Whenever you learn one thing, you will realize that there are ten things you did not know.

"Whenever you learn one thing, you will realize that there are ten things you did not know.": it happen to me also!

user19161
There are things you think you may know, but then 9000 years later you realize you have been wrong.

user19161
So we must always keep an open mind.

Therefore you do not never realize that! @WillHunting

awe
10:45 AM
@Carlo_R It happens to me too...

@Gigili If this technique worked for Cerberus, I would thoroughly recommend it. Cerberus is one of the very few people I have encountered whose English vocabulary exceeds mine. The fact that he is not a native speaker makes it all the more impressive. So if you want to learn vocabulary, do whatever Cerberus recommends.
Oh crap, she's not even here.

'Please respond at your convenience' is an okay thing to say, right? Or is it only acceptable to use the slightly more pushing 'Please respond at your EARLIEST convenience'?

Depends on the context really.
"Please respond at your convenience" means "whenever you feel like it".
"Please respond at your earliest convenience" means "I want you to answer me now, but I'm trying (and failing) not to appear too pushy".

11:04 AM
Ah, I am in no hurry so I should probably be using the first form.
Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated!

@Chris No problem.

user19161
@DavidWallace Did you take the test at testyourvocab.com?

user19161
I just took the test there and got a score of 18,000.

user19161
11:19 AM
I remember everyone else beat me the last time.

user19161
Wait, 18000 is twice of 9000!

you scored OVER 9000!!!!

user19161
@MattЭллен Boo!

Jul 17 '11 at 18:54, by Jasper Loy
I retook the test, and got 14, 800. So I hereby declare that my score, taking the average, is 14, 600!

user19161
11:22 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 I was more liberal with the check marks today.

user19161
Let me take it again and be very strict.

user19161
OK this time I got 14,200.

user19161
So taking the average I have 16,100.

@WillHunting I did take it. I can't remember my score. I think it was around 23000.

Feb 20 at 11:14, by David Wallace
That site that Vitaly gave the link of estimates my vocabulary to be 32900. I feel cheated.

11:30 AM
Thank you, I just found that and was about to post it.

Anytime!

Oh well, I was off by less than 10000, so it really doesn't matter.
But Cerberus allegedly scored 34400. So I was correct in saying that his vocabulary exceeds mine. Damned three-headed canine pineapple.

in War Metal Tyrant, Jul 17 '11 at 17:45, by RegDwight
So we have Vitaly at 25k+, myself at 30k+, z7sg at 33k, Cerberus at 34k+ and Rob at 42k+.

Rob == Robust0 ?

Jul 17 '11 at 16:49, by RegDwight
Hey pips, everyone please take this test. For science!
@DavidWallace No, Robusto

user19161
11:33 AM
@Vitaly Hahaha.

i ken haz kofee?

@Vitaly Yeah, private joke. Also prevents him from finding me backstabbing him if he ever searches for his name.

user19161
@KitFox There you go, one full pot!

@WillHunting thx
@Vitaly Do you happen to remember my score? I think it was around yours.
getin kofee brb
ug! cup iz grosses!
mus needs washin

@KitFox I wouldn't have expected you to grow a mus!
@Vitaly Why am I suddenly thinking of Gladys Knight?

11:41 AM
@Vit New chapter today, right?

Jul 17 '11 at 17:37, by z7sg
@RegDwight I got 32,900. What do I win?
Freaky coincidence!

Is that what you got?

Yes.
Maybe the purple unicorn and I know all the same words.

Must be.

@KitFox Actually, no, I don't. My first 5 months (or so) of continuous interaction with anyone are almost invariably blurred.

11:45 AM
I am looking, but haven't found it.
Maybe I never said.

OK so this is what the search engine gives me:
in War Metal Tyrant, Aug 17 '11 at 20:23, by KitΘδς
@Cerberus I think so. I think I was around 25,000.

Oh, I was looking in the wrong room.

But you seemed not to be sure whether you've actually taken it.

Maybe I should take it now.
pokes brain Are you awake, brain?

Oww, don't poke me!

11:48 AM
spins ratchet on vocab center You charged up, vocab center?

In any case, I'm not awake, and I'm going to bed. 'Night all.

Night.

@awe Ahhrg...! I always confuse 'too' with 'also'! For an Italian speaker it is difficult to understand the difference.

@DavidWallace Night!
@Carlo_R They are the same in that context though.

11:57 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 I prefer the latter!

Hmm. 39,500. Not what I expected, and really not what I remembered.
Probably skewed by our discussion of the vocabulary words after the initial fervor.
@Will This was a good call, and also really funny.

Q: "I will" or "I shall"

ParagI have learnt in school we should use shall with I, you and we. But I often see people saying I will, you will or we will. Is this correct?

Dupe.

@KitFox so do you have an internal "generic human" concept that is invoked whenever you interact with someone unfamiliar? if you do, what's it look like? genderless? mid-30s?

@Vitaly When I am interacting online without any useful cues, I tend to default to someone with my approximate statistics.
Usually male, though.

And offline?

Well, it depends on their appearance.

12:06 PM
Hm. So no for offline, I guess. Thanks.

No, because I have an instance in front of me.

Well, if you were at the negative end of the sociality spectrum, your "generic human" model would still be put to use: you'd lack the circuits to process the clues in front of you, unless you were trying to do so consciously.

Oh, I generally do so consciously. It is helpful.

I think most people actually default to something like a "generic human" when they are in a crowd, there are just too many clues to process.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that.
Interesting.

12:12 PM
That would explain some of their behavior...

So here is an approximation of my generic representation of @Reg (except he is younger and wears glasses). And here is my approximate representation of you, except you are quite a lot younger in my head.

:D

Those are just physical representations, of course.
But I am sidetracking from your actual exploration.

Well, this isn't helpful because I don't see what's so special about them (and neither looks like any of us :P)

Well, in my head, they do.
Those are generic Russians.

12:16 PM
Ah.

That's what I have pasted in the spot where your face goes.
Hmm. That sounded a bit creepy.

do you have our pictures stuck to your office walls?

N-n-no.

You can use my Shepard's face. :P I tried to model my Shepard on myself, but the editor isn't quite as flexible as I would like it to be.

12:18 PM
Shepard's face?

Mar 16 at 2:23, by Vitaly
user image
@KitFox it's customizable in ME3

I had no idea.
My God, the breast physics are just not existent, aren't they?

Hahaha.

It's like those programmers have no idea how breasts actually move.
Oh.

wait, breasts aren't balls of gel?

12:20 PM
@KitFox Aka silicones.

@Cerberus Not even, my friend.

@Vitaly Hmm I imagined you younger and not so dark.

@KitFox Ivan G'Vera does wear glasses in one of those photos.

> the editor isn't quite as flexible as I would like it to be

I imagined him with smaller breasts

12:21 PM
@KitFox With the cheapest fillings...

Maybe, just maybe, if she'd had a double mastectomy and then implants.
Because those go under the muscle tissue.

Heh.

Image not found.

That is how you picture Kit?
Or yourself?

12:22 PM
referal denied

Oh! hahaha

Slow.

12:23 PM
Actually, that looks strikingly similar to my mother in her younger years.

Heh.
Nice.

I still think I approximated @Vitaly reasonably well. Shorter face perhaps.

I don't remember how I pictured you.

More broody, though. Vitaly is definitely broodier then Boris Lee Krutonog.

He may look like a light-hearted fool.

12:26 PM
I picture Kit as a buxom pinup style woman

Heh.

Funny that, since I have been one.

My picturing skills are good!

I picture all of you as looking exactly like your gravatars

excellent

12:28 PM
Square?

Oh.
Shapely?
By the way, haven't you seen pictures of us?

That's not me. I can't find any of my pinups right now.

@Cerberus aren't your gravatars pictures of you?

Hmm...

12:29 PM
I imagine you have a better figure

@MattЭллен You are deluded.
:P

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have only one, and it is a drawing of me, not a photo.

@KitFox perhaps

So haven't you seen pictures of any of us?

@Cerberus plural your

12:30 PM
I'd have probably imagined Kit as a woman of dignified embonpoint, had I not seen a picture of hers.

Oh, the royal plural, of course.

I've seen a pic of Matt on his site.
And a pic purportedly of Kit's boobs.

Nothing else?

@Vitaly Aww. Thanks.

I think you and Vit are the only people here I have never seen pictures of.

12:30 PM
Oh, and JSB as Aslan

Huh?

@KitFox You are welcome!

I have a very clear picture of MrShiny, but I have no idea why.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, do show us a picture!

It's probably nothing like him.

12:31 PM
@KitFox lego figs have a distinctive look

This is JSB
Aug 12 '11 at 14:20, by JSBᾶngs
user image

oh yeah :D

Right, but he doesn't look anything like that now, or so he claims.

Really?

@KitFox Yeah in reality he's all dirty and old.

12:32 PM
Hahaha.

You really want to see a pic of me? really?!

His eyes are as I imagined them.
The rest is a bit wilder.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes! Yes!

so you're reposting old pictures of me now?

@JSBᾶngs Nobody believed me

12:33 PM
Any picture! The usual caveats will be heeded, such as that "this really isn't a good picture of me", "I look much better in reality".

hey! I'm actually wearing that same shirt today

is that MrShiny? in the flesh?

Wow. I was nearly right, except for the hair.

amazing

12:34 PM
Nice!
I would have expected more hair, and different eyebrows. The rest is conforming to specs.

The goatee comes and goes, depending on whether I'm evil or not.

mentally shifts MrShiny into the Nick category

Who?

Someone I know who looks vaguely like MrShiny, and therefore must have the same personality traits.

Anyway, image removed so that searching for me is slightly harder

12:36 PM
@KitFox Same here.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 i would assume that you're always evil, no?

I used to work with someone who looked exactly like him.

@KitFox Of course.

@JSBᾶngs only when I have a goatee

@MrShinyandNew安宇 keep the goatee then, obviously

12:36 PM
You should get Mahnax to post a picture of himself sometime.
I've only seen the upper half of his head, but he looks adorable.

@JSBᾶngs Well, I have it now. So that pic is apropos.

Now he's going to beat me up.
I mean, cool.

after school. and steal your lunch money

Yup.
Just like him.

12:38 PM
Ah that's Nick?

you're very manly, Kit

That's Nick.

I like Mrs better.

Em1
Is "text" countable? less text or fewer text???

12:38 PM
Less text.

@Em1 Not countable.

Non-countable.

@Em1 depends

Fewer texts.

Em1
thx :)

12:38 PM
I have received 14 texts today

Yeah if you add an -s, it's countable.

@MattЭллен Ah, right. There are two kinds of text.

I want your article to contain less text

Em1
ok, I mean one long article with text in it

Believe me, @MrShiny, you are waaaay better off in the Nick grouping.

12:39 PM
@Em1 then, yeah, Like Kit says. Less text

Em1
fine. thanks all :)

@MattЭллен Are you sure that they wasn't textx!

@KitFox I'll take your word for it.

@Carlo_R :D I am the teacher!

Well, my Canadian grouping leaves something to be desired.

12:40 PM
@MattЭллен :)

Nick was one of my BFFs when I was in grad school.

Aww.

@KitFox really!?

Tss. This GD doesn't work as expected.

This is me in Trakai.

12:40 PM
awwwww

@RegDwightѬſ道 You're younger than I imagined.

OMG you are cute.

This is me in Holland.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Awww.

@RegDwightѬſ道 What beautiful baby

12:41 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Which canal is that?

I should have figured you'd know how to sail.

Nice boat.

@Cerberus one of the two you have there.
"Which canal". Seriously, dude.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Two million, you mean?

My point precisely.

12:42 PM
So you don't remember?

looks like somewhere near the intersection of 14th and 506th

Which region, then?

This particular picture? No. You could have just as well asked the name of that blade of grass in the back.

awe
@DavidWallace Are you native english speaker? I am Norwegian, and got 10800 on that test

@Cerberus close to the Ijselmeer.

12:43 PM
@Cerberus Holland can't you read?

@RegDwightѬſ道 Ah OK. Was it long?
And which side of the IJsselmeer?

@awe He is.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Holland is huge. So many regions.

Dude, that's like 15 years ago. You should thank me I remember it wasn't Belgium.

Thank you.

12:44 PM
goodbye, I'm leaving this chat.

Bye!

Bye!

@Cerberus just like a microchip is huge because it has so many transistors
cya!

@MattЭллен Exactly.

NÖÖÖÖ.
Okay, bye.

12:44 PM
@Cerberus the one with Holland on it.

Hi!

On the other side it's more like Britain.

Hi!

Nah-uh.
I remember where I was in Russia.

12:45 PM

Even which side of town the hotel was.

There's the top of my head when I was a baby.

left or right?

Aww.
Cute.

So you only need to mention appearances to get the whole room to post pictures of themselves. takes notes

12:47 PM
@Cerberus we navigated the channels for a full week. I really can't even remember on which day the picture was taken.

@Vitaly Your turn!
@RegDwightѬſ道 Oh, wowie. Very Dutch.

But we ended up around Amsterdam IIRC.

Good.

You probably sailed either along the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, or the IJsselmeer-IJ.

12:48 PM
@Vitaly If you think that's easy, try mentioning breasts.

awe
@Vitaly Good one..

brb

@Vitaly No! Please!

How does GD work @Cerberus? Or should I ask Vitaly?

GD?
General Development?
Grand Design?

12:49 PM
Greedy Daffodil.

Government Department?

Goomp Dang

Right.

awe
@Vitaly By the way, how is this (and a lot else here in this chat) related to English SE..?

You just lie down, close your eyes, and let it happen.

12:50 PM
@awe Remotely, that's how.

@awe We're typing in English, aren't we?
3
That's actually an improvement over some days.

@Cerberus What if I can't lie down?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 for now

@awe Perpendicularly.
@Gigili Then lie up.

awe
@MrShinyandNew安宇 That's generally one of the requirements in most SE sites/ chats...

12:51 PM
@Cerberus Sorry but you're not making sense.
I just asked you a simple question.

Aug 9 '11 at 0:51, by random
This room was placed in timeout for 2 minutes; the topic of this room is "aka The Incomprehensible Room" - conversation should be limited to that topic.

@awe экшуалли ю кен тайп ин кирилликс хир эз лонг эз ит из стилл ин Инглиш.
4

@Gigili That's all right, I didn't mean to.

@KitFox damnit you beat me to it again!

bows to @Reg's greatness

12:53 PM
listens to the sound of five people firing up Google Translate, in vain

@Cerberus GD = Golden Dictionary

@RegDwightѬſ道 What is хир? For?

@RegDwightѬſ道 hilarious

@Cerberus here

I need to learn Cyrillic, precisely for that kind of genius.

12:54 PM
it makes for a great russian accent when you read it out loud

Ahh.
I was thinking chir, but that didn't work.

@awe It may be a requirement of the site but it's not a requirement of this chat

In the sentence I mean.

@JSBᾶngs this is how I have to do it IRL. I can't speak with a Russian accent, so what I do is I imagine all words spelled out in Cyrillics, and read that aloud in Russian.

And shouldn't it be сирилликс?

12:55 PM
@Cerberus not with a Russian accent!

@Gigili How it works? Well, it is a dictionary reader.
@Vitaly A Russian accent turns s into k?

@Cerberus er, no. the word in English is cyrillic, not cyrillics

@Cerberus the Russian word is кириллический

What do you want to know about GD exactly?

all of the cool slavs use glagolitic anyway

12:56 PM
@JSBᾶngs That c was Reg's.
@Vitaly Yes, so?

@Cerberus oh, you're right. REG MADE A MISTAKE OMG LOL WTF

@Cerberus so a Russian who still has a thick Russian accent in English would think that it's how the English word is pronounced

@JSBᾶngs I don't think so: I think he was trying to imitate the wrong word as used by a Russian in English...

@Керберус, the joke killer.
2

@Vitaly Hmm I see...

12:58 PM
Now I want to hear Russian accents.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Joke aнaлaicep.

Q: Possessive form of "one of [a list]"?

jtbandesWhich of the following is more correct? Or is there another form I'm missing? We drove to the movies in one of my buddy's car. We drove to the theater in one of my buddies' cars. We drove to the theater in one of my buddies' car. I suppose the fundamental question is: does this phrasing...
