5:00 AM
Has everyone died after listening this 👆?
Hi @JohnRennie

@Fawad Morning :-)

Alhamdulillah someone is alive

5:18 AM
Well, it's 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning in the UK - about midnight in the US. Everyone west of the meridian is asleep :-)

user228700
I too am alive! Morning :-)

Morning :-)
Uh oh. One of the key servers is down at work. This doesn't look good ...

user228700
I've been on a streak of making good cups of coffee for about three days now!

user228700
@JohnRennie :-( Damn, it's Sunday.

Well, if the server is down I can't do any work :-)
I can make coffee and listen to the radio instead!

user228700
5:24 AM
Haha, there's the silver lining.

Well, this is going to be interesting.

user228700
?

Last night about 500 servers that I look after installed Windows updates and restarted. There are always a few problems to I have a busy Sunday morning once a month while I sort the problems.
But ...

user228700
Hmm?

The key head office server that does the monitoring and reports the problems is down. So I can't check the server status reports.
All I can do is page the engineers - who will be fast asleep right now - and try to get them to fix the problem.

user228700
5:31 AM
Oh wow. Double trouble, as it were.

So, it's going to be a quiet morning for me, but when the engineers get things running again i'm going to have a very busy time indeed. Oh well :-)

user228700
Sheesh.

We generally configure all the servers to update and restart on Saturday night, but our head office servers to update and restart on Sunday night, specifically to avoid problems like this.
I suspect someone has configured this key server to update on Saturdays, and something has gone wrong with the update.
Oh well. Quiet morning then. So what's the weather like in Chennai? :-)

user228700
Ah...

user228700
My coffee tasted so good this morning that I am now contemplating making a second cup. This decision is going to prove unwise only tomorrow when I start craving a second cup so early in the day and then my headache decides to take things into its own hands by forcing me to make another.

5:37 AM
I must admit I love my first coffee of the morning.
I make it very milky and not too strong so it's more comforting than a stimulant.
I got my new laptop BTW.

user228700
And I must admit that my coffee is all milk.

Just coffee and milk? No water?

user228700
@JohnRennie Ooh, nice. How is it?

user228700
@JohnRennie Precisely. Well, and sugar as well. Two teaspoons full.

@Kaumudi.H very nice. It a huge great massive thing that weighs a ton - it's more of a mobile PC than a laptop. But that's exactly what I want for when I'm woking away at my Mum's house or at my brother's house.

user228700
5:40 AM
Cool! :-)

@Kaumudi.H So how do you make it? Heat the milk and grounds together than filter out the grounds?

user228700
@JohnRennie Heat the milk, pour into glass, add one spoonful of instant coffee powder, two teaspoons of sugar and stir for one minute.

Aha, with instant coffee so you don't have the bother of filtering it. Sounds great :-) I use half and half milk and water. Heat the milk, add the instant coffee then top up with the boiling water.

user228700
Ah. I'm not too sure if I'd my coffee with water in it.

Well, I don't know what to do with myself now.

user228700
5:45 AM
I've decided to go along with my mum and cut my hair after the exam!

I'm usually working like a fiend at this time in the morning.

user228700
:-/ You're an adult, don't you have several others jobs to do?

I could clean the house, do the washing, weed the garden, ...
Or i could sit here and surf the Internet :-)
Guess what I'm going to do.

user228700
:-) The latter, I bet. The former set of jobs sounds too exhausting to do on a Sunday morning. I like to do chores like cleaning toward the evening.

I don't like to do the chores at all. I used to have a cleaner do the house but she quit to get married.

user228700
5:48 AM
Yeah, you told about the cleaner who quit. Not been able to hire a new one huh?

Haven't looked to be honest. It's one more of those things I must get around to doing some time.

user228700
Ah :-)

user228700
Same old over here except that now I am ever more excited for Wednesday to roll around so that I can cut my hair!!

Is BITSAT on Tuesday?

user228700
On Wednesday. Mum says we'll have my hair cut on the same day.

5:53 AM
In the West cutting your hair used to be a sign of mourning.
Though I doubt you'll be mourning the passing of the exams :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, wow, I see.

@Kaumudi.H well, that's going back several centuries.

user228700
Right, right.

user228700
I'm kind of tired of my useless hair so it will be a welcome change to have it cut nicely.

I seem to remember some discussion of your hair style (being male I pay little attention to these things :-). You used to have a bob then grew it long?

user228700
6:01 AM
Haha, no, not bob. I had it even shorter than a regular bob.

user228700

user image

user228700
Wow, now I am gaining a better picture of exactly how bored you are at the moment :-P

I'm not really bored :-)
I have some more setting up to do on the new laptop, or i could even answer some physics questions.

user228700
Since you've asked, I'll torture you with further details (:-); I plan on keeping the same length but having bangs.

Pressure of work has meant I haven't been answering as many questions as usual recently.

user228700
6:04 AM
Ah.

I checked your profile picture but the hair length isn't clear. It looks a bit longer than shoulder length at the moment.
What are bangs - you're tying firecrackers to your hair? :-)

user228700
That would be correct; it's about 3-4 inches below my shoulders.

I suppose I could google it ...
... oh it's a fringe.
Bangs, also known as a fringe, is a shaped cutting of the front part of the hair so that it lies over the forehead. Bangs are usually cut fairly straight at or above the eyebrows, but can also be ragged or ruffled, spiked up with hair gel, mousse or wax, swept to one side or the other, or cut longer to fall over the eyes. == Terminology == The term bangs originally referred to hair cut bang-off (i.e. straight across at the front), although the term is now applied to diverse forms of hair stylings. It is probably related to bang-tail, a term still used for the practice of cutting horses' t...

user228700
@JohnRennie Haha, now I've given you something completely useless to do! x'D

user228700
@JohnRennie Well, yeah, sort of. A fringe that covers your whole forehead.

6:08 AM
I grew my hair long when I was a student (men did that sort of thing in the 70s) but my main memory is that it was a lot of trouble to keep clean and untangled.
I much prefer short hair as it's far easy to maintain.

user228700
Oh, interesting! Ah, yes, we girls are used to the maintenance so we hardly take notice of it anymore. Well, those of us who have hair.

user228700
In other news, it's Mother's Day here (and in most other places)!

My hair is quite fine, so when it was long it used to tangle really badly. I had to use a lot of conditioner to stop it tangling, and that made it rather lank. All in all it was a bit of a pin.

user228700
Ah...

@Kaumudi.H for some reason the UK has mother's day in March while the rest of the world has it in May.

user228700
6:11 AM
Yes, I know. Strange.

I should probably ring my mother anyway and wish her a happy US Mother's Day.

user228700
:-)

Ha! As we were talking about you cutting your hair someone has posted a question titled Proof of length contraction :-)

user228700
It's interesting that we also celebrate Mother's Day in May; we usually follow the U.K.

user228700
@JohnRennie Hehe :-)

6:21 AM
Long hair? Leibniz was far ahead of us. He had the swag upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/…

Damn hippy! :-)

6:59 AM
The S*** is still going

The amazing thing is that there is still a remote execution vulnerability in SMBv1 even though the code is 23 years old. Yes, 23 years - that code dates to Windows NT 3.1 released in 1994. You'd think they'd have debugged it by now.
Actually it's even older than than as it stems originally from a now forgotten networking system called Lan Manager released in the late 80s.

user228700
7:54 AM
@JohnR: Still not able to do work?

@Kaumudi.H Aha! The engineer has fixed it!

user228700
Great! :-)

Now I can start work - though I might have a coffee first.

user228700
Have fun :-)

Q: Please down vote questions carefully

mmesser314First, valid points are made in both Down-voting questions: Please state your rationale and Snobs and down-voters. That is, we need down votes because they discourage poor posts. And it is helpful to have a good attitude and thick skin when you get a down vote. That said, we need to not overdo ...

user228700
8:07 AM
Wow, I've just discovered a few audio files of my 2.5 y/o self!!

Hello,

I am having some trouble understanding complete sets of compatible observables. Specifically, how do we know the set is complete?

I think I understand some of the given examples, such as ${\hat P_x, \hat P_y, \hat P_z}$ being a complete set for a free particle since they allow us to uniquely label all states, but i'm struggling to see the argument needed to generalise this to any situation

8:30 AM
Recently, this old video have been spreading like wildfire:

9:14 AM
Anybody have any more input on this question? It seems to mysterious to be left unsolved. physics.stackexchange.com/questions/80995/…

2 hours later…
user228700
10:52 AM
@JohnR: Say, for how long have u been hanging out in this chatroom? (No, not today. In count of years, I mean)

user228700
Ah, too busy with work, I guess :-) What with all the problems this morning.

@ACuriousMind Timo Weigand was here this week, I sadly missed his talk but I heard it was great
He's still in Heidelberg, isn't he?

user228700
11:10 AM
@Kenshin: HEY, I've skilfully managed to find out your real name ha! (:-P)

user228700
(Skilfully=By accident)

user228700
Yello again!

Sorry, I had the sound turned off and didn't hear the ping.

user228700
Ah, I see. No problemo!

user228700
11:13 AM
As a result of you turning off the sound, I have now found out what Kenshin's real name is so that's one good thing that came out of it :-P

Actually I didn't used to use the chatroom very much. But following a few bust-ups in the room the mods asked if I would become a room owner and help police it.
Though as it happened the room settled down pretty much as soon as I became a room owner so i've hardly had to do anything.

user228700
(I may or may not have spent 20 minutes sifting through the transcript)

user228700
@JohnRennie Ah, I see. These chat sessions go back a long way, I see...

I tend to leave a Chrome tab open for the chatroom, so I'm in the rooms for hours and hours but not actually taking any notice of it unless I hear a ping or something else attracts my attention.
So what's Kenshin's real name?

user228700
Yeah, I figured.

user228700
11:17 AM
@JohnRennie Hehe, don't you know already? U were also present in the conversation whence I found this piece of information! :-P

I was?

user228700
You sure were.

user228700
Do you remember a guy called Chris?

user228700
Not Chris White. Just Chris.

I remember Chris Columbus

11:18 AM
the movie director?

user228700

@Kaumudi.H No

@Slereah that's one damn good director

user228700
Hehe, I will freak him out by referring to him as "Chris" the next time he comes here x'D

he did make the Goonies

11:22 AM
No-one has yet worked out my secret identity. By day a mild mannered middle aged computer nerd, but by night ...

home alone always ever

user228700
@JohnRennie Well, I've found this out as a direct result of my tendency toward chronic procrastination but at least I'll get a good laugh out of it the next time he's here x'D

user228700
@JohnRennie Stupendous man! :-P

by night Laptop Man! I fight evil by buying second hand laptops on eBay.
(It doesn't work very well)

user228700
@JohnRennie Clearly :-P

11:25 AM
I have so far failed to stop acts of global terror like the Eurovision Song Contest.

user228700

user228700
I suck

I guess I don't really care what Kenshin's first name is ...
... so I didn't commit it to memory.
Not that I'm denigrating the many hours of research you put into this :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Neither do I, really :-P But I reiterate: I am gonna have fun freaking him out.

user228700
@JohnRennie :-/ 20 minutes. I discovered this by accident. I was looking into the history of this chatroom just for fun.

11:27 AM
@Kaumudi.H It's got to be better than revising :-)

user228700
Sure is!

Some time later, I will be going to check the history of all chatrooms I visited as now knowing that Mos Eisley can go puff out of existence, I cannot risk having all the acorns I have buried throughout SE to be vaporised

user228700
Hmm, why did Mos Eisley "go puff"?

@Secret the room is still there, and you can still view past chat logs.

But isn't when I try to click it it just give me 404 error yesterday?

11:31 AM
@Kaumudi.H the room got a reputation for people behaving badly. It was closed a while back then reopened, but people kept misbehaving. A few days ago the SE management closed it for good.

user228700
Oh, wow, I see.

@Secret that link works for me. I wonder if it's restricted by rep or something else.

probably a rep thing cause only 10000+ rep users can see deleted rooms if I recall

user228700
@JohnR: I also managed to find the first time you spoke here. And I guess DavidZ has been around from the very beginning. I'm not a stalker, I swear; was just procrastinating

Luckily, everything I have discussed in Mos Eisley, slereah knows thus the acorns were not lost
(NB to decrypt this message, replace "slereah knows" with the actual plaintext)

user228700
I need help

@Secret if you want me to dig anything out of the chat log let me know.
@Kaumudi.H You really don't want to revise :-)

user228700
Yes :-(

hahah. how come i don't remember that passage from naked lunch

@Kaumudi.H how did you find out?

user228700
11:36 AM
@Kenshin Dammit now my plans are ruined. Didn't think you'd come here today :-(

what plan
s
lol no need to tell everyone
can u pls delete

@JohnRennie I am not very sure, the only acorn I have memory of is the deusch ponzer spacetime discussion I discussed with the Mos Eisley guys, which can potentially be found if you type "time" as said by "Secret". If there are any other acorns, I am afraid the search is goign to be quite tedious since you will have to crawl through search terms x where x is all 26 letters of the alphabet to find anything else

user228700
...sure, but dude, it's there in the transcript.

from previous comment replies or how?
where

user228700
Scroll up.

11:38 AM
btw, my chat id is 134719

how did you find out I can't see it

user228700
@Kenshin Can't you see it in the picture?

(since there are now 3 secrets in the SE chat)

user228700
(And dude, chill. It's only your first name; and a fairly common one at that)

Aug 16 '15 at 15:58, by Secret
hi, first time here, lol
This is when I first joined h bar

11:39 AM
@Kaumudi.H oh i see it
that's weird how it has my old name there with my new dp

and also where I actually spent my time in the SE community

user228700
Yeah, it is. I used to have my full name on here before so if anybody is as motivated as me to do absolutely nothing, then I bet they'd be able to dig that up as well. And in my case, it's even worse; I have a unique name and am quite easy to Google.

user228700
...although, Googling me (something I've done while procrastinating before) only leads you to my profile on this site so eh.

that's arlight thou
cos ur nice here
so ur reputation will remain intact

user228700
Haha x'D I guess.

user228700
11:44 AM
...I don't usually have to worry about future schools/employers digging up nasty crap or anything. I'm pretty "nice" most everywhere :-P

yeah while i speak my mind too much ehre
if I try and enter politics one day, some guy is going to dig out all my comments here and use them against me lol

user228700
@Kenshin Ah. Joining politics is not something I've ever seriously considered so I'm good.

I am not afraid to speak my mind, because point no. 1, if you cannot handle my weirdness, you will nevertheless be consumed by it

me neither but u never know

user228700
@Kenshin U seem to have ur crap together :-P

11:45 AM
@Secret this is all I could find:

but I guess I can look at at Trump and see that anything goes

user228700
@Kenshin Exception, not rule. Dear God, at least I hope so.

@JohnRennie what is Valorum Himarm Poision?

@JohnRennie Yes, that's the deusch ponzer spacetime acorn I mentioned. I do not recall if there are other acorns. but if that's all you can find, then I guess I really have only left one acorn in Mos Eisley

11:47 AM
@Kenshin It's the old SciFi SE chat room that has been closed due to persistent misbehaviour by its members.

lol
what's with the Resurrection of old chats?

user228700
@Kenshin I started it as a result of chronic procrastination

ahh

i have no idea what the conversations of that room really entails.

is ur exam like tmr

user228700
11:49 AM
@Kenshin Nah. Wednesday.

@BalarkaSen I went there a couple of times to ask about science fiction, but no-one seemed interested so I gave up. I don't think it's any great loss to the world.

Me neither.

But, it is an object lesson to us all, and explains why the moderators here are quick to suspend people. The h Bar already has a bit of a reputation for being troublesome and we don't want to follow Mos Eisley into oblivion.

@Danu Yup

user228700
@JohnR: Oranges and salt are long gone. It's mango season!

12:26 PM
Do you have a reference where I can read about your scheduled room event Physics chat session?

Do I smell drama?
Can anyone donate Mathematica skills to the cause
Please

12:40 PM
@JohnRennie halp

12:50 PM
@0celouvskyopoulo7 Mathematica problem?

Computer problem

My experience of Macs is pretty limited, but ask anyway and I'll see if I can help.

It's just being slow

Slow to download, or slow response when you do anything?

slow when I'm doing anything with mathematica
took forever to download, took forever to verify the download, taking forever to open

12:59 PM
Don't know I'm afraid. A 3.3GB install image will be slow to download and verify, but once Mathematica is installed it should run at normal speed. I guess you can check if the laptop is running out of memory.
I'd try restarting the laptop just on general principles.

Ok, copied it to the applications flder
this is taking FOREVER
I have a good laptop
it works!
Time to do some GR
@JohnRennie what's a good tensor program
ok, how do i into mathematica

@0celouvskyopoulo7 You need to learn how to use computers

I know how to use computers just fine?
I don't know how to use mathematica though
I put in the code, what now?

Now you press detonate

1:27 PM
@rene There's...not much to read about, it's just a time where we try to meet and discuss physics and the site itself.

The Penrose smoothing for $\chi = 0$ is literally just the bump function I think
So it being a smoothing of that curve makes sense I suppose

I'm literally going through the mathematica tutorial right now
I will plot it in a bit
@Slereah yeah, I was thinking...
$e^{1/(x^2-1)}$ is the usual bump
So it's a radial bump function
And $\alpha$ is supposed to control the opening angle

1:43 PM
Pretty much
Proving that a bent bump function still joins smoothly though
is that trivial?
I'm not sure

It should follow the same proof that the usual bump function is smooth...

In QM, is it true generally when considering addition of angular momenta that $m = m_1 + m_2$ or is this the case only when considering elements of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients $\langle j_1j_2; m_1 m_2 | j_1 j_2; jm \rangle$ which vanish unless $m = m_1 + m_2$?

@Slereah ???

wot

That's supposed to be the curve
for $\chi=\pi/8$
Maybe that arctan isn't working out correctly with the various quadrants
