Oh!
Downloading...
@cornbreadninja Beyond expectations!
Almost everything sounds very good.
I can't hear the sch very well because of the speed and the quality of the recording.
And there is something about the first vowel that sounds a bit foreign.
But, if you had shouted this into an old radio receiver in 1944, the Dutch might have let you sneak behind their lines and blow them up!
So what do you think of this guy's accent?
The "professor", I mean. Not the presenter.

@Cerberus !!!

I'd like to see Tchrist top that.

@Cerberus he sounds almost convincingly New York/New Jersey.

You think so?

@Cerberus I don't know why it was so quiet. I will try again.

12:13 AM
He seemed to be getting better after the first few sentences.

He sounds like somebody specific.
Trying to think of who.

To me, he sounds mostly a tiny bit artificial, but I can't hear any Dutch accent, except when he says "people" in the beginning.

Why does the presenter have such a small shirt on?

I don't know...
I'm not a huge fan of it either.
But it is not unusual here.
For younger people.

@Cerberus how did you open it?

12:16 AM
My browser played it. But then it had trouble replaying it, so I just downloaded it and played in VLC.

@tchrist why doesn't this damn script work?

@cornbreadninja Because it hates you.

._.
they want me to write a C shell script, but I have a Korn shell. That should still work.

Somebody wants you to write a C shell script?
You are pulling my leg, right?

12:19 AM
@Cerb

UNIX for programmer and users, Glass/Ables

@KitFox Well done!
Did it take you as long as it took me?
I was going over the Siberian heartland over and over again.

ksh and csh use a very different syntax.
Read my FAQ.

I tried to vi it and change to #!/bin/ksh, but no as Bronson said, no dice.
wait, wait

#! not !#

12:21 AM
is it because I didn't make it executable?

@Cerberus I've no idea.
How long did it take you?

Well, it won’t run unassisted otherwise.

@tchrist sheesh
k brb
hot damn.
Where's that spanking machine? looks around
I'd like to read your FAQ regardless.

@KitFox I don't know...I think I took at least five minutes to browse Siberia proper, then Wikipedia'd Siberia, then quickly went over the coast lines in the east that I hadn't covered yet. Then a few minutes maybe.

Probably longer then.
But I was distracted with non-sleeping child.

12:24 AM
Valid excuse.
Perhaps it took me longer too, I don't know.

Now I'm going to play Clone Wars unless anyone has urgent matters that need mod attention.

But this was perhaps the first time I actually wanted to know where a photo was taken, so that was nice.
OK have fun!
My urgent matter has been dealt with.

The Criss-cross question has been supercolidered. Now like everybody is going to show up. I’m holding out for Burt Lancaster.

Isn't Yvonne DeCarlo in This Island Earth?
no! It's Lily Munster.

user19161
@corn I forgot to ask, have the braces been removed? Or maybe I asked already.

12:28 AM
@WillHunting yessir!
I ate Skittles at the movies!

user19161
@cornbreadninja It must feel quite weird now.

user19161
@cornbreadninja Yes, I know you watched Batman.

@WillHunting It feels great!
I still want to poke out my teeth after everything I eat.
By which I mean use an interdental brush resembling a small evergreen.

user19161
@cornbreadninja Like that piece of cake I see in your pic.

@WillHunting Mmm. :D

1:04 AM
A Resting Spell, microfiction for tomorrow's Writers Chat, for anyone who wants a read. About 600 words.

1:15 AM
@KitFox I like it.
Some tantalizing bits of information are given that suggest a complicated story / next chapters.
The complexity in these 600 words is just right, no more and no less than the format can bear.
Now we want to know more about the demon.

1:36 AM
You know about the demon. You are one.

1:50 AM
@KitFox 0_0

looks around What?

@KitFox Nice.

@KitFox: I read that, and if you want my input on it I'll share it with you tomorrow, time permitting.

@Robusto Sure. You could come to the chat group if you like. I'd be pleased to have you join us.

What time?

1:55 AM
Um, we changed it recently. I think 1pm our time.
But we are rather broad. Sort of noon to sometime around 2:30.
Whenever people show up and feel like talking.

We'll see. My new boss arrives tomorrow, so it's anything-can-happen day.

Yipes.
Understood.

Night all.

Good night.

I'll let MGMT play me out ...

1:57 AM
Nice.

user19161
@Robusto Nice drawings. My pictures are worse than a first grader.

2:11 AM
I listened to Electric Feel instead.

2:40 AM
@KitFox It's very good, but does she have to be called Rachel?

user19161
@DavidWallace Why not? It is my favourite name!

@WillHunting I think your favourite name should be David.

user19161
@DavidWallace No way!

user19161
But do watch the movie I am David. It is very good.

user19161
And you can read the book too.

2:42 AM
Can I?

user19161
The book was my literature text in school. It is about a boy who escaped from a concentration camp and travelled across Europe to find his mum.

In that case, I probably can read it.

user19161
@DavidWallace Yes, I am sure you can read anything that I read. After all, my vocab is only at 18,000 words according to testyourvocab.com!

My goodness, I'm starting to sound like an entirely different person.
I shall keep telling myself - I am David.

user19161
@DavidWallace Also, you are a King.

2:53 AM
Oh, @WillHunting, you're a real gem!

3:10 AM
@DavidWallace Hello.
Y you dislike Rachel?

@Cerberus Oh, am I in trouble?

@DavidWallace No...the name leaves me cold.

No, I like it. Just not in that story.

I was just wondering whether perhaps there was something special about the name to you.

No, I don't think so.

3:17 AM
Hmm OK then.
How are your paintings hanging?

What brings you here at 5am?
Most of them are parallel to the floor; thanks for asking.

Good, good.
Not parallel to the walls?
Or the ceiling?
@DavidWallace Mmm nothing.
And you?

3:36 AM
I'm about to be parallel to the floor.

I have to go to school tomorrow.

Me too!
UNIX class
Is it your first day?

Yeah, first day of grade/year 11.
The first day of my last two years in HS.

Is this a surprise?

3:47 AM
no
you seemed wistful

Junior year is the best high school year.

maybe because you're standing in the middle.
Start planning your senior prank.

@tchrist Well, that's come and gone.

@Mahnax I thought you have two years left?

No, that was sophomore year. :P
@tchrist I'm writing scripts all over the place.

3:49 AM
@tchrist This year, and the next.
HS here consists of grades 10, 11, and 12—10 is junior, no?

Do you mean that your best year has come and gone, or that Junior year has, or that your second to the last is?
Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior.
Sometimes grade 9 is in Junior High.

There are a few US schools where middle = 7-9

Junior comes after sophomore?

mine was just 7 & 8

Mine was just 7&8.

3:51 AM
So which one gets skipped for a 10-12 HS then?

I don’t know whether there are places that do 6-9.
I don’t know. I haven’t ever been in one of those.

I dub thee a junior.

The idea is for the four years of high school to have the same names as the four years of college.

@cornbreadninja Ew.
Sophomore sounds so much more sophisticated.

You know what it means, don’t you?

3:52 AM
That's because they both start with 'soph'.

Check its etymology.

Don't be sophomoric! :P

Interesting.
Wise and foolish.

Yes.

I still prefer the term sophomore.
But noöne really says those things here. It's just "grade X" for the most part.

3:55 AM
How the crap did Yankee Doodle Dandy get in my head?

> How the crap…
Interesting construction you've got there.

I was trying to be marginally polite.

Grade is less cool, because the names sound like the college names.

aw, I missed it

I was just saying something about there not being a need for politeness, but it was wrong.

3:58 AM
aitch-ee-double-hockey-sticks

That was a popular one here.

Time to brush mah chompers.

wats the use? u most probably gonna eat a mid-night snack anyhow.. :P
(or is it morning there?)
I usually do that.. brush my teeth and then get a snack at some point later in the night :D ... my dreams get me hungry...

Uh-oh...

What?

4:16 AM
Midnight snacks...
I have actually installed a silly exercise/food application on my phone.
I know, lame.

At the moment, it's called "breakfast" for you.

Heh.
I haven't eaten in hours!
Aren't you proud?

Sure.
I didn't eat dinner.

Why not?

Work.
When I work, the food there is too sickening for me to eat.

4:18 AM
You're probably thin anyway...don't you eat at work?
Really?
You never liked fastfood?

I do, but after ten months, it gets gross to be around.
@Cerberus I do sometimes. I'm not necessarily thin, but I"m nowhere near overweight either.

@Mahnax Hm I understand.
@Mahnax Yeah, I mean thin as in not fat.

@Cerberus In that case, yes.

We chubby people need to disparage you, don't you understand? Some straw to clutch.
My BMI is in the centre region.

Ah, you're not chubby.

4:20 AM
But it's always a struggle.

@Cerberus Mine too, I think.

I should really lose 10 pounds.

chubby ppl need to get fit.. most of the diseases affect that lot..

Well, thanks.

don't u think?

4:21 AM
But chubby is not fat: just a tiny bit fat.

yes... cute fat...

Well, yes, some people may find it cute, hehe.
Do you know many fat people in your country?

Me, or Shyam?

Both.
I don't know any young people who are actually fat, not well anyway.
Perhaps one or two of the kids we teach.

I don't know any fat people personally.

4:24 AM
Right.
But then, what counts as fat?

Well, I'm not sure.

@Cerberus fat ppl.. sure.. not many are overweight here though.. chubby yes... but maybe one outta five are fat...

@ShyamK Ah OK. Well, it depends on your definition, I guess?

aah.. good thing.. keeping fit (well sort of) is always good.. more fit.. more stamina.. more fun.. :D

It's usually the poorer people here who are overweight, on average.
@ShyamK Absolutely!
But it can be hard work.

4:26 AM
@Cerberus poor ppl here are thin like bones.. the rich folk here indulge.. mainly fast foods are to blame..
@Cerberus ya I was thinking of trying to get six-pack abs at one point, then I decided it was just too much work :D
so I went back to eating sugar :D and chocos :)

@ShyamK Yeah, it's funny how money has many bad effects on people.
@ShyamK Hehe.
Understandable.

money is the root of all that is evil..

I disagree.

explain...

> Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
—Alfred Pennyworth

4:34 AM
@Mahnax U qouting Batman ?

@ShyamK Yeah.
If I were a heinous villain, I wouldn't be doing evil for money.

hehe.. well that is true.. some guys are just plain nuts..
@Mahnax if?
ain't you one already?
:P

@ShyamK I'm not currently a heinous villain.
@ShyamK You don't know me, why would you make such an assertion?

was joking.. duh!!!
@Mahnax but money would be an added advantage?

@ShyamK Nah.

4:48 AM
where would u get all the money for all your evil schemes?
gadgets and all
??

Well, I'd need that, obviously.
But I wouldn't hoard money and roll in it.

aah.. so money is the root of evil :P

Nope.
Why do murderers murder?

for money.. :P

Not necessarily.

4:52 AM
for the fun of it?

Yes.

cos they're crazy...

Money can do good things, too.
It pays bills, buys food.

everything has a good and bad version..

Okay, bed time for me.
Good night, guys!

4:53 AM
see you at snack time :)

Bye!

Hehe noooo...

G'nite (for now)

poof

5:04 AM
^ hmm.. still not gone? Apparently magic is not his strong suite :P

5:44 AM
@cerb are you tipsy again?

He may well be asleep.

he's supposed to get up any sec now.. for a snack (hopefully)

Let sleeping dogs lie?

I have never known Cerberus to lie, in this chat room.

@ΜετάEd Sleeping Dogs? the game? :D

5:58 AM
@ShyamK Sadly I am not familiar.

its a game.. if you're into that sort of thing..

Ah, thank you. Judging by the splash page, I'll probably give it a miss :-)

hehe
cool.. Polly wants a cracker?

6:19 AM
rawk

:D

2 hours later…
8:44 AM
In case you're interested, @robusto, I am the location scout for Breaking Bad, ask me anything.

1 hour later…
9:45 AM
Anybodyo hierio?

soy hierro
@tchrist being a man, I definitely don't want people to know my gender

I'm here too.. nice to meet you @Gigili

@MattЭллен And I don't care about it at all as a woman.
@ShyamK Oh, good.
Does this sentence make sense: "I couldn't attend the conference due to some issues despite my great interest and I owe you an apology for that. Could you please guide me through the payment of $50 to attend proceeding?"

> Could you please guide me through the payment of $50 to attend proceeding?
that doesn't quite make sense
what are you trying to do?

Like I missed the conference but I'd attend the proceeding.

9:57 AM
and you need help in making the payment?
help using the system that takes your money?

Yes, exactly.

> Could you please guide me in paying the $50 to attend the proceedings?
when you say proceeding do you mean later conferences, or some set of proceedings?

Later conferences.

Yay! Thank you, Matt.

10:00 AM
> Could you please guide me in paying the $50 to attend the others?

You were always a blue to me.

awwww. thanks

10:37 AM
I'm done close voting for the day

@DavidWallace No, probably not.

hiya @Kit :)

Morning.
Hullo, sweetie.
You folks ready for Writers chat today?

ready... I've not done the exercise, but I'm ready to chat!

Sweet.

10:42 AM
How are you getting along with your EL&U blog article?

coughs

:D
Well, there's no rush.

You've had articles pouring in, haven't you?

I'll put you fourth
@KitFox I've got 3 ready to go, and cornbread ninja is working on hers

I'm just a bit behind what with work and Writers stuff and all.
Plus, I've managed to get myself completely confused about apostrophes, which is quite a feat for me.

10:46 AM
!!

I started thinking about them too much.

have you been dreaming about them? That could be an issue

uh, no.

How do you make that subscript apostrophe?

but I am down to two weeks until this release's launch, and we'll probably have to delay it, and so work is unhappy.

10:50 AM
oh, that's not so good.

Yeah, and I'm tired and have a meeting today.

I hope it goes OK.

And I want to bitch at the project lead because he did something wrong.
But I won't.

hmmm. sounds like that's for the best

A project lead has higher authority than you do (right?).. better not get on his bad side :D

10:54 AM
@ЯegDwight I really want to talk to Vince Gilligan. But that would probably bring the Reddit servers down too.

I've discovered that the muscles used for walking up hill and cycling are very different to the muscles used to walk down hill/down stairs. I know this due to pain. Currently I go down stairs backwards.

@MattЭллен Yes. Try walking up a mountain sometime and thinking "it's all downhill from here."

@Robusto hahaha. ye gods no, don't make me think about it. At least I learned to run downhill. It's so much easier than walking downhill

@MattЭллен I usually end up tripping on something and then rolling all the way to the bottom..
:(
