00:00 - 18:0018:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
@Aaron Some of the questions are actually pretty good.

@voretaq7 wasn't my call, and not my machines (once they're running windows)

@voretaq7 I know, but I can't help but giggle at some of them

Uuuuuughhhhh - haven't had any green tea or coffee today and I'm having major withdrawal headache.
Someone hit me with a hammer to distract me from the pain.

@WesleyDavid Can I hit you with an HP ProLiant DL385 G6 instead?

12:05 AM
@freiheit Best way for it to be. :-)

(it's been misbehaving, so i'd be accomplishing two goals at once)

Just watched sicko
@voretaq7 ur american right ? You really have to pay thousands of dollars for healthcare ?

@LucasKauffman well define "you"
Everybody pays for healthcare at some point or another - those doctors don't work for free

yea ofcourse, but when you get insurance
well I mean
you actually have to get insurance
and show ur not sick when u get it right ?

@LucasKauffman, and US only pays about 30 or so % in personal income tax - what do you pay in personal income tax?

12:09 AM
depends on ur wage
the healthcare and pension and unemployance budget
is always 17%
and then the taxes range depending on ur wage

@freiheit If I can't get a cup of coffee shortly, yes.

Naturally - but it's fairly safe to say most other "industrialized" coutnries have much higher personal income taxes (especially those that do provide government-run health care)

think it ranges between an additional 10 to 60 percent

Canada, western europe, etc

yea
but you dont find it apoling you put a price on a human life ?
or loose a body part

12:11 AM
@LucasKauffman, we don't have infinite doctors, do you?

because u cant afford to put it back on :p

somebody is making decisions about who gets to see doctors when

we dont but we seem to cope quite well :p
yea
you just make an appointment
I can make one for tomorrow

@LucasKauffman are you sure? What about terminal cancer patients? Who decides when to cut off their treatments?

@WesleyDavid why would you need anything more than catnip infusion ?

12:12 AM
the family

@LucasKauffman - what if you decided you needed to see a cardiologist? Could you just walk right in?

well my grandmother needed that

@LucasKauffman ayup

if its urgent they call em straight away

Anyway I'm out of votes till I the automagic deleter script runs so - night all

12:13 AM
otherwise it takes about a week tops

@LucasKauffman, ok, so who defines "urgent"? You, or the doctor?

@Iain Well, @voretaq7 grounded me from catnip after I played jump rope with his single mode fiber cables.

the docter :p

AND if I need blood work my doctor can't do it: I have to go to a lab and wait with sick people who may be there with god-knows-what disease waiting to get a test.

@voretaq7 That's the same here

12:14 AM
u serious ?
I had blood work done
was just popping in the afternoon

@voretaq7 - outsourcing, my boy, that's the wave of the future!

he took my blood and I had the results a week later

@LucasKauffman I can have my doctor do it, but insurance won't cover it unless it's done by Quest Diagnostics (the lab they contract with)

o_O
wow it really is that way :p

I usually just pay the $175 for the full panel every year and write it off as unreimbursed medical expenses.

12:15 AM
damn

I'd rather not be in the waiting room at Quest with the guys with whooping cough and TB waiting to give a sputum sample.

There are a bunch of labs here, Dr. says you need whatever test, you go to one of them. Same w/ e.g. ultrasounds.

@voretaq7 don't forget downvotes on questions that get deleted are doubly free till 03:00 UTC

I have to pay like 20 euro when I visit a docter
but its reemborsed

@Ward There are a bunch of labs here. Dr. says you need whatever test and you go to the one your insurance company says to go to or you damn well better pay for it yourself

12:16 AM
@LucasKauffman the other problem is with "free" health care, sometimes people abuse it

thats true

@Aaron define "abuse"

Since gov is the insurance here, we get a bit more leeway.

but I doubt you can say that a lot of abuse is happening

e.g. for an ultrasound recently, we called around to find one that could it fastest and had decent reviews.

12:17 AM
since everything is already free

@Ward Medicare will pay for my doctor to draw blood and run labs...

@voretaq7 I'm writing a bit on service availability. Can I use this as an example of thorough service availability checking?
Jan 10 at 0:17, by voretaq7
for example, our database cluster is only "up" if:
1) It answers ping
2) It answers SNMP (host-resources)
3) It answers DB sanity queries
4) It answers DB Status queries
5) It answers business-logic trending queries
Yay, it expanded.

@LucasKauffman it all depends how do you define 'abuse' - if your dr is seeing too many people that keep on making follow-up appointments that they do not need, pushing your wait time for an appointment back, that's "abuse" in some ways

unfortunately in my country you can only have the government be the insurance company if you're a congresscritter/president/vice president/SCOTUS justice, or old.

GPs here are just too busy for that, doesn't matter who pays, it's a specialty service.

12:18 AM
@Aaron why would that happen ... Ive never seen that happen :p

@WesleyDavid I'm not sure how "thorough" it is, but it works for me :)

@LucasKauffman - how do you know?

@LucasKauffman Munchausen's
(I think I spelled that wrong but google it and it'll aim you at the correct spelling :P)

@voretaq7 If you use more than ICMP to check service availability, then it's thorough. =)

@Aaron Because I feel like what you think of our system I will have to wait for weeks and months

12:19 AM
@WesleyDavid I'd say if you use more than just SNMP (host-resources) you're thorough.

It works tolerably well here, no one talks about the subjective question of when health care gets cut off. It depends on the person, the doctor, how pushy you are, whether it's an odd or even day...

but Ive never had to wait for more than a 3 days tops

or at least better than most.

@Ward exactly

@LucasKauffman well, just like you point out the "worst" parts of our system, I can point out the "worst" parts in yours

12:19 AM
@WesleyDavid - have just sent you several megabytes of rubber duck on computer action!

@RobMoir Did you really just send me pictures of your rubber duck having sex acts performed upon it?

@LucasKauffman obviously we can argue extremes all day long if you want

By an orange stuffed animal?

yes

@RobMoir Ha! Cross posted. JINX!

12:20 AM
Real "thorough" monitoring would be behavior testing. Which in my case we can do with some of the Ruby automated testing frameworks that can drive a web browser, and maybe one day we'll set that up :)

@Aaron sorry if I offended you :p I just wanted to see if its true, what would be an extreme here ?

@RobMoir So, will you talk to it?

Gotan is happy to have the rubber duck as a friend. Or gimp if you prefer

@LucasKauffman Another main issue is that some insurance companies are "for-profit" - but this doesn't mean they are bad! It can mean that they don't provide some services they should, but it can also mean that they get rid of inefficiency (which is good!)

its a hit at work

12:21 AM
@LucasKauffman - oh, I'm not offended, I'm just saying that ALL organizations "put a price on human life" even the FAA

@Aaron Yea ofcourse, but they do not make giant profits of it :p ?

@LucasKauffman - They could mandate that all the airplanes have steel reinforcing cages capable of 20G impact survival, but the truth of the matter is that you could only get 20 people in it, and it would be completely economically unviable

ofcourse

@LucasKauffman - Capitalism at work! You do good business, you make profit!

@RobMoir Wow, your working conditions are cramped. Looks like a nice office in general, though.

12:22 AM
yea ok, but still you could do the same with the police and the fire department

@LucasKauffman - Google for pay-for-spray fire departments and read some more good capitalism news bites!

why didnt u do it with them :p ?

@Aaron I'm fortunate that in my area most of the fire departments are either city-paid or volunteer :)

mmm I dont mind capitalism, but Im quite happy I have free healthcare :p

12:24 AM
@LucasKauffman - short version of that story - some people outside the "city" limits don't pay "city" taxes, and as such shouldn't be entitled to "city" services
@LucasKauffman - but it's not free!

@WesleyDavid to be fair, its a desk with a pc with 2 monitors, plus 2 laptops on it. So its cramped but only because its overloaded

no its not free

Our ambulance services however are provided by the county police. They will invoice the hospital you get taken to, who will invoice your insurance (who will deny the claim the first time as a matter of general practice because the Nassau County Police EMS is not an approved ambulance. You're supposed to lay there bleeding until Hunter Ambulance Service can get to you, or call for pre-authorization.)

(after reading that can you lucky bastards REALLY complain about the state of your healthcare systems??)

12:25 AM
Inter-jurisdictional services, everybody loses on those

@RobMoir That and the ponies.

but Im happy to contribute that maybe 6 percent of my wage to be sure I will never have the chance to die because my insurance doesnt cover an ambulance

not "my" gotan but this is more of the great orange doll in action

http://users.breathe.com/kadamontaga/others/gotan/gotan.html

@LucasKauffman I'm 100% dead serious - When I had my dead-short-stopping-my-heart thing I got a bill from the hospital 3 months later because Oxford denied the ambulance trip from my house to the ER.
(pun not intended, but there it is anyway)

I cant imagine that :/

12:27 AM
oh no the ambulance transports you - they have to by law.
Your insurance company just won't pay, so the hospital bills you.

@WesleyDavid there's always room for ponies

like and when you arrive at the hospital they have to help you aswell if its urgent right ?

And they actually had the brass balls to tell me I should have called for pre-authorization.
Um, hello - ***I*** just had a multi-thousand volt shock knock me on my ass, and my buddy called nine-one-fucking-one, not your pre-authorization hotline.

@LucasKauffman yup. If you go in to an ER with an emergent condition you must be treated.

12:28 AM
@voretaq7 markdown rage

@WesleyDavid i'm past anger. what's the next stage of markdown grief?
depression?

I remember when I was in spain I cut the top of my finger and had to go to the ER to get it attached
they just wanted my ID

no.. bargaining. I went through that one too already.

@voretaq7 I was going to say "hostage situation" but okay, we'll go with depression if that's to your liking.

jezus

12:29 AM
editing posts to make Markdown happy. So now I'm on depression.
I'll be at Markdown Acceptance soon hopefully :P

scares me abit
gonna watch my insurance when I go to the states
I think Im only covered to about 2 million

@PeterGrace - you work for StackExchange. You have weapons. Can you kidnap the markdown guys and bring 'em to me so we can try @WesleyDavid's "hostage situation" idea?
Fix the markdown parser OR ELSE :P

but it does include a flight home if nescesarry =p

@LucasKauffman that's like one asprin in a hospital around here :P

Yeah, the typical conservative rage against so-called "socialized healthcare" is amusingly sad. However, I'm still against most of america's attempts at it because 1) Our scale requires slightly different methods than most European countries, 2) Our Congress couldn't properly implement toilet paper into their own asses with the use of both hands.
I'm skerred of how Congress is going to implement something like that.
So instead, I'll just move to the Netherlands.

12:32 AM
@WesleyDavid Medicare. For. Everyone.
It's not that hard.

Why the netherlands :p ?

ಠ_ಠ

The Medicare system is fucking AMAZING and it operates with less than 10% administrative overhead.
Just start scaling it up by lowering the age of enrollment every few years. (that solves the only real problem anyone ever brings up: the system couldn't handle the influx of covering everyone ZOMG RITE NAO!)

@LucasKauffman I like the culture, really. All my dealings with Dutch folks have been great. They seem like sweet people. Their laws appear to be largely sane. Overall a lovely place.
Except for being cold.

I think the medical care is expensive not because people are making profits on it; but because of the amount of profit :p

12:34 AM
It didn't make it past 68F today and I'm cranky as a result. And it's January. So... my liklihood of surviving in Netherlands is low.
I might have to try Australia, except every living thing there has a high likelihood of killing you painfully.

Im in belgian and its not that bad :p

Sierra Tango Foxtrot Uniform.
I had snow today. SNOW! ::sobs::

@LucasKauffman My research points much blame on insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies.

I agree

Oddly, I have that version of the alphabet taped to the side of my monitor.
Who me? Deal with offshore tech support? Nahhh...

12:36 AM
theres nothing wrong with making a profit, but its like you will not get a private jet or just 2 or 3 cars instead of 7

@WesleyDavid I force every support tech I work with to learn the NATO phonetic alphabet.
and I yell at them if they don't use it.

What do I want for dinner?

I had oysters
you can go for that
or a nice curry

I had sushi today, I try not to gorge on seafood too much.
perhaps a burger of some kind...

12:40 AM
or a steak
I would love a midnight snack right about now lol

hmm
steak would involve a long trip

or a nice pasta
like a carbonara
with cream and white wine
nom nom nom

A: Why does laser printer maintinance not fall under the scope of SF?

pauskaWe try not to generalize, but the subject is just too wide. There are a plethora of manufacturers and models, and every model differentiates. Some of them requires you replace almost 90% of the printer just to fix a broken drummer/roller/burner, whilst some of them are heavily modular where you ...

did I go a bit off topic here?
(we're in printer hell now, with 5+ small cheap printers at each of our 80 locations, switching over to 1 MFP per location)

nah
it would probably be the same if someone asked, how do you maintain your server hardware

@voretaq7: sorry, I just had to edit your m.sf post :(

12:54 AM
or how do you maintain your HP servers
it would get closed as well no ?

@LucasKauffman Yeah, or "how do you maintain your server"

@pauska whyfor sorry?

it kinds of depends if you have a tower model with NO hot swap parts versus a HP DL580 with 8 hotswap fans/disks/whatever
@voretaq7 did you see my edit?

@pauska nope, I'm using up my votes for saturday :P

oh nm, its sysadmin's post
btw
I dont get that town hall signup thing
who am I?
what participant is me?
@RebeccaChernoff helppppp

12:56 AM
@pauska Rebecca's survey? There should only be one row you can edit :)

@voretaq7 do I log in somewhere?

(so one that's editabe and a bunch that are locked)

sorry for being a retard, just got home from celebrating my aunts 50th birthday

if you click on the link in @RebeccaChernoff's email it should pop you in automatically (or maybe it did for me because I use my gmail account as the openID for Stack Exchange?)

oooh am I the bottom one? the "your name" row?

12:57 AM
<- might be a bad example because of that :P
Yeah -- select your times, type your name & whack enter :)

what timezone is this? :[

Actually, @RebeccaChernoff -- can we edit our availability? (I don't even recall what I set but I know I made it wide)
Best guess for Norway Time zone is CET
according to google "Norway time zone"

CEST actually
or well
we're not in summertime.. so yeah, CET

@pauska I will continue to refer to my timezone as EST5EDT until tzdata pries the alias from my cold, dead, lifeless fingers.

@voretaq7 who was the dude who insisted of getting a $time_of_day variable here? Iain?

1:00 AM
you don't have to sign in to fill it out
if you need to edit, just fill it out again. I'll assume your most recent entry is correct. just re-fill it out completely.

so the link identifies me?
I didnt see any log in option etc

@pauska not sure

@voretaq7 the master queen is present

@pauska I think we identify ourselves (by typing our names?)

oh. well that I did.

1:03 AM
besides what's wrong with gettimeofday()? :)

oh you were the one
:D

OK, saturday's votes spent (until the reaper deletes the -1'd questions) -- Now I'm off to find that burger. BBL possibly :)

guys Im off to bed, have a good night/day/evening/morning

gnight
bah, am I the only one who thinks the unix/linux site is BS?
why do we have it? we already have ask ubuntu for gui stuff (everybody who asks gui questions on linux runs ubuntu anyways, slackware people figure out things on their own)
I dont want a SF site where people only ask windows server questions..
@RebeccaChernoff stop doing those reversed smileys. It makes my brain hurt!

1:13 AM
:[
@RebeccaChernoff can you atleast check if my .. calendar thingy went through?

wee.
btw, I've never even watched a town hall chat. What does it involve?

torturing the nominees
I mean, um.
oops >_<

:<
well
good luck torturing a sysadmin
I'm pretty confident that we've heard it all before

I have my ways.

A: What to filter when providing very limited open WiFi to a small conference or meeting?

Ben WhitakerUsing OpenDNS will not block torrents. It will only block their ability to find new torrents online and add them to their queue. If they walk in with 5 torrents halfway done, and then link to the LAN via WiFi, wham, all of the torrents will resume and take all available bandwidth. A careful ...

what a weird answer (I already flagged it as suspect)
he basically answers it pretty good, but then he adds the final sentence which pretty much is a spam alert with a big red blinking light
the OP is asking how he can stop/qos torrents, and the dude says that the same router can run torrents at "full-blast"

3:28 AM
@WesleyDavid - nice to see you're at it again ;)
Except if you keep flagging my own questions I might have to put you into timed suspension

If the gods smile, something like that can greet you too young man.

Is that some sort of proverb?

If I repeat it enough, it just might become one.

Bam queue clear

I wish we had an tag so we could burn the lot.

3:34 AM
Thanks to @WesleyDavid I'm catching up to your flag total for the lsat 30 days @sysadmin1138
But I seem to get stuck at about -60 from your total
And yet I close more, comment more, vote more, edit more and delete just as many as you
So... are you just dismissing them all? ;)

@MarkHenderson Hah. I do dismiss quite a few.

Well to be fair there's a lot of crap flags that come through

There are one or two flaggers on my rota that I probably should have a talk to about what does and doesn't need a flag.

Geezus @WesleyDavid is still at it

I noticed.

3:39 AM
@MarkHenderson OHAI

I swear you wait for me to come back from wherever it is that I've gone and start flagging

@MarkHenderson Should I wait for SysAdmin∞ to go to bed before I expend my last flags? =)

Do you have me GPS tagged or something?

The flags are coming from
***inside the house!!!***

Hey, what happened to your name? You're showing up as @WesleyDavi

3:41 AM
It's a length thing.

Oh yeah Im only "mark" now
They musta changed it

@MarkHenderson Different screen size than normal?

Ohh yeah I am actually
1366 instead of 1920
My wife stole the desktop computer so I'm on the laptop
Fuck me are there going to be any more questions left open on the site when you're done @WesleyDavid?

There is a lot of retroactive faq-continuity to rewrite.

@MarkHenderson You would not believe the search query I just stumbled upon 60 seconds ago and all the crap it brought back. =(
I'm crusading against shopping questions at the moment. Only 5000+ more to go...

3:46 AM
fwiw if the question has a crapload of views, Im just leaving it be, or protecting it

@MarkHenderson Good to know. But... I figured that views or not, if it's not a fit for SF, it would be better to at least consider closing it for the betterment of the future.
Recall the "Favorite Server Name" debacle.

Hence the locking
It has a clear statement "dont use this question as justification for more questions"

And if there are a lot of upvotes in questions, and not the 'upvote for teh funnyz' I'll lock/protect/leave as appropriate.

Locking vs closing?

I love these questions with unlinked owners, no vote,s no answers and 15 views

3:48 AM
Locking is like closing, but with a bigger hammer.

Okay, so here's one that I'd close in a heartbeat, but look at the views and votes:

Q: Hyper-V vs. ESXi vs. XenServer

Bart SilverstrimCan anyone share their experiences (for example, this was great! This failed miserably!) with using the Hyper-V, ESXi, and XenServer virtualization platforms? Cost? Management? features? Handling load and backups and recovery? And also minimum server requirements? I thought Xen was a free virtu...

Exactly

@sysadmin1138 Strange, I thought locking was a ballpeen hammer while closing was the circus mallet.

And loads of people are after that comparison
Its dissapointing that in our strictest sense it's off topic
Problem is it has kinda rubbish answers

@WesleyDavid Locking means the OP can't whinge about wrongful closing, and no one can earn rep from that question anymore.

3:49 AM
The accepted answer tested hyper-v, esxi and xen and chose Xen

Yeah, there's a lot of good questions, but it's like ordering seafood in Iowa. Good idea in general, but totally not the place you want to be ordering it from.

To my mind, that's heresy
I've had too much experience with all three of those systems and I would never choose Xen in a billion years

Actually, I ordered seafood in Ohio. Repeatedly. Talk about the definition of insanity.
SysAdmin14652346457657 - here's one that's merely protected that I nearly flagged:

Q: Alternatives to Splunk?

MichaelGGI'm pretty impressed with Splunk, especially version 4. Pretty graphs, alerting (Enterprise only), and fast, accurate, searching. It's a great product. However, the cost just way too high to consider for full production use for our company. All we really need is to be able to index different log...

Thoughts?

I've been wondering when you'd find that one.

Splunk is so exprensive, I hate it when everone recommends it

3:51 AM
I've been thinking about it for a couple days.

I almost had a heart attack when I saw their pricing

To me it's so full of shopping I'm surprised Kim Kardashian hasn't shown up in it.

Me too, but then the OSS alternatives were far worse for what we needed it for at OldJob.

Gotta love this:
Q: Does anyone know of a free solution to perform failover for VMware ESXi?
A: Buy the proper licenses.

That one is deserving of the Historical Significance lock. It's highly popular ("Splunk is expensive, there's gotta be something cheaper" is as much of a FAQ as "VMWare is expensive there's gotta be something cheaper") and drives traffic to us.

3:53 AM
Damnit the amnoubnt of shit people think belongs on SU

Okay, how about this one. Good question, good discussion, but it belongs on a forum, not SF:

Q: What is good Server for a small office: Apple, Windows or Ubuntu?

StealthI work for a small organization ( 15 employees). We are currently looking to setup a in-office server for file sharing, networked backup, calendaring, contact sharing, and remote server management capability. We operate in a mostly Windows environment, with a couple of Macs. I have been looking ...

You know SO asked the SF mods if we wanted a question about F5 BigIP and SOAP handlers, we didn't respoond in time, so they decided it was a good fit for SU
Thats a crap question
iF YOU NEED TO ask that question, you're not a sysadmin
You choose whichever platform you're familiar with

@MarkHenderson Yeeesh. F5? That's here.

Muhahaha! I'm getting you to close questions even though I'm out of flags. >:-E

I didnt close it though ;)
It had reasonable views so I locked it

3:56 AM
I'm being told it is bed-time. So I think I shall.

@sysadmin1138 Fight the power!

Haha ok
Cya

Or not.
Night!

If he's being told it's bed time that probably means he's about to get laid

@MarkHenderson Oh leave me to my juvenile ways, you grown up.

3:58 AM
Thats ok my wife just burped, farted and them goes "Ohhh gee that's a stinky one"

@MarkHenderson Does she have a sister?
=P

The joys of marriage
Nope she has two brothers ;)
(which explains a lot)

Well hell, now that ErikA is in the running, my dreams of mod hammering crappy questions are gone.
Then again, I get to torment more mods with my flags! *cackles*
Oh, and I get to have a try at a gold badge for 750 flag weight.

One of the biggest factors in my voting is when people are going to be online
In which case one of my votes at least will be for you
That and to get you off my back

I vote for a person's character - so I won't be expending a vote on myself. And that's not hyperbole. =)

4:01 AM
I'll be voting based on the activity I see the person doing
Booyah now I'm only 40 flags behind greg
