When should I use "\ " and when \: in math?

7:20 AM
@Bubaya you shouldn't have to use either very often, but probably almost never use \
@Bubaya where are you needing to add space?

@DavidCarlisle I am trying to fiddle around with spaces in products of the form $\gamma_{1,2}\,\gamma_{2,1}\gamma_{2,3}\,\gamma_{3,2}\gamma_{3,4}\,\dotsc$ to increase legibility and do some "logical" grouping.
@DavidCarlisle And when I looked up which spacing commands are available, I wondered about the difference between \: and \

@Bubaya I think the proper way is $\gamma_{1,2}$, $\gamma_{2,1}$, …
Oops, forget that. I see you want a product, not a list. Sorry.
Anyhow, the places I am most tempted to use \ in math, is to separate conditions in a display as in …
[u_t+uu_x=0,\qquad t>0,\ x\in\mathbb{R }]

@HaraldHanche-Olsen …which I would type [u_t+uu_x=0\quad\text{for $t>0$, $x\in\mathbb{R}$]
Anyhow, if I am tempted to add spacing into math, I do so based on my naive opinion, lacking knowledge about properly typesetting math.

7:46 AM
@DavidCarlisle Would you explain to me the difference between a thick space and a "normal" space, please?

@Bubaya That is the usual recommendation, but I admit to being too lazy to adhere to it much.
@Bubaya The more obvious difference is that one is defined in terms of the mu unit, which is related to the current math font, while the other gives the spacing corresponding to an ordinary space in the current text font. So \; seems more logical to apply in a math setting, while \ may be useful where you would otherwise use a space, such as in the example I gave.

Hello guyz , I need help in this questions :
0
Q: How can I make an text hyperlink to a picture in a LaTeX document?

Icche GuriProblem no 1 : I want to try making a text hyperlink . If I click this link , this will redirect to a picture within the pdf of latex . My endeavors : I have tried the following code : \documentclass{article} \usepackage{hyperref,graphicx} \begin{document} \begin{figure} ...

@IccheGuri In what way? You only posted it a few minutes ago

But I think my code should work .
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hyperref,graphicx}
\begin{document}
    \begin{figure}
      \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{general_view_of_mcc.png}
      \caption{General view of MCC}
      \label{fig:boat1}
    \end{figure}
    Figure \ref{fig:boat1} shows a boat.
\end{document}
Now I want to click in the text "fig:boat1" and want to go in the image named general_view_of_mcc.png .
I also want that the text "fig:boat1" will act like as alink .

@IccheGuri Yes, it does, but as it's on the same page it might not be obvious

8:01 AM
how can I make fig:baot1 as in the above picture ?

@IccheGuri You won't get that out of the example: with no options, hyperref will but a box around the link, which will just be the number (and which will be 1 not 2)

I cant get your statement .

@IccheGuri That needs some different settings
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[demo]{graphicx}

\usepackage{hyperref}
\hypersetup{hidelinks}
\begin{document}
    \begin{figure}
      \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{general_view_of_mcc.png}
      \caption{General view of MCC}
      \label{fig:boat1}
    \end{figure}
    \autoref{fig:boat1} shows a boat.
\end{document}
@IccheGuri ^^^ makes the entire 'Figure 1' a link and removes the border

@samcarter Whatever; if I have to choose, use the full name.

@JosephWright, ok I want to the color of the text "Figure 1 " in blue color .

8:10 AM
@Bubaya \: is a a a math skip of size \medmuskip, so the space added around binary operators like + (\; is thickmuskip so the space added around relations like =) and \ is not a math space at all it is the inter-word space from the surrounding text font.
@samcarter if you add my roast duck suggestion, you can use my real name in the acknowledgements:-)

@DavidCarlisle So, I get the same spacing for {}={} and \;=\;?
@DavidCarlisle Is there /any/ use for \ in (inline) math mode?

@Bubaya you get same form a=b and a\;{=}\;b
@Bubaya no (well someone can always think of some plausible use, but "no" is the simplest and possibly most correct answer)

@DavidCarlisle Good to know. And to you know of an example where \; or \: are necessary or at least useful (and not added by TeX automatically)?

@Bubaya they can be useful for spacing things in macros that don't get spaced right (or that need asymmetric spacing), so things using \middle for example only get \mathord spacing but are usually logically mathrel or mathbin so might need space either side but if using them remember that they are parameterised spaces. It is Ok to use a\;b (for some a and b) so long as what you mean is a{the space that gets put either side of +}b
@Bubaya because if some class sets \medmuskip to a different value to suit the font choices in some journal, it will change the spacing around binary operators like + and - but also change your explicit \; space.

@DavidCarlisle I see your point. Until now, I always solved mostly all my spacing issues by adding mathrel mathop where appropriate, or by {} around operations/relations. Is that advisable practise?
@DavidCarlisle In the (ugly) case that I use a different text font than math font: I suppose "\ " changes only with the text font. Do \; etc. only change with the math font?
Or do the muskip's have to be set manually (or in a class)?

8:24 AM
@Bubaya yes sure it's generally better to specify the class of the term as \mathrel{...} and let tex handle the spacing consistently, than to add spaces, but there are cases where that doesn't do quite the right thing and you have to take control
@Bubaya \; is \def\;{\mskip\thickmuskip} and \thickmuskip is set anywhere but in latex it defaults to \thickmuskip=5mu plus 5mu and a mu unit is 1/18 em from the font in family 2. Note that math units get smaller in subscripts as it takes the font from fam2 from the current mathsyle

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[demo]{graphicx}
\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\hypersetup{colorlinks, linkcolor = blue}
\begin{document}
    \begin{figure}
      \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{general_view_of_mcc.png}
      \caption{General view of MCC}
      \label{fig:boat1}
    \end{figure}
    \autoref{fig:boat1} shows a boat.
\end{document}
@IccheGuri ^^^

8:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle I see, I should go now and correct my math mode spacings… Thank you for your explanations!

8:51 AM
@DavidCarlisle There is cook duck, but it may not be what you think it is..

Is it possible to change the appearance of the table number for one table, like with \tag for equations?

9:23 AM
@Bubaya That sounds like a strange thing to do, are you sure that this is really what you need to do?

@mickep What I try to do: I have three tables, all with the same columns and tables b, c are "special cases" of a. I try to build one big tabular, with captionof's in between. However, I want them to be numbered Table nnn b,c).
I do not want to use separate table environments or subtables because I want the column widths to be equal (and do not want to fiddle with phantoms)

@Bubaya this will do:
  \renewcommand{\thetable}{X}
  \caption{A table}
  \label{tbl:X}
  \addtocounter{table}{-1}
All inside the table environment, of course.

Yes. This is also what I did so far.
Thank you!

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Nice, you are quicker than I am!

Last strange question :) Is it possible to access the table width /inside/ the table?
(of course, I can imagine creating some infinite loop here, but assume I do not)

9:51 AM
@samcarter I'm not sure if you know what "cook duck" means (compared to "duck cook") ;-)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Did not manage do format this nicely though. Resorted to multiple tables and \makebox[\widthof{…}]'s

@Bubaya Surely, that is unrelated to how the table number looks? Not at all sure I understand your problem. But then I am not really a table expert – far from it.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yes, that is unrelated to my number problem. But I struggled with other problems at what I wanted to achieve with changing the numbering. Anyway, it's okay now.

1 hour later…
11:23 AM
@UlrikeFischer Probably not - I just tried to make up a name for a duck based on its profession which could be interpreted in both ways so to fulfil @DavidCarlisle request for a roasted duck.

1 hour later…
12:26 PM
@samcarter Has @DavidCarlisle already requested the pizza=pineapple key?

@TeXnician pizza=duck would be nicely recursive (if cannibalistic)

@TeXnician I refuse to commit such a crime against pizza!

12:46 PM
@samcarter Then omit the commit message ;)

@NicolaTalbot people who put spaces in filenames deserve no sympathy.

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle See your point about just dropping all " marks
@DavidCarlisle Will reply properly a bit later

1:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle I have made my question clearer :) tex.stackexchange.com/q/389654/66964
Michael recommended me to use pdfimageresolution but this breaks depending o the engine and if the image has dpi info in it, it overrides this global command. So your solution (computing the size with sbox) is definitely the bets here, I think.

What is the space available for an equation? Certainly at most \textwidth-\mathindent, but that will move the equation number to the bottom. By the way, how is the equation number moved down if necessary?
Hm. Maybe \textwidth-\mathindent-\widthof{(\theequation)}, but there is still some length missing.

2:16 PM
Quack from SP!

2:36 PM
@PauloCereda Quack!

@PauloCereda Kvack, as we say in Sweden.

3:15 PM
@mickep so close to Kwak, yummy!

Kvakk!
(That's Norwegian.)

@yo' Indeed! @HaraldHanche-Olsen Oh, with three k's.

@PauloCereda Dinner!

So quiet...

hello

Sshhh … I was enjoying the quiet … listen to the crickets!
… and the quacking of ducks in the distance …

how can I do this in latex ?
@HaraldHanche-Olsen

@IccheGuri You wish to implement a kernel-based virtual machine in LaTeX? I think there are better ways to spend your time.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ducks? I would have guessed fishes in Norway! ;)

6:55 PM
@mickep Fishes don't quack.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Not even in the distance, that is true...

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ,nice joke

@IccheGuri To be more specific, what part of that image do you have problem to typeset?

Now can you give directions to do this in latex ?
I think the is the name of paragraph .
Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM)
right ?
I have written the following code :
\paragraph{Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM)}
The virtualization infrastructure used in the prototype is KVM [32].
But for the above code I am getting this output :

@mickep But this one quacks:

7:04 PM
I want output like this :

How can I get my expected ouput ?

@IccheGuri Do you wish for \paragraph alway to give that output, or do you just want this as a one-off item?

I just want this as a one-off item .

If the latter, it's easy: \noindent\textbf{Kernel-based …}\par The virtualization …

Probably better replace the explicit \par by a blank line.

@UlrikeFischer Please see image above.

@samcarter What the heck is this creature?

Is it a dounckey?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen A donkey duck
@mickep correct :)

7:08 PM
Thanks man It works
@HaraldHanche-Olsen
Btw , I am active follower of stackoverflow .
I always get active in android group
Can I get familiar to you ?

@IccheGuri I'm pretty new here, and I think this is a very friendly place to be. I hope you too will feel comfortable here.

And don't worry too much about the incessant sniping between some of the high ranking individuals in here. It's all just a game. And quite entertaining to bystanders.

@CarLaTeX Good idea! I will do it ASAP

@samcarter :):):)

@CarLaTeX in other news: version 0.4 is on it's way to ctan, should be online tomorrow.

@samcarter Yay! Have to found a better way to do the stripes?

@CarLaTeX No. I decided to leave it as it is for this version and possibly revisit it for the next. Or maybe ask another code-review question - the last one was really helpful. If you have any good ideas they would be very appreciated!

@samcarter Does anybody know tikz? With the possible exception of its author, of course. I have a feeling that the rest of us just muddle along, copying the work of others, adapting it to our own needs, and hoping for the best. I know that is how I do it, anyway.

@samcarter :)

@CarLaTeX you need someone with a gold badge to help.

@DavidCarlisle Would you like to help us? You have a gold one!

@CarLaTeX I could simplify the coding and replace all this non standard tikz stuff by standard picture mode commands

@DavidCarlisle If you can do it with few options, you are very welcome :)

8:08 PM
@CarLaTeX I could add some pizza toppings at the same time, plus some recipe variants

@DavidCarlisle There is already a pizza duck :P

@CarLaTeX see what I did for donkeys don't you think ducks would look better in this style?

@DavidCarlisle Seems like I have chosen the wrong method to draw ducks :)

@samcarter Shouldn't there be a rapier?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen I could offer a futuristic Zorro with lighsaber?

@samcarter Blasphemy!

@samcarter my thoughts exactly

@DavidCarlisle For sure syntax highlighting would have been much easier with picture mode :)
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Progress :)

@wget no sorry I got distracted by urgent requests to help @samcarter with her package: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/39815467#39815467

No problem :) Just that I'm loosing way too much time on this issue and you (or someone else way more advanced than me) could have provided to me the solution in seconds rather than hours/days for me :D
