@voretaq7 don't worry, on the 22nd of december it will all be good.

reminds me of that story of the parking holder in a zoo in australia

@pfo ? Myan numerology ?

pfo
@Iain of course, you better starting preparing for a slow and painful mayan death.
Death rituals were an important part of Maya religion. The Maya were a ritualistic people, who paid great respect to the destructive nature of their gods. Death rituals were an important part of their religion; they had many traditions to commemorate the recently deceased and worship long-departed ancestors. The Maya greatly respected death; they were taught to fear it and grieved deeply for the dead. They also believed that certain deaths were more noble than others; for example, people who died by suicide, sacrifice, complications of childbirth and in battle were thought to be transpor...
guys, start building your pyramids

@pfo I listened to a radio program recently that suggested this was new-aged twaddle. The main reason being that this is only the end of the 13th Bak'tun and 13 has no relevance to the Myans whereas to Myan's the 20th Bak'tun would be significant.

pfo
@Iain so we all won't die a mayan death shortly before christmas?!?! :P
@Iain but so somewhere before the year 20K it could get real, right ?

8:14 PM
How stupid are we all going to feel if the mayans are right though?
Well actually if we're all dead I guess we won't feel so stupid after all

pfo
@MarkHenderson the jehova's witnesses are going to be pissed

@MarkHenderson Not at all!
oh, yuo beat me to it

@MarkHenderson Honestly, do they say we're all going to die, or does the calendar just stop and people assume that means we're all going to die?
I was under the impression that it just stops.

@MDMarra That one
Why does rowan atkinson need subtitles?

pfo
8:16 PM
@MDMarra THE APOCALYPSE IS COMING!!!!11 I'm upgrading my DR.

Imagine this convo "Dude, I'm already like, a thousand years in the future. Fuck this, I'm going to go sacrifice someone instead."

@MDMarra they say nothing it's just that we're coming to the end of the 13th Bak'tun and because 13 is significant to us a bandwagon has been created

Imagine all of the computers with two digit date fields that thought they were all going to die 12 years ago.

pfo
yeah, hardly imaginable how we all survived that - but the old cobol guys saved the day I guess.

:2990317

8:19 PM
I'm going to laugh harder than I did this past May/Oct with the Harold Camping BS
@tombull89 too much time on your hands?

Did you know that a lot of GPS satellites in orbit (and probably other satellites for that matter) think it's in the 1970s right now?

@TylerShads not one of mine, I'm afraid.

@MDMarra ....huh..wha?

there's also this one:

@TylerShads Many of them didnt have enough memory to hold a 4 digit year field. Satellites are sent up with the least amt of hardware possible on them

8:21 PM
@tombull89 Things like that shit me because it clearly means the RAID BIOS, not the computer BIOS

So they rolled the years on the satellites back a certain number of years to where the calendar lines up again
And the translation for the correct year is handled on the devices

@MDMarra I thought it was the # of weeks they put in the GPS calendar

LOLOLOLMARKDOWN/ENTERKEY

pfo
laterz
gonna grab a beer

I heard they still manufacture 486 CPU's just for that reason, for sending into sattelites, because they're now so small and hardy that htey can operate at rediculous temperatures

8:23 PM
@Aaron I know a guy that worked on US Military GPS y2k stuff and thats how he described it to me
He could have either been dumbing it down, or there are multiple systems that had different problems
@MarkHenderson I'm pretty sure the NASA shuttles were using 486s in them until they were retired
Apparently it takes a shitload of testing/QA to get the radiation hardening on a CPU to meet NASA specs

pfo
speaking of funny things, I've met a guy at VMware World that was working for the british military and wanted to install an ESX cluster into a submarine - and the funny thing was the explained his reasons to be the same as for any enterprise DC etc.
what really bugged me is that they also wanted it for the HA (for non-critical systems that was).

HA in a fucking submarine?

@pfo well, it's not like they're short of power on a nuclear sub...but whaaay?

pfo
he also described that hey have on the order of 200 x86 cores in a normal sub and a disk array in the back - all commodity hardware.

awesome
Someone show him the Sun engineer yelling at his JBOD

pfo
8:26 PM
i met him at a birds of a feather session on the topic of real time apps on vmware, and the guy that vmware sent was really baffled by what the sub guy described they want to do :P

On August 22, 1999 the rollover must be interpreted as a change from GPS Week 1023 to GPS Week 1024.1024 weeks later (on April 7, 2019) the WN will rollover from 1023 to 0, and the rollover must be interpreted as a change from GPS Week 2047 to GPS Week 2048.

Hmm. I've just dug a disk out from the attic that's been around since 1998, and probably in the attic since 2005. Will my laptop make an image of it?
Or, do you feel lucky, punk?

If I buy a GPS device today, and wait until the say, the 1st of January 2022 before turning it on, how is it going to know if this is the week from 1024-2047 or a week from 2048+?

pfo
@tombull89 what's on it - porn you could distribute on floppies ;) ?

@MarkHenderson from a cold boot GPS devices dowload epoch data

8:29 PM
@MarkHenderson, it's supposed to use "other information" to figure it out

@Iain Well I guess my question doesn't sound so stupid then :p

@pfo nope. one of my first computer games, LEGO Creator. Wanted to take a photo of the case for:
yeah...I don't always mean to do that.

I went to buy some lego for a birthday yesterday
I almost died when I saw how much it costs

@MarkHenderson, in that case, you might be boned, but one thing "they" suggest is looking at the date of the firmware that is installed on the device, and using the next logical one for what rollover it is

$120 for a set with maybe 50 pieces in it

8:30 PM
@MarkHenderson I KNOW

pfo
@tombull89 and you did recreate famous porn scenes from porn floppies with it right?

@MarkHenderson what set is that? That sounds absurd

My fiancee's brothers are into legos. The Death Star was like $300 or something outrageous

@pfo no. Jesus, in 2000 I was 12.

Fuck that shit, they can get Lego Star Wars and be happy

8:31 PM
"mainstream" lego runs about $1 per 10 pcs

@Aaron It was a space station, but almost all the models it came with only had about 5 pieces in them
E.g. the space shuttle was three tubes, a small cone for the top and a big cone for the bottom
The fuel cart was a cart body, two wheels and a person

The LEGO Technic Unimog (that I've been trying to put off buying for the hell of it), while awesome, is $199/£150.

pfo
@tombull89 no comment, i already had 300KBps at that time and explored the abyss of internet porn :P

@tombull89 And whats your point?
Yeah what @pfo said
When I was 12 I had fucking 14.4kbps and I bearshared the shit out of it

We didn't have internet until around 2001.

8:33 PM
Actually to be fair by the time I was 12 we might have had 36k or 56k

pfo
@MarkHenderson my first internet experience at home was 33.3K

Error Messages > SAN on a Sub > Lego > Porn on dial up. Welcome to ServerFault chat.

@MarkHenderson When I was 12 I was surfin the web on my Amiga 1000 at a blistering 300 baud

@MarkHenderson this one?

@ScottPack 2400 baud. OK, you win.

8:33 PM
@Aaron Surely it wasn't the web then?

@pfo 1200/75

I just got a weird feeling about my kids potentially talking about having a 50Mb line and acting like it's a 50kb line
(Don't have kids, but future kids)

@Aaron Nup not that one. THis one wasn't in space, it was on the ground

@TylerShads "daaaaaad. it's so sloooooow"

8:34 PM
Like s space shuttle launching thingie
@tombull89 STFU When I was your age I had to wait 5 minutes for a single nipple to load. Now go to yoru room.

pfo
@TylerShads yeah, but you have to understand that HD porn in 4K will be slow at 50Mb

@TylerShads Nope nothing that awesome

@MikeyB I want to say that bad boy plugged in via the LPT as well. Made it fun when I wanted to print something out on my 9-pin Epson.

It was sorta like that one, only not as awesome

Was it actually a space shuttle or something else?

8:36 PM
I don't remember, I only glanced at it before seeing the price

All of my lego was plain blocks/windows etc

Our budget for this kid was $30

@tombull89 Sounds like a good summary to me

So I bought him a NERF gun

8:36 PM
@Iain I miss those
With all the bionicle (as cool as they were when they came out) crap and the custom pieces for each set, its kinda lost its luster

@TylerShads I ended up with 3 biscuit tins full of imagination

^ $399

This is the one I want. I had a look at the build manual for it and the complexity of it is insane.

Whoa]
I want that

8:37 PM

pfo
god, I remember the day when netscape 4 came out :/

Is that the crazy computerised Technic they have these days?

@MarkHenderson that one?

@MarkHenderson Linky.

@Aaron Might have been?
Like I said I didnt look at it for long

8:38 PM
@MarkHenderson that set is 1200 pieces

That's not MindStorms, no. That's infra-red remote control.

@MarkHenderson advancement of it, essentially

Back in MY day we had to settle for Pnumatics Technic

@TylerShads yeah, the bionicle stuff is pretty stupid

And those giagantic battery backs that could spin a motor or light an LED

8:39 PM
Got to love holywood, where hacking WiFi means u can access any webcam on any computer :o

6
Q: Which sets currently contain pneumatic LEGO equipment?

tombull89When I was younger my dad bought me 5218-1, a technic-based pneumatics set, which, combined with the old motor system to provide a mini compressor system created quite a bit of entertainment and it got adapted into various other builds, including a sliding pneumatic bank door. Now, as far as I ...

Holy crap, that excavator costs $350 in Australia

@LucasKauffman Ever see Swordfish?

Seriously, the nostalga that lego.se is causing is immense.

@TylerShads It had a super dissapointing set if boobies in it
I remember that much

8:39 PM
@TylerShads yea

Just typed cockboard in an IM when I meant corkboard. It must be time to go home soon.

pfo
@MDMarra time for some NSFW time ;)

@LucasKauffman Making the 'hacking' progam sequence. need I say more?
GOTTA MAKE SURE THOSE BLOCKS STAY TOGETHER! THE PROGRAM WILL FAIL OTHERWISE

@MarkHenderson Have a look at this site. It's got the manual avalible as a 3-part .pdf which allows you to see the pure brilliance of the kit.

@TylerShads Oh, I thought you meant the bit where he got a blowjob and was still able to hack into some ultra secure place within 15 seconds

8:41 PM
@MarkHenderson that was hilarious too

@tombull89 Yeah I was just looking at it
Anyway I hear my name being called - wqell "daddy" anyway from my sons room so I better go and make sure he hasnt smeared his poo on the wall or something
2
Cya

And they say kids are precious gems :D

@TylerShads When they're sleeping.

@WesleyDavid ...who let you back in
BAD KITTY

@TylerShads Suck it.

8:46 PM
This will never get old.

@MDMarra Cockboard? I'd assume you were just continually angry at Blackboard and move on.

Careful, the Chernoff lurks. Do not wake the beast.

you mean @RebeccaChernoff ?

@WesleyDavid I've put my Blackbloard project on jold until Tuesday. Too much Trello and cockboards to concentrate right now.

@WesleyDavid I hate blackboard, luckily the CS profs never used it ^^

8:48 PM
@TylerShads It's actually not terrible

@TylerShads D=

@WesleyDavid I have super-ping now, beware
@MDMarra its terrible to use IMO

Ususally it's bad because the professors are shitty at getting their content into it

@TylerShads that summons people that havent been in the room before?

And it's also a bitch to admin
but from a user perspective, it's actually not bad

8:49 PM
@MDMarra case-in-point, only computer illiterate writing profs used it

I'm enrolled in an online course now that's really well organized

@tombull89 Summons any user on SE

We also have a university-wide initiative that it's to be used in all classes, online and in-person
And we have a team of Instructional Designers that work with professors to make sure that it's not a clusterfuck
It's a bitch for profs to set up and it's a bitch for Bb server admins, but if done well it's not the worst thing ever to use as a student
Plus, there's a course copy tool. So once professors set up a class well a single time, they can copy it from semester to semester and just change dates (which they usually forget to)

But its harrrrrd

@TylerShads that's what she said

8:53 PM
@MDMarra Flagged for belonging on sex.se

@MDMarra "We spent money on this shit! USE IT!"

@voretaq7 That's what she said.

@WesleyDavid no, she said "I can't fucking believe you spent money on this shit! You wanted it so bad, YOU deal with it!"
subtle difference: In the first one it's the organization's fault. In the second one it's YOUR fault.

@voretaq7 basically
There really aren't any other eLearning platforms out there though.
Blackboard bought WebCT. Then they bought Angel.
Moodle is a piece of shit
That's really it.

I have only ever had the pleasure of working in an environment that didn't apply that policy once.
It was Goldman Sachs. Their attitude was "We spent money on this shit. It's shit, and there's something better. Pay off the contract for the shit and buy the something better."
The best eLearning platform I've ever seen is a professor's web page, maintained by a competent professor.

8:56 PM
@MDMarra I fucking hate WebCT
Hate hate hate hate hate hate

@voretaq7 Can't take tests on it

It was the worst thing about my university
And there were a LOT of things wrong with my uni

eLearning is more than organizing content. It's about facilitating discussions (forums), submitting assignments (uploads with deadlines), and taking times quizzed/exams

@MDMarra ocsw.net
(I know the guy. He wrote it because he hated blackboard :P)

Haha, is it a real thing?

8:58 PM
It doesn't have all the features of blackboard but it also doesn't have half the suck.

As in, you can purchase a support contract

@MDMarra email him and ask :)

Haha

We use a platform called Frog.

Part of the appeal of Blackboard is that if a single guy gets hit by a bus, our contract doesn't go away

8:59 PM
I don't think he really plans on it being a major business but he could probably be convinced - NCC instructors don't make riches
@MDMarra yeah. I keep plugging his stuff in the hope that it'll wind up with a nice following on github or something and have a chance at slaying the Blackboard dragon

@voretaq7 It'll have to integrate with things like Banner to pull course codes

(also as a student: Blackboard SUCKS!)

And be able to push grades from Bb into the Registrar Banner modules

Yeah he has a banner integration but, but I'm not sure how good it is. It works at NCC :P)

hahaha

9:01 PM
I'm not sure what release of Banner they use or how much they've hacked in on top of it though

I'm sure SunGard would just hang up on us if we called with a problem about integration with that system
At least they listen to us with Bb integration issues

I love when schools say "We use Banner" -- that's nice. Nobody uses "Banner", you use "Banner plus 16 billion local hacks"
At hofstra they used to just pawn it off as a problem with Banner or our hackery on top of Banner.
(Granted they were very often right, but still...)

I do think that there need to be competitors, the problem is that so many schools need a high level of automation but are set up very differently. Anything that can meet the automation and integration requirements has to be a clusterfuck, by definition.

@MDMarra s/schools/medical offices/
you think you have it bad, read the HL7 and DICOM "standards" some time.
"So, what kind of transport can I send HL7 messages over?"
"HTTP, SMTP, FTP, Raw socket, Carrier Pigeon, Stone Tablet, Smoke Signal, Semaphore Flags..."

hahaha

9:04 PM
"So what's the format of an HL7 message"
"XML, Tab-Delimited text, comma-delimited text, raw binary, EBCDIC..."
"Who the fuck do I kill for this?"
". . ."

@Nonapeptide Just build your own :) http://www.backblaze.com/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage.html
@MDMarra ಠ_ಠ

It's great - there's no "HL7 viewer" or "DICOM viewer" -- there's "The HL7 tool for Centricity" or "The DICOM viewer for files generated with a GE MultiSlice II CT Scanner".

Medicine should not be allowed to have technology. Leave them in the dark ages with their leeches and bloodletting.

@voretaq7 I'm cool with that
Let's cull the herd. Amirite?

@MDMarra Damn right!
It's disappointing though. At least in academia there's a vague understanding of technology and a desire to apply it in sane ways.
(Banner and Blackboard aside)

@voretaq7 Not here
Maybe in research institutions
Our money comes from our School of Nursing and our Grad Psych programs
You think medical professionals are bad in the field? You should see the ones that weren't good enough to practice, so they teach instead!

9:14 PM
SIGH.....
«You requested that your password be sent to you because it was forgotten or lost.

Your current email address/username is: my.email@address
Your current password is: "mylowsecuritypassword"»

@MDMarra ...do they snap the solid cast magnesium handles off military-grade laptops?

@voretaq7 Nope
Not to my knowledge

@MikeyB "We smoked all the hash. There was none left for the passwords."

You'll appreciate this story though

9:15 PM

@MDMarra Then you're still one up on my users :)

how cool!

We have a requirement that each student complete an internship in their field before graduation
To track this used to be chaos.
Our devs wrote them a nice front end for each school so that each dean's office can track their students
And it has an external interface where the place providing the internships can digitally complete the reviews, etc

@Zypher Rather than building a storage pod, just get the SuperMicro 4U servers that have something ridiculous like 36 drives internal.

The dean for the school of nursing insisted that all 40 of her staff be made "admin" in their corner of the app

9:17 PM
@TomOConnor That's impressive - he got that up to what, 13psi?

So every single nursing professor can add/delete/whatever any records for any of nursing student

We were like, uhhh we have roles that allow for a compromise

Oh my god.

"NO, EVERYONE IS ADMIN"

9:18 PM
@MDMarra NURSES R IN CHARGE!
Haven't you ever spent time in a hospital? :)

I mean, we wrote the app for them. If they want to fuck it up
good for them

We wrote a fine-grained ACL system for our field units

Meanwhile Psych and Business haven't fucked anything up yet since their deans aren't morons

@tombull89 >_<

that allows delegation of permissions on patients, sessions, machine configuration, etc.
Every client - Every Single Fucking One - has all their staff as admins.
Most of them share one login.

9:19 PM
hahaha
awesome
On that note, im outa here

We're removing the ACL code in the next major release because nobody uses it. It's not worth the extra day in the release cycle to test it :P
@RebeccaChernoff awake I see. Someone made coffee?
::hopeful eyes::

coffee is disgusting.

@RebeccaChernoff ಠ_ಠ

tea is also acceptable.

9:21 PM
@ScottPack i've already berated her for this opinion

I need to get some more yerba. I found it much nicer in the afternoon.

@Zypher Good man.

user image
2
OK I'm done now.

speaking of cofee

9:22 PM
My wife's new job rents out space in the lobby to a coffee shop.

@Zypher yawn

@RebeccaChernoff Caffeine deficiency?

Considering it's a fairly small business, she comes home smelling faintly of coffeeshop every night.

@ScottPack Good coffee?

9:24 PM
@voretaq7 I haven't had any, but it smells like it's pretty good quality.

@voretaq7 no, you could substitute it with me rolling my eyes at @Zypher.

Because coffee is amazing. Almost as amazing as green tea.

@RebeccaChernoff word

And you know, it's not even a matter of... GAHH!!! Who's that freak with the eye patch!!! D=

@voretaq7 They're one of those fair trade, mostly organic, hippy places that this town is packed full of.

@voretaq7 Oh hey, keep an eye on my Twitter tonight. I'm making origami squirrels tonight. I've got a nice washi model I'm hoping to finish.

@WesleyDavid SKWRL?
Do Not Eat Smelly Hippy.
(Things I learned from Futurama!)

@ScottPack yerba ?

@voretaq7 Living in Athens has taught me that there is a big difference between Hippy and Unwashed. Unfortunately, many of the latter pose as the former.

HI @WESLEYDAVID

9:27 PM
Yerba mate (; also spelled in English as maté, from the , , ), binomial name Ilex paraguariensis, is a species of holly (family Aquifoliaceae), well-known as the source of the mate beverage, which is native to subtropical South America in northeastern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. It was first used and cultivated by the Guaraní people, also in some Tupí people communities in southern Brazil, prior to the European colonization. It was scientifically classified by the Swiss botanist Moses Bertoni, who settled in Paraguay in 1895. The yerba plant, Ilex paraguar...

@voretaq7 One place I worked at had a POS system named Squirrel. I think the developers moved the old version from flat files to an SQL database, so they got all cute and named the new system SQuirreL. "How's squirrel today?" Yeah, I hated that.
@RebeccaChernoff flashes gang signs
Sup, homie.
@ScottPack DON'T YOU DARE TALK BAD ABOUT GREEKS!!! Their salads are the bomb.

@Iain It's a pretty nice green tea. Reasonably bitter. Normally I drink my tea black, but I usually put a little agave in this stuff. Great earthy flavor. Perks you up without that weird jittery feeling. Strong enough that I can usually get 2-3 steeps out of a single batch of leaves before it gets too weak.

god cogent sales people are like dogs who think you have a stick for them to play with

@Zypher Clobber them with it instead. They'll learn.

@ScottPack it's not something I'm familiar with - I like tea with milk though. If I see some I might give it a whirl

9:31 PM
@Iain Not sure about where you are, but around here most grocery stores have "acceptable" mate tea bags in their tea aisle

@Iain I don't much care for the taste of milk, so I've always been hesitant to try it in tea. Watching my father-in-law drink tea is amusing.

@ScottPack ISO Standard Cup of Tea? (Tea, Milk, Sugar, Honey, Lemon -- It's a compromise between ANSI and British standards! Everybody gets to be unhappy!)

Ostensibly he drinks Irish Breakfast, but by the end of it there's so much milk and sugar one must wonder if it still counts as tea.

@RebeccaChernoff be nice or you won't get your memory

Tepid, sickeningly sweet, and curdling before your eyes. Yup - that's an ISO standard!

9:34 PM
@Zypher hey ):

I am Really, Honestly, trying to figure out of the people who participate on landoverbaptist.net/showthread.php?t=16536 are honest in their believe, satirists or trolls.

@Zypher! are you holding hardware upgrades hostage to motivate your co-workers?
Good man!

meh
I'll just bug @PeterGrace then (;

What?
haha

@Zypher's being mean. But you would never be mean, right? q:

9:36 PM
yeah, she totally has me whipped.
So yeah, guys, I have a problem and I think I'm going to need an intervention.
I keep buying apps on the android store.

@RebeccaChernoff pfft, you can try ...

My latest hotness is WidgetLocker Pro. I have spent the last 15 mins trying to get the "ultimate lock screen"

@PeterGrace it happens when you move over from BB give it 3 months and 200$

9:38 PM
I've spotted an 'oy' in the wild

is that they key to getting my request handled? (;

ALERT: OY SPOTTED

haha ... no

9:39 PM
Wait, what's she going on about?

@RebeccaChernoff Do you have a screwdriver and an old credit card?

5 mins ago, by Zypher
@RebeccaChernoff be nice or you won't get your memory

Ahh.

although i should really have said be nice or you won't get your ssd

@Zypher she's lost her memory and @Zypher found it ?

Q: Virtual Network Interface

ManiI have a question about setting up a customized network over virtual machines. I just have access to one cloud provider that gives me ability to load multiple virtual machines. Each user may have his own VMs that will be loaded during a time or at the same time. Each VM has two network interfaces...

^^whut?
@Zypher meh that's no great loss to humanity. With sufficient RAM you can just hold everything resident and it doesn't matter if your storage is slow :P

@Iain upgrading (:
or at least, trying to q:

scrolls back Am I the only one in here that isn't a room owner/blue?

fellas any help here please serverfault.com/questions/349788/…

@MikeyB ^^ aparently not ;)

at it all day

"Things I Value, and try to bring more to the world using my work: Critical thinking, Authenticity, Statistics, Attention to Detail, Convenience, Common Sense"
I would honestly suggest reformatting your question, paying Attention to Detail in the construction of a question that makes sense and is easy to read and most importantly, Convenient for people to answer.
It hurts to read at the moment.

@tombull89 All the cool kids are blue
(but in here my blue is virtual, not real)

@freiheit you have more power in chat than a room owner
I can't delete anything here or edit things that are past the time limit - you can I think

@MikeyB point taken

@Iain But I would be very reluctant to use those powers in this room, since the intent is for the site I'm a mod .
(unless it was drastically obvious like flagged blatantly offensive comment. Or highly entertaining)

@jaminator And I managed to make it without being snarky :) Yay me!

@voretaq7 To be fair, a lack of breathing leads to coolness in a matter of hours

I'll be snarky for you: @jaminator don't use FTP - it sucks :P
