superb.
That's the fourth disease I've caught off other people at a hostel that only affected me 1/4 as much as it did the person who poisoned me

Bob
@bwDraco Uh, no. An i7-2600 had 4 physical cores and 8 hardware threads.

I'm seeing conflicting information...
I'll just check ARK.

Bob
@bwDraco I'm seeing a chip sitting on my desk...

10:47 PM
I think the "blood that didn't look like blood" vomit might have been the result of mixing banana and vanilla smoothie with a blueberry and apple smoothie, a burger, and some salami.

Yeah. It's 4C/8T.
This laptop will not run this game well.

Bob
@bwDraco ...my i7-7700k does alright.
Pretty good actually, no noticeable slowdowns.

@Bob Other DVDs work fine.

Bob
10:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek and @allquixotic run it on older (Skylake? And I think @JourneymanGeek is still on Ivy?). And it's fine for them.

5 mins ago, by bwDraco
(AotS expects 4C/4T at minimum and performs best with 8C/16T)

Bob
@MarkYisri other DVDs? y'know, this would be much easier if you provided more context...

Hey @Bob, how's the new PC?

Bob
@noitsbecky Pretty good :)

Also Dog forgot to mention before he died love you too @allquixotic

Bob
10:50 PM
Thanks to everyone here for the advice

7700K + GTX 1080, man I'm jealous

@Bob Software DVDs, printer drivers, Lion King movie, audio Cds

I'm aiming to build a system of similar caliber soon. I'm just waiting on home renovations and new furniture.

So asshat who stole my card checked out of hostel this morning and did an exactly 20 pounds contactless transaction at 12:36 at Tesco store in the middle of town and 1406 did the same at Sainsbury's by the central train station.

Bob
@MarkYisri Those don't require the DVD video codec.

10:52 PM
Given the hostel ID's everyone who checks in and the police have exact times he was at two stores, and the fact the behaviour smacks of profesionnal thief, I suspect the police will be onto him soon enough

@Bob I thought movies need that.

Bob
There's the DVD disc format (and filesystem, usually UDF) for general data, and then there's the DVD codec for videos in a very specific format.

@Bob if the computer doesn't even detect the disc (but it works in other computers) does that come before the codec?

@Bob That codec is just MPEG-2

Bob
@noitsbecky o.O
reported stolen yet?

10:53 PM
The container is probably the more "specific" business

Will AotS crash or fail to run on a 2C/2T or 2C/4T processor?

@Bob Yeah, hence how I got the transaction locations and times off my bank to pass onto the cops

Bob
@noitsbecky well, technically the important (read: annoying) part is CSS...

No PIN needed for the contactless payments?

@Bob Eh, yeah, that

Bob
10:54 PM
but yea the encoding itself is just an MPEG variant. bleh.

@Hennes Nup, just touch the card to the reader. Or hover it over without touching

Bob
@bwDraco No, it won't, AFAIK.

Yuck. Sounds vulnerable without a thief involved.

Apparently contactless fraud is low enough that the banks/retailers are willing to just take a hit on the unauthorized ones.

10:55 PM

I tend to take the security view sometimes.

All the way down to 1C/2T.

Less than 1p per 100 pounds is fraudulently spent apparently, i.e. much lower than overall non-contactless card fraud

And the big advantage of credit cards thus far is that it either needed a PIN or a pin+a password

Performance falls off a cliff when the game is given less than eight threads.

Bob
10:56 PM
@MarkYisri You can read the files just fine. You just can't turn the (encrypted, see CSS) data into something your eyes can understand as a video.

@Bob I can't read the files.

Bob
@noitsbecky fake ID, possibly?

@Bob We'll have CCTV and passport/drivers license number once the police turn up

@MarkYisri dead drive

10:57 PM
@Burgi the drive works with other DVD/CDs

Bob
@bwDraco I don't see a cliff there.

Though to be fair, I'm not sure how much effort the police are going to put into tracking down petty theft

Bob
I just see normal performance degradation.

@MarkYisri dead disc

But I figured I'd try considering these kinds of people are the one type completely destroying the hostel culture

10:58 PM
@Burgi disk works in other computers ! :D

@Bob Possible.

Bob
@MarkYisri ...that's just a failed drive or DVD.

But chances are it'll be someone "known to the police" soon if they aren't already...

Bob
or, if it's self-burned and your computer is old enough to be running XP (?!?!), it could even be a DVD-R vs DVD+R thing

I hate to be persistent, but... the drive works with other CDs. The disc works in other computers.

10:59 PM
Evidently he's not very original and doesn't go very far, seeing as the hostel he stole from and both shops he used the stolen cards in are within 0.2 miles of each other

@Bob not self-burned

Bob
@MarkYisri then... what exactly is it?

@Bob the Disney "Inside Out" movie :D

Bob
@MarkYisri And you're sure it's actually a DVD and not BD?
@noitsbecky fail.

@Bob It says DVD on it
but what is a BD?

11:01 PM
Oh it's Chinese new year
Dang

is it a purple dye? some older drives struggled twith them

I'm gonna get flagged and banned again aren't I
Urgh :-(

Bob
@Burgi a purchased DVD should be pressed
unless it's a DSD (Dodgy Street-corner DVD)...
@MarkYisri bluray

@noitsbecky Yup. Be careful :)

@Bob i missed that as i was out putting the frost cover on my car

11:07 PM
Is Ashes of the Singularity NUMA-aware?
(Game uses up to 16 threads; not sure if a 2P server is going to help since Xeon E5 v4 processors are available with up to 22 cores :P)

Package has left the carrier facility

Package has left seller facility and is in transit to carrier
Portland, OR, US
hmmmmm.
...delvery address is in Portland OR
so it's going from OR to WA to FL ... back to OR?
is the US postal system really that convoluted?
wait. why is it taking a detour from NW US to SE US anyway?!

Q: Why is the boot sequence no more visible with a Gainward GTX 1060 Phoenix?

OlafMI have a Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H with a Xeon E3-1230 v3 and a Dell UP2414Q set to use DP 1.2a to get 4K@60 Hz via DisplaPort. With a nVidia GTX 760 the monitor was turning on at boot, in time for me to see the Award logo and to enter the UEFI BIOS. The BIOS is set to "other OS" (vs Windows 8) and ...

I like this question if only because of the hardware involved :)
@JourneymanGeek ^

fastboot?

11:40 PM
Hi to all!
By the way, do you know one good alternative to Evernote?

@Bob >_>
what about it?

15 tabs using 2.0 GB of memory on Firefox Developer Edition with process-per-tab enabled (limit 256 processes for giggles)
(by the time I have that many tabs open, the system will probably be paging to disk)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?

I mean, what's so special about the hardware? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 4k, Dell... :P

11:52 PM
ah
previous gen though I think
Might be SST

Opened 12 more tabs with heavy pages and memory use has ballooned towards 5 GB.

Bob
@bwDraco ...yea, that's borken
how heavy is heavy?
ooh, can you dump your about:memory?
I'm curious now :P

A: ISP cant block my website

DeerSpotterYour ISP blocks port 80 Nothing you can do about this one. You could try calling them to remove the block, but you'll have to get past the level 1 "Can you try rebooting to resolve this problem?" drones and the level 2 "We're not allowed to do that" drones first. More ISP's than not will block...

That question needs some serious love

Bob
@Ramhound you have an extra comma :P
wait, three extra commas
o.O
/nit

On a phone... huge hands.... commas will get added
