umm
I flagged the word swastika as offensive
but sure
no evidence

hahaha

"I know you really want to comment, because that's what would make sense in this scenario. But for no good reason, we've set it up so that you can only answer, which is the wrong thing to do. Welp, we're going to recommend this answer be deleted, even though you're doing us a service by pointing out that this question is plagiarized. Have a good day!"

Oh, That's Harsh.

@Will That's holy shit in my country

@question_asker I agree, but it's an annoying autoresponse that flagging puts on it. I hate that autocomment.

7:01 PM
wait, I'm not trying to be difficult, but why is the word swastika offensive?

But to be fair, if it's not an answer...

truwe

Wait, what?
reading up

Nazi's sign looks like swastika

To be fair, on the comment thing

7:01 PM
that's why

ONE answer, with ONE vote allows you to comment
It's just meant to prevent bots

@Khale_Kitha yeah to be fair, it's not really an answer. it's just backward to allow answers but not comments and then get mad when people answer instead of commenting

Swastika is a girl's name

@manshu that doesn't answer my question, though

I remember people having a cow in Jade Dynasty, because ...let me find it..

Nazi's sign looks like swastika

obviously swastika is a symbol of the nazis, but nobody is claiming history books are offensive because they mention that nazis exist

Now you are saying what I said 2 weeks ago

Well I can't find it...

But that's because history books serve to educate.

@manshu I didn't disagree with you there, either

7:03 PM
but they complained because on of the abilities had a "reverse swastica" symbol as the effect.
When the symbol was never a Nazi symbol to begin with

yeah...

@Will I still don't get it
@Will Why is the word swastika offensive?

Now I am interested in the origin of Nazi's symbol
Not the word

7:05 PM
The sign is offensive in some regions of this earth

Is this offensive?
Swastika (/ˈswɒstɪkə/ or /swɒsˈtiːkə/) is a small community founded around a mining site in Northern Ontario, Canada in 1908. Today it is within the municipal boundaries of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. Swastika is a junction on the Ontario Northland Railway, where a branch to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec leaves the ONR's main line from North Bay, Ontario to Moosonee. Until 2012, the Northlander passenger railway service between Toronto and Cochrane served the Swastika railway station; however, connecting bus service exists along Highway 66 into...

it's not that the word itself is offensive, but that in the context, it's clearly just there to be obnoxious

"Despite its origins, the swastika has become so widely associated with Nazi Germany that contemporary uses frequently incite controversy."
This ^^ is the issue.

sigh
I guess I just don't have the context

Dildo is an unincorporated place on the island of Newfoundland, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located on the southeastern Dildo Arm of Trinity Bay about 60 kilometres west of St. John's. South Dildo is a neighbouring unincorporated community. The town's unusual name has brought it a certain amount of notoriety in the same vein as Fucking, Austria; Anus, France; Condom, France; Nob End, England; Effin, Ireland; Twatt, Scotland; Intercourse, Pennsylvania; Bald Knob, West Virginia; Wankum, Germany; Mörön, Mongolia; Morón, Cuba; Cocks, Cornwall; Hell, Michigan and Swastika...

7:06 PM
The swastika (also known as the gammadion cross, cross cramponnée, or wanzi) (as a character: 卐 or 卍) is an ancient religious symbol that generally takes the form of an equilateral cross, with its four legs bent at 90 degrees. It is considered to be a sacred and auspicious symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and dates back to before 2nd century B.C. It has been used as a decorative element in various cultures since at least the Neolithic. It is known most widely as an important symbol long used in Indian religions, denoting "auspiciousness." It was adopted as such in pre-World War I-Europe...

But the word/symbol, itself, should only be offensive to someone who does not understand what it is
But now I'm scrolling up to see where this conversation started.

I was in Bali, and went into a temple compound. Swastikas over every door.

Yeah, I can see why it was confusing, Will. Same thing for those who complained in Jade Dynasty.
But maybe it was context, because i don't know what you flagged.

Yeah I guess it is on every door of my home.

Plus what I flagged was a really low quality post regardless
Sorry. It's just, I'm so used to being told what is/isn't offensive... that my response now is to get defensive....

7:09 PM
Brilliant AND boring! (that link)
Yeah, it's understandable.

Man. Dudes.

My eyebrows when up, when I started playing JD, but then someone explained what it meant.

@question_asker yes sir?

I was like: "Oh... I see.. Didn't know that. Okay"

7:10 PM
I do not need to have the swastika explained to me
I'm just puzzled by the specific thing mentioned above

@question_asker and what is that

I don't see anyone trying to explain anything to you, q_a :P

Just like that one answer was deleted because it said Hitler
You guys posted several explanations of what a swastika is

No, we posted responses to manshu's statement

Which question
Y U NOT STOP BLAMING ME?

Now I am interested in the origin of Nazi's symbol

Ohkk...

ah, OK

that didn't mean that swastika is the origin
you guys just assumed that it is the origin

from the way it played out here, it was indistinguishable from explaining it to me :P

but given no proof

7:13 PM
but the point still stands

"It's not all about you!!" hahaha

It's about me

No, it's about @You

I still, to this day, don't understand why that Hitler one was deleted

Because MAGIC !!!

7:14 PM
Because of..
3 hours ago, by humn
Radishes, A helicopter, and a Third word

it was a wrong answer, but just like, I don't know a single person of any race, ethnicity, background, etc., who finds the mere mention of hitler offensive

Remember that the question wasn't deleted because of the mention of Hitler, though - if it's the one I'm remembering - don't change history on that

I find your message offensive just because you named someone who should not be named

Voldemort

:p

7:16 PM
@Khale_Kitha uh, I can't find any evidence to the contrary
somebody who didn't delete it said they were offended because, to them, "very harsh" wasn't a strong enough term for the holocaust

From what I remember (not searching for it, right now) it was closed because people felt that the answerer (invalidly) was discounting how harsh the holocaust was
"people people?" wth, hands..

no one who actually was responsible for deleting it (not closing it) said that
which... I get it but it's nitpicky

I have no idea who VTC it, so can't say

literally, the person who deleted it was like "you fucking dummy, if you can't see why it was deleted I'm sure as shit not going to tell you"
(yes, I'm putting some profanities in their mouth, but it's not outside of the spirit of their response)

Why do you think that person deleted it?
Everything I see shows that it was flagged by numerous people and closed by a bot.

7:19 PM
I can only guess!

Closed by Community

I just don't get how people can get offended by hitler's name...If we are getting offended by his name then we should also get offended by the name of christopher columbus..coz he killed 10000 americans

yeah but that's the bot that "closes" everything

lol, manshu

that's not actually the community
that's just the hand of the person who deleted it
@manshu I 100% agree with you

7:20 PM
That bot does close things that are flagged, by tons of people, though

christopher columbus is awful

If the person you're referring to had deleted it, it'd say they deleted it.

no, the community bot deletes everything

No...

I can't find a counterexample

7:21 PM
No, when someone else deletes something it shows that they deleted it

but I'll take your word for it

Literally, the post right below the one to which you're referring.

every other deleted answer on that question?

Q: The harsh password change

Khale_KithaMy roommate changed my password! The jerk got onto my machine, while I was in the restroom, and changed it. Sigh... As he left the room, he gave me a single slip of paper, that he claimed had a password hint on it. It simply states: 6-sided Very Harsh 28 characters ...Not that I...

7:21 PM
says "community" for me

...except 1
really?
For me it shows...

yeah..community

weird
anyway

Strange that it shows up differently, though

point being, here's what we know:
a small number of people flagged the post. why? no one knows

7:23 PM
Richard has the short of it, in his comment, though:
"Actually, Hitler was very harsh to Jews. Perhaps pydsigner could have used more superlatives to describe Hitler, but the answer should not be deleted for a lack of superlatives. If the answer does not make sense (which it doesn't - for many reasons, including that Adolf is spelled with an f, not a ph), it should be downvoted, not deleted."

then people act like they got offended by that answer

it was deleted, and when the guy asked why (understandably, since it didn't actually espouse any political view whatsoever other than "the holocaust was not a good thing"), he was met with "you should know, you fucking dummy. I refuse to explain it to you" by one of the people who deleted it

...sigh....That's not a fact, but okay

which... doesn't actually explain anything
it's literally the opposite of an explanation
sure it is

It's an exaggeration of a response from a person that you assume deleted it based on no facts that we just disproved.

7:24 PM
"I don't think this needs an explanation as to why it was considered offensive"
That's a dismissive answer
sorry, that's incorrect
it's a dismissive refusal to answer

... "especially considering the only clue it follows from the puzzle is two words"

except that's immediately countered in the comments
also
since when do we delete answers that don't "completely" answer the question?
we usually vote them down

A child asks "What is apple?"..He replies "It's obvious"

That's the entire point. :)

What is?

7:26 PM
[practicing entering]

As Richard said, if people had a problem with the answer, they should have downvoted it - instead they flagged it.
Why? (As you said) we don't know, for sure.
But they did

I agree! I never took issue with Richard's response
in fact, I think it sums up what I think quite nicely

But claiming that some random mod deleted it, and then spit all over the poster, is grossly inaccurate.

that doesn't mean I can't be annoyed at what the actual response is, especially since that response won't ever be reversed

His response could have been better, but it doesn't do what is claimed.

7:27 PM
no
refusing to answer is spitting on the poster

He did answer.

untrue

"Your answer was deleted because it was flagged as offensive by several different users."
Very first line

That's asinine
that's not why it was deleted

Then he proceeds to state that it was offensive for a reason that he found obvious.

7:28 PM
He answered
Is it
>! 41 64 6f 6c 70 68 20 48 69 74 6c 65 72

Which would be
>! Adolph Hitler in hex, because he was very harsh to Jews.

That's like saying "what was I arrested for" and being answered with "a crime. shut up"

Right after you burglarized a store.
Yes.

except... not like that at all?
he didn't burglarize a store

Q: Who is the Community user?

jjnguyI see this Community user on the user page. It also seems to edit posts sometimes. What is it? And why has it downvoted over 1800 times? Related What are “Community Wiki” posts? Return to FAQ Index

Neither was he arrested

7:29 PM
this would be more akin to him walking down the street

> Locks and deletes spam posts

and being arrested
maybe he had committed a crime!
but "you were arrested because you committed a crime" is obviously a disrespectful and un-useful answer.

No, it's more like he was walking down the street, and a mob recognized, invalidly, him as a criminal and tied him up, then he asked a police officer what he'd done wrong and was told "it's obvious."
Sure, the officer was wrong, but that doesn't change anything

especially when—if there actually was a crime—it would be supremely easy to just state.

But it's really more like, "Judge, why am I being sentenced?" "Because a jury of your peers found you guilty."
2

7:30 PM
well,
a mob "recognized" him
There hasn't yet been an explanation of what anybody actually found offensive, after all this time.
Anybody who was actually involved in the deletion, that is.

And there won't be, because the users who flagged it aren't answering.

But others gave their opinion on why they thought it was offensive.
And their opinion, while valid or not, is all you can reference.

one person did.

dun dun dun

7:32 PM
It's not really like the jury thing at all.

3 people did

Because a jury trial would be transparent to more than a shady cabal of people accountable to no one.
I can get three people to vote anything on anything.

Yes, and this isn't a court, so there will be differences in the analogy. I think it fits as close as we can get.
And more than 3 people voted. 3 people simply chose to defend their answer.
Maybe not even the same 3 people.
The point of the entire thing being...

How do you know three people voted?
Only one person gave an answer.

3 people did - read it again.

7:34 PM
so... that's one person.

Your numbering system is odd, to me.

Where are you getting this "three people" thing from?

The -3 score on the answer, presumably.

There's three separate posts in the meta response (and a 4th who considers that the answer wouldn't haev stuck around long)

(catching up, a fresh post to the question, anyone?)

7:36 PM
I'm seeing one (1) deleted post, one (1) meta post asking why it was deleted, one (1) person who could not have voted to delete it saying why they found it offensive (possibly after the fact), and zero (0) people claiming that they both voted to delete it and actually giving an answer

(sorry, found it)

nowhere does anyone say that they both voted to delete it and give an answer, and in fact, exactly one answer is given, by a person who does not have the rep to vote to delete

Not to mention that it takes up to 10 votes to delete an answer from community flags.

No one necessarily voted to delete it. It got flagged as spam/offensive (each such flag producing a downvote) and automatically deleted by the Community user as a result.

nope, only 3

7:37 PM
No, 10

OK, well, that's in direct contradiction of what the mods here said?

and it's 6 for offensive or spam flags
For an autodelete

you only need three people of sufficient rep to vote to delete.

As I mentioned, prior, it was not deleted by anyone - it was deleted by flags.

that's what I was told, and that's what I experienced

7:38 PM
Which means it was 6 people, of any rep

I guess the mods are wrong

If they're saying that, then yes.

also, my experience is wrong too

Then yes

Q: How does deleting work? What can cause a post to be deleted, and what does that actually mean? What are the criteria for deletion?

according to a person who hasn't ever been in that position

7:39 PM
The system is explained, right there, including the autodelete for flags
You're right, I'm only referencing the post used to design the system.
As I've said to you over, and over, but you refuse to listen to. You do not have to be high reputation to flag a post.
You're so caught up on your own argument, you've stopped listening.

I didn't say flag
I said recommend deletion

I'm done.

which, again, is what I was told, by the people who literally run the site
sorry for listening to them?
also it's how it worked when I actually had to do it

I literally enjoyed this fight.

I wasn't fighting

Of course he should
That's what I was waiting for for so long...

still a little interested in
because those 3 mystery stripes look like overlays completely unrelated to the music
they are fully spectral and don't line up with notes

7:50 PM
nice wallpaper..
where did you find it
:p

it's on the ceiling because i fell backwards

@manshu I understand the mods a lot better with some of the information from that post
(i.e., they are young as hell)

@question_asker Note that Kevin gave a loose reason for being a moderator.
And Maybe it's just Emrakul who is young

He's hardly ever around

Yup
I asked emrakul about it
but he didn't reply
I asked about Doorknob too

7:53 PM
Dk is super young too

is there a list of moderators? vvv thank you

It's officially emrakul, doorknob, and Kevin

Lesson to learn is "Next time if someone is moderator on any other site..the don't vote him/her for moderator"
@Khale_Kitha You can come in...It's all right now.

or maybe

:p

7:55 PM
actually no, I won't say that
it might come off as mean to the mods
and I don't actually want to be mean to them

In my opinion, Emrakul is best as we could get. But I am really not sure about Kevin and Doorknob

emrakul is... around
I think we could do with some mods that actually have experience

yeah...and he have completed all his promises

he also deletes things by people he doesn't like
which is... not a great mod trait

Sometimes he does it to me too.
It doesn't mean he hates me.. (or maybe he does)

7:58 PM
I never said he hates anybody

Not liking = Hate (for me)

I'm less concerned about him hating people than I am about him acting differently toward different people for reasons unrelated to quality.
fair enough
