@bwDraco Chicken and Egg problem - the "way out", I found, was to be interested
if you're not interested enough to learn on your own then it might not be the right field for you

Bob
I just pick things up as I need them and promptly forget them afterwards

it has to be innate, it has to come from a place you can't control, to make you want to learn because you're curious/interested without having to find an external motivation

@allquixotic Maybe he's interested, just not having enough time

@Boris_yo if you want an upgrade (not clean install) you must launch the setup.exe from inside the running win7 os.
A direct boot to usb can only do clean install

GTK+ displays the code point in a box.
It's that GTK+ displays missing glyphs as boxes with Unicode code points inside.

Bob
, more like
that's what Unicode fallbacks are for...
noooope, that's only for *nix
it uses the native UI toolkit for Windows, macOS and Android

...it's Pango, not GTK+ (although Pango is a core GTK+ dependency).

@Bob If you were upgrading on your old drive, how could you remove it in the process?

?

Bob
6:37 PM
@bwDraco Still only for LInux afaik
it uses Uniscribe on Windows

Odd. Then why does Firefox do this?

Bob
@bwDraco Do what?

Uniscribe is the native Unicode library.

Bob
The codepoint-in-a-box?
That is by far not a GTK+ thing.
Also, Uniscribe doesn't handle font fallback automatically iirc. that has to be implemented by the user
Apparently Chromium might use Pango on Windows too
that would explain why its font rendering sucks so much
ah, Uniscribe does some fallback stuff

Perhaps I'll start working on Firefox code?
Another language to learn, Rust...

Bob
6:42 PM
eh, a large chunk is in JS
and that's relatively easy to get into

well all of the perf-sensitive code and native platform stuff is in C++, and it's pretty messy

Bob
@bwDraco FYI it's manually implemented in Firefox
> I'm using that logic in the Uniscribe path.
> I'd actually like to copy Pango's approach of drawing the Unicode character number in the missing-glyph box (hexboxes). We can't use Pango's because we don't draw using pangocairo and a cross-platform solution would be great.

Huh.

Bob
There was a request to make it look nicer that went nowhere
@allquixotic they're working on porting that to rust, with some H.264 metadata parsing ported so far
but C++ is one of the few languages where I'd say you really need some level of competence before diving into a large project, if only because it's the equivalent of pointing a GAU-8 at your foot

I'll run unit tests in my library

at least with the JS(M) parts you can get a soft start by writing them as addons first

Overview On July 20, 2016 we experienced a 34 minute outage starting at 14:44 UTC. It took 10 minutes to identify the cause, 14 minutes to write the code to fix it, and 10 minutes to roll out the fix to a point where Stack Overflow became available again. The direct cause was a malformed post that caused one of our regular expressions to consume high CPU on our web servers. The post was in

"I'm definitely guilty of this. When I throw a regex together, I never worry about performance; I know the target strings will generally be far too small to ever cause a problem. But you may not need a large string to cause a major performance bottleneck – it's entirely possible to formulate regular expression patterns that consume exponentially more CPU time for each additional input character" -- Jeff Atwood

Malformed post—Is this an algorithmic complexity attack against Stack Exchange?

My guess is that it was just some "my code is broken!" with a copypasta of that broken code, and that the code just happened to have accumulated a boatload of spaces (that may have linewrapped in the IDE)

Zen engineering samples! The chip must be almost ready for launch...
550 MHz idle? That's lower than many Intel chips, which typically clock down to 800 MHz.
Perhaps the type U and Y chips clock lower than that, but I have no firsthand experience with them.
2.8-3.2 GHz is not exactly impressive, though. Then again, ES parts are often clocked lower than retail parts, which likely have revised silicon. Test runs tend to be more conservative than final parts because you don't want to have as many bad parts.
you want to see how well things perform before you raise the clocks as high as possible.
After all, the Zen μarch is a total redesign from scratch, with engineers given carte blanche on the chip design.
Bear in mind the low TDPs. 65W for a 4C/8T chip running at 2.8-3.2 GHz doesn't sound bad.
Intel's able to hit 3.4-4.0 GHz within this same envelope with 4C/8T but again, the AMD parts are engineering samples. We don't know their IPC just yet.

You have 9 days left to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
Also, don't wait until the last minute: reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/4taqsx/…
> [...] the last 2 days will be hard, the Update and Activation servers will run on 100% so expect errors.

More likely they will cull half the cores on the activation servers and force people to buy it because they couldn't activate in time.

@allquixotic yeah..that's sim Lim. Now THE tech mall since the other PC centric one closed down for renovation

@JourneymanGeek: I heard you went out of your way to deploy Windows 10 on every machine you had. How did it go?

I way to skip those errors
use the .ISo

I think you could do some MDT wizardry to automate the upgrade across your domain

11:23 PM
If you have system and data partitions seperate you could easily do that
just have a script whe you boot that applys a .wim to the system partition :-)

That would definitely make it easier. MDT theoretically can do in-place upgrades, but I haven't dared try them
My organization makes it a policy to occasionally completely reimage machines anyway

@bwDraco used a installation USB. Went good.

Yeah, never tried to upgrade using MDT

All my machines is only 4 or 5 tho.

Microsoft did though
I hate having an AD server that can't be patched to fix a memory leak it hassss
Having to reboot it and the entire IDM forest is annoying as heck

Q: Visual Studio 2015 installation fail

Hendrik KalinkeI'm not quite sure if this is the correct board for this kind of question but I didn't found another one with this kind of topic. No, the only way to get Windows 10 free on a new Windows installation is before the deadline is via the Media Creation Tool. This is because the installation must be installed for 30 days first (for updates apparently) before the Get Windows 10 update is available. — cybermonkey 5 hours ago
