Thanks for coming, everyone.

I don't know 'bout the rest of you, but that was basically a life-changing experience

thanks again for hosting, that was a good movie

Indeed, enjoyed it.

I need to figure out how many of Ghibli's other movies qualify as sci-fi

the ending was a little quick, i had the same thoughts with the last ghibli movie i saw

12:09 AM
actually, wait, we do fantasy too
so that's most of them
Mononoke is my personal favorite but yeah Nausicaa was great too

heh yep

and now to go watch the latest Doctor Who episode which I totally forgot about because of all this movie night stuff

Farewell everyone. Time to hit the bed for me.

thankfully this is Saturday so I can stay up watching stuff for ages with no consequences

@JoseAntonioDuraOlmos goodnight

12:13 AM
night

@Ixrec I think they all would qualify as SCIFI/Fanatasy

yeah I forgot the fantasy half for a minute
so rand will have to kill me if he ever shows up again

AdamantWe know that the One Ring would have corrupted any mortal (humans, dwarves, hobbits, etc) or Elf who claimed it. @ArtOfCode Yes, but will there be any experts?

that... doesn't matter

@ArtOfCode It's too broad - the problem with most of those is that they're meta tags, and are best used for questions about those concepts, not for questions mentioning these concepts.

Q: Is there an existing story world where swords power star-ships?

PCSgtLI'm working to create a fantasy/sci-phy world for my own nefarious purposes where swords can power star ships. However I have this vague recollection of having encountered a system like that previously in a book or game. Does anyone have any thoughts or clues as to something like this?

The @Babelfish babbles on..

Need some ideas for the next film night.
I'd like it to be fantasy-themed, but I need some insight on narrowing the scope.

SQB
12:39 PM
Isn't that narrow enough?
Or are you looking for a theme?

we normally aim for somehing narrower than 50% of site scope

SQB
Hmm. How about something midsummer related?

We need something narrow enough so people can pick just one when voting, and something broad enough so there's an adequate number of nominations.
Since it looks like fantasy is under-represented in cinematography.

*nominations

@Ixrec It's a subtle nudge in the direction I secretly want this film night to go to :)

ah, the rare conscious Freudian slip

@Gallifreyan "Porco Rosso": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porco_Rosso Just askin is that fantasy enough?

SQB
@Babelfish sounds a bit like End of Eternity by Asimov, depending on how much may be ascribed to misremembering.

@SQB Shrug Good as any, went and read it and honestly not a single, mental link, came up for me. There were some until the Alien Blocking everything came in.

@EnigmaMaitreya I don't think anthropomorphic animals make it fantasy :) As much as I'd like to watch a Ghibli film, we've just seen one yesterday, so this time we should go for something different.

@Gallifreyan Fantasy Live Action, Anime, both?

@EnigmaMaitreya I'm not looking for nominations right now, I'm more interested in a theme.

1:44 PM
there is a rather famously over-discussed consensus on this site that anthropomorphic animals by themselves do not make a work fantasy

@Gallifreyan I know, I am starting the process of pulling up memories of movies I have seen.

@Ixrec I'm still not over the fact that Ratatouille is on-topic here.

lol

But I won't argue because it's ridiculous enough already.

I'm having trouble thinking of any themes that don't have more sci-fi options than fantasy options

1:46 PM
@Ixrec @Gallifreyan Oh I agree but the setting the movie depicts ... for me is most certainly fantasy and I think the movie is considered to be a cult classic, that does not mean every one will like it

yeah it might be, unfortunately I haven't seen Porco myself

@Ixrec I think you would most likely like it.

probably

NOT as a nomination but as type of fantasy, "Labyrinth": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinth_(film) I didn't want touse Willow :)

@EnigmaMaitreya That's what I had in mind.
"Dark Fantasy" - how is that?

1:49 PM
Yes good enough for me
I can narrow down the selection

@Gallifreyan Ha ha Ok, I get the picture :)

I'm game for anything with Tennant in it

^ Notice the similarity?
Or is it just me?

@Ixrec Did you watch the Jessica Jones Series?

1:52 PM
yup
that's why I have an opinion on him and not just his Doctor

@Gallifreyan Different arm ....

I also saw some of Broadchurch

He was an effective Villain in that series

which retroactively made his Doctor extra scary

I assume Time Bandits would not be Dark Enough

@Gallifreyan My wife is a HUGE fan of his, me I am kind of meh leaning to the plus side.

I'm too confused to pick a favourite Doctor. It's usually the one I'm watching at that moment, so it oscillates between the last 4 Doctors :D

@Gallifreyan For me, there is only 1 Doctor and it is probably prejudiced by the fact that My wife, our children and I all watched him Tom Baker

yep, my experience talking to DW fans on the internet is that there's a strong correlation between favorite Doctor and the first Doctor you saw

Need someone to review my close votes (1, 2, 3) :D

2:09 PM
BUT the real question is who is your favorite fellow traveler? For the longest time, it was Nissa or ... Romana. Now Nissa has been replaced by Amy Pond but Romana is still there.

Ew, Amy Pond.

1 Seems to be answered and was not one I would put at the top of my list .....
2 is the same thing
3 the same and the common thread is duplicate so your going to leave 1 open?

I've never been able to decide on a favorite companion

IF your going to leave 1 open, then not 1. I can not say 2 is better than 3 or 3 is better than 2. Would be nice to combine them
@Ixrec Well Sarah did get her own short lived series but I was no big fan of hers

@EnigmaMaitreya No, I've linked them all to another question, which has more detail.
I liked Donna and Martha, and I like Clara very much.

2:22 PM
@Gallifreyan ddone

@Gallifreyan I guess close the 1,2,3 then Clara was she the Cave Girl? Never mind I am going to look her up
@Gallifreyan Oh, yea she(Clara) is really good.

the only strong opinion I do have on companions is that I like it when there's more than one of them

The Male Companion I like the most is the Star in math, kid,Adric.

Floofs:

@Gallifreyan Are you saying Adric was Floof?

2:28 PM
One more floof:
Dangerous floof ^

@Gallifreyan Were you referencing this movie? "Dark Fantasies": imdb.com/title/tt1982656

@EnigmaMaitreya I don't know who that is :D

@Gallifreyan Adric was a male companion of the Doctor

@EnigmaMaitreya I'm fairly sure I wasn't, especially given the synopsis: "Broke College students take part in a paid sleep-induced study where their dark sexual fantasies are realized. But when the professor joined the scenarios, it turns into nightmare."

@Gallifreyan Ha ha ha, just had to make sure :)

2:34 PM
I was thinking of more of a Hellboy-like dark fantasy :)

Ok, I know what I am going to recommend, "Big Trouble in Little China": imdb.com/title/tt1982656

Adric was a mathematical genius from E-space (don't ask) who stowed away on the TARDIS and one thing led to another.
I believe he also has the dubious distinction of being the first (only?) Doctor Who companion to actually straight-up die

@Ixrec Ah, but it was a Nobel death
Actually I have 3 Movies I can nominate now, depending on how the community is going.

that was a terrible pun

@ArtOfCode Ah, Nobel vs Noble That one got past the mind finger edit

2:46 PM
Actually, I think I'd want to nominate Hellboy 2
It's more dark fantasy.

conveniently I have yet to get around to watching either Hellboy

@Ixrec Good series of movies
Is Bellatrix still with us? If she is I may nominate "Corpse Bride" - imdb.com/title/tt0121164 For her, if not I may nominate it for myself :)

@EnigmaMaitreya Really? I didn't find it better than just an action movie

I haven't seen her around but that might be normal, I can't remember how often she's absent

@Edlothiad Oh I thought so, and would be up for watching them any time

2:51 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya I didn't think the plot was very stimulating. Or maybe I've just forgotten the first film.

@Edlothiad Hellboy was nice because of the characters and the atmosphere ;)

But I know I thought the second was just a bit strange

@Edlothiad But then again, "Ultraviolet" - imdb.com/title/tt0370032 is one of my top 10 movies. It is, in my opinion, one of those rare movies, where the action, the cadence (timing), music, and story are in sync. Such that one (me?) experiences the movie with all the senses synchronized

@Edlothiad That's what we're looking for.

@Edlothiad I second what @Gallifreyan said

2:53 PM
@Gallifreyan Films with bad plots?

Hello everybody

Perhaps a mod could super-ping a couple of the regulars who haven't shown up yet.
I'm thinking about @Slytherincess as well.
And others.

@EnigmaMaitreya in Hitchhiker's Guide? I'm not sure if we got a remotely serious explanation for this, my memory is it was just sort of there.

@SQB OR on the 404 page put a link to here
@Ixrec Yes, HHG
@SQB I accept a link to here from that page may not be what the message was about though

I know Sly is aware of this room, I think she's just not very active right now

3:00 PM
@Ixrec I keep trying to come up with plausible scenarios and can not.

SQB
@Ixrec Okay, cool.

@Ixrec I assume Sly is Bella?

to me rand has been the most conspicuous absence, I haven't even heard of anyone who claims to have seem him anywhere on the internet in the past week
@EnigmaMaitreya Sly = Slytherincess
Bella = Bellatrix
we're not quite that cryptic with our nicknames

SQB
@Ixrec He had some IRL reasons to be absent, prior to the incident.

ok

3:01 PM
@Ixrec Ok

kk

SQB
I must admit, I'm not sure what to make of the absence of all SFF mods from this room.

tbh that's nothing new

SQB
But I try not to fret too much about it.

and probably has a lot to do with the details of why what happened happened the way it happened
but moving on

3:03 PM
@SQB Shrug Invisibility, has its advantages. Meaning this room being invisiable

we've had a small army of off-site mods in here so it's probably fine

@EnigmaMaitreya Is it?

@Gallifreyan I think it has been pretty quite don't you?

SQB
I wonder if we could cool down the question about the closure of Mos away from the hot meta list.
Is that something a mod could do?

this room is probably the least quiet one on the entire network lol

3:04 PM
@Ixrec I was kind of meaning in regards to our previous incarnation

I can't actually think of any other regulars whose absense is unaccounted for

@SQB I could certainly delete my answer and all the messages with it, but the last time I was going to do something like that either journeyman or james had some well defined objections to deleting answers

Best we can do is just not bump it. And post that new film night announcement. I'll get to it in an hour or so.

yeah deleting is definitely not the way to go

So I shouldn't make a new meta about getting the transcript from Mos? (for suggestions on Fantasy books I'd starred)

3:11 PM
@Gallifreyan did you want to do the "recap" thing too? I'm not really sure what to put in one
(also I have to go right now)
@Edlothiad I'd not do that

@Ixrec But there were Fantasy recommendations as well as what ST series to watch and skip amongst other recommendations I'd quite like to have

@Edlothiad Just my opinion, that Room should be erased from memory and we should be clear that the existence of this room is conditional. As in, it is my opinion, we want to be a new room with no baggage.

@EnigmaMaitreya Agree to Disagree, but ok, I'll leave it out

BUT Time tends to heal all things, there is nothing saying that maybe 6 months from now ....

I think I answered this too late
0
A: Are the Valar vulnerable to the One Ring?

EdlothiadNo, they are not vulnerable to The One Ring I'll approach this answer from 2 sides. Why they wouldn't be tempted by the Ring Why the Ring would never be in question Finally, I'll clear up some misconceptions in other answers, just to be clear. Why would the Valar not be tempted by the Ring?...

3:20 PM
@Edlothiad Just my opinion, all 3 answers give the same answer with different supporting evidence. IF I had to choose between the 3, I would choose yours, the one by Forrest Venable had an interesting supporting evidence though.

@EnigmaMaitreya He contradicts himself. And I'm lost as to what he means in his final paragraph. I just decided to answer as I had a bit more to give than the other two

We agree. This is what I was refering to "Note that Galadriel associates going West with resisting the Ring's temptation:

“I pass the test”, she said. “I will diminish, and go into the West and remain Galadriel.”"

I don't follow. Going west means you're able to resist temptation?

@Edlothiad In just 137 rep points you'll be able to see the transcript yourself.
Because people with 10k rep network-wide can see deleted rooms.

In just 500 rep points, I'll be able to review reviews!
Watch out Gallifreyan. Hope you haven't been using the NAN button too often!

3:25 PM
@Edlothiad I take it that Going West is the desired place to be and her resisting power was the Test. It supports the assertion that the Ring can be resisted.

Guilty.

That's a lot of declined ahah
but I meant "No Action Needed"

@Edlothiad I was once banned from flagging for two days in a row because of declined flags
So far 4 "No action needed" on 5 pages of my reviews.

@Gallifreyan I have a 93.5% accepted flag rate. Maybe you get too excited
@Gallifreyan You shant be getting a talking to then :P
@EnigmaMaitreya, do you mind checking my answer again to see if my angry ramble at the end was ok or just inappropriate?

@Edlothiad Sometimes I flag an answer I'm not sure of just to get the people from the review queue to review it.
I still think the bottom 3 answers here are crap and don't deserve the space they occupy.
I think the "very low quality" and "not an answer" flags are made exactly for the likes of those.

3:37 PM
Your man has spoken
Let's not delete this, please. Though it is unsourced and dubious, it is comprehensible and answers the question. — Adamant 11 hours ago

@Edlothiad Just my opinion, "Now we've covered that The Valar would never be tempted and never have to worry as the Ring wouldn't reach them, lets clear up some things." is confrontational and there is not linked or given reason to be. "The Valar would never be tempted", is sufficient. The Conclusion is great but invites the TLDR (To long did not read).

Oh god my network wide rep isn't a multiple of 5! Time to suggest an edit on lit
@EnigmaMaitreya So just scrap the whole end bit?

@Edlothiad I wouldnt, I would make that one change and keep the conclusion part.

@Edlothiad Ask a question about Icelandic sagas and you'll get a 100 rep bounty from me ^_^

So I just removed the confrontational bit
@Gallifreyan Why?

3:39 PM
Because we need a question on

I would ask questions about the Kalevala but most of them would amount to "wtf just happened?"

@Edlothiad That works for me

@Ixrec What?
Isn't the Kalevala basically the Original Children of Hurin?

never heard of this Hurin thing

You Tolkien buffs:
0
A: Are the Valar vulnerable to the One Ring?

chxThe Valar have such vast power that the Ring, containing a portion of the power of a Maia would be nothing to them and so they would have no reason to wear it. The visions of power the Ring can project into the mind of someone to corrupt them is a joke to the power they already hold. They partici...

3:41 PM
that sounds right to a non-buff like me

It's right, but doesn't add much

> [Children of Hurin] is mainly based on the legend of Kullervo, a character from the Finnish folklore poems known as Kalevala. Tolkien drew inspiration from the Kalevala for "The Story of Kullervo" in 1914, which was to become the model for his tale of Túrin.

@Gallifreyan Shrug The same answer with no supporting evidence as to why.

@Edlothiad so, that would be "no", though there is a connection

@Ixrec You can, why not?

3:43 PM
@Gallifreyan I am also not sure what he can add to his answer that @Edlothiad has not included, as in making his answer unique.

my memory is that the Kullervo subplot took up maybe a quarter to a third of the Kalevala
@Gallifreyan well, "Why did they spend an entire chapter on this girl's mom lecturing her on how miserable her marriage is going to be?" isn't exactly an answerable question for this site =P
also why only one guy had to cross a river of lava to get to that wedding

@Ixrec Thanks :) I've not actually read those... yet
@Ixrec I think he meant Lit

I actually did ask one or two questions on Lit about it, no one ever answered

@Ixrec That one sounds suitable.

the one that I'm actually personally interested is how in the Kalevala being a great singer is a manly thing and exceptional singing ability is sufficiently magical that you can kill people with it, and I'm curious to what extent that's a thing in Scandinavian culture versus just the Kalevala

@Gallifreyan, I don't like that edit. I think we should use over

@Edlothiad But it's not about the rings, it's about the ring.

@Gallifreyan But The Ring is one of the rings

There are 20, yes? 9+7+3=?

Actually it looks like a lot of questions are about

3:51 PM
@Gallifreyan Yes, TOR should be a synonym of ROP

@Edlothiad But it has 135 questions of its own.

Merge
@Gallifreyan Some of which probably aren't about TOR but say the word TOR

Lol - the tag excerpt for
> The Rings of Power are twenty magical rings in the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, most notably the One Ring which also has its own tag.

eitherway I need a grill cheese sandwich and then to do some work, adios for now!
If the HNQ people upvoted the best answer in that tolkien question I met get flag priveleges in chat...

@Edlothiad Good luck ;)

I got a TL;DR for my answer!
The Ring corrupts because it gives you power: it is a tool of 'command and domination', of persuasion and influence, charged up with much of Sauron's power. (The real 'corruption' of the Ring is nothing more than the normal desire for power over others - that's why it corrupts people who've never even seen it.) The Valar are much more powerful than Sauron to start with: the Ring has nothing to offer them that they would not already be capable of. — Shamshiel 3 mins ago

@Mithrandir :p

I think back in the day one called the above, getting schooled

I wouldn't go that far, but it does look like the point where one ought to downvote or move to chat rather than attempt more comments

muruIn the Framework, after Jemma confronts Coulson and leaves, he takes out a folder that contains, among other things, a postcard from Tahiti, and a page filled with "It's a magical place" repeatedly written on it. That's pretty clearly about Coulson's resurrection. But I'm not very clear about the...

do not proceed with the schooling unless the recipient appears interested in being schooled further
