6:00 PM
lol

and I was like "uh, no, my answer is the answer I gave. if that's not good enough, somebody else can get the right answer"

I think I remember seeing that
So it was radiation, then

well, it's some type of radiation
some type that meets all the criteria mentioned in the puzzle

yeah

so, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6:01 PM
gamma?
lol, no idea - I honestly haven't looked into it

I';m not trying to be a dick to them or anything
just... I hate that kind of pickiness

I imagine that's why they asked if they could edit in the incorrect parts
They just didn't word it that way

like when somebody is like "the answer is right, but you only got 5 out of 7 clues"
like, accept it then

For me, it depends on which clues.

nobody just accidentally stumbles on the right answer with 5 / 7 clues

6:02 PM
If they got the 3 obvious (omg, you can't miss it) clues...
but they didn't get the ones that required thought...

you can't be "accidentally right" in that scenario

I want someone to invest in actually figuring out my puzzle. =D

the problem with that is that at that point, you're literally expecting them to guess your thoughts

It takes me time to make it, so don't just guess, based on a couple of clues =D
No, only if the clues are bad, is that the case.

well...

6:03 PM
The POINT of the clues is to narrow the topic.
If 30% of it is right, there's a good chance that it's wrong.

and if the clues are bad...
5 out of 7 isn't 30%

I never said it was.

I'm saying, I've seen many times when people have given an answer that is unquestionably the right answer
and OP won't mark it because they won't address a minority of totally inscrutable clues
or they got answers that match the clues but they're not the answer the OP had in mind
that's not "accidentally stumbling on to the right answer", that's "getting it right but not being able to read minds"

Yeah, that's the problem with bad riddles, though

I agree

6:05 PM
If the riddle can be solved with only 1-2 of the clues, then it may not be a good enough riddle.

but don't punish the answerer for your own mistake
(not you you, general you)

Now of course, 5/7 is a different story
But still..
but mostly agree

yeah, and that's what I'm talking about

I think it's situational
You got all 7 right, but you spelled a word wrong in reason 6

when a majority of clues are answered correctly and it's reasonably clear that the person didn't just brute force it or guess...

6:06 PM
No checkmark for you!!!
:P
Yeah, I guess that's the thing

you can usually tell when somebody "figured it out" and when they just ballparked an answer that might be right

Brute forcing the answer without looking into the clues
That's what I don't want

Though...
Sometimes it's a good way to get the answer, and find the clues from there.
That curl puzzle....

I liked that!

6:07 PM
He mentioned that the answer was listed once, in the puzzle. I search for curl, once I thought it was the answer, and that helped me verify myself. LoL

I had searched for about 7 other things, first, and disqualified them, because of it.

nothing wrong with "working backward"

Yeah

that's like that pangloss question I answered

6:08 PM
But Energy, because Energy

I answered it in a way that pretty much doesn't even count here

I answered it by looking at old edits and doing a search on the site
with literally no clue about how it was actually supposed to be solved

Yeah, the OP in the curl one was really helpful.
He stated who had their clues the closest
So I wrote them all down, and used it as a reference point
Bloody SEVEN second chat delay...

at the risk of sounding like a hugh meyers fanboy
I like the way he gives clues

6:10 PM
Get it right - it's fanboi :P
hahaha

he gives clues that work but don't seem like they actually tell you anything new

Yeah

you almost wouldn't even recognize them as clues until after the puzzle has been solved, if he didn't tell you that they were clues first

Yeah, I try to do the same, but sometimes they're not noticed.

I've seen a number of puzzles here get answered because the OP gets frustrated and gives a really obvious hint.
yeah, you do a good job of clues too

6:11 PM
haha

see: TFC puzzle

Yeah, I'm trying not to do that on the email one
To be fair, on the TFC one. Getting TFC was REALLY hard, by guessing.
It was a bad puzzle, in a way, because of the requirement of the hints.
In my head, it worked fine =D

What was the TFC puzzle?

The spy puzzle
I should make some puzzles whose answers are clues for the email puzzle. =D

Q: It's time to go!

Khale_KithaYou have stolen the object. You have completed the mission. You're ready to get out. There's just one little snag: Your driver was captured and you no longer have an escape route. You sent a communique to TFC Command on your secure device, requesting further orders, and the following strin...

sometimes I'm disappointed that certain answers of mine get voted in a way that is disproportionate to how much I liked the puzzle

6:16 PM
Yeah. even after the fact, I can't see that that's necessarily the answer.
Take from C, I mean.

Yeah - I originally didn't have TFC, but I added it soon after posting, as a vague clue.
But too vague

A: A riddle I made up for my kids a while ago

question_askerI believe you are talking about

that's one of my highest-rated answers, but it's only rated like that because the question made it onto HNQ

hahaha

A: Caesar and the Roman Murders

question_askerWell. Rome again is it. We've been told at the very beginning of the story that Caesar is being asked to investigate the primary victims.

6:21 PM
Hahahah, that reminds me of a puzzle I was seriously considering doing, earlier.

this is one of my lowest, and while I'm not very satisfied with the answer (I was sure I was only partway to the actual answer), it took a long time to get and 1 upvote is pretty shoddy

A picture of a port, a picture of a man, and a picture of a toe.

I quickly discounted it, but it was a good self-laugh.

I literally thought about a picture of natalie portman (maybe from an older movie like Leon?) and a toe
like, a couple of days ago
naturally I was like "no, that's too stupid"

6:22 PM
haha, someone just upvoted it
I will too :P
haha, nice q_a

That was me.

haha thanks

=D
I've seen that happen on a few of the math ones, though

I swear I wasn't posting that here for upvotes

A long, involved, 3 page answer...
With 1 upvote because no one (including me?) cares to read it, or understands it, quickly.

6:24 PM
I just was looking for examples of stuff I had spent time on (with low rep) vs stuff I had solved quickly (with high rep)
like the cowboys and bicycles one from the other day
cute lateral thinking puzzle, but +31 score?
I tend to auto-upvote lengthy math-answers

Yeah, I rarely get many votes, when I answer something

because that person is definitely smarter than me

The one of Z_Dailey's where it involved 4 previous puzzles being solved, and connecting them with the 5th was a whole 4 votes. LoL

Well, it's the same as StackOverflow. Easy to understand questions with clear answers tend to get upvoted more than complex questions with complex answers. You're a victim of TLDR syndrome.

Yep
That's the same problem with the email puzzle, I'm sure.
Pity, too, because I really enjoy that one.

6:26 PM
It doesn't even fully answer the question.

I just find that answer...just.....I....just.........

I upvoted it anyway

hahaha

oh hey, here's one of mine from another SE site

A: What's the difference between "Bug" and "Glitch"?

question_askerHighly non-technical answer: I would say they are effectively interchangeable, though there tends to be a nuance in the way they are used: The word bug is usually used when an intended game state is not achievable, due to an unforeseen issue in the game's code. i.e., you are unable to complete ...

people got so mad about that one

This one of mine is due to the low population of the site, but making this answer was a pain in the butt, hehe.

A: What are the yellow bars on map locations in The Division?

Khale_KithaIt appears to be markers to that show up opposite the POI from the center of your screen (at least on the PC version.) I took a short video of it, here, that you can see. Watch as I move the map around, the dots move around, so that they are always on the opposite side of the POI from the cen...

6:30 PM
I literally just kind of tossed that answer off after thinking about it for 0.12 seconds

I really like that answer, q_a
Sad that I can't up-vote it due to idiot commenters.

the bug/glitch one?
like

yeah
I thought that was a great answer

even I will admit that I was a) just speaking from my own experience, and not from a technical background and b) not taking much time to think it through
I feel like, on any other QA site, people would be like "oh, yes, this is the answer"

Nevertheless, it was completely accurate, and answered the question in a fashion that would help someone, curious.

6:32 PM
even though it was kind of tossed-off
but on SE sites, people absolutely poop their pants over anything less than an amazing answer

hah

s/amazing/technical and detailed/
I kept laughing that weekend because I'd get a notification that someone else was arguing with someone else in the comments on my answer

lol

send us the link

Makes a comment that gets starred

6:33 PM
it sparked not one but TWO meta questions

hah
=D

ahh...you were talking about that...
i saw that answer month ago.

literally 100% of my rep on that site is from that answer
and several badges (the ones that don't have to do with voting/editing, at least)

@question_asker have fun

6:36 PM
@manshu thanks, I will
that @manshu sure is something, isn't he
really like that @manshu dude

@Will who is that actress?

Sarah Michelle Gellar

6:40 PM
star of everyone's favorite piece of sci-fi/fantasy media,
Southland Tales

hahahha..
nice joke

I actually do unironically love Southland Tales

Sure you do..but do everyone love it?

why would you ever want to know anyone's opinion other than mine?
oh lol I didn't see that you actually flagged that "Energy" answer
@Khale_Kitha (I assume it was you)

wait wait wait...do you mean that I don't care about your opinion or do you mean that I care only about your opinion? I am really confused O_o
former or latter

6:46 PM
@manshu I was being silly; I was suggesting that you should only listen to my opinion (because it's so good and important)

Look, I just found Barack Obama.

where?

There..just above my this message

are you implying that I'm barack obama

mmm..yeah..

6:48 PM
wow
on the one hand, that would be cool, because then I'd be very rich

I want to hear that "My dear fellow Americans..."
Can you do that?
for me?
please

on the other hand, it would mean I am responsible for the deaths of many young people and the incarceration of many americans

There must be some reasons why he did this..

if I had to guess? probably because power is intoxicating

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

6:52 PM
HOLY CRAP
I'm suddenly very sad that I didn't get that "out of this world" puzzle

send the link (as always)

@question_asker Yes

Q: A biography that's out of this world

hexominoWho or what was I? Initially, woeful interviews and a bad video mix-up gave me my name. Then, I was a terrible druggy sat with zits and known for my confusing mantras. Following that, I hunted the kiwi erratically from one stop to the next. After hitting bottom and contemplating my eulogy,...

@manshu now you've got me singing Newsies...

@Will send the link

6:54 PM
Carpe Diem Will.

lol..this isn't available in my country

sucks

I wish you could see who flagged/VTCed something
you can only see who voted on it after that, like "keep open" or whatever (unless there's something I'm missing)

I think that's right

@Khale_Kitha re: that question from earlier - that's an absolutely awful comment in response to that answer
"once you have sufficient reputation, you can comment" well how does that help that person now, when they don't have reputation?

yeah
