Noise isn't

@Mithrandir time to nuke all of her comments

What about comments that are both funny AND contain noise?

leave em, IMO

@Edlothiad I'll lock you back up in your girlfriend's apartment! ;)

3:01 PM
@Slytherincess No I just got out!

<shakes keyring> :D

Only 270 more rep! I'm soo close
Time to dig out a close vote review

This is a very thoughtful answer that makes a lot of sense! I like it. :) — Slytherincess Dec 19 '11 at 17:39

That's meaningful, not at all too chatty

You can just nuke them if they suck -- I don't need a blow-by-blow :))

3:04 PM
@Slytherincess Ahah

@Slytherincess you can nuke them - I can only flag, not delete them on my own :)

Do I just click on the date and then delete the comment?

yeah

Ok I'm going to head out and do some work, no question showing up guess I'll be back on 15 minutes

@Edlothiad admit it, you enjoyed it! You had time to look in her private stuff..... :P

3:10 PM
@Edlothiad I'm not exactly sure how to help you. I'm rather dense.

@Mithrandir I disagree on this one.

@Slytherincess too late I'm afraid - it's already been deleted :/
A mod could undelete it if you didn't delete it yourself.

@Mithrandir Nah, it's hardly worth arguing over. No harm, no foul.

I was deleting them, but apparently someone else is too, so I'll leave it to them.

3:13 PM
Probably @Null ;)

Are you guys getting a badge for this?

Not me
I got that a long time ago.

What badge is it?

Two available - Deputy (80 helpful flags) and Marshal (500)
I have both already

LOL, I don't even have Deputy yet and I've been on this site since 2011 :))
What I can do, though, is not make comments like that in the future. because I do tend to be very chatty in general.

3:15 PM
sounds good

@Gallifreyan -- I will be nominating a movie! I'm working on it :D
See? I just made a chatty "noise" comment to @Gallifreyan :))

Nah, I wouldn't flag that :P
This is a really great answer! Thank you -- it puts things into perspective. :) — Slytherincess Apr 19 '12 at 19:07

@Mithrandir I'm reasonably certain the point has been made by now

@DaaaahWhoosh Hm? Yeah, I'm giving the links so that other people can flag

oh, so Slytherincess is just showing up a lot because she's that chatty?

Q: Where do more Ditto come from?

DisturbedNeoPartly inspired by this question. I was originally thinking of asking, "What if a Cubone's parents are a male Marowak and a Ditto", but to be honest I'm not even sure if that's answerable, especially given that in-game a Cubone hatches already wearing said skull and your female Marowak never die...

@Babelfish When a mommy Ditto and a daddy Ditto love each other very much...

@Gallifreyan, Thanks for the heads up on "Imaginaerum" and "Angel's Egg" both sound like they are right inline with my kind of entertainment. I have vague recollections of the sceens for Angel's Egg, but not the plot line. Probably saw the trailer in a different movie and intended to get it and never did.

Hello is it possible to put blockquotes in a spoiler section?

@Tungdil What do you mean?

markdown stuff

@Tungdil I think so. Not sure, hang on, I'll test

my memory is that things start to break down when you try to nest blocks in spoilers

yes this is my problem

3:44 PM
Doesn't look like it, sorry

@Mithrandir ok thanks for validating

@Ixrec I can do it
@Tungdil You can put spoilers in blocks?

@Edlothiad no but i would like to

@Tungdil Pass us a link and I'll try

Everything after: In the course of the movie we learn that

And which bit do you want not in spoilers?
You can't spoiler tag the entire answer?

Everything would be ok

Wait I can't spoiler tag at all?

@Edlothiad That was the problem i ran into

3:55 PM
Hmm let me keep trying

@Mithrandir Should I move those now-deleted comments to trash?

@Gallifreyan I'll do it

But I wanted to practice my RO magic :(...
Ah, you can just use your mod tools :)

People are not happy with my film night announcement ;)
Any ideas on how I can improve it?

maybe everyone's tired of those pesky female protagonists

Hm.

@Gallifreyan Maybe some people do not like the theme?

So people are not tired of male protagonists?

honestly, I don't usually make this joke, but in this case I'd like to see an attack helicopter protagonist

4:07 PM
Any dark fantasy film is welcome. Honestly, no one nominated Hellboy yet.

I'd nominate it, but I've seen it at least four times now, so I don't want it to win

4:19 PM
I really want Generalist
Generalist should be a Gold Badge

4:30 PM
@Gallifreyan A stretch but I am not sure it is anything to do with "Dark Fantasy". Rather it is about others wanting a different theme.

yeah, how did we come by the dark fantasy theme? I'm not opposed to it, but I didn't see anything about the methodology used to determine it

@DaaaahWhoosh I picked it just like that.

@DaaaahWhoosh My observation is passive vs active. A few (single digit?) are tasked to drive the buss. I suspect they will take any recommendations though.

@Gallifreyan aha! Tyrant! The downvoters are onto your lust for power!

Did the Nausicaa event happen?

yeah, it was a good movie

Good. I love that movie.

I've been considering changing my avatar to Teto

@Axelord The last I looked there was an entry in Meta

@EnigmaMaitreya I see that, and I see Mos thanks to that.
Still not happy with it, but hey: at this rate, we'll have an offsite chat in no time.

@Gallifreyan Examples.

@Axelord That's why I nominated 5 films

@Gallifreyan I mean in the question.
Bonus if you irritate people in doing so, like saying "Star Wars" as an example for a Fantasy night.

That would be me steering the nominations.

4:58 PM
@Gallifreyan It would. But it would also be less downvotes because your description is broad.

5:45 PM
@Edlothiad I actually do. To start with, I think it is probably correct (though I am not sure). The problem is that all the other answers seem to make the assumption (in my opinion quite incorrect) that the temptation of the Ring is nothing more than mundane desire for power.
Except for the lowest-voted one, which isn't as good as the one I accepted.

it does seem like an interesting question, considering how the Ring has power over other Maiar, and how Morgoth wasn't as strong as some Maiar

@DaaaahWhoosh Morgoth was the most powerful.

@Bellerophon he used to be, but by the time of the Sun he wasn't strong enough to oppose its rising
so in the specific case of Morgoth (after thousands of years of orc-breeding) vs whoever it was that drove the Sun, Morgoth would've lost
I've been meaning to ask about that, but I'm wondering if Morgoth dies eventually and I don't want that spoiled

@DaaaahWhoosh Is that in the Silmarilion? I should reread that.

Morgoth would not have been influenced by the Ring, in my opinion, because the (a) the Ring was simply a lesser manifestation of his evil and (b) he was already a Dark Lord with ambitions to destroy everything.

5:57 PM
@Bellerophon yeah, I'm reading it now so I don't expect most people to remember the things I now know

So did someone raise a bunch of flags today?
A lot of comments disappeared.

@Adamant I agree Morgoth wouldn't much care about the Ring, but that still raises the question of the relative power of the other Valar
like, would Aule's dwarves or Yavanna's trees leech enough power from them to make them sub-Maiar?

@DaaaahWhoosh I think I asked that question? ;)

@Adamant lol yes you did, but now I'm trying to answer it

@DaaaahWhoosh The trees were partly done by Manwe right? So would he take the power loss?

6:02 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh But the answer to that is basically no. Recall that as long as the Ring existed, its power was "in rapport" with Sauron and he was not lessened.
I imagine the same would apply to the other Ainur.

@Adamant Yep, Mith did a flagfest :D

@Adamant Why were they worried about him regaining it then?

@Adamant but wasn't he lessened by the fact that he didn't have the Ring?

@Bellerophon Because when he had it, his power was actually increased.
@DaaaahWhoosh Not relative to his pre-Ring state.
Tolkien is pretty clear about this.
With the Ring, his powers of domination are increased over his basic Maia state, but without it he does not lose access to that power for "general-purpose" uses.

maybe I can ask this on main, and you can answer with quotes?

6:04 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh I believe this question has already been asked, or close enough.

ugh, maybe I'll go looking for it eventually then
but still, Sauron and his ring is different than Morgoth and his orcs
and Morgoth was weakened by creating the orcs

Let's hold some horses. These are some bold unsourced claims gentleman!

@DaaaahWhoosh Maybe because he had to overcome elves natural goodness.

@DaaaahWhoosh As I understand it, Morgoth's "will was weakened by long domination of inferiors." Not the creation of the orcs, per se, but their control.

6:06 PM
Given the experts here on this subject, 1.was the ring destroyed for real? 2. If so what happened to the power in it?

@EnigmaMaitreya (a) Yes. (b) It basically was lost, or at least dissipated.

@Adamant oh, that'd make sense. I guess we're at an impasse until I can go home and find that quote

@EnigmaMaitreya Yes, lost.

> Judge Dredd: Chronicles of a crime-wave society, that never happened. - Syndicate Wars.

So, here's the thing. Morgoth and Sauron both had their Rings, which were equally vulnerable to destruction.
Sauron's Ring was made of gold, and could be destroyed by fire (if hot enough)
Morgoth's Ring was all of Middle-Earth.

6:09 PM
Follow up, then if what I read @Adamant saying is, that the power to create the ring did not come from Sauron, in such a way as to permanently reduce his power.

1. How would Sauron have opposed it's rising, when it was a flying ship taking off from Valinor?
2. How did Sauron's power *increase* when he made the ring? Where would this power have come from?

user132126
@SFFBlog In contrast, Dredd is an awesome movie.

yes it is

@EnigmaMaitreya Right. It's like sticking your hand in a gauntlet. As long as your hand is in the gauntlet, you can punch with more damage.
If the gauntlet (with your hand still in it) is destroyed, then you lose your hand.

Q: How much power can Sauron recover without the Ring?

thegreatjediDue to the essence he put into the Ring, Sauron's existence was forever bound to the Ring, but that doesn't mean that Sauron is powerless without it. When Sauron lost the Ring and the power within it, he was able to gradually regenerate that lost power, which was invested in the Ring, on his own...

6:11 PM
If you don't have access to the gauntlet, then you can still punch normally.

@Adamant I think that part is clear, but what I am asking is the power in the gauntlet came from something or some one.

user132126
I have access to the new Gauntlet on Steam but the audio drivers are borked so all I hear is static while playing make it very unplayable.

So what is the nature of that Power?

@EnigmaMaitreya I'd say it's sort of the form that the power came in.

user132126
Aside from the fact that's it's disappointingly boring, anyway...

6:12 PM
Making the Ring put Sauron's native strength in a form better suited to the domination of others, thus increasing his power.

I still don't understand how Sauron's power increased when he made the ring?
@Adamant No it would've made his power more efficient

user132126
Like any tool.

@Edlothiad Why not? It just did. Them's the rules.

@Adamant Them's most definitely not the rules

In Tolkien, you can make magical objects that contain your own power, but enhance it when used. The Ring was clearly one of them; Tolkien says it either in his letters or History of Middle-Earth.

6:14 PM
Sauron put "a great part of his former power into the ring"

user132126
Making a hammer increases my ability to slam nails into wood. Without the hammer, my forehead gets really sore.

So what was the power he put into the ring?

user132126
Which is probably how Mjolnir came about, come to think of it.

@Edlothiad Why does no one remember the part about him not be "diminished" when not wearing the Ring? :)

@Adamant Where's the quote to this?

6:14 PM
@CreationEdge That's where your going wrong. Don't create a hammer, create a ring that makes someone else hammer nails with their forehead.

@Adamant the amazing vagueness of that line is why I'm not even trying to pretend I have a clue how this ring power level stuff works =)

He is diminished

"He had been obliged to let a great part of his own inherent power (a frequent and very significant motive in myth and fairy-story) pass into the One Ring. While he wore it, his power on earth was actually enhanced. But even if he did not wear it, that power existed and was in ‘rapport’ with himself: he was not ‘diminished’. "

user132126
@Bellerophon I already wear three rings! I need to have more?

@Bellerophon Yup that is right. OR dominate others empowering them to create temporary hammers to do the pounding

6:15 PM
"Unless some other seized it and became possessed of it. If that happened, the new possessor could (if sufficiently strong and heroic by nature) challenge Sauron, become master of all that he had learned or done since the making of the One Ring, and so overthrow him and usurp his place."""
As I said. Them's the rules.

Where are you quoting these things from?

user132126
His keyboard.

@Edlothiad The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Basically, him responding to reader's questions.

the way I see it, the elves don't see a difference between magic and craftsmanship. Just like Tolkien doesn't see a difference between fiction and the Bible. It's all part of the music of creation, the song of Eru. We like to think of energy as being conserved, but in Tolkien's eyes things can be spontaneously created by thought

@EnigmaMaitreya Inefficient. That has three steps. 1) Make ring, 2) Dominate guy into making a hammer, 3) Dominate him into pounding stuff. My way only had two.

user132126
6:17 PM
The quote key is shift + '

user132126
>_>

@Adamant I'm aware what the letters are ^.^

@Bellerophon Hum, wait that is what the Monkey King/Stone Monkey (Journey to the West) could do, pluck a hair and each segment becomes a duplicate of himself with his might staff .... infinitely.

the very idea of fiction shows that you can create an entire universe with your thoughts. The rings are extensions of that, using one's own mind and mastery of a craft to create something that did not previously exist.

user132126
Who was it that's currently reading through Wheel of Time?

6:19 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya Still wasn't enough for him to challenge Heaven, though.
They sure showed him.

@CreationEdge I am but I don't think I have told you so you must mean someone else.

@Adamant Oh he challenged Heaven but Buddah out smarted him

@CreationEdge I think Rand never finished it.

user132126
@Bellerophon No, it's you. You were my guess, but wasn't 100%. I remember you talking about it with Rand.

@Adamant Come on Buddha had the ability to stretch his hand to infinite lengths. That is a great parlor trick as in that wins a lot of games.

user132126
6:21 PM
How far along are you now?

@CreationEdge About 1/4 of the way through the Great Hunt.

user132126
Oh, the scene I'm thinking of is from Towers of Midnight, so it's a ways off.

@Edlothiad - How do we know that this is a homework question?

I never said it was a homework question, just said we would help with homework questions if one arises. Because to me it sounds like a homework question.
Also the initial revision had "Urgent, I need an answer immediately"

@Edlothiad Ah, well. Sometimes people get prickly when people intimate that their questions are homework.
Even when it's true. ;-=

6:25 PM
@Edlothiad ooh, maybe it's a final exam question

@Adamant How do you mean, I tried to help by providing a useful comment. I told her she's got two questions there and if she could clarify more about what she was asking, and that it would help if she put in a little effort so we had more info.

@Edlothiad I agree that your comment was useful. I just think it's probably best not to suggest that someone is asking a homework question unless they make it clear (e.g. "this is for homework.")

@Adamant I understand, but I highly doubt this is why she hasn't come back and provided more information.

@Edlothiad Hmm, yes.

You disagree?

6:28 PM
@Edlothiad Not really.

Ok :)

OK, this is interesting:

A: Is it a coincidence that there are exactly 42 letters in Arthur Dent's question?

user001After a load of research I can only come to the conclusion that the answer to your own question is 42 (Any other answer would be pure speculation)

It's clearly a joke non-answer, but it got 8 upvotes.

@Gallifreyan, how is that an answer?

It's not. On occasion, people will find something funny enough that they upvote it even though it doesn't really answer the question.

@Edlothiad * A joke answer.

6:35 PM
That's always tricky to deal with.
Once a +70 joke answer did get deleted, though.

42 is not an answer to "Is it a coincidence?"
I've flagged it as NAA, because 42 does not say whether or not it is a coincidence.

user132126
Right, it's an answer to Arthur Dent's question, not spacecraft7's

the answer does say that 'any other answer would be pure speculation', which is a somewhat valid answer, depending on how much research the answerer actually did

user132126
I don't buy that reasoning.

user132126
You could start answering any question with gibberish and add on "Anything else is speculation"

6:45 PM
I think you need to find Marvin, didn't he know the answer?

@CreationEdge right, but in this case, the only non-speculation answer would be a quote from Adams, which no one has been able to produce.

Speaking of which I am still trying to find him, this is a really big restaurant with all kinds of oddities.

user132126
Okay, I just saw that pacman emoji art on the starboard and A+ use of emojis.

@EnigmaMaitreya No. He did not.

user132126
@DaaaahWhoosh Still, you could apply that to any question asking for author's opinions. "Anything else is pure speculation."

6:47 PM
@Bellerophon I would have sworn, he said "I know the answer, but does anyone think to ask me? No I am just a robot with a brain the size of a planet"

@CreationEdge so I guess the right thing to do is to leave the question unanswered?

user132126
They did not answer in the form of "Based on my research, Douglas Adams never addressed this particular line, but evidence suggests the answer is 42"

user132126
Basically, they need to be explicit if they're trying to say there's no Word of God available on this.

@Bellerophon I seem to recall it was some where around the time when the Mice were talking to the group.

@CreationEdge in that case, yes, I think I agree.

user132126
6:49 PM
And, so long as they're not offering any evidence of their "research" they shouldn't be getting upvotes! +8 is ridiculous for an unsourced answer like that. It's low quality at best.

yeah, at best it's an attempt to comment, at worst it's a shameless ploy to farm upvotes from inexperienced users
a 42 joke answer on a 42 question misses the entire point of the 42 joke

user132126
We're fine with humor and stuff and our answers, but we still like there to be some meat on the bones, as well.

user132126
I left a comment for guidance, hopefully that's all that's needed.

traditionally, the "pure fluff" humor seems to fit better in comments anyway

Meh. Can't make the system display the answer properly.

as far as I'm concerned, any magical character in D&D should get a +5 to being violently murdered
but maybe I've just had a bad experience

In Star Wars Legends lore, Gray Jedi are Force users who walk between the light and the dark sides without following the will of the Jedi Council. The only will they follow is the will of the Force. With Luke Skywalker’s declaration that it’s time for the Jedi to end, we believe this means that Rey represents the beginnings of a new kind of Force user. "
