Q: 60s sci-fi novel about New Mexico A&M

alienengineerAbout 1963, I read a book that could have been one of Heinlein or Asimov’s Juvies. It had a reference to the Co-op Engineering program at what had been New Mexico A & M (Now New Mexico State), with the protagonist doing some work at White Sands. It pretty much set me on the career path that I hav...

Q: Identify sci-fi movie about sphere on a moon or planet

FortunetellerProbably from 60's or 70's, only remember a scene. A sphere on the moon or planet, that opened up and you looked into darkness, it tried to or did pull you in and then closed. Finds a woman in space suit like his under the dirt digs her out and they get into space ship to leave.

Q: What's the best way to respectfully discuss stories which fictionalize religious subjects?

@CreationEdge I don't know - but I don't think so. The point of the video room is that we find a video that is already uploaded elsewhere, so no one has to spend money or go to shady websites to acquire a copy.

Q: Why is Newt Scamander not credited for defeating Grindelwald too?

LCIIIIf you consider "defeating" him to be disarming the guy, capturing him, and getting him thrown in prison, why isn't Newt Scamander famous for defeating Gellert Grindelwald the way that Dumbledore is?

@Edlothiad Thank you for providing yet further proof of a statement that is already undeniable.

@DrRDizzle Because once you're in the tunnel you have to be quick

@Edlothiad Huh?

1:23 PM
@DrRDizzle Why does he dive as soon as he reaches cover? he could've just kept running

@Edlothiad Presumably, throwing yourself into a large explosion is less painful than running into one. It's physics.

@DrRDizzle A great example of PJ's knowledge

Peter Jackson had the wisdom and intelligence to realise that the Lord of the Rings books are 40% garbage that needed binning from the get go. I'll forgive him a few Rule of Cool moments for that.

@DrRDizzle What he didn't realise is he isn't the best movie maker and made some disappointing adaptations of the remaining 60%

@Edlothiad I'm no Peter Jackson fan, believe me. But those films are as good as they could have possibly been.

1:33 PM
@DrRDizzle agree to disagree

@Edlothiad I'm physically incapable of doing that.
Ask anyone, they'll back me up there.

tries to imagine how that would work biologically

The part of my brain that can let an argument go never developed properly.
It's a condition called "Being an opinionated asshole". There is no cure.

@DrRDizzle the films are action movies, the books are modern mythology, striking at the very core of the human condition and attempting to uncover the divine. It's really just a matter of what you want out of the series

Who starred me getting locked in this time...

1:38 PM
stop saying funny things and we'll stop starring you

@Babelfish You are tough!

@DaaaahWhoosh The books are just a good vs evil adventure my man, same as the films. I think you might have attributed a little too much literary intelligence to a book series that predominantly seems to exist so that Tolkien can invent languages and write songs.

@DrRDizzle I disagree, but am too lazy to go looking for citations

not that I have a strong opinion either way on LotR, but "seems to exist so that Tolkien can invent languages" <-- didn't Tolkein himself explicitly say this was the case?

@Ixrec Probably, but in Elvish or something.

1:41 PM
@Ixrec pretty much. But it's a worldbuilding thing, when you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back
there's a point in any sort of creation where you begin to feel like the things you're making aren't yours, that they already exist somewhere and you're just rediscovering them

I meant that in a way more mundane way lol

yeah, sorry, I just like to defend worldbuilding as more than just making stuff up.
plus, Tolkien also said he was trying to make up an English mythology that previously did not exist. It seems like a lot of the races/creatures he invented were based on Old English words that people didn't know how to translate
so, LotR shouldn't really be compared to most modern fantasy, it's more in line with Beowulf or maybe the Illiad
3
I think modern readers expect it to be something it never intended to be, so it ends up falling short

the Iliad was a bit more to the point than LotR

I can't buy any of that. This world started with the line "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit". It started of as whimsical children's fantasy, only Tolkien got a little bit full of himself and tried to turn them into a grandiose epic.

eh, like I said I'm too lazy to look up sources

1:50 PM
the mythology of LotR I find very interesting despite having no interest in sitting down and reading any of the books cover-to-cover, everything I know comes from answers on this site
come to think of it it's a bit like Dark Souls in that I have zero interest in trying to play the games again but the lore is fascinating

the way I see it, I'd rather read the Silmarillion than the Bible, and they should both have the same effect
so I'm reading the Silmarillion

I personally prefer the epic poems like the Iliad, Odyssey and Aenead since they're consistently entertaining stories to read in addition to establishing a bunch of mythology
I think I'd say the same of LotR if it was trimmed in places but it's been too long since I read it to say for sure

when I read it, I never felt like it was too long. But that's just me

I'm pretty sure I skipped the Elven poetry

@DrRDizzle It actually starts with the Ainulindale which I believe was written in 1915, around 22 years before Tolkien's The Hobbit

@SQB Is the fact that Arthur endured it supposed to say something about Earth poetry in general? My memory of the film is fuzzy.

@Edlothiad My order of HNQ-ness is -> ->
Which is usually the order for their difficulty level.

was Moria built by ring-dwarves? That might explain why it was so big

@Edlothiad i didn't know if he was really Ñoldor but this picture is captioned "Elrond, Gil-Galad, and their army of Ñoldorin elves" so i just put him in the same group

2:59 PM
What's a ring dwarf?

@Edlothiad A dwarf shaped like a ring.
Or possibly a dwarf planet with rings.

Then yes Moria was built by ring dwarves

@Edlothiad oh, I meant a ringbearer who was a dwarf

Oh there were 7, and they were everywhere, so no, doesn't explain why
The ring's made the dwarves greedy.

yeah, but I thought it specifically made them dig deeper

3:04 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Don't think so, that was just their desire for Mithril. Because they wanted Mithril
So I've repcapped 60 below 10k...

@Edlothiad Ha ha.

@Edlothiad maybe that was head-canon then. I liked to think the rings made them desire to delve ever deeper into the earth, until they broke through to the ruins of... that place that is underground where the balrogs and dragons live.

@DaaaahWhoosh I believe they were given out after the Downfall of Moria
Considering it's known as the Ring of Thror
@Bellerophon Time to make 30 wiki edits!

Re-open vote for those who can: scifi.stackexchange.com/review/reopen/105277
@Bellerophon Although I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow morning with 10k
@Edlothiad You're wrong. The Ring of Thror was given to Durin III by Celebrimbor, even though Tolkien later says that Celebrimbor gave all the Rings back to Sauron after being tortured and killed. So who to believe, I don't know

Q: What is the meaning of "Ex Lux", the name of Lucifer Morningstar's new bar?

GallifreyanI've been a fan of Mike Carey's Lucifer comic series, for its believable portrait of a fallen angel. The series spun off from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, which established this incarnation of Lucifer Morningstar. In short, Lucifer gets tired of the role given to him by God, so he abandons Hell an...

For the time being, we should assume anyone saying something offends them is doing so in good faith and respect that. Only after we see a pattern of people abusing that privilege should we rethink that.
@Axelord one to keep in mind ^

I also think it's worth pointing out Bellerophon's answer to the question about this room... the attitude toward flagging is part of the problem.

A: General chat room: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

BellerophonI wasn't in Mos Eisley at the time of it being frozen so I may be wrong about this but I feel a big problem with Mos was its attitude towards flagging. Many users insulted flaggers as cowards and had an us-and-them mentality about flaggers. This led to me (and possibly other users) seeing content...

@ArtOfCode yet no one will admit when there is a pattern and tell those who say there is one that they are the crazy ones

actually, most mods tend to be very good at recognising patterns of behaviour
it being our job, and all

let's just drop it and move on

Wow, we need chatroom problems more often. That's two meta badges with that answer.

guys, please, seriously, stop

Q: Does Harry ever apologise for something that was his fault?

albusseverus potterFor the purpose of writing an English paper, I need to find examples of Harry Potter apologizing and making amends for a problem that he truly was the cause of, but can't find any.

Q: How does Luna's new wand work?

albusseverus potterIn Harry Potter, the fact that "The wand chooses the wizard" becomes a main plot point. Wands will not work for you properly if they either didn't choose you, or if you didn't win them in battle. But in The Deathly Hallows, after escaping from Malfoy Manor, Ollivander crafts and sends Luna a new ...

@Skooba Mkay. You, clearly, have your own fixed viewpoint. I have mine. Let's move on.

I'm happy to freeze the room for an hour if necessary.

Anyone else feel is conversation is slightly ominous?

@Ixrec and thank you for being a peacekeeper :)

@Mithrandir and maybe some of other nice people here

@CreationEdge erm. I have a feeling that that would just make things worse.

Also, big Star Wars anniversary on the 25th,I believe. We could celebrate that somehow

@CreationEdge sigh Sure, why not.

it's an option
we could all watch Attach of the Clones and MST3K it together

@CreationEdge Yeah... 40 years. :D Andy's 40th birthday is Friday (the 19th)

How are you guys not doing a special movie night for May 25th? — phantom42 yesterday

user132126
@DCOPTimDowd Well, Asimov in awesome, I was just picking from our most popular topics

@Gallifreyan Not a SW fan?

dramatic silence

come to think of it, I've never watched the Despecialized Edition

@CreationEdge I like Star Wars. Just don't know how to organise a SW event.

I have no idea how to organize any event

@Ixrec You still owe us a recap from the last film night!

8:42 PM
oh that's mandatory?

Is there a special way to share a SE question to the chat?

nope, just post the link

@Ixrec Not really. I guess it's not if there was nothing noteworthy.

the only "special" thing is that if you post the link without any additional text before or after it then SE chat will "onebox" it

@Ixrec Okay. Wasn't sure if that was a mod-only thing.
@Ixrec What's that?

8:44 PM
the big white boxes

Try it and see

Q: Could I fake death to stop being Force-choked?

Hannover FistI work for a large government organization. My boss is a total jerk who abuses those working under him. I've tried contacting HR before but they won't do anything about him. Anyways, I screwed up again. My jerk boss is going to be super pissed. I came out of hyperspace too close to some stupid ...

user132126
@Gallifreyan It's probably a challenge, because the SW movies are notoriously clamped down on as far as streaming goes. You can't even rent them most places.

^ that is a question "onebox"

@Ixrec It's really nice, I think.

8:45 PM
@CreationEdge That's Disney for you, no?

Q: Could Luke have killed Yoda?

DCOPTimDowdFrom the script (emphasis added): Nervously, he looks around at the foreboding jungle. LUKE: Still...there's something familiar about this place. I feel like...I don't know... STRANGE VOICE: Feel like what? Luke jumps out of his skin. Artoo screeches in terror. The young wa...

Q: Why doesn't Castiel get his wings back?

albusseverus potterIn Supernatural, Castiel is tricked into giving up his Grace, the source of his Angelic powers,including his wings, and falls from heaven. In the process he loses those wings. The same thing (or a very similar thing) happened to the Angel Anna earlier in the series, and though she goes for a wh...

^definitely not a mod... :/

user132126
@Gallifreyan It's been like that since before the acquisition, though. I remember trying to rent them when Blockbuster was still open, and they didn't have them.

@CreationEdge Really? Huh. I don't remember having trouble getting them, but I guess I've always had a copy of my own.

user132126
I didn't. I didn't want to buy the boxed sets, either, because they've never dropped in price.

8:48 PM
my parents had the VHS versions the entire time I was living with them so I also never had that issue

user132126
Any time the sets are aged enough to be worth discounting, Lucasfilms just releases a new version instead.

Newer, crappier version, I think you mean.

user132126
Well, sometimes it's just changing the packaging or special features.

remember that time they added an extra rock to the cave R2D2 hides in? completely changed my viewing experience
3
also pink lightsabers

user132126
@NickRueckert Welcome

8:53 PM
@Ixrec Was there a reason for this? I couldn't imagine how R2D2 would even get in the cave to begin with, unless the rock was a holoprojection. The rock is a lie.

beats me

user132126
I remember them adding random CGI creatures to the environment and felt like... What's the point? If they were there originally it would have been a nice touch, but they stood out so much being CGI that it was jarring.

retcon CGI Jabba didn't look that great either
normally I'm the last person to complain about "bad CGI" but that actually was bad

I know that texting in theaters is horrid but I think this is a bit over the top: statesman.com/news/local/…

the phrase "crossing the line twice" comes to mind

@Mooz Nice one! I was too lazy to read closely.
