12:00 AM
@3DDario ask here. If it's a site question we'll redirect you

@MichaelFrank I'm going to buy this motherboard 'Supermicro X10SLH-F'. The motherboard manual ( supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/C222/MNL-1464.pdf ) at page 20 says "Also your power supply must supply 1.5A for the Ethernet ports.". Do i need a different power cable?

@3DDario 1.5A for the Ethernet ports? What rail or wire is this power derived from?
Also, are you building a server or workstation? There's no reason to pick a Supermicro X board unless you're going to use Xeon processors. This is a C222 board for Haswell-EP processors.

@bwDraco I'm going to use a Xeon processor (E3-1230v3).

E3? That's Haswell-WS, not quite Haswell-EP.
Hmm. Building an entry-level server or workstation?
...odd. I thought Ethernet uses lower voltages than 3.3V? It can't possibly be pulling power directly from the supply rails...

@bwDraco Entry level server
@bwDraco I don't know that's why I asked you, in the manual of the motherboard there isn't anything about it

12:11 AM
That's a really odd requirement. Any decent power supply should do here.
Use unbuffered (not registered) DDR3 ECC memory up to 32 GB.

@bwDraco A "normal" power supply should be enough or i need something "special"?

Any normal ATX supply will do. For your application, you may want to consider redundant PSUs, though that's probably not mandatory.

@bwDraco redundant PSUs are what turned my windows 2003 server into a 100lb behemoth
its 16 fans roar at 30000 rpm
wtf, meth is used as an abbreviation for method?

@bwDraco Ok, thank you very much :)

12:30 AM
@3DDario normal PSU from what I can tell - just for the heck of it, if you need a specific PSU recommendation, maybe try hardware recs?
@bwDraco those are pretty good, reasonably priced systems for low end VM servers
Also IPMI <3

@JourneymanGeek Ok, tomorrow i will try to ask to Hardware Recommendations

@3DDario I'm 99% sure any good, quality, standard PSU should work

@JourneymanGeek Well, thank you

cat
You'll need a power supply that supplies at least 1.5A on +5VSB
It's rarely advertised on consumer power supplies funny enough

Just downvote and move on.

I did

But I am perplexed by his reaction.

@cat Huh. That makes perfect sense.

@Ramhound Welcome to the jungle internet.

@Ramhound for some reason, people get annoyed by your comments >_>

12:50 AM
While most >400w supplies will do at 2A+ on +5VSB, bearing in mind everything else that uses it probably adds up to 1A on it's own, you might want to look specifically for a PSU that provides 3A for extra leeway. Then again, knowing how bloated and exaggerated power supply recommendations are in every other corner of the IT world I'd take the 1.5A requirement with a pinch of salt
@JourneymanGeek it's probably because... they are annoying

this id plausible, yes
Ever come across a possible answer. Then decide its so horrible you don't want to post it, or even try it? ;p

@JourneymanGeek most of my answers are like that, yes.

Q: Is it worth it for the average user to upgrade their computer every 18 months?

puzzlerI hear that every 18 months computers get twice as powerful, but looking at my computer from 2010 and a new computer from 2016, (that's 4 18-month periods, meaning 8 times more powerful) I really don't see much difference in key stats. Memory Frequency/Speed: 1333 hz - 10600 MB/Sec VS 2133 hz ...

TechMonkIn the future I would suggest troubleshooting the issue further rather than recommending a reload of a device for x2 reasons: 1) You will rarely get to just wipe a network device in the real world. 2) You won't know what you did wrong of how to fix it. I have a sample RTR and SW config below ...

I don't want to issue a vote but I don't want to indicate that "no action is needed"

I was taken back by the first sentence :$

@Hafo - You are over 9 months out of date. You are not even running the original 10586 build, which excluding people who updated manually, ended up being 10586.3 when Version 1511 was actually released. — Ramhound 47 mins ago
Uh-oh.

1:05 AM
?
How do I know that?
Because I upgraded my own system to 10586 using an .ISO before 10586 was pushed, when it was pushed, it ended up being 10586.3 which was a day 0 patch basically. This was before the 10586 .ISO was pulled
So if they are using 10586 it means they are running a build from before that 0-day patch
and since 1511 was released in Nov, and my bad month, that is 9 months ;-)

would you guys agree that adding the windows-10 tag is just adding an irrelevant tag?

yes

Agreed—the question involves a matter that is below the OS.

I am shocked that 5 votes I received all within 2 minutes, were not rolled back:$

Edited the tags again. Should be much better.

( I agree with the tags ) but the author randomly use an acronis-trueimage tag but made no mention of it in the question.
the new tags do a better job, but I am, being me.

I just looked it up. SCARY is an acronym that means: Seemingly erroneous (Constrained by conflicting generic parameters), but Actually work with the Right implementation (unconstrained bY the conflict due to minimized dependencies). Q: What is serial voting and how does it affect me?

Cody GrayI just noticed that I lost a bunch of points from my reputation score, and I used the "reputation" tab on my user profile page to try and track down the cause. hmm
anyone got an android phone that can do fast charge, and don't mind doing a quick check for me?

What's fast charge? A quick glance on google shows me there's "Quick Charge 3.0" and Fast Charge.

Does my Nexus 5 or Samsung S5 do it?

nexus 5 might.
I basically need someone to run ampere while charging and tell me what the current reading is and if there's a "Max USB Current" value
s5 might do it too

I can give it a go in a couple hours when I'm at home with my USB 3 ports and good cable.

2:37 AM
ahh thanks
superuser.com/a/1102974/10165 (trying to improve on this)

Did you mean definitively?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Max USB current won't show on Samsung phones afaik
it's only for USB-C
The adaptive charging (QC, etc.) don't show a "max" current, it'll just ramp up until voltage drops too far

I need some USB-D in my life

2:53 AM
yup
that's what I noticed
apparently the not to spec cables will report as 3A tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 3A is the USB-C 'basic' fast-charge iirc
equivalent of having shorted data lines on USB Battery Charging Spec

I'm getting 500mA on a PC and 1500mA on a charger
and I'd rather be using the official cable to charge (fast charge!) - these are mainly for throwing in a bag in an emergency, and I'm not seeing excessive current draw on the powerbank either

@Hennes: Where did this "evil daystar" meme come from? Google is providing very little useful information; perhaps it started on 4chan? The best I could find is arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=620937, from a Google search on a date range (<12/31/2003).

bwDracoI ran into the obscure "evil daystar" meme today (emphasis original): That just proves it. The best I could find was on this Ars Technica OpenForum thread but there is at least one ...

@bwDraco Some versions of the Bible use Daystar as a translation of הֵילֵל, or Lucifer.

new phone battery :-)

How the heck did this evolve into a meme, though?

Bob
meme? what?

Night, folks.
It's getting late, sorry.

text editor that allows infinate line lengh

@mrenigma notepad?

and supports unicode

yeah I use notepad but

@Psycogeek Pokemon Go time!

Bob
there's no such thing as infinite in computing

4:44 AM
well not infinate but very long
as in it wont make a line break

@Bob What if I turn my computer off, forever? ;p

Bob
@mrenigma define "very long"?
is this actually text, or arbitrary data?

about that long

Bob
you're probably better off with a hex editor that doesn't try to optimise on linebreaks
@mrenigma that's not very long at all

its text

Bob
4:45 AM
why isn't Notepad sufficient? o.O
do you have word wrap turned on?

ive done that

@bwDraco I think it's literally because it's a star... that you can see during the day.

now any unicode I paste into notepad just shows up as a box meaning it cant display it

I had to set the font to lucida console in charmap and notepad and then save it as utf8

@bwDraco I think it goes back to the stereotype of geeks living in their parents basement, with tans from the CRT. So much so they never see the sun, and get sunburnt easily
So when they leave their basements in the day time, they're suprised by that great big ball of fire, the evil daystar, in the great big blue room.
@Bob oh, the new phone had a unlocked bootloader, presumably cause the reseller flashed it from hydrogen to oxygen OS. I relocked it to get rid of the annoying mispelled message. That wiped the phone, but apparently after initial setup, it just sucks down and reinstalls everything I had before

Bob
5:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek hydrogen? oxyen?

@Bob Oneplus has the same model in china and the US - with different roms - hydrogen is the chinese only rom, and oxygen is the international one
the 3003 is the asia/eu version and supports a lot more LTE bands, none of which my telco supports.
relocking the bootloader erases all the things, but apparently the moment you sign into a new phone, you can import stuff off your old install automatically

freeze.transunion.com/sf/securityFreeze/landingPage.jsp that is so cool makes you wonder why you didnt think of it. Gather up everyones data, then charge other people to look at it. Make it available to the entire web, (for money) even if this then exposes your data to anyone who would pay. scammers people needing a clean ID (yours) to get a loan etc.
Then top off this complete breech of privacy for money, with charging You a subsciption feee so other people cannot readily access it, without you at least getting an e-mail about it.
you get paid from both ends, a robot does most of the work, the information is about 1/2 wrong 1/2 of the time, the robot destroys lives, your entire identity is stolen , the whole world knows everything about you (none of thier business) Then You get to pay for it too :-)
Then top it off with about 3 pages of leaglese trash that absolves you of everything, except the collection of fees, direct from peoples credit cards.
Ok what? yea they fail to properly notify you that protecting your credit card, you gave them access to drain your credit card account (subscription fees).
Now lets review, remember they were going to protect your credit and your privacy. but they are the reason your insecure and tossed your data on the web with a robot. Then turn around they scam you out of your credit card money, they claim to be protecting.

8:39 AM
and thirdly, they also provide (for themselves) that your use of the site and information your provide can be used for "marketing purposes" So if you pay them to protect yourprivacy, they have stated in thier policy that you would therin lose your privacy again, opening up the possibility that your information is used by spammers.
now this isnt some tiny little web site, but the 3rd largest agency that reports to banks, which here in the US the banks will also hand out your mortgage data (usually your most money private data) to anyone also.
And all this time nobody sees that any of this is a bit mafia like?

8:58 AM
the average credit card interest rate (2015 data) is 15% while at the same time a person can only get 0.5% for savings. That means that they charge 30Times as much interest. But that (also) isnt loan sharking, let alone the fees. Is it no wonder why the "rates" (general) are still kept low by the banks (and fed) even though the general costs of living increases (inflation) have continually been much higher than that.
(people with lesser credit also still paying ~22% interest)
This has been you "Wont see that on Forbes" report :-)

@Bob most of those websites have to do a lot of acessibility related things?

@Bob Thank you

why is a little bit of javascript making a <img> tag disappear
it's in the source code, but doesn't render
and I'm so confused
wow
just opened the code in firefoxes html editor and ....
<iframe src="nagios.php" frameborder="2" scrolling="no" onload="resizeIframe(this)" style="height: 261px; width: 1200px;"> &lt;br /&gt;

@djsmiley2k Isn't nagios a monitoring tool? Is it legit?

@djsmiley2k I thought iframe wasn't a self closing tag

is it not? D:
someone posted somethign WRONG?!
@Sathya <3
That was one of those little changes I forgot about :D

been there, bit hard

hehe thank you :)
i originally had the closign tag, removed it after copying some code to make the iframe resizing
didn't revert after that code didn't work! D:

right on.
lmk if that works

Bob
@JourneymanGeek accessibility? ABS? You're kidding, right? o.O
The others, maybe.

@Sathya it did
hense <3
how weird that it caused all the tags after to revert to their chara codes tho
@ThatBrazilianGuy nagios is simple, and easy once you understand it
but there's supposidly far better systems..

ah sweet
we use sensu here

@djsmiley2k at my workplace we can only use open source / free as in freedom stuff
So that's why I heard about it
But I was trying to guess your code from a 3 line snippet :p

hehe
it grabs the nagios output, strips it back and puts it in a nice iframe on a dashboard page

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ridiculous! Yea, they made popup earlier which touted their app but I could ignore the message. Then they redirected to Android to download app. I switched to Chrome mobile and used for a while but then popup started appearing subliminalling their app. I could ignore but soon clicking on "X" redirected to download app.
Do you see that once you give your power to someone, the day will come they would abuse that power. Always notice their looks and what their eyes imply. You will start seeing expression resembling "Soon..." meme.

the actress is wearing a TON of makeup

@Burgi That's normal for anyone in front of a TV camera. Even the men have makeup applied before filming.

to the extent of looking comedic?

"Both men and women need to wear makeup on television, because bright lights and powerful camera lenses cast unflattering shadows and expose and highlight the tiniest imperfections. "
@Burgi maybe it's meant to be a funny/spoof advert?
