10:00 PM

@freiheit woad is a good blue

@MikeyB i would disagree with tht

@freiheit Maynard Keenan?

@voretaq7 why do you think it "sucks"?

10:03 PM
=)
FTP being completely clear text is something of a downer.

@WesleyDavid it's from a simpler time

@jaminator FTP? It's insecure, the "control/data port" and return path breaks every firewall I've ever met (and passive/extended passive is a suckfest all its own), the "secure FTP" protocol extensions are blind stinking hackery, A lot of FTP daemons don't support any kind of compression (and even more clients can't handle it)....
@Zypher So is SMTP. Which also sucks. :P

@Zypher Well, you and I hadn't been born yet, so that goes without saying.

SMTP is the black hole of Suck. FTP is merely trapped in its gravity well.

XMODEM, BITCHES!!!

10:06 PM
@jaminator TL:DR: If at all possible, use scp/sftp

@MikeyB did you downvote the question? i have edited it, to be more gentle to one's eyes

@jaminator Don't listen to @voretaq7. Use BitTorrent for all file transfer projects.

@WesleyDavid BitTorrent supports SSL :-)

Or HFTP.

@WesleyDavid Blue Man Group

10:08 PM
Actually, no, I'm sticking with my guns. Xmodem is superior because CP/M.

@WesleyDavid No. Kermit.

@freiheit For the love of vacuum tubes, I forgot all about Kermit!
But still, Xmodem is superior because the 70s.

@WesleyDavid I mean, if your transfer protocol doesn't work on 7-bit connections and translate between EBCDIC and ASCII on the fly, what good is it?

Pick a Kermit.

Kermit is a computer file transfer/management protocol and a set of communications software tools primarily used in the early years of personal computing in the 1980s; it provides a consistent approach to file transfer, terminal emulation, script programming, and character set conversion across many different computer hardware and OS platforms. Technical The Kermit protocol supports text and binary file transfers on both full-duplex and half-duplex 8 bit and 7-bit serial connections in a system- and medium-independent fashion, and is implemented on hundreds of different computer and operat...

10:12 PM
pick a FUN kermit.

one that doesn't make me have modem tone flashbacks.

@voretaq7 I notice you're almost at 28.8k rep.

@WesleyDavid "If I can't have him, NO ONE CAN!" -- Miss Piggie.
@MikeyB hmm, so I am.

10:18 PM
@MikeyB That site perplexes me
@MikeyB I'm going to go for satirists, like the Stephen Colbert "character"

@MikeyB Most assuredly trolls. They don't sound anything like the real deal.

@Aaron IDK it's pretty hard to distinguish between batshit-brand crazy "christians" and satirists / trolls.

@voretaq7 It's easy for me. I've been very close to both.
And looks like Wikipedia says they're satirists.
The Landover Baptist Church is a fictional Baptist church based in the fictional town of Freehold, Iowa. The Landover Baptist web site and its associated Landoverbaptist.net Forum are a satire of fundamentalist Christianity and the Religious Right in the United States. Origin The site was created by Chris Harper, who obtained his Master's Degree in English Literature from George Mason University in 1993 after being expelled from Liberty University (founded by Jerry Falwell) in 1989 for producing a satirical radio show which Liberty's administration found offensive. Harper frequent...

Yeah..... but this is too far out there to not be satirists
So, from the above, the 'Fly' is a word used for an opening in front of your pants / shorts / jeans or trousers, which is 'supposedly' there to make them easier to put on / take off.

But there is a far more sinister and unhealthy reason for the Fly - EASY ACCESS FOR THE HOMOSEXUAL!

It's like making fun of scientology. You tell people it's a religion started by a bad Sci-Fi writer whose followers actually believe that we're controlled by clams -- well c'mon. that just sounds too crazy to be real!

10:22 PM
@Aaron yeah, some serious batshit-brand crazy christians are too far out there to not be satirists (but they mean it)

@Aaron Bullshit. If that were the case there'd be one in the back.
@freiheit Michelle Bachmann.

@voretaq7 OMG! The forever lazy pajama was invented by homosexuals!

(actually in defense of batshit-brand crazy christians, I think her particular insanity is a result of spending time in Congress. She was probably a nut before, but that would push anyone over the edge...)

@freiheit dear God tell me I have not inspired something burgundy

10:26 PM
@voretaq7 I believe they call it fuschia.

@freiheit that ain't fuschia. I had a photography professor in college who wore fuschia lipstick -- I know fuschia! :P

@freiheit fuch-sia?

Sam
well that's certainly an image to catch the eye as I open chat

@Aaron I know, I participated in that survey.
(FWIW I epitomize the male paucity of color vocabulary)
What those survey results REALLY need is a color-picker interface that returns the names for a particular hue (or its nearest neighbors).
@Aaron FEW-sha (at least in NY)
or "ugly ass purple" if you're me.

10:30 PM
/me knows he rode a big horse earlier

I would totally have named a couple of those "cyan"

@freiheit cyan is a color name I know - I had a commodore computer as a kid :)

exactly!

(and laser printers as an adult)

cerise is closer to the colour above

10:31 PM
I just got a work ticket saying that a 120VAC wall socket wasn't working in an office

My color vocabulary is limited to R/G/B/C/M/Y/K
@Iain It disturbs me that you know this.
@AdrianK in the UK? :)

@voretaq7 If my boss wants to send me to the UK, I'd go in a heartbeat.

"It works fine. We like you so much we decided to give you extra voltage"

@AdrianK it's nothing special

@AdrianK so would I - On the condition I retain my current salary but they change the currency unit to GBP
@Iain Lies! You have a queen! And proper tea!

10:34 PM
@voretaq7 1$ == 1£ anyway

@Iain I could easily spend a year visiting calendar circles and castles and archaeological sites. If there were any money in Archaeology, I'd have taken that in school in a NY minute.

@Iain and statutory time off!
@Iain really??

@voretaq7 that's the exchange rate for buying tech anyway the price inUKP is the same or more than the price in USD
@AdrianK calendar circles ?

@Iain yeah I've noticed that. Everyone seems to blame import taxes but I think that's a bit of a crock.

@Iain stonehenge & whatnot.

10:36 PM
As an Apple shareholder however I would like to thank you for your nation's contribution to my ever-growing stock price :)

@voretaq7 total crock

@AdrianK ooh yeah, stonehenge.

Sam
@AdrianK we also have miserable weather, chavs and black pudding, so it's not all great

@Sam But you have curry. Here in Seattle we also have miserable weather, curry, and we can't lane-split either.

Sam
10:37 PM
@AdrianK true, we do have good curry

@Sam nowt wrong with black pudding

Sam
@Iain each to their own, personally I prefer my fry up without the dried blood :)

@Sam I can put up with the chavs (we've got our equivalent), and I can avoid the hell out of black pudding

@AdrianK make your own curry it's easy

weather.... well... it's fine. Global warming will come and you'll be tropical.

10:38 PM
@Iain I do. But I like to try other place's curry to keep it real.

Sam
@voretaq7 but can you put up with the "reality" tv shows about the chavs?

@AdrianK I was spoiled by my indian co-workers at the last job.
@Sam Two words: "Jersey Shore."

@voretaq7 nah - we'll get colder when the Atlantic Conveyor stops

WTF is a chav, anyway?

Or 3 words: "Growin' Up Gotti"
@Iain you're not thinking long-term enough. I'm talking about the century or two right before the isles are submerged by the rising sea.

10:40 PM
A chav ( , also charver in Yorkshire and North East England) is a term that is used in the United Kingdom to describe a stereotype of teenagers and young adults from an underclass background. Etymology The term has its origins in the Romani word chavi, meaning "child" (or "chavo", meaning "boy", or "chavvy", meaning "youth"). The derivative chavette has been used to refer to females. Urban legends have sprung up around the etymology. These include the backronym "Council Housed And Violent" or "Council House-Associated Vermin", and the suggestion that pupils at Cheltenham Ladies' Co...

@AdrianK Scumbag Steve, but with a lower-class British accent.

Sam
@AdrianK if you find a youtube video of "The Only Way is Essex" it'll give you a pretty clear picture, not sure which would win (or loose I guess) between that and Jersey Shore

Ah, UK version of American suburban rednecks and urban skater-scum.

@AdrianK hey! As urban skater scum I resent that!

@voretaq7 better to resent it than resemble it

10:42 PM
@Iain true...

10:53 PM

can someone drop a downvote on this serverfault.com/questions/115445/… please so it get automagically deleted overnight. It's way out of date now

@TomOConnor If you think that stuff is awesome, check out sariel.pl. One guy's awesome builds with a whole lot of technic and some impressive compressors.
@Iain done

also done
is it a year old, negative votes, and no answers for deletion?

oh that's cute, you thought you still had your mind.
You hang out in here. You're insane by definition.
(now wanting to be a mod on more than one site? That might be a whole new brand of insanity...)

10:56 PM
@tombull89 hopefully they will go overnight

@voretaq7 exactly! :)

@tombull89 I think so. Script runs on saturday or sunday I believe(?)

(there's not enough flags on Bicycles. gets boring)

@voretaq7 Think there's two SE users who's mods on three sites.

@freiheit what pedals do you use ?

10:58 PM
@tombull89 Those aren't real people. Jeff & Joel borrowed Watson from IBM and put it to work in the Jeopardy off-season :P

@Iain the pedals are fairly generic mtb/bmx style pedals

@freiheit clipless ?

. . . there are different kinds of pedals?

@voretaq7 yes

@voretaq7 SPDs are cheap and effective

10:59 PM
<- knows nothing of bicycles. My transport knowledge is limited to skateboards and things with internal combustion engines or high-powered traction motors.
All I know from "pedal" is guitar stomp boxes :P

@Iain no, flat platforms. Commuter, and they really don't make clipless shoes in my size.

@voretaq7 flats and clipless

There's also Look, some eggbeater things, a few others. That's just for clipless

I think you need some black pumps instead of those flats. They'll show off your trim toned legs much better.

I had a bike many years ago but it got stolen from outside a workplace. I coudln't afford to replace it so walked to work before getting a new job a few weeks later.

11:01 PM
I've been using SPD clipless for a few years - I'm trying out SPD-SLs tomorrow

@AdrianK trim? I have huge quads! :)

@Ward clipless is the way forward

My brother, on the other hand, gets through bikes like anything. I think he's on his 8th in 5 years, through theft, damage, and generally running them into the ground - but using a bike to do 20 miles a day, 5 days a week will kill them.

@tombull89 . . . this brother of yours, Manhattanite commuting from Harlem to Wall Street, or just clinically insane?

11:03 PM
@voretaq7 probably the latter

My main bike is a 25 yr old mountain bike, my "newest" bike is a 20 year old tandem I bought last summer.

@Ward And both have ponies?

For the first time in years I drove past a tandem today.

My main bike is a 2 year old touring bike (used and set up as a commuter).

@freiheit I like your rack, when I win the lottery I'm gonna get me one of these:

11:05 PM
@tombull89 there is probably substantial overlap between the two sets...

It's likely that my next bike will be a titanium cyclocross bike with some commuter features

@freiheit similar to my current weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/…

Things System Administration and Bicycling have in common: It's perfectly acceptable to tell someone you "like their rack".

it's possible I'll be talked into a titanium cargo bike instead, though. :)
@Ward you don't have to win the lottery to get my rack. racktime.com/en/rear-carriers/addit -- ~$50

@freiheit What's a cargo bike? One of those wierd things with the extended rear triangle?

11:08 PM
@freiheit I quite like the look of the Sabbath Silk road for my next bike sabbathbicycles.co.uk/bikes/silk_road

Or with a cargo space in front?

@Ward there's a ton of types of cargo bikes. it's a general category of bikes made to carry stuff

Substantial differences between Bicycling and System Administration: There's no way in hell you're getting a $50 server rack.

I'm in the wrong field. As usual. ::sigh::

the extended rear triangle is a "long tail cargo bike" (xtracycle is the most popular but there's other variants). cargo bike with the space up front like your link is a "long john", "bakfiets" or "box bike".

I had to give away some DEC equipment racks. Originally a couple thousand dollars, but no one wanted them 15+ years later.
I used to think the long bikes looked stupid (Actually, I still do), but I imagine they ride a bit like a tandem, and I really like the feel of riding the tandem by myself.

11:12 PM
@Iain I got an offer to basically have a titanium frame custom made for the cost of the gases.

@voretaq7 So, what's the status of implementing the new, improved FAQ? I don't see many new comments.

Outside windows... in a colocation environment? Full sun... on server racks?
What the ever loving frack.

@Ward we discovered at christmas that several of our friends have recently bought tandems. I'm hoping they will persuade my wife they are a good theng
@freiheit I hope you snatched their hand off

@WesleyDavid How the hell are they going to grow mushrooms in there?

@Iain ?

11:15 PM
@Ward I think I'll tag it feature-request either this weekend or Monday
It seems to be relatively stable -- did anyone remove cheese from the list of things we're not about?

@Iain meaning "enthusiastically said yes"?

('cuz really, we can't deny @Chopper3 his cheese. that would just be cruel!)
@WesleyDavid I've seen it before.

@freiheit yes !

NSLIJ's (4th floor) datacenter has a windowed wall looking out on a hallway with outside windows.
It was really nice. Actual daylight.

@Iain basically. He's gotta move a couple tons of equipment about 500 miles first. (requires borrowing a vehicle) And I'll probably try to talk him into building a cargo trailer for the bicycle non-profit he works for first.

11:29 PM
You know we really don't get many AIX questions anymore. 🐼 Sad-Panda 🐼

most of the AIX questions I remember where from one guy and he was clueless

And where are the OpenVMS questions?

@Ward sadly. they are consigned to history

There, vote limit reached. ::happy:

@Ward we retired our last VMS box several years ago

11:35 PM
@voretaq7 <AOL>me too</AOL>
@freiheit <AOL>me too</AOL>

@Iain I'm going through some of the older questions I've answered and cleaning up / upvoting questions on my way to the Electorate badge. I miss the AIX qquestions :P
Apparently my university retired their last two VAX/VMS systems.
I wonder what runs the library card catalog now?

@voretaq7 I'm going through old unanswered questions on and making them -1 so the automagic delete kicks in
@voretaq7 I <3 VAX architecture

twitch

@Iain I have no strong feelings one way or the other about VAXen.

@Iain o_O

11:39 PM
I want to have IBM Power's babies though.

Ubuntu changed how they refer to the Samba service again. sigh

@AdrianK and where NetworkManager sends its status signals, but that's really Gnome's fault...

@voretaq7 All fixable if someone would just answer me about whether it's against the ToS to hold a raffle to go beat the crap out of Shuttleworth. With a shovel.

@voretaq7 I believe at the university I work at, the library catalog on vax was III, and it's still III (but on a linux box that the III company administers)

11:43 PM
heh

Sexualitysexuality.stackexchange.com

Beta Q&A site for educators and professionals to discuss human sexuality.

Currently in private beta.

#1 user - @voretaq7 !

@freiheit We used Lexicat.
@Aaron I know, I'm kind of disturbed by that :P

@voretaq7, so are you an "educator" or "professional"
ifyouknowwhatimean

It needs to go into public beta NOW so someone who knows more than me about sex can get in there and knock me off the top of the heap.
@Aaron Why can't it be both? ::suggestive eyebrow waggle::

Sam
#1 user - @voretaq7 ! - Why does it sound like that should be announced to some dodgy 80's sax music

@Sam Synthesizer. Porn studios can't afford a real sax player!

11:45 PM
These top questions are pretty funny for those on the outside, though

Sam
@voretaq7 true, or a keyboard with a sax button

@Aaron they're pretty funny on the inside too.
want an invite?

why not

And whoever in Gnome suggested that the gdm/lightdm login & screensaver dialogs should warn on Num Lock should also be beat with a shovel.

what do I have to lose?

11:46 PM
@Aaron the virginity of your eyes?

@voretaq7, I'm on the INTERNET . It's too late for that

email me (the one in my profile works) & I'll send you an invite
I really think the site has a lot of potential - I'm hoping it doesn't degrade into teenagers seeking porn once it goes into public beta.

I don't think I can see emails in profiles

Sam
Just think, to get your eyes ruined in that manner 20 years ago, you would have had to go outside and talk to real people.

@Aaron mikeg@bsd-box.net

11:48 PM
rgr

(what's a little more spam? I really need to upgrade SpamAssassin)
hmm...
maybe tonight/tomorrow I'll ask a Q about (on-server) spam-fighting solutions that don't suck...

Sam
I hear unplugging the ethernet cable works well

Hah

@Sam yeah but then the web server goes down :(

@voretaq7 If you delete that after Aaron gets it, it won't show up in the transcripts

11:50 PM
Funny, so we can post Qs from sexuality and see more text in chat than we can on that area 51 sample Q page

it also inhibits the sending of mail. I want to be able to spam everyone else!
I think it aged out already :P Besides IDC - it's in the whois database anyway

so just flag it
OFFENSIVE!!!

@Aaron but then I'll get ANOTHER chat ban :(
sniffle
oh SquirrelMail. You suck so hard you blow.
How could something associated with Squirrels be so awful?!?
@Aaron you should has invite shortly

Sam
I'm not confident allowing a squirrel to design a webmail interface is ever going to produce good results

@voretaq7 Running 1.4.13 here. We've actually referred to Squirrelmail in staff trainings as Hotmail's retarded little brother.

11:54 PM
@voretaq7 We replaced Squirrelmail with Outlook Web Access about a year ago... Now I miss the squirrels and nuts. That may have more to do with the backend replacement, though.

Sam
Right, my brain hurts, i'm of to bed, night all

@voretaq7 oh god, I'm regretting this already
I don't think anything good is going to happen on this site

@Sam sleep well
@Aaron sex.se ? (ooh that's a palindrome)

@Iain, no, that would be sex.es

@Aaron oops too much rioja

11:59 PM
(or se.x.es), but who's counting

@freiheit I refuse to run windows on my machines :P
