@EmC Also worth adding that you get the 1 rep you lost back when the answer is deleted.
Related to my most recent question on the site, I often face a problem where I expect people to let me know if and when I'm annoying them, and if they don't let me know and I continue to do the same thing, I think that they're the one to blame since they didn't let me know.
As I'm so reason-oriented, the only thing that can rid me of this mentality is if it's proved wrong with supporting reasons and evidence.

Q: How to best approach Akai?

Unknown UserI have a pair of Akai headphones. They have a long and a short cable. A long time ago the long cable’s jack broke. I was treating it fine and all. I contacted Akai, and they said they would send me an email with details for a replacement. I never got it. Recently, the short cable’s jack was wear...

Morning!
Just so everyone doesn't freak out soon: meta.stackexchange.com/q/315662/369802 We'll be getting the new design possibly Friday.

Morning :)

@Tinkeringbell Oh hey, they used PPCG for their trial run! That was smart; we code golfers will find every exploit and bug we can.

@Tinkeringbell I predict that everyone who hasn't seen the design on their favorite site will scream (because it's not what they are used to)
I can already smell the "it's ugly and confusing, change back!"

A J
Morning!
@Tinkeringbell won't make any difference.
@Noon I hope that they won't take away my favorite thing on one of my favorite SE sites.

5:18 AM
@Noon Heh. That's standard. I got a new chrome design yesterday, and I didn't like the tabs. Yesterday evening I was already used to it
@El'endiaStarman Well, let's hope you all did your job well!

A J
Change is the law of the universe. (Bhagavad Gita) ;)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I have that same reaction every time :P
@AJ What is your favorite thing on your favorite SE?

A J
@Noon The Movie Reel in the header on Movies & TV.

...I can't believe I never looked closely at that. Banner blindness I guess.
Impressive how many of those I recognize though.

@AJ Yeah, the header on every site is nice, I hope they will keep them too

A J
5:26 AM
You can even see the movie reel moving in the site's chatrooms when you scroll up and down.

Oh wow, that surely took a non-trivial amount of work to implement.

@AJ Wow, that nice! I didn't know that chat has a custom theme

JAD
6:26 AM
@Noon hmm, SFF was actually surprisingly positive. The meta was downvoted, but the responses were constructive
@Noon They tend to keep them in some shape or form, but a lot smaller
@Noon I think most/all sites that have their own theme do

@JAD Good to know, we just have to wait and see now :)

@Ash Since you like reading, did you try any novels from Indian novelists?

JAD
@Noon and given how little changes they make to the chat system, for better or worse, I don't think it'll change that quickly

JAD
@Mithrandir what now?

Hi @Mith (and everyone), I reviewed all items you linked

Q: How to improve relationship with uninterested coworkers?

StackDuckI'm not sure whether this is a question for the workplace or IPS board, but I think it's more of a inter-personal than work related issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong. About three months ago I started working for a rather big software company right after finishing university. I'm the only fem...

8:23 AM
@Tinkeringbell I'm an Edge user, but whenever I use Chrome I always use Canary, so I got the change several months prior.

@Tinkeringbell They were actually testing putting the "new tab" button all the way on the left (instead of to the right of the rightmost tab), but backtracked on that.

A J
8:37 AM
Yeah. I found about the Crhome's update when I used my phone this morning.

I had a funny problem yesterday

@avazula Well? Don't leave us hanging :P

As some of you know, I'm currently in vacation, wandering through Central Europe with my mother. We just left Slovakia, and yesterday we were in a tiny Slovak village and our air brb hosts didnt speak English, only the daughter
That's how yesterday morning I had to make the 80 y.o. grandpa understand that their dog has stolen my shoes during the night and that i couldnt find them

ahaha

Now I know 7 words in Slovak hahaha

8:47 AM
@avazula Google translate is such a good thing!

JAD
is that where they throw it through translate a bunch of times?

yep

@Tinkeringbell yeah, I was glad to have it. I was also stunned how we could understand each other a bit even without it. We came there to hike in the mountains (Slovakia is such a beautiful country!) and so he told me we should go there, and I explained (I still don't know how we managed to understand each other) that we already went and were stunned by the beauty of the place

JAD
eh, the first time they tried something like that it was kinda funny. It's cheap though, because it's pretty much guaranteed to fail

A J
8:52 AM
Google gives some funniest translation when I try to translate Hindi to English.

JAD
maybe I'm just too grumpy for that stuff

@JAD I think it improved a lot throughout the years, even if it stills needs work.

A J
So, never try to speak Hindi using Google Translation.

@AJ good to know hahaha

JAD
@avazula well, the guaranteed failure isn't something that's 100% google's fault. Different languages express things differently. So each step, you're losing context, allowing you to drift away from the original meaning

8:55 AM
@JAD true. Which is why I'm impressed how far they came

JAD
for single translations, definitely

TBH when it comes to English, I never use it (especially for idioms), I use Linguee, but i don't know if thats an international tool. Anyway, one should never only rely on translators to speak

JAD
never heard of it, but I don't use google translate for english

A J
Even when I say something in Hindi in chat, I usually give translation as well.

@Mithrandir SO is a huge fan of those videos

9:43 AM
Oh ips, how much I like it when you answer me <3
Please don't ever break again or my heart will too

@ElizB if you have some time, can you explain to me what makes you feel this question: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/18575/… was too broad? Unless it was a no-brainer to you and you can't rationalize it?
(Other people are welcome to answer)
note: there is also a meta question about it here: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3254/…

> You build rapport when you develop mutual trust, friendship and affinity with someone.
I find that quite a weird thing to do just for business, also, it's quite impossible when you're dismissing people as 'boring and have nothing in common with'
The trust might be doable, by just living up to whatever business contracts are made..
(Not really what makes it too broad though...)

@Tinkeringbell Based on what you say, maybe it's too broad because building a rapport is a long process which includes a lot of steps?

@Noon More like a few steps that you keep repeating?
I think the answer to that question is 'learn how to talk about stuff that you don't find interesting, learn to listen actively and show interest.'
People sometimes just want to be heard, you don't have to jump into every conversation with stuff just tangentially related just to be there and hope to be seen
People remember you if you listen to them, even if you didn't tell them more than your name ;)

@Tinkeringbell That's certainly true for psychologists :P

1:36 PM
@Noon Hehehe, but those have to, they have to know who to bill!

XD

@Noon ping me later on, I'm in classes :) i dont mind looking later on

@ElizB Thanks, I will do :)

Good morning...I wanna make a pun with "IPS," something like "tIPSy people," but I'm way too sleepy to pull it off this morning. So good morning, world! :-P

2:37 PM
@TheTinyMan I'm not tipsy! (Yet). Good morning!

@Mithrandir @EmC if you were looking for a fun distraction: regexcrossword.com

@Tinkeringbell You should fix that!

@scohe001 :D :D this is awesome

Gotta keep you guys sharp so we get the best regexes possible for ips-bot :P

@TheTinyMan Heh. Maybe this weekend ;)

2:54 PM
@scohe001 Site seems broken for me. No CSS and every page looks the same.
This is a hex regex crossword puzzle that I really liked, and it definitely significantly improved my regex knowledge and skill: rampion.github.io/RegHex

@El'endiaStarman huh...what kind of black magic are you working over there?
Did you try Chrome?

@TheTinyMan sits back, sIPS drink

@El'endiaStarman holy moly this looks awesome
Are there more or is it just the one?

@Mithrandir That barely blIPS on my radar!

@scohe001 I am using Chrome.
@scohe001 There are probably other hex regex crosswords out there but I haven't hunted them down. There might be some on that regexcrossword.com site.
@scohe001 Opening it in incognito works. Odd. o.O

@El'endiaStarman I rest my case. Black magic.
@El'endiaStarman yea the site is full of them, but I was wondering about that huge hex puzzle

3:22 PM
Well, you know as much as I do now so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Haha fair enough. Thanks for the puzzle!

@El'endiaStarman maybe there's some browser extension or settings blocking it, that don't get run in incognito?
or when in doubt... shouldiblamecaching.com :P

Q: Cellphone-obsessed friend (and driver)

Alex BI have a good friend who, in my opinion, uses his cell phone too much while we are hanging out. During many conversations, sometimes concerning personal issues in which I value his o...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I might be that friend, at least on the road. xD
reads question no, never mind, I don't drive through red lights when multitasking

@TheTinyMan yeah, yikes D:

Any smartphone usage while I'm driving makes me really nervous because I'm so cognizant of how much awareness I lose when I look away from the road.

@El'endiaStarman So I have a problem - I have ADHD, and if I'm driving, I often get understimulated and start spacing out. I maintain that I am a safer driver if multitasking responsibly than if I'm just staring ahead.
And I find that multitasking on my phone is one of the safest things that I can do. Now, when I do that, I (or a phone-holding device) is holding my phone above the dashboard, with my head pointed straight forward, which people tell me is not how most people multitask on their phones while driving.

Yeah, that's what I do too if I'm using my phone at all. Minimize the time looking away from the road.

4:10 PM
@El'endiaStarman Yep. Seeing the road is important. xD

@ElizB When you have some time to answer and if you are still ok to do it, I'm still interested to know what makes you feel that the question (interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/18575/…) was too broad (I still have a hard time figuring out how to know when a question is too broad)

@Noon looks like someone else is curious too. Keep your eyes on the meta question they posted ;)

@IPSCommentBot fp

9:34 PM
@Noon Okay, i'm good now. had a okayish day, and i feel kinda moody at the moment and have a headache, but that's gonna pass soon enough, i hope.
Okay, i looked at the question and it's broad because it's asking for "how to build rapport with others?", and I felt it was not quite clear what within "building rapport" was needed the most. i consider questions that ask for a general term like "building rapport" "make conversation with X person" where the topic isn't known that well or the potential topics to build rapport on could be broad.

10:10 PM
Stomach's been especially grumpy today, too. :P :/

@Termatinator Good evening :)

Good answer :P

Haha, how are you doing?

doing okay. I got tea for my grumpy stomach.

10:35 PM
Oh damn, funny enough i just drank Some tea, but are you feeling okay?
I hate that autocorrect on “some” always makes the first letter a capital

ehh. it's alright, without going into too much detail, I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and some stress lately has made it flare up

Oh wow, best of luck to you then

@Termatinator thanks. it'll settle down eventually

I think I should call myself lucky that the only major thing that is affecting my life is my autism
