Because of differences in perception of relative sizing.

@KitFox it all comes down to "for each step, just press A- in Powerpoint".

I wish you wouldn't say things like that.

I am fresh outta fixing PowerPoint slides that were horrible beyond even Powerpoint. We discussed.
And I am fresh out but for the fact today was the deadline. I don't consider my job to be done by any stretch of imagination.

You have my deepest sympathy.

I'll take two of those please.

3:02 PM

Yes! I know that! The orange and the blue are the same color!

@tchrist I don't think that's good enough for me to reverse my vote. Adding "and why" as the last two words might help. Or might not. But it only needs two more votes.

@AndrewLeach I strongly agree with you.

@tchrist Except that one is a lie.

@tchrist oh are we discussing that one? But it is a dupe.

3:04 PM
@AndrewLeach How is that not a duplicate?
Jinx.

Go ahead and reopen if you want to create extra work for me.
Or Kit.

No.

I don't intend re-opening it.

It should be re-opened and closed as a dupe.

Well I would reopen it to close as dupe instead. But again: work.

3:05 PM
But then I'd have to find the dupe.

I'm sure that sort of ambiguity has already been covered.

Jinxes all around.
Free jinxes!

Get out of my brain please.

Everyone get one!
@KitFox right, that is why your head is such tilt.

@RegDwigнt so tilted or such a-tilt.

3:06 PM
@KitFox much right! Very thanks.

That's twice in three years.
My regulars make more mistakes than you.

Which according to my pocket calculator is OVER BOOBS.

Your perfection is your biggest marker.

Gawd, I cannot abide stupid QA people who cannot speak or write English.
Or is that a redundancy?

@KitFox er, but that was on purpose...
Looks like I suck at this doge thing.

3:07 PM
No No it wasn't.

Is that what you call it, doge thing?

I made it a point to skip a meme when the doge thing came out.

Cool. Which meme did you skip? Is that why you're not rickrolling?

No. I skipped the doge thing.

3:09 PM
Jesus Tchrist everyone so series this day.

I am thousand shades of grey.

Don't get 'em in a bunch.

Sopping wet panties.
Bag of wet panties.
That reminds me, I have a story needs writing.

Needs written, you mean.

Needs warshed.

No Polish capitols in this chat.

needs warshed when the devil spills gravy

Careful, you're almost talking to me.

3:11 PM
Warshed is like watershed, except without the te.

@KitFox Well there's almost no one else here.
So who the fuck am I almost talking to?

See, that's why I never come to your company BBQ.

And that's why I never have a date.

wow there's so much blue in this chat

Vous venez ici parceque il n'y a personne qui parler anglais?

it's as if you've walked into a private shop

Ou parceque chacun est en panne?
Damn. Faltered there at the end.

I come here to inspect the room's configuration. :-)

@MattЭллен A local shop for the local people.
You seen that?

I assume so, Dave

We had a "french" tag chez Cosette so I was wondering whether there was an "english" tag here.

3:23 PM
@StéphaneGimenez Est-ce qu'il y a quelque chose que...oh. No.
Nous sommes sans tag.

Et c'est mieux comme ça !

Ouais. Je suis d'accord.

Hello @Arrowfar.

user116848
@KitFox Ms Fox is that you?

3:24 PM
Yes.

Cool

Which language were you speaking. Spanish?

Or French?

French.

user116848
You can speak French?

user116848
Translation please :)

Or is that an etre one? Can never remember. Something with a house.
@Arrowfar She speaks it, myself, I eat it.

user116848
So you are a French then I guess?

Drop the "a". And no.

user116848
So "a" is not grammatical here?

3:27 PM
It sounds vaguely insulting. People are not things.

user116848
Ah.

Which is silly, because we use articles with professions and such.

user116848
"So you are French then I guess?" That okay?

But with nationalities and other things that are personal qualities, we usually drop the article.
Sounds less like a label and more like a descriptor that way.
@Arrowfar Yes.

user116848
icic :)

3:29 PM
:D

In this case French is just an adjective. No articles with adjectives.

user116848
Hi! skull and Stephane

hi pal

@StéphaneGimenez Is that the reason? considers this

@StéphaneGimenez what's the biggest difference between the french spoken in france and quebec?

Pronunciation and expressions. Grammar and vocabulary is basically the same.
(Except for questions maybe.)

Voulez vous-tu aller danser ? is a no-no in France.

Did you notice my dialect?

You mean, according to the few sentences you wrote in here ?

3:36 PM
@StéphaneGimenez I'm not sure that's how it'd be said in Quebec

(Definitely not.)

@StéphaneGimenez Yes.

@StéphaneGimenez Are you from Quebec?

From France.

I can't spell anymore and my pronunciation was never very good, so what I remember in my head is probably pretty not exactly correct.

3:38 PM
From the south, but I also spent some time in Lyon and Paris.

I think the -tu gets attached to the verb, not the pronoun.

On the other hand, I have never heard Voulez vous-tu aller danser before.

14
Q: Should we use the second "tu" in Québec?

ShazQuebecers often something like a second “tu”. For example: T'as tu un crayon ? I just don't know how to use it, like in what kind of expressions/sentences/questions? or if it depends on the region?

But I have heard Vouvous t'aller dansing.

@StéphaneGimenez I think its use with vous is rare. I'll have to pay attention more when I next speak to my relatives in Quebec.

A: Should we use the second "tu" in Québec?

KareenLike Joubarc mentioned, there is no need or convention about this way of speaking. I could maybe compare it to some people saying y'all in English. As far as I know, this construction seems like the amalgamation of the two ways of asking questions in the second person singular: 1- Formal: Verb+...

I agree with that answer.

3:43 PM
iirc there is an old saying that goes: to learn the history of France you should learn the French language, in the same way as to learn Physics you should learn Math, the language of Physics.

@skullpatrol If that were true nobody could learn history about any place other than places that speak their own language. Also you could only learn the history back as far as the language is still intelligible to you. A few centuries too old and it'd be meaningless.

Zoe
So, what language do women speak? Cat?

I think it goes the other way: to learn any particular language it helps to know some of the history of the people who speak that language.
@Zoe They speak the same? language as we do? except every phrase? sounds like a question?

Zoe
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 AH

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 you are taking a more historical approach to learning, in which the learner studies the original works of a topic to get a feel for future motivations in that topic.

3:49 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What? do you even mean? when you say that?

@KitFox It's like, totally a thing? Even language log? has written about it?

I can't imagine that's really true. Not for adult women.
Like, you know. Grown-ups.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 some educators are great believers in that approach

@KitFox I may be exaggerating? For comedic value? But it's called uptalk?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Like, I get it? You don't have to keeping saying it? Because it's kind of triggering me? right now?

3:53 PM
Alright everyone. Joke's over. Y'all are talking it too seriously.
It's dead, Jim.

My ex- made vicious fun of me for talking like that.
That guy was such an asshole.

well, I've got to run. Sorry for bringing up bad memories @Kit.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh don't take it seriously. No harm.

This internet chat room environment is unique in that way: how people switch from "joking" to "serious" within seconds.

The high rising terminal (HRT), also known as Uptalk, upspeak, rising inflection, or high rising intonation (HRI), is a feature of some accents of English where ostensibly declarative statements are uttered on a rising note of apology or inquiry. Actress Lake Bell described the style as an amalgamation of "valley-girl voice" (characterized by "upspeak") and high pitch. Valleyspeak or Valspeak is a common name for an American sociolect, originally of the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, in particular Valley girls. This stereotype, which originated in the 1970s, became an international fad for a certain period. Many phrases and elements of Valleyspeak, along with surfer slang and skateboarding slang, are stable elements of the California English dialect lexicon, and in some cases wider American English (such as the widespread use of "like" as a hedge). I hate it when an interviewer asks you what salary range you are looking for and then when you give them some numbers, they quickly say “Well that seems perfectly reasonable.”

Yeah. Me too.
I'd much rather that they choked on their tongue.

Exactly.
Next time I’ll obviously have to add 20%, and repeat until the choke-point.
@KitFox Nothing wrong with dating a duchess.

Of course, last time they told me that it was reasonable, I still got an offer that was considerably less.
@tchrist Hmm, I haven't.

4:32 PM
@KitFox Oh really!?
That is not reasonable.

Well, few Ks less.

Well a few Ks less would put me at my previous annual salary, which I was not happy with and told them as much.

It was still 30K more than the previous job.

I asked for 10-25% more than I had been making, and that’s when they did the “perfectly reasonable” thing.
Perhaps they are used to hiring people who live in downtown London or San Francisco or New York. I dunno.

"To Serve Man" is a 1962 episode of the television series The Twilight Zone. The episode, along with the line, "It's a cookbook!," have become elements in pop culture. The story is based on the 1950 short story "To Serve Man", written by Damon Knight. The title is a play on the verb serve, which has a dual meaning of "to assist" and "to provide as a meal." The episode is one of the few instances in the series wherein an actor breaks the fourth wall and addresses the viewing audience at the episode's end. I have nightmares almost every night.
Just woke up shouting again.

Do you want to talk about it?

Nope, it doesn't affect me though.
It's just weird that it is so frequent.

Are you on meds?

Yes. Still the same meds.

Maybe that's why.
I had a lot of nightmares on certain meds.

5:39 PM
Grabbed a burger and charged the battery

Aha. I am thinking of going off them.

I dreamt about killing people and being killed and stuff.
Really not fun.

I often dream about people abusing me.

What is the name of the meds?

Then I will shout "Stop abusing me!" then I will wake up, lol.
It is very loud when I shout!

5:40 PM
@JasperLoy Yeah, I had dreams like that, and dreams where I would intentionally put myself in those situations.
Very odd.

@JohanLarsson I have tried several.

What are the nightmare ones?

Well, I am currently on clomipramine.

I am trying to remember which one gave me nightmares.

Ok I asked gf, she hands them out left and right at work. She had not heard any complaints about nightmares.
That does not mean much though.

5:47 PM
I can't remember what the last one was called. That's so weird.

@Jasper are you willing to test a thing?

Hi

I was on prozac and then wellbutrin and then something else, and then one more and the last one worked.
Hmm.
@JohanLarsson Might be misperceived as relating to depression.

How do you mean misperceived? The drug is an anti depressive right?

Right, but if you think your nightmares are from being depressed, you might not think they are related to taking the drug.
mirtazapine, that was it.

5:52 PM
Meds are best mind control medicine
Nothing more

Yes, good to control the mind that is out-of-control.

@JohanLarsson Test what?

I have a theory on|for|??? how I can ~treat~ you

Well, go on.

For four weeks I want you to:
- Be outside while the sun is up > 2 hours per day
- Go to gym/walk/run/we for ~1 hr per day.
- Eat healthy food, lots of fruit veggies and fish meat.
- Sleep at least 8 hours per night.
- Brush them teeth morning & evening.
Are you used to lifting weights?

6:00 PM
Haha, thank you. I used to lift.
You are right I guess, all these things will definitely help.

Great then you can do aerobic exercise one day and lift weights the next.
@JasperLoy I'm taking it one step further and think it is impossible to not feel great doing that.
You live in Singapore right?

@JohanLarsson Yes.

Pretty hard to find places to walk in the nature there right?

One can just walk anywhere outside I guess.

@JohanLarsson on

6:06 PM
I am going to eat a burger now.

hahaha

@KitFox ty ty
@JasperLoy Ideally you need this. Three days with heavy backpack will solve all issues for a month..

Shit, I need that.

@JohanLarsson People who suffer from depression don't feel great even when they're doing things that make people feel great.

Everybody needs it.

6:12 PM

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Often you can't be arsed, even if you think it will work.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The idea is to jumpstart them endorfines.
Endorfine is probably very similar to most antidepressants.

@JohanLarsson No doubt those activities may be the only thing missing from certain people's lives. But others with depression won't get any relief from that sort of regimen at all.

And getting genuinely tired helps sleep and gives appetite for healthy food ime.

@JohanLarsson It is much, much, much more complicated than that.

6:14 PM
ok /my advice then.
@tchrist not sure. Actually pretty sure it is a way forward.

@JohanLarsson Moderate exercise has been shown to be as effective as SSRI regimens alone in treating cases of mild to even moderate depression. Only in that regard might they be considered “equivalent”, and it is a very limited sense. The effects on neurotransmitter production and consumption, and on retention of new brain cells generated by stem-cell centers in the brain itself, are not equivalent.

6:21 PM
@tchrist There are also the effects on sleep, have you ever had trouble sleeping after a days hiking? And eating etc.

@JohanLarsson Exercise and SSRIs are both sometimes effective at treating certain forms of depression, but that is the only similarity.

@KitFox Who's to say you don't?

Y'all should just work from home, with your desk strategically situated right next to your backyard patio. I'm working, but breathing the fresh air, and listening to birds chirp, and neighbourhood grannies shout at their grandchildren.

She refuses so far and the reason is that it will be 400 km drive to horse jumping competitions.

@JohanLarsson how far by horse?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I have a view of the front yard.

6:28 PM
I give up.
@ermanen You “proved” no such thing. If native speakers find it ungrammatical, then you lose the argument no matter what you dig up. And we do. Please stop being stubborn; you must recognize our authority as native speakers and stop looking for loopholes in the letter of the law. There is no collective noun for thunderbolts or for lightning strikes in English either, which means your question can have no right answer. It’s just an opinion-based list question, a subjective beauty contest with no end in sight. — tchrist 4 mins ago

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 hmm, ~250 km is my guess.

@JohanLarsson Problem solved, then.

@KitFox good enough!
@JohanLarsson Just ride a horse to the competition.

What is the horse is tired when he gets there?
I can try suggesting it though.

You guys are better at seeing possibilities than she is

You could also get a small aircraft.

Or a big fridge.

@JohanLarsson I have been thinking of starting an exercise schedule for the past few years, but never got down to really doing it. One needs to find a lot of motivation to start.

6:40 PM
@JasperLoy What I did, to break that cycle, was force myself to do just 5 minutes in the morning.

@JasperLoy Promise us all here in chat that you start today.

Surely there's no excuse for not doing 5 minutes of exercise, I thought.
Turns out there ARE excuses. But the point is that it still gets done, some days.

You should hire a team of rugged men to pull the horse in a trailer.
I could oil them for you.
