@MichaelFrank get boots?

12:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek We have these style cables - cdlnz.com/network-cables/pl200/plc620

@MichaelFrank get the sort with boots
Your users will hate you, you'll probably hate me, but they won't break

The supplier only has that style in Cat6A though :/

ah, you'd probably save money in the long run, when they last longer. Unless your users cut off the boots ;p
@Bob erf. Lots of people spewing garbage about hard drive regeneration tools in that HDD question

Q: Is it possible to gain access to a password-protected WinRAR file without brute-forcing it?

HashimMy reasoning: password-protected WinRar zip files are locally-stored. Therefore, the password - or some key to cracking them - must be locally-stored, too. It strikes me that it'd be much easier to find where that password or key is stored on the machine rather than brute-forcing it - a solution ...

meh question, good answer
Also for the second time in as many minutes...
That's ... not how it works ;p

I guess the OP figures getting into the archive is the same as getting into a club with a whitelist. Get the list, get into the club. In reality it could be closer to something like The Enigma of Amigara Fault.

OP also dosen't get that you don't need a plain text password, only a hash

1:26 AM
Ha... one of our meeting room phones suddenly failed to register with the gateway. I contacted the provider and they wanted to exact time the fault happened.

Q: Remove Un-needed Windows Components

DavidWhen installing Visual Studio, Windows installed a bunch of components along with everything that was already there. Now I uninstalled Visual Studio, but don't know which components I can safely uninstall. How can I determine which I can and can't remove. I'm doing this from Control Panel > Unins...

Alright.. Can I remove .net framework that's a "developer pack"

yanno
I'm half certain linking your own question here gets it closevoted

;-;

Oh, my closevotes are super closevotes

I cry

1:32 AM
It is unclear though

-.-

there's typically a bunch of runtimes with are called visual studio runtimes, and removing them breaks things

Yeah, the Visual C++ Runtimes are needed for basically everything
If you remove a developer pack (or a multi-targeting pack), you'll lose the ability to compile for that platform

tbh, that needs to be in your question
With a screenshot maybe of the add remove screen with an example of those packs visible

Yep, there are a lot of things in that list usually, and currently I'm not sure which you're referring to

1:39 AM
Don't assume we're psysic. That's a 1 megarep privilege ;)

I'm wasted. I could barely post that information

just how many things do you have in programs and features uninstall?
for the most part you can uninstall every item in there, then re-install only nessisary things like Re-distributals needed to run programs when they complain about it. any program that then crashes or fails to operate with things gone, you just find out the dependencies for it and reinstall
There were ways back some to keep stuff like that from happening again.
Trace the installs, with an unistaller program, they will more thourougly uninstall progams and parts and pieces.

That's maybe 1/3 of them
@Psycogeek

Have cloned your system partition, prior to an install:
If you keep a nice tight OS partition, and put your "Data" instead on other disks or partitions, then a "image file" of that system can be made easily and of a managable size.
So you can have images like , Clean Install , Pre - installing some game , preinstalling programs that put a LOT of junk in the registry.

So I should uninstall all of those?

1:51 AM
That's like ~500mb... how small is your HDD?!

@David that is Par for an unmanaged system, and is unlikely to hurt anything. Yes it could be cleaned up, Yes you will probably have to re-install a FEW of the re-distributals

Okay so for now tho, I should clear them

I said you Could clear all of them, meaning you will still be able to boot :-) so yes you could begin to manage them.
But
Back with the backup stuff, If you (even this late) make a Clone , or Clone Image of it, you could reek havoc without thinking, and always bring it back.

Windows wouldn't let me brick it from control panel uninstall... would it?

@David Find out and let us know ;)

1:59 AM
Okay -_-

Managing them, would be to uninstall specific sets , after discovering what they are used for, then possibly re-instaling one reditributable instead of 6 versions.
Some programs install and properly use ONLY the one version, because todays MS system that prevents "dll hell" Each program could use a versioned distributable.
So some programs will use the one installed by other programs, and some other program will in-so-much as crash or error when the special one they wanted is not there.

Gah.... Even more people are asking me to tell them the exact time the meeting room phone failed to register with the gateway. It's a phone in a meeting room... There's not someone in there watching it 24/7.
I don't care if 10mins of data takes an hour to download, fix my bloody phone.

2:22 AM
@David yea you could get a fear of bricking, from uninstalling the wrong things, like MS updates to the OS, they don't always Uninstall correctally. very low likely that you couldn't get all the way into the OS , after removing sub-system parts and pieces

MOST of those look like things you don't need to touch

Welp.
I just uninstalled all of 'em

then your all set , need any more help? i can show you how to remove all your hard drives next :-) Inside joke

Yea i got a question
how can i download more ram ;)

@David if anything breaks shrug
You can probably reinstall them

2:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek any idea why SQL server 2008 wouldn't uninstall?

!!hv
boo
Probably cause you uninstalled all the runtimes.

oh XD

2:53 AM
Hey guys, can anyone help me understand port forwarding, static ip, etc...
I am trying to set up my WD My Cloud with Plex Media Server and allow remote access.
I forwarded my port as per the directions: support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138 - but am not sure how to set up the static IP for the My Cloud device properly (see: support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/…)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ugh.

@jmalais what part of that don't you get?
and actually typically your ip dosen't really change that often on your typical consumer setup

I guess the first part I am not understanding is does static IP vs DHCP mean that the local ip won't change only?

@jmalais this is a static IP in your lan.

@journeymangeek I see, well than the static IP is probably an unnecessary step. That being the case

3:02 AM
but once again typically, even without an IP address reservation on your router, and a static IP, unless something went wrong, this part of your setup would be trivial
I'd be more concerned about the stuff past your router

Where am I going wrong? The port is forwarded, but outside computers can't access it. I disabled DMZ or some setting like that for the Cloud device, wouldn't this allow access to my device from remote?

since your ISP probably uses a dynamic IP or worse, CGN
ah!
What port?

the port is 32400, the default for plex media server

DMZ = send all the data not explicitly forwarded to a specific system.
ah, that port is unlikely to be blocked.

so DMZ essentially means that any data sent to ANY port goes to that device? so therefore that is not what i need
correct?

3:04 AM
are you sure your IP address uis actually routable?

@jmalais What does the Plex settings say about being reachable from outside?

@jmalais if you don't know what it is, you don't typically need it.

this is the help article i need to follow...my modem has limited settings than most I assume so it isn't easy to navigate what i need

What are you running Plex on?

So there is an option to enable a WAN ip address for the device, but that would require me to disable the firewall entirely for that device. What alternatives do I have if that is an option?
@MichaelFrank MyCloud EX2

3:08 AM
Okay, and what is the modem model?

Assuming you give your MyCloud a static IP, eg 192.168.1.100
Step 4 has an option to pick a service, Plex is listed there.

I have done this, forwarded my port.

Punch 32400 into the ShieldsUp! box at grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

I have not chosen a static IP yet, because I don't understand how to make the My Cloud static and not my PC which, when I download that utility is giving me the option for

3:17 AM
The static IP is only local

Bob
If your ISP uses CGN then no amount of local port forwarding will help.

32400
Stealth Unknown Protocol for this port
Unknown Application for this port
are my results
how would i know? my isp is att-uverse

Looks like they do use CGN

Q: How would I test to see if I'm behind carrier grade or regular NAT?

Journeyman GeekInspired by the comments to this answer and its question. Some of my local ISPs are using carrier grade nat, and as someone who occasionally runs his own servers, remote support, it would be highly useful to be able to work out if I, or someone I am trying to help is behind one of these. grumble grumble I wanted a nice cool glass of milk to finish the day at work. I got the milk outta the fridge, about to pour it into a mug so I can stealth it back to my desk when a colleague walks in. I ended up making a hot tea instead. T_T
@JourneymanGeek I like the second answers attempt to justify his much simpler echo of the accepted answer.

Anyone have an HP laptop here? ^

That's a pretty wide range... three years...

this is gonna be fun for my last workplace

then it's fine

@HackToHell does he know how to boil an egg?

12:49 PM
hm
creative cloud broke
again
sigh
?!?! how big is it?
...ow. looks to be about 500-750 MB

1:06 PM
Who even uses Creative Cloud?

@Bob Maybe they Base64 encoded it for transit
@Rahul2001 We do

@OliverSalzburg But... isn't it like literally just overpriced cloud storage?

@Rahul2001 Oh no, it allows you to use the full suite of Adobe software
And you can dynamically assign the licences you have to different users in your organization. And the price is very reasonable IMHO

@OliverSalzburg That's gotta be the first time that someone has called adobe pricing reasonable.

@Rahul2001 Their fixed licenses they had before CC were very expensive. Especially for small companies or individuals
In comparison, the new license model is very nice

1:10 PM
in "comparison" :P

Bob
hm
premiere appears to have lost the youtube preset
and the h.264 encoder
wat

@Rahul2001 my company does

Bob
well that's a pile of shit

in the UK its a 10k fine per machine per copy of software

CC is 50 bucks/month IIRC. If you're using the software professional, that's probably nothing compared to the money you're making using the software

1:13 PM
the plus side is that i get to use my work license at home as long as my work copy is not on at the same time

And it's more affordable than having to pay 1000 for a license for a fixed version
@Burgi Yeah, that's a huge benefit for me as well
And one of the very common issues in the past was with freelancers. Your company would be using CS6, the freelancer only had CS4 or CS5
Now you just lend them a license and you're good to go

as a professional software developer its only ethical that i pay for software that i use because i expect to be paid for the software i create

>_>
@Burgi though its a difference from paying once for a product licence in perpetuity to paying for a licence per month

true

Over not paying at all arrrrrrr

1:18 PM
@Burgi I create free software. Also, that ^

Bob
@JourneymanGeek in perpetuity with an old version :\

@Rahul2001 the principle still stands

@Bob Only because they don't offer lifetime licenses for the new version

the cost of software for students is stupidly high

1:20 PM
@Bob which is often good enough

For me it's actually a lot easier and faster to just buy a software than to figure out where to get a "free copy" :P

or you can only pay for the months that you use it

though my workplace before last stuck to an older version cause they didn't have a new version of a mission critical plugin
@OliverSalzburg its trivial, but I typically just go for an alternative if I don't want to pay for it
I'm happier with paint.net for what I need to do than PS for example

agreed

I have... er...

1:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek Oh do you know what I used paint.net for today? I created a fake--- nevermind

Bob
@OliverSalzburg pretty much :P

@JourneymanGeek It was just for fun, but not exactly legal...

Bob
I mostly keep this for Premiere and Acrobat now

@Rahul2001 are you trying to get served for alcohol?

1:23 PM
ah fake ID.

Bob
sure, there's free video editors too
but, sure, I could use an old core2duo desktop if I really wanted to torture myself

I actually used to have access to printers that dwould print it for a bit

@Burgi nope, not really interested in that

uh huh

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh. it gets annoying
I had ... CS4? for a while. missed a lot of CS5 stuff I wanted

1:25 PM
@Burgi Seriously, I'm not interested in smoking or drinking...

i had a copy of dreamweaver CS4 i used FOREVER

@JourneymanGeek uh... um... OF COURSE NOT! Actually, uh, maybe?

what is the point of a fake ID if you aren't trying to get booze?
booze or naughty mags

@Burgi bah, I just made it for fun...
But Imma keep it... Might come in useful someday :P

hence my "uh huh"

Q: How to boot back to windows from Kali linux

QwertyI have windows 7 32 bit of 1gb ram comp. I have installed kali Linux from USB stick and I am not able to go back to my previous windows how can I go to the windows plz help.......

2:29 PM
Restore from backup. Easy

l33t haxxors don't backup
spoilers!

2:52 PM
@Bob heh. got dragged along for a emergency dog food and orange run

I so passionately hate SBS

Apparently my dad's overfeeding the roomie again
@OliverSalzburg singapore bus service? I hate em too

@JourneymanGeek Windows SBS ;P

I'm pretty neutral on the bus service ;D

2:53 PM
small business server?
I prefer tower transit myself

I've never had to use it, what is it currently giving you trouble with?

Also taking into account time differences...

I've made the huge mistake of adding a user NOT through the SBS console, but the regular AD control panel

Happy Chinese New Year

2:55 PM
mod, mod, mod, ro, ro, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod, mod

So now the user doesn't appear in the user list in the SBS console

@allquixotic RO!

So they can't be set as the local admin for their workstation
So they can't install a printer
Obviously, once you start messing with the SBS it starts to lock up, freeze and, in general, fuck with you
It's like running a VM in a VM

@JourneymanGeek Year of the Rooster!

Yeah, I should say that in chinese but there's 2-3 common pronounciations and anyone ethnic chinese here and regular probably speak great english ;p
@BenN yup
roomie's chinese zodiac sign ;p

3:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek Is that the reason for the overfeeding?

@OliverSalzburg naw. My dad just tends to pop him some kibble every time they go out
and a lot more than I do
and claims he dosen't
Its a bit of an ongoing ... thing we're trying to work on

Bob
@JourneymanGeek aren't you, uh, a day early?

i thought it was on saturday

Oh, Google does indeed say it's Jan 28

3:14 PM
lol yeah, but I'd forget on the actual day

Bob
@JourneymanGeek so, 2/4 have made it to cgw safely :P
the HDDs are on the third, expected today
the one that was meant to arrive two weeks ago is still MIA

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...orange?

Apparently Chinese New Year is a big issue for us, because we get tons of shit from China and nobody is working over there :P

lol
@Bob yeah
mom suddenly decided we needed oranges.
and er
most places are sold out
or crowded

Bob
3:24 PM
@OliverSalzburg heh, I've had issues with orders from china/aliexpress/ebay the last two years, perfectly placed right at cny
not this year!
instead, this year I get to deal with amazon!
...there's something about jan/feb and shipping failures for me

We need RFID cards right now. And everyone is producing them in China. At least the amounts we need

oh snap

Bob
@OliverSalzburg no local stock?
no random warehouse with a couple thousand in europe? :P

@Bob We need 2000 cards with a hole punched into them, which is apparently a major issue due to the way the antennas are laid out

Bob
ah

3:32 PM
Also, we need the cards to have a silver metalic finish

Bob
yea, usually the antenna runs around the outer edge...

Well, that's what the client wants
@Bob Apparently, it pretty much fills out the entire space of the card
I thought it would pretty much only run along the edge

Bob
hm. maybe I'm thinking of nfc

Well, I haven't checked it either, but that's what they're telling us

@BenN my girlfriend loves the chinese

3:34 PM
We'll probably end up just using the same old regular cards we always have and maybe we'll put a sticker on them ;P

i've been conned into going to the parade on saturday

@Burgi Women's March ?
Gonna setup that on my Galileo
Finally a use case for it

@Bob Creative Cloud has to be the most broken piece of shitware I've seen since McAfee on Windows. On Mac it's surprisingly well-implemented for the most part

Bob
@allquixotic The answer was ... to delete the account DB :S

@HackToHell not american so I doubt. Local CNY parade?

3:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek ooh I didn't know that

@HackToHell read 2 lines up ;p

@HackToHell chinese new year...
manchester has a large chinese population

ah cool

The whole site is a nightmare.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Where is the rest of the article?

But it pretty much has those three steps. Step one and two are a little more elaborated, while step 3 is verbatim.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I meant where is the example C code that actually does something.
It's pretty much useless without it.

@DavidPostill THAT'S THE JOKE RANT!

@ThatBrazilianGuy I want to cast a close vote on the whole website :)

Besides, looks like the author doesn't know what he's talking about it's possible to use just apache .conf files to achieve this.

384 GB of RAM to dump. Ouch.
Yeah. Even dumping the 24 GB of RAM on this laptop to disk takes quite a while.

@bwDraco In this case, the "bugcheck" was just a critical error in the SQL Server process

Why would it crash the whole server?

7:32 PM
It is my understanding that it didn't crash the machine, just the SQL part, which is the most important

Okay, makes sense. No real SQL Server experience.
So, it has its own bugcheck mechanism...
384 GB of memory kinda reminds me of this:
Apr 3 '16 at 7:44, by bwDraco
Is there a workload where I as a consumer would ever need 768 GB (12x64GB, quad-rank modules) of memory?
(For reference, Intel HEDT platforms accept up to 128 GB of memory, while mainstream desktop platforms since Skylake support up to 64 GB.)

I'm on legacy Skyrim primarily for compatibility reasons.
(level 78 Altmer about 2/3 through the main quest)

@bwDraco it's possible, in theory, but I'd think that if you truly were even close to consuming that much RAM, your GPU and/or CPU and/or disk would be overloaded

Ouch. Call your credit card issuers to freeze your cards.

@noitsbecky hey, that sucks, but more importantly, are you still coughing up blood?

9:51 PM
@allquixotic I never coughed up blood, but Dog was puking up blood
Dog is dead though
Cat has 9 lives

@allquixotic Pretty sure Skyrim SE would crash by the time you got to 100 GB of memory use, and it would probably be CPU-bound.
I doubt the game would be very stable past 20-30 GB of RAM use.

@noitsbecky um you're the same person as Dog

Most modern games are designed to run within 8 GB of system RAM, but will often perform better with 16 GB.
