12:43 AM
@egreg -- ugh. thanks. i'll look at this tomorrow and probably get in touch with you by mail.

3 hours later…
3:20 AM
@DavidCarlisle You should put your answer here: tex.stackexchange.com/q/346695/101651! :):):)

3 hours later…
6:20 AM
@PauloCereda Are you saying that @DavidCarlisle is average?
@samcarter Much better.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen LOL, I hope not a standard deviation!

6:59 AM
@samcarter Don't clip the sword :)

1 hour later…
8:29 AM
@CarLaTeX that was a coincidence :) tex.stackexchange.com/a/389802/36296

@samcarter Upvoted :)

9:11 AM
@DavidCarlisle I see you've found Git branches useful ;)

9:28 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh no

@JosephWright we'll see how easy it is to merge back in the end:-)
@PauloCereda ^^^ "you are mean" sounds better than "you are above the 99.97%-ile"

@DavidCarlisle :)

9:45 AM
@DavidCarlisle Should be fine (I can always do that)
@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright yes I just need to read up how to just merge the bits that need merging (assuming the experiment works out and we have something to merge back:-) in particular not the test versions of graphics.sty and friends.

10:19 AM
@DavidCarlisle Just do a commit to remove them first

@JosephWright that sounds like cheating:-) I'm sure I'm supposed to be able to merge back to master while still keeping everything in the branch in case of further development?

@DavidCarlisle Well yes and no: if you merger files you'll loose the commit history
@DavidCarlisle Just make another branch, possibly rebasing to 'remove' the files entirely from the history

@JosephWright I know we should have stuck to svn :-)
(not that it's much easier with svn:-)

@DavidCarlisle Same issue, surely? If you want to merge a branch you still can;t just pick files without loosing the history?
220
Q: How do I merge changes to a single file, rather than merging commits?

IsuruI have two branches A and B and, I want to merge branch A's single file with Branch B's corresponding file. How can I do that?

@JosephWright thanks. Need to get the branched code working first, but will come back to that later.
@JosephWright I'm vaguely leaning towards making \IfFileExists{foo bar} work, and then not adding so many quotes in the graphics package use of this command. But perhaps I'm getting too brave in my old age.

10:35 AM
@DavidCarlisle To be honest that would be my call too: really we need to cut down on the 'patch the kernel after the fact' stuff, particularly for this type of basic operation

@DavidCarlisle ew empty spaces

In physics, horror vacui, or plenism, is commonly stated as "Nature abhors a vacuum." It is a postulate attributed to Aristotle, who articulated a belief, later criticized by the atomism of Epicurus and Lucretius, that nature contains no vacuums because the denser surrounding material continuum would immediately fill the rarity of an incipient void. He also argued against the void in a more abstract sense, (as "separable"), for example, that by definition a void, itself, is nothing, and following Plato, nothing cannot rightly be said to exist. Furthermore, in so far as it would be featureless,...
@PauloCereda ↑↑↑

@HaraldHanche-Olsen my poor ducky brain hurts
@yo' ooooh

@JosephWright well a possibly less disruptive alternative would be to document that the syntax for files with spaces is \input{"foo bar"} or similarly \includegraphics{"foo bar"} or \includegraphics{"foo bar.png"} and arrange that the filename parser still sees that as extension .png rather than .png"

10:50 AM
@DavidCarlisle How about filenames with double quotes in them? And down the rabbit hole we go …

@HaraldHanche-Olsen that is easy. web2c based tex can not see them \input{a"b.tex} inputs ab.tex

@DavidCarlisle So it's easy because it's impossible? Interesting. But you can certainly argue that it's not your problem.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen problems are divided into the (hopefully empty set) of "my fault" and the rest which are "not my fault". So long as the first set is empty, all is well.

@DavidCarlisle :)

@DavidCarlisle You could have a function that maps the "my fault" empty into the "not my fault" set. :)

10:55 AM
@yo' Thanks for that link, I'm now becoming a poor man...

And this function must be injective and non-surjective. :)

@PauloCereda we could call it "just blame @egreg"

@DavidCarlisle LOL

Hmm … I notice that the TeX book is a bit vague on the subject of fillenames (p. 278).

11:21 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen I believe DEK shares the same opinion of @DavidCarlisle:
Jan 21 '14 at 12:33, by David Carlisle
@NicolaTalbot people who put spaces in filenames deserve no sympathy.
:)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen it's vague and explicitly system dependent. But since now (almost) all tex systems are based on web2c and are on unix/mac/windows with a hierarchical filesystem the system-dependent part is not so much of an issue

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle All the more reason to revisit some of this stuff and 'standardise'

@JosephWright that seems to be a logical conclusion

@DavidCarlisle Great minds and all that ;)

@JosephWright back to team list I guess

11:41 AM
I had forgotten that web2c.pdf exists. Quite illuminating. They still suggest “8+3” filenames for “maximal portability”.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen and it is still true (for maximal portability) :)

@mickep Does anybody still run TeX on DOS, I wonder?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Looking at the documents some of my colleagues produce, I suspect that could be possible. :D

12:19 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen when I last looked at the filename parser for latex2e (that I'm looking at now) we also had to make it work on systems that had no extensions at all (\documentclass{article} had to load a file article from a directory cls) or that didn't use / as path separator (VMS, MacOS) or that had no directory structure at all (various IBM mainframes...)

TikZ people, is it possible to use the fit library to enclose elements in a non-rectangular fashion?
See the bottom left. :)

@egreg trying to steal a tick by application of xparse. So just a standard day at the office....

@campa why did you delete your answer?

@PauloCereda The fit node can have any normal node shape, see e.g. the recent tex.stackexchange.com/questions/389824/…

12:34 PM
@TorbjørnT. Ah thanks, I will take a look!

12:55 PM
@daleif 'cause you had a fair point and didn't remember that bit. Plus I haven't time to fix the answer within a short time. I thought I'd make place for better answers...

2 hours later…
2:56 PM
@PauloCereda A colleague of mine broke any record: two different programs named "crea tasso default" and "crea_tasso_default"

@CarLaTeX LOL

3:06 PM
Friends, how would you denote: a_3 \equiv r \gets t, c \gets 0 such that r and c are clearly two different things?

@PauloCereda Huh?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Sorry, I understand it's confusing. :) Let me rephrase.
@HaraldHanche-Olsen r \gets t and c \gets 0 are two attributions. I'd like to put then in the same line with a clear distinction that they are not only one expression.

@PauloCereda And putting a word like “and” between them is not an option?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Wow, I haven't considered this option. D'oh! Thanks!

@PauloCereda My pleasure. By the way, did you know that the word “and” in Norwegian means duck?

3:14 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen OH MY, REALLY?!
I LOVE NORWEGIAN FROM NOW ON

@PauloCereda Yup. Andestek is roast duck. Yum.
(Quick, someone, throw some water on Paulo. I think he fainted.)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Oh no

@HaraldHanche-Olsen water famously has no effect on ducks, it's like water off a duck's back.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen You are mean too :)

@PauloCereda No, just average.

3:19 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh a math joke

4:13 PM
@JosephWright Are you interested in answering a question on LC? Seems that a very deep understanding of LaTeX and TeX is needed to answer it. Or am i misinterpreting the question? latex.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=102066#p102066

4:28 PM
@Johannes_B \includegraphics{diagram} ?

@Johannes_B One rather needs a working crystal ball

@egreg :-)
@DavidCarlisle Probably. But isn't google the first thing you want to hit? Well, not you, the OP.

@Johannes: how about using that penguin image as your avatar? It suits the occasion. :)

@PauloCereda :-)

This penguin is so cute. :)

4:43 PM
@PauloCereda are you hinting to @samcarter that one should have a detective duck?

@mickep yes, definitely well I never! :)
@mickep: poor @samcarter, I believe she opened Pandora's box. :)

@PauloCereda It seems so! (I did not know she was a she, I've always read it as Sam as in Samuel! I must stop that.)

@mickep well, I suspect it's a she because of her avatar and duck representation. :)

@mickep Sam can be short for Samantha. Possibly other female names, too.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen indeed, I just try to get over my own stereotypes...

4:53 PM
Samuel L. Duck
We could have one!

5:14 PM
@mickep Detective duck:
Meet Inspector Canardo. As you can see, he has a drinking problem. But he has a heart of gold.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen How lovely!

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh
There's this Sherlock duck too!
Quackmentary, my dear Watson

Inspector Canardo is a comics series created by the Belgian artist Benoît Sokal. He was named after the French noun canard, which means "duck" or "drake". == History == Sokal created the character Inspector Canardo after graduating from Institut Saint-Luc, at the age of 20. He first drew his comics for the magazine À Suivre but after the comic became popular, they were published as albums by Casterman. == Characters == === Canardo === The eponymous character and the protagonist of the series, Canardo is an anthropomorphic strange duck who has a career as a private investigator. Hi Mr. @Quantumspaghettification!
I like this bloke's name. :)

Hi @PauloCereda nice ducks! Just curious what made you think I am a bloke (I am)?

@Quantumspaghettification I like your nickname! (I'm Italian)

7:08 PM
@Quantumspaghettification Oh I had no initial clues, I just like to use the term bloke as I want to be an Englishduck!

7:23 PM
@PauloCereda fair enough. You seem to know a lot about LaTex. Can I ask you a quick question (feel free not to answer). I am building a github repository github.com/QuantumSpaghettification/QS-TEX aimed at easily combing LaTeX and script. Do you know if something like this has been done before? If not do you think it would (to at least some people) be useful? Thanks.

@Quantumspaghettification "script" = python here?

@Quantumspaghettification Is this a template?

@Quantumspaghettification oh no, I see you are using R,
so is this like knitr ?

7:38 PM
@Quantumspaghettification Oh very nice project! I don't remember a similar approach. :) And I don't know much of LaTeX, people like @DavidCarlisle and @egreg are better (and way older) hits. :)

@DavidCarlisle At the moment it does R and python2.7 in the LANG file. I have made it so that other languages should be easy to add.
i.e. it can do at the moment ... LaTeX ... python ... LaTeX...R... etc.

@Quantumspaghettification Java soon? :)

@PauloCereda no one uses java any more do they? we all use Fortran.

@DavidCarlisle Will you pay me a beer next year if I include a Fortran code in my thesis?

@PauloCereda I would have done, but you just called me old so I'm sulking.

7:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle I meant experienced. :)

@PauloCereda Ye. Adding a new language is really easy (...well if you know how to write a function that outputs to a file - he says, haven't used Java in years :) ).

@Quantumspaghettification Isn't that similar to what pythontex does? (Which despite the name has support for multiple languages by the way.)

@TorbjørnT. I was going to mention pythontex or for that matter just --shell-escape

@TorbjørnT. Oh ok, pythontex similar although I think it has taken a different approach.

9:23 PM
Does anybody know how the thing is called some superheros wear around their eyes?

@samcarter Vigilant duck. :)
@samcarter ooh the mask thingy
@samcarter I think band might be accurate.
This calls for a prison duck!
Oh boy, this package is beyond awesomeness.

@PauloCereda is it clear enough what \duck[band=black] will do?

@samcarter We need help! @JosephWright, @barbarabeeton: is band a nice term?

@PauloCereda now that the football ducks are on ctan, a prison duck is easy :)
@PauloCereda <3

@samcarter ooh
@samcarter <3
@samcarter: the CTAN blokes will be very annoyed by constant tikzducks updates!

9:29 PM
wikipedia's entry for zorro says it's a domino mask

@samcarter ooooh

@PauloCereda -- "band" has other meanings. i'd call it a mask, but i'll think about it. (there's also "masque", which can be an application of facial goo, often green, that females apply to their faces to become "beautiful".)

@DavidCarlisle Nice idea to look there.

gotta run -- my chariot awaits.

9:30 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, a mask, in order to hide Zorro's true identity. Actually, I think it should taper a bit. The part that goes behind the head is just for tying it on, so it doesn't have to be so wide.

@barbarabeeton ooh

@barbarabeeton Be careful the chariot does not become a pumpkin :)

@samcarter or fire. :)

@samcarter -- true, but i'm the one who turns into a pumpkin when i've been awake too long. 'bye now.

Or sweet.
@barbarabeeton Bye, Barbara! o/

9:35 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen @PauloCereda @barbarabeeton @DavidCarlisle Thanks a lot for all your suggestions! I guess I'll use "mask" for now - can change it later if something else comes up (as it might be good to leave "mask" open in case the future brings a Darth Vader mask [@ChristianHupfer])

@samcarter ooh

@PauloCereda Especially if I manage to screw up the submission process like this time - I totally forgot to include the readme file, but they were nice enough to keep the readme from the last version around. CTAN PEOPLE ARE GREAT!

@samcarter They are indeed!
@samcarter: in other news, you've been poked. :)

@PauloCereda Got your mail :)

9:56 PM
@samcarter /sob ... no real Darth Vader Duck yet :-(((((

@ChristianHupfer His own fault - why did he choose such a complicate mask?

10:11 PM
@samcarter The mask was given to him by Darth Sidious (of course, he could change it later on, but who would dump such a gift by the Emperor? ;-)

11:05 PM
@samcarter The bald headed duck with the mask reminds of Gordon Liu and his role in Kill Bill Volume 1, as head of the Crazy 88 ;-)

Is it possible to disable \pgfsyspdfmark while the .aux file is read? That is, is it possible to do it safely? [I'd ask a proper question if I could come up with one.]
I need to do it without changing the .aux. I think. Or maybe not. Could I write something to the .aux, maybe? If that was conditionalised, maybe it could still work.
@samcarter Usually.

11:33 PM
Hello everyone,

For a new style glossary, how to have control explicitly on the columns alignment? For example, how to make the three columns here

{\begin{supertabular}{p{\glsnamewidth}lp{\glsunitwidth}p{\glsdescwidth}}}%
{\end{supertabular}}%

left aligned - centered - left aligned?

Thanks

cfr
11:46 PM
Never mind. I can optimise it away, I think.
@DiaaAbidou Hi.
@DiaaAbidou Maybe you should ask a question with a complete example and stuff?

@cfr Hello, OK I will do

cfr
@DiaaAbidou Just I've never used supertabular, so I really don't have a clue.
