@Ixrec So, assume he can see the future of his choices but ....

@DaaaahWhoosh dunno. I just didn't enjoy it.

@Mithrandir the correct answer is "if all the Stormtroopers were geese"

to be fair, Star Wars is not the best movie of all time or anything

it does seem to be one of those 'you had to be there' kinds of movies

@Ixrec It's a fantasy archetype made flesh. Maybe not the best, but definitely one of the most important to watch as a person of modern times.

8:05 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya miao! she's a feisty one!

definitely

@EnigmaMaitreya but..?

@EnigmaMaitreya See in what way? Does he experience it all, or just see bits and pieces from a third person (perspective)?

Q: Why was the EMH Mark I used to scrub plasma conduits?

ChristianApparently it's pretty easy to create a holomatrix, even more so with only basic algorithms, such as scrubbing plasma conduits. Why did Star Trek go to the trouble of changing the EMH Mark I, instead of just creating new ones from scratch? Especially at the risk of offending one of the best (whil...

@Edlothiad Here is a good trailer for it youtube.com/watch?v=mpi0qsp3v_w I will give a small spoiler, you see him run to the train and catch it with his mom, you see him run and turn around and stay with his dad. The movie is told from the perspective of the Old Man (himself) looking at the consequences of the choices. Neither choices has been made both were made.
@Edlothiad Feisty one ... that is an understatement :) and I would not change a single thing about her. It will be 41 years this year.

8:12 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya Man you're old...

@EnigmaMaitreya Well, damn. That looks like a fantastic movie.

Jokes, Congrats on last years 40!
And good luck for the next many years!

Thanks

Put it up for the movie night haha

it does sound like a perfect nomination for a different theme

8:15 PM
That's a great film...

@Ixrec You all need to be careful, the choice itself should let you know it is heart rending at moments.

@EnigmaMaitreya Good!

Q: From where should I start reading Hellblazer?

Human_AfterAllThe title sums it up. Given that John Constantine was introduced on The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 (June 1985), had its launch title (John Constantine, Hellblazer) in 1988, ended in 2013 @ its' 300th issue and was relaunched that same year as DC Universe's Constantine, I'd like to know where to...

@EnigmaMaitreya Heart rending is a positive.

8:23 PM
did you mean heart wrenching?

Especially if done via a hand in some sort of anachronistic South American temple.

that freaked me out as a kid

@Edlothiad Indeed he does.

@Ixrec Indiana Jones movies are weird. They're deeply disturbing if taken seriously.

I dunno why the ending of the first one didn't freak me out
maybe because I did what Indy said and had my eyes closed for most of it

8:27 PM
@Axelord Unfortunately the initial choice is probably what set the wrong note for my wife as she had a .... reaction to it. The choice the parents asked him to make on the train platform.

@Ixrec The ending of the last one kills me.
Like, "is no one going to discuss this?!"

lol

@EnigmaMaitreya A reaction? A tearful one?
"THIS IS KINDA IMPORTANT, GUYS!"

@Axelord More like anger why any parent would make a child choose.

@EnigmaMaitreya Well that makes sense.
Still happens, though, so best to just push forward!

8:33 PM
@Axelord Yeah but I probably should have seen right then and there that she had become emotionally invested in the Mom, Dad and child.

The end of the first Mummy with the spider Rock is disturbing

not to interrupt, but should this story identification question be tagged with the story it's known not to be?
oh, wait. It is from that

AxelF is a recurring user right
?

@DaaaahWhoosh Ok, I was wondering what you were asking :)

@EnigmaMaitreya Even better!

8:38 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya yeah, when I read the question it sounded like the OP didn't want HHGttG answers. But then I realized he just didn't want the first answer

Q: Sci-fi movie about good and evil android on space ship

AxelFI'm searching for a Sci-Fi movie I saw in my childhood (late 80s - early 90s). The movie was about an crew on a spaceship with two similar looking androids or robots; one evil trying to kill the crew and one good fighting to save the crew. Any suggestions?

9:03 PM
I want to be concerned about the recent creation of the tag, and how it's being added to questions that already have the tag

@DaaaahWhoosh It should be killed
how can you be an expert in
Take it up on Meta, I'll back you
@Mooz, is it or real ?

@Edlothiad Let’s stick with .

has this been discussed, I don't see the point of artificial gravity?
can you be an expert in it?

I think was the original, and it encompasses some edge cases

@Edlothiad That’s not really all there is to tags. Might someone want to subscribe to them? Do they help with searching? Can they be used to create room feeds?

9:11 PM
I think it definitely covers all variation of

I think might meet those requirements.

I think it's a bit of a stretch with those requirements though

@Edlothiad The same way you can be an expert in gravity.

That's true, I just feel like gravity covers artificial-gravity
what does the new tag have that the old tag doesn't?

I posted the meta question
is there a meta-bot in here?

Q: Do we need an 'artificial gravity' tag?

DaaaahWhooshI just noticed a few recent edits adding the artificial-gravity tag to questions about artificial gravity. A few of these questions already featured the gravity tag. I don't really see why we'd need both tags; gravity should cover both. Maybe setting up a synonym could be useful, but I think ha...

@Marvin Speak of the devil ;P

The guy who knows about the gravity imposed by a black hole on an orbiting planet doesn't necessarily know anything about the gravity imposed by unobtainium on people on a diner/time-and-relative-dimension-in-space-craft.

@Axelord Does anyone? ;)

nope

@Adamant Depending on the setting, sure.

9:20 PM
@Axelord but questions about real-world science are off-topic, so that guy should go over to Physics

Handwaves are still viable trivia.

"gravity" would be more useful as a tag for that movie than a tag for the force of nature

@Ixrec Agreed.

@Ixrec Come to think of it, what is the tag for that film?

if we have one, I assume it has the year appended

or that

No need for years since there is only one I suppose.

lol we have a tag

This is going to get funny when another "Gravity" movie is released.
Or when Gravity gets a sequel.

@Ixrec We have a tag

9:21 PM
“A deep sense of emotional attachment to another person.”

plenty of stuff to burninate

<< que?

@Edlothiad looks like the wiki for that one is wrong/misleading, or else it's used wrong

“Offspring that have not yet fully matured or reached the designated stage of adulthood.”

9:25 PM
Burn baby burn!

Mainly used on questions, it seems.

@Edlothiad Artificial gravity just seemed to me that it can be unique enough, with out talking about "real" gravity. They can be used in conjunction or separately and still make sense. Artificial gravity is different to gravity.

some of the questions are about child-fiction, others are about fiction with children in it

It's a variation, not different I would say
child-fiction is correct use, as it's about children.

@Edlothiad If that’s what the tag is used for, we don’t really need it, do we?
Do we also have ?

9:27 PM
Just burn them all!

Nah we don't really, but it's correct use would be for child-fiction

user132126
Or childrens-lit

@Edlothiad For which I believe we have

user132126
Ah there we go

9:34 PM
@Edlothiad But I think it is GREAT
For the Anti-Gravity conversation, I did add this to the meta question so .... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_gravity

@Gallifreyan Meta question: Is [love] necessary?

Hum, forgot about this or I never knew it "It should be pointed out that the Gemini 8 mission achieved artificial gravity for a few minutes. This, however, was due to an accident. The acceleration forces upon the crew were so high (~ 4g's) that the mission had to be urgently terminated."

Like the question about [villains] getting its just deserts.

@Adamant I'm not well-equipped to answer - maybe @Edlothiad could :D

"ISS Centrifuge Demo: a 2011 NASA proposal for a demonstration project preparatory to the final design of the larger torus centrifuge space habitat for the Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle. The structure would have an outside diameter of 30 feet (9.1 m) with a ring interior cross-section diameter of 30 inches (760 mm). It would provide 0.08 to 0.51g partial gravity. This test and evaluation centrifuge would have the capability to become a Sleep Module for ISS crew.[23]"

9:43 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya I hope they like waking up to vomit

@Gallifreyan Is this some sort of meme?

@DaaaahWhoosh ? What study suggest they would? Not being argumentative or confrontational just looking for information. When I first saw it I thought you were referencing the Vomit Comet. Then I realized you were not.

@Edlothiad Do I need to post the over your head pic?

No?
Oh the girlfriend thing?

@EnigmaMaitreya somewhere on Worldbuilding I think I read how in small rings, you end up feeling the weirdness of gravity more, since the changes are large enough to detect

9:47 PM
Love is necessary. It just needs edited.

@DaaaahWhoosh Ok, I know what your referring to and that may be why the proposal died.

Q: How does Ego know what a celestial is?

MartianInvaderEgo says he is a celestial, and tells his story as finding himself alone in the universe, and searching for other life. When he finds that life, he calls it "disappointing", which would seem to indicate it was not life of his species. But then how does he know what Celestials are? How does he ...

@Axelord A bit extreme don't you think? :)

@Babelfish Bad question, more

Q: Do we need [children]?

AdamantWe have a children tag that is currently on 48 questions. To wit: Offspring that have not yet fully matured or reached the designated stage of adulthood. Of these, fully 43 are story-identification, a use that seems to made unnecessary by the more widely used childrens-novel. The other f...

9:49 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya Not for an assassin droid.

@Babelfish I would think one answer would be he took it from some species he encountered that tried to describe him.

Oh god, what have I just said...
Burn baby burn! — Edlothiad 16 secs ago

@Null Ha ha ok I concede

@EnigmaMaitreya It's metaphorical!

Thanks for all the flag moderation @Null, be back tomorrow!

9:51 PM
@Axelord :) yes sorry was just practicing my humor on you. :) As in it might be something Arthur Dent would say.

@EnigmaMaitreya I now freely admit that it wasn't metaphorical.

@Axelord No no no, I am not going down that rabbit hole with you :)

@Axelord YAAAAAAAAR!
at least I assume I get the reference

@EnigmaMaitreya I could never fit in a rabbit hole. I am too large.

@Axelord Ha ha you got me and I just saw that

9:56 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh What I want to know is why all these people getting tased when I look up "taser face" are naked.

@Babelfish Future works

@Axelord That flew right over my head but I laughed anyway because everyone else was.

@Axelord So when you doo doo yourself you don't mess your clothes up

@EnigmaMaitreya It is unfortunate that your reflexes are not fast enough for you to prevent things from going over your head.
@Edlothiad That is actually a pretty good reason, but for now my headcanon is that the photographer was having a field day.

@Axelord Crap didn't I just hear that in some movie?

10:00 PM

@Axelord Yeah but when did he say that

@EnigmaMaitreya The first movie.

@Axelord It's beautiful

@Axelord I am associating it with something more recent. But time is a funny thing.

@Edlothiad

10:03 PM
@JackBNimble Should have been a highly upvoted comment instead of a highly downvoted answer.

It had a positive score.

@EnigmaMaitreya I rewatched the original before seeing the sequel.
@JackBNimble <has some downvoting to do>
Ah, I can't see it.

@Axelord Oh, I take your word for it, no contest. Things can get scrambled :(

Doesn't matter, the question itself was deleted.

@EnigmaMaitreya I just assumed everyone did. It's such a great movie.

10:06 PM
@Axelord I probably should have but didn't so did they get past the "thing they don't talk about" in the end? I got the impression they did.

@EnigmaMaitreya Future works.
I also got that impression.

Was it here I saw a question about Stan Lee's double appearance?

Most likely. There's at least a dozen questions about his appearances.

probably, there's no way we and M&TV don't have questions about that
no he's not a Watcher

At the very least, he's the most interesting man in the universe. He might be a Watcher, though.

10:09 PM
@Ixrec Well I am lost as I do not understand what the questions would be

@Ixrec I'd rather he be The Most Interesting Man in At Least Two Galaxies, than a Watcher, but... Marvel.
@EnigmaMaitreya "How the.... what?!"

I would say a Story Teller and I might thing about the hot topic earlier and the Songs and how they influenced Middle Earth

@EnigmaMaitreya well, there's what his relationship to the Watchers is, there's how many of his cameos are canonically part of him doing Watcher stuff, there's why he referenced his FedEx cameo which takes place after GotG2 chronologically, etc etc
(not saying these are good questions, aside from the timeline glitch they're probably all future works)

@Ixrec Incidentally, it makes very little sense for them to put these two movies in the same year.
They just become friends in the first, then in the second they're a tightly knit family that would do anything for each other.

Also, I have pondered the dialogue about "Brandy", while I think it is a great song ....

10:12 PM
Putting them both in the same year is just... odd.
@EnigmaMaitreya We might need a different room to discuss this unless everyone can agree to not be offended by spoilers.
Non sequitur credit scenes be damned.

Yeah no problem I have tried to be very circumspect about all this

checks release dates

It's been 10 days in the US, 17 outside.

GotG2 has come out in every single region in the world that imdb has info for, and it's been out for a while in all the English-speaking regions
so we're probably good to allow basic spoilers unless someone actively objects

Ok. @EnigmaMaitreya What about Brandy?

10:16 PM
The Dialogue about its meaning in the movie, yes to what they were saying, but I failed to see how it moved things down the line movie wise

It didn't. The whole movie was a character exhibit.

And I problably wouldn't take it as far as they did

I have a question. If my neighbours make a lot of noise late at night from some machine that rattles my ceiling, am I allowed to complain and tell them to stop using it?

So I guess it was just a metaphor for Ego.

On saturday it was on till 3am keeping me up till then

10:19 PM
@Edlothiad Is it seperate family units (house), Duplex or apartment?

@EnigmaMaitreya Well, he also really enjoyed the song. Parallelism.
@Edlothiad Have you asked them about it? Kind requests make better neighbors.

@Edlothiad Ultimately it is going to get down to your local rules/laws vs Making a Disturbance. IF there is a 3rd party owner you may want to talk to them

@Axelord Would Agents of Nothing work?

 Agents of Absence

nobody lives here anymore.

@Adamant No. And it never will.

@EnigmaMaitreya They're the flat above
@Axelord Is 11pm too late?

10:27 PM
@Axelord It does seem like it might be worth looking at. "Spoilers for comic movies" basically seems to fit the bill.

I think we can reasonably ignore the backstory and just start using it as a spoiler chatroom again

@Edlothiad Yes, then there should not be a problem. Be aware the reaction you get may not be what you want/expect and I would probably know what the options are and be prepared to base your case on attempting to be reasonable being met with unreasonable. BUT again, things just may not go as you want and that might make things worse for you.

@EnigmaMaitreya All I want is for them not to have the machine on after 11 as it rattles my ceiling and is an unbearable noise

@Edlothiad Any time is too late if it keeps you awake and can be avoided.
@Ixrec Heh
"20th Century Fox owned the cinematic rights to Ego the Living Planet, and Marvel Studios, in order to use him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, traded his right in order to change the powers of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who was later used in Deadpool"
This is awesome trivia.

I just heard that earlier today
are you watching the New Rockstars video too?

10:41 PM
"Matthew McConaughey was offered to portray the character before Kurt Russell, but he turned it down for The Dark Tower movie"
No, reading the (actually pretty well maintained) MCU wiki.
Kurt Russell was by far the better choice.
Has anything been said regarding what Thanos is, in the MCU? @Ixrec

@Axelord nothing that I'm aware of beyond being an alien and being powerful enough to order around other aliens and their armies
I assume his backstory will be broadly similar to the comics one just because of how he treated Gamora and Nebula, but presumably streamlined a lot

@Gallifreyan "bite the dust" hahaha, good one!

@Ixrec Apparently the GotG art book included things from the comics, like him killing half the universe with the gauntlet, though it isn't apparent if that's made obvious.

would be funny if they managed to adapt some portion of the story where Deadpool gets the Infinity Gauntlet

10:57 PM
@Axe am I supposed to remember everything from GotG1?

lol no

@Edlothiad ...yes. Always. Forever.

Maybe after joining the site
ok I'm late for bed, gnight!

@Ixrec Well that's probably impossible for now, with the rights snafu.

I would've agreed with you a few years ago but the agreements they've come to recently are quite impressive

10:58 PM
36 first posts today, busy day at the office

Disney-Marvel should just buy back the Marvel properties already. Fox has successfully turned the X-Men franchise into a profit killer.

"Can I make this person do anything" "only if you give me this character" "OK!"

my understanding was that the current holders wouldn't want to sell them back at any reasonable price
we are talking about companies that will make a movie for the sole purpose of not letting Marvel get those rights back

@Ixrec That's important when those properties are your best sellers.
Even if you do drive them into the ground so horribly that time travel is needed to make them fresh.

I was mostly referring to F4, which I don't recall being a huge seller for Fox

11:04 PM
I'm not sure how the rights are packaged.

my parents actually asked me the other day what was going on with Spiderman since they were highly confused by the ads with him and Tony Stark together, explaining all of that was fun

@Ixrec It's sad that he's getting introduced so late in the game.
Like Adam Warlock.
Isn't the next Avenger's movie... next year?
Kick that can down the road and redo Civil War.

11:25 PM
That wizard of oz answer is going GOOOOOOOOOLD!!!

11:39 PM
@Edlothiad Could be, could be.
I noticed that the MCU wiki seems to know that a character is mentioned in an episode before that episode has aired. Is it from a trailer, perhaps?
Do some people get to see it ahead of time?

Q: Was it a coincidence that Shockley delivered the Terrigen?

AdamantIn Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the anti-Inhuman Watchdog Shockley goes to expose Senator Nadeer to Terrigen dust, in the hopes of turning her into an Inhuman. It seems he was sent by the Superior to “dangle” Nadeer in front of S.H.I.E.L.D. if she turned out to be an Inhuman. Not only did Nadeer not...

@Edlothiad I wish I could identify peoples' origins. I want to know where the basic ideas of Oz aren't commonly known by all.
@Adamant That would make the most sense, but it could also be from interviews with the people involved in the making, etc.

@Axelord ye, who hasn't seen the Simpson adaptation of every major work yet?
also the noise is back, rip sleep tonight :/
anyways, night night

@Edlothiad Try a knock on the door. Sleep well.

I’m going to ask about that person’s fate (Vijay Nadeer) if they don’t show up in the finale tomorrow.

Q: What is the name of this sci-fi strategy video game?

Spar10 LeonidasA few years ago, I watched a trailer on IGN for an upcoming (back then) sci-fi video game. I distinctly remember the trailer's story: there was a military testing a new FTL drive on one of their spacecraft. Unfortunately, the test failed, and the ship was on a collision course for Earth, specif...
