@ElizB was it you who recommended the Peter Hollens cover of Daughter of the Sea

user15026
I finally got around to it and it was incredible.

\o/
oops
Sorry, next time I'll move them to trash

1:33 AM
@Ash I got that recommendation from @El'endiaStarman ! :) It's pretty amazing, I know. He had it on repeat.... for at least a good 20-30 minutes

@ElizB I had it on repeat for a couple hours at work recently.

user15026
I really liked it

@El'endiaStarman almost spits up water Hours?! wow, heh.

user15026
They did a good job of the emotion in it

"They" being Peter and his clones?

1:35 AM
I agree. What i observe best are facial expressions, and when he did Skyrim with Lindsey Stirling, they really did a good job with the facial expressions- they had fun, while being "serious fighter mode" and "adventure mode" with their music and body language

user15026
@El'endiaStarman Yep his pirate clone army

@Ash I liked the different costumes, how creative he got with them
@Ash What other songs from Lindsey Stirling or Peter Hollens do you like?

user15026
I liked Lindsay Stirling's Radioactive cover, and her Zelda medley

@Ash Radioactive is my jam :P
Daft punk as well.

I think I have another cover of that...
Within Temptation has this album of covers - its in there ;)
@Ash her zelda medley was neat ;)

1:44 AM
@ElizB You probably shouldn't be eating radioactive jam.

@El'endiaStarman BUT THE WARM GLOW!

user15026
@JourneymanGeek I love Within Temptation

@Ash google tells me they have a new album planned.

@El'endiaStarman oh my gosh (facepalm)

@Emilie awkward isn't it ;)

Very much so!
I might have a question, not sure if the fit is good

Go for it!

"How would you let someone from a different culture (Asian, likely Japanese) know that they are doing something rude without putting them on the spot?"

ooh
very tricky

1:52 AM
context would be, I'm in Canada, ordering take-out at a small authentic restaurant and pretty darned pregnant. The clerk kept going on and on about "are you sure there is just one in there?" I could tell she wasn't ill-intentioned but a bit clueless

and not a "common sense" thing
@Emilie might also be age... older person?

I wasn't pissed (getting used to the comments) but I felt like it may be in her benefit to know that's not something one should do lol
hard to say but didn't look old, 30s at the most

(sorry for assuming gender lol.)
ah ._.

What's the relationship between you and this person?
That can decide a lot of the answers, how personal you can get

I'm a client, she is the clerk I'm giving the money to pick up my order

1:54 AM
If you want to try out the Sandbox that would be cool, there's tons of help you can get

so if I said anything I could potentially shame her in front of her boss

@Emilie its one of those situations though that unless you're a regular (which changes things), well...
its a bit of a throwaway thing

it's not a huge problem, it will solve itself in a few weeks when my huge bump goes away but I was curious how I could have handled it lol

@El'endiaStarman and I just watched that video you linked, @JourneymanGeek - Thanks! That was a pretty sweet metal song.

oh right you have a Sandbox

1:55 AM
it wasn't too harsh for me
@Emilie Yeah, it's relatively new.
Sandbox <-- Link here!

@ElizB I was on it, trying to wrap my head around how it works :) so you post your draft as an answer
and get feedback there until your draft can be posted in the real community?

@Emilie you got that right!

working on it, thanks! :)

@Emilie No problem! :)

I was introduced to the band Ayreon many years ago and I liked their songs because they do symphonic metal, which isn't is as harsh as most metal (which I generally don't like) and their albums have stories woven throughout the songs. Lyric videos for 01011001: youtube.com/…

2:07 AM
Posted if anyone wants to take a stab at it :)
@El'endiaStarman oOo symphonic metal click

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

EmilieHow would you let someone from a different culture (Asian, likely Japanese) know that they are doing something rude without putting them on the spot in their workplace? I'm a client paying for my take-out at a small authentic restaurant and quite pregnant. The female asian clerk is laying it on ...

Well, there it is! :P @Emilie I mentioned one thing, but am gonna be going to bed in a minute or two, so have a good night, and I will give more feedback tomorrow afternoon. Have a good night!

@ElizB Thanks! Replied but there is no rush, curious about the replies but also curious to try the sandbox
We could really use something like this in GD.SE for our critique questions though I'm not sure how we'd get new users to post there

@Emilie a few sites use use them - just point new users at them if their posts are not great ;)

2:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek But 1pt users can't post to meta right?

@Emilie oh true...

@JourneymanGeek awkward silence :D

lol, just remembering I've been here ages, and its hard to remember what its like being new ;)

I know! Different culture. I could reframe my question to "How do you let new users know they're being rude without putting them on the spot on SE" though my understanding is that would be off-topic haha :)
The sandbox reminds me of a study I read on special Help Rooms that were setup for SO at some point
supposedly the score for questions increased by 50% or something along those lines, I'd have to fetch the paper but it was a similar concept, a bit like mentoring

2:38 AM
@Emilie The community can ask for the Meta rep threshold to be lowered. IIRC PPCG did that so their Sandbox could be used by new users.

@El'endiaStarman So that applies to the whole Meta, not just the Sandbox Q right?
Hmm I'm starting to think maybe we should have that then

@El'endiaStarman There's also The Human Equation (lyrics in comments), The Theory of Everything, and Into The Electric Castle. All of them have quite interesting stores.
@Emilie Correct.

@El'endiaStarman wait, did you ping yourself 0_0

@JourneymanGeek Eeeyup!
You can also ping future messages, but you have to edit the message after the fact.

ahhhhh

2:44 AM
Every message has a unique ID number associated with it that is used to set up these reply chains.

@Emilie I've always felt that SE's basically kinda making a mistake not focusing on the new user experience in stuff like that
they have some great ideas (mentorship, and say the new user templates) but... ugh, I'd love to see follow up

And of course, it's not worth developer time to make sure you can't ping yourself (meaning not playing the sound or showing the (1) notification) because if you manage it, you did it on purpose, and not many people will do that.

@El'endiaStarman newp

That's one thing I've noticed, there seems to be a huge culture gap between what we expect of new users and to what extent new users are provided with the tools to understand all the intricacies of the system

It went from nothing to a constant marathon haha

@ElizB one of my cousins did that. Had a kid at 19 (I think?). The father left her when they discovered she was pregnant. Currently living off my aunt.

I can see it from the other side though, I sort of wish I had my kids a bit younger. Less risk, more energy and they eventually go to school so it does leave some time to go to school yourself

I can imagine, and I did my own sort of marathon back in march, I set the date for me and hubby to get married in march, right smack dab in the middle of the school year.... So i was planning my wedding plus passing my advanced science classes. :P

Q: How can insecure person maintain a international long distance relationship?

davlastI know there is a similiar question but this one is not answering mine. So sorry for that. I'm 27. And here is few words for introduction... This insecurity isn't in my confidence at all. Quite the contrary I'd never had a problem to get the girl (in perfunctory(?) way). It's really hard for me ...

JAD
@Emilie I think money is the big thing though

@JAD I agree. I guess it depends to what extent though, like kids don't need a tablet or a bunch of toys to have fun (but you do need to be able to afford the basics and maybe daycare which is not cheap typically)
Just being in a good place overall physically-mentally is important I think
the sleep deprivation is reaaaal lol

@Emilie Mhm. Parents need a lot of time for kids

Right, yeah. I am the oldest of 4 kids so I have experience BEING the daycare :P

If you're juggling kids with both parents working full time, you're basically setting them up for failure in comparison to other kids who have more advantages
It's actually pretty scary how dependent later success is on early parental care

JAD
1:18 PM
having to worry about a fulltime job besides study and caring for an infant doesn't sound like the circumstances that make for good mental health

I'm in Canada but I use a forum based in the US and I'm so appaled at the maternity leave there
I could barely put my kid in daycare at 15 months, I was crushed!

If I wanted to write a comment that mentions a book which would make good supplementary material for an answer, is it ok to post a link to said book on amazon or would it be better to link to a synopsis of the book, for example a wikipedia page?

@JAD if you have proper support systems, it is doable.

JAD
@ElizB heh, the idea of a fulltime job next to a study already sounds appaling, let alone an infant along with it

@JAD oh it's not! I've been blessed with really good work conditions and just a lot of support from government here. I've used everything I could feasible
and I don't know how I would be pulling this off right now if I still had courses
at least writing the thesis can be done on your own schedule

1:21 PM
@Emilie canada right?

@Magisch Yup

french or english speaking part?

You can still do stuff with a newborn, they typically sleep a lot but when those toddler years kick in... lol
French (Québec here)

@Rainbacon I could be wrong (correct me anyone if i am wrong) you could write your own answer and provide the synopsis of the book in support to whoever answered. For example, you can answer with "I want to add a point to @thisperson 's answer, with this book, the synopsis is blah blah and the point I would like to emphasise is blah blah."

JAD
^

1:24 PM
@JAD That post you shared reads my mind lol

@Rainbacon As a user, I think a link to a synopsis is better (I don't like the idea of a link to a buying place)

JAD
@Emilie that's why I mentioned it :P

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.

JAD
@Noon don't post just the link
provide the information in the post
wikipedia is subject to change
(although the synopsis is probably relatively stable)

^^

1:27 PM
@JAD True, my point was more about avoiding posting an Amazon link

writing the answer would be great, yes :) from the mod side, I've seen some comments like "You should read this book XYZ" and they got flagged NLN.. so they won't necessarily stick around

Sounds like I have a project for when I have time later :)

JAD
@Noon oh yeah, agree

@EmC i would upvote if they add not just the book synopsis, but also the points in the book that support the answer

amazon links I think are ok because SE sticks in their own affiliate code if you do that :P so I guess it is up to you what you think is a better reference for the material.. Wikipedia is probably more stable to link to though ;)
@ElizB agreed, that would definitely add value :)

1:29 PM

I posted my question on the main site since it seemed ready
do I flag to delete from meta?
or simply delete?
and two things feedback wise my title was waaaay too long so I tweaked it (never realized there was a limit in chars for titles) and as a new user, I was sort of clueless re: tags to apply so maybe it could be nice to suggest tags in the sandbox :)

JAD
@Emilie well, if you can delete it yourself, why flag it for others? :P

My only rationale is to not make it look like I'm defacing :)

nah it's normal in the sandbox :)

then again someone could undelete
so is there anything special about the sandbox other than setting up a question in meta?

oh, we actually typically delete all the content too and link to the main site post (or say "Not Posted: Title"), so it's easier for people who can see deleted posts to scroll thru the sandbox page
@Emilie we also have a feed so new answers get posted in here, for visibility, but otherwise it's just a normal question post

2:01 PM
@EmC The feed can be set up by mods or was that something you had to ask SE?

Fending off an anxiety attack because my dad's texting me and "love-bombing" me
hands shaking a bit and adrendaline is pumping... but the conversation is going civilly. I have been tempted with each message to snap back
my dad's just going on and on apologizing for stuff i'm already over, and saying that we need to talk more about stuff this and that
i just want to get over it and move on
he wants to make sure he's heard...

2:15 PM
block the number

it's my dad. :/
i can't just... block it.
that's quite harsh

you can
just because it's your dad doesn't mean he's entitled to your attention and time

i know i can but it hasn't come to that point yet.
right i know that. I told him i was busy at work
made him happy, shut up, then i ignore now

I'd say if even talking to him gives you a panic attack you'd be well past that point, but that's a decision only you can make

right
it's his treatment of ME that i don't have an issue with, it's his treatment of my mom and my sister that pisses me off.
i'm the golden child here, higher education, doing well, married, etc

2:19 PM
still
him messaging you gives you a panic attack
you have to consider your own mental well being first imo. That others in your family have it worse doesn't make your situation any less serious

right i know that. it's still an ongoing conflict in my head that i'm still debating

@ElizB sending good vibes your way

when he love-bombs like narcissists do when they're insecure and afraid of losing someone, that's what makes me shaky, on the fence about just cutting him off or just finding a better time.

I'm biased because I hate parents like this with a burning passion

@emc Thanks. the conversation's done, so it was short and sweet. he's not bombing my phone which is good.
@Magisch i hate it too. I thought he would leave me alone like my mom does when I got married but because my 16 year old sister already told him she wants to live with mom, and is living with mom and visiting him on weekends (when she's ready) he's having issues all over again
I went through the same exact thing when I was 16. My parents are divorced

2:23 PM
i recently had a meltdown over a single text so.. i get it :( but it's good to take control of when and how you choose to talk to them

just remember it's always your prerogative to not listen. Nobody is entitled to your time and attention
no matter how much they believe they are

Thanks for the support. He thinks that our common ground is "physical activity", which I agree that it is good and healthy but i'm not super passionate about it like he is
I really appreciate your support @EmC and @Magisch :)
I fended that off and i'm okay now. My counselor advised to not let him get in my head and i'm keeping that in my mind. Keep him out of my head

@ElizB good plan :)

@Tinkeringbell Nice!

@EmC :) (phew) Okay, back to work! :)

2:46 PM
looks like feedback might not be working again :/

I think it's sad that my dad is so insecure that he's behaving this way. :/ I'm not pitying him but i'm empathising with him, to understand his perspective.
still, gonna stay strong on my end to make sure my choices are heard and respected and if they're not, he can go do something else on his own
i might meet with him once and during that meeting, have him hear me say that it's not my job to diagnose him so he should go get analyzed himself!
He's trying to stave off the label of "gaslighter" I put on him a while back. oh well. :P He needs to deal with it. Okay, rant over. Work. :P Thanks for listening, people somewhere in the world! :P

@PatrickParker no problem and thanks :) it's been ongoing the past 8 years so it's nothing new. Still seeing a counselor and such it's just annoying.

Consider yourself lucky that you are getting apologies that don't devolve to -but it was really your fault, for making me feel bad, etc.

yeah lol
it's implied though
he tells me to send him dates for doing stuff but he doesn't tell me his
so it's all 100% on me to do the work for the relationship

"it's implied though" sigh those kind of apologies are the worst

yeah seriously. :p i laugh them off

3:09 PM

@EmC Like you are here for me, i'm here for you! Sending good vibes your way!!

@ElizB thanks :) MIL has been hinting around that we need to decide and book tickets for holiday travel soon, so I've been thinking seeing my family, and... bleh

Me and hubby already decided we're having a small thanksgiving just by ourselves. If my mom insists on us seeing her we can have thanksgiving at her house IF she really really insists.
The problem is that my family is very, very loud. Because my grandma had treatment for breast cancer and my grandparents are getting on in age, I will probably go myself for the thanksgiving meal with the excuse I have to get back asap for school.
that seems to be a good excuse because they want me to do well. Christmas is doable at my moms house, she doesnt make a big deal out of it

@ElizB we're definitely going to MIL's for Christmas, so we "should" go to my family for thanksgiving. I did that last year despite misgivings, to see if I could handle seeing my sister, and it was a pretty horrible time :/

3:21 PM
@EmC aww. I won't ask you to go into detail if you don't want to, but that stinks. I guess it's the other way around, thanksgiving is the only time that i'm somewhat obligated to be there. I think i just might leave the hubby at home. (shrugs)
He's an introvert, so I can't imagine he wouldnt be fine with that. I would only stay one or two nights though.
not the whole weekend
that beats the traffic too

well, I feel obligated, I just really don't want to :P

@EmC I get that. My hubby probably feels the same way
I do and don't at the same time. I know my mom and certain family members will get loud and joking and boisterous
being deaf in the mix is not easy for me to keep track of everything

now that I've moved we'll have to get plane tickets and rent a car to go to my parent's place, which complicates things a bit more as well, since we have to decide what we're doing well in advance

@EmC Right, i get that
Don't worry about making a decision right this minute. I know you have to make it soonish but just focus on your priorities, then sleep on what you want to do, write it out, talk, take a walk, something like that.

thanks, that's good advice :)

3:30 PM
I know the pressure of making decisions, that's what my dad was good at but now i've fended off stuff like that
I allow myself time to think it through- like making a yes/no decision, flipping a coin to decide, then see how you feel about it. if you agree, then do it, if you don't agree with the coin flip, do the oppoisite.

@El'endiaStarman Matt is behaving quite recklessly, joking in a no-fun zone!

Q: What should I do in this situation?

JodastOkay, so here's the situation: I'm a 16 and / or male, and there's this girl I like in my physics class (11th grade, not sure if 16 or 17), she's new to the high school, moved from cali to wa over the summer and does not seem to have many friends yet. @TheTinyMan bahaha... my fingers were flying on the keyboard there.
i flagged it, paused, and decided i should give the new guy some help.

@ElizB thanks for doing that :)

i am tired but it takes but a few seconds to type that up :P
@EmC no problem. There seems to be an influx of more questions lately, which is good

i should update my autocomment
Unfortunately, this question appears to be asking “What should I do?”, which the community has [determined](https://interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1310/31) to not be a good fit for Interpersonal Skills Stack Exchange. We can’t decide for you what to do; after you determine what you want to do, we can help you with your goal, but we can’t make these decisions for you. Sorry.

@ElizB well, as long as they can be open ;)

Q: How do I make it clear that a degree alone does not confer expertise?

PyrotechnicalI have an acquaintance whom has a PhD in Child Psychology. So on a regular basis, he is having to deal with mental disorders in children and the broken families they come from. In a recent Facebook post, he said something to the effect that were he a parent, he would never forget about his chil...

oh jk I found it
I'll keep it pinned for a bit then :)

@EmC if I recall correctly, pins wear off after a week, so you should be good just leaving it :) (somebody correct me if I'm wrong)

I believe it might be two weeks, but they do eventually age out, yes
