4:00 PM
So I wrote a program, to type in, later, that was an ASCII fireworks screensaver.

The first computer I owned was a c64. I had to buy that with my own money, as my parents didn't see any need for a computer in the house.

Typed it in, when I got to class, and it worked, without changes. LoL

Yeah, I never used a commodore, but a neighbor had one

I remember doing stuff like that with QBasic

4:00 PM
Will, did you say you used Logo? (are you here?)

Then I'd buy Compute! magazine, where I could type in 4 pages of code to get a game.

yeeahhhh

hehe

I wanna play Nethack again, now...
(We were talking about it, in the office, yesterday, too. LoL)

4:01 PM
I remember doing stuff like that in Applesoft BASIC.

do any of you remember doing my qbasic trick above?
(chris is a little older than us, so he was probably onto something more complicated by then)

OUT &H64, &HFE, q_a?

are those memory locations?

yeah, I was self-taught, so things like that never came by me
It would have forced a reboot, humn

4:02 PM
before windows 95, at least, it would reboot the computer
yeah

handy

after windows 95 (unless you only booted to DOS), it would just exit back to windows

The funny thing about Windows 95 is that it wasn't an OS.
The screen that declared: "It is now safe to shut down your computer" was an image on top of the DOS window that it had originally launched from.
Press ESC and you were back at DOS.

you like doing that, don't you
calling things not the things that everybody accepts them as
you're not wrong about that image

When they are not the things that everybody accepts them as - yes, lol
I used to like being silly with my DOS prompt, too
making it into thingsl ike TX flag or the such

4:04 PM
yeah

The first time I found out that Linux had moved visual was when I put Fedora on my PS3.
I was like wth is this junk?
It was XWindows, on crack
and worked awfully, too
No, I didn't put a hat on my playstation, @humn

ooooooooooooooh

I gave up on Linux a long time ago. Too much effort just to get it to work with my hardware.

I honestly haven't had reason to try in a long time

a friend of mine work(s? ed?) at redhat

4:07 PM
I have no idea how redhat looks now, but...

And you'd try to compile something and run into all sorts of lib version errors.

1. I preferred linux in the text UI, for sure
2. It was really awful when I tried it
From what I understand, Ubuntu is the go-to, now, rather than Fedora or anything else

Original program required CoolLib3.0.2.1.c but I had CoolLib3.1.3.1.c and it wouldn't compile.

So I had to go through and symlink under the old name.

4:08 PM
There's a reason it's called DLL Hell, Chris =D

maybe i'm not abusing cygwin enough, seems to work, haven't tried anything else, what am i missing? probably too open-ended question, never mind

Next Windows will include an ubuntu bash shell I heard.

I'm told it was an April Fool's joke, by someone in here, but I haven't looked into it, one way or the other.
It'd be odd to pull off, though
I was honestly a little surprised to not have any comments on my "Curl" answer.
I guess I just provided enough detail, but I expected a comment, at least, on somehting that I missed.

expecting one more step at the top of the stairs?

The OP was just responding to all of the others, so it surprised me a bit. Oh well, of course, but I thought it odd.
(Not that I haven't checkmarked a correct answer, without a comment, before)

4:16 PM
(looking again, like i said i liked the answer so much i didn't even notice who it was)

@question_asker Interesting comment from John Carmack (formerly id Software) regarding VR tech. twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/721009172465094656
(Just happened to pop up in my feed, just now)

(true point about stillness) looks like your answer was as good as complete before any edits, K_K

Yeah, I had just meant to make those changes, before I posted it
(I wrote it in notepad)
Puzzle: What's similar between Radishes, A Helicopter, and Chorale?

just make that up? POST IT!

They all have the letter H

4:22 PM
@humn ....maybe?
hahaha
It has as much of an answer as Chris just gave

Chris, you have to wait 10 minutes.... error

It was random and arbitrary :P
I just thought of a new term for that type of puzzle
It's a RAT puzzle.
Random, Arbitrary, and Terrible.

Radishes, A helicopter, and a Third word
2

ROFL
I really want to make a new puzzle, though
...a legitimate one.

You;ve got to post that one too K_K: What do these words have in common?: Random, Arbitrary, Terrible.... they do all have an R

4:25 PM
:P

What we need is a Meta puzzle. Something that sends them around the various stacks looking for info.

I've wanted to do that, actually Chris

I have q_a on one but google didn't find it

someone asked about doing it, on Meta, recently, and was shot down
An internet scavenger hunt, of sorts.

Yeah. exactly.

4:26 PM
what's up everybody

Anyone know how to put clickable URLs into mathjax? i was getting false leads everywhere

"put urls into?"
hi, q_a

matclickable URLshjax

Works for me.

@Khale_Kitha I like that first question back to carmack, about tuning colors

4:27 PM
nailed it, Will!

I thought you might, q_a

something special about colors to you, q_a?

he may be scrolled up

just that i don't see all the same ones most people do

or not =D

4:29 PM
I'm not even all that colorblind, I just have mild red/green colorblindness

Meh, those colors don't matter.
Unless the red is part of purple =D

someone i know found out something lke that decades into their life,, anyway thanks for answering a personal question
i'm putting together a survey of how things look on different visitors' screens

Hmm...

asking "what does this look like?" because i'm so into formatting
but it could be a problem subject to ask people for screenshots because they might contain more than they should
but if you're up for it, care to put up a portion of your screen here? i'll start
(nobody else has to, of course)

OK, @humn, you beginning that part with "anyway" made me finally look up "anyway heres wonderwall"

4:37 PM
curious to know why and what you found, q_a (editing a screenshot at the moment)

Wonderwall's a nice song

hah!
And as for Wonderwall...
I love the song that merges Wonderwall with boulevard of broken dreams
I changed my profile picture to one that's more appropriate for me :)

look the same over there?

Takes a while for chat cache to update
And yes

thanks! little surprised too

4:41 PM
Aside from which stars are orange, of course.

makes sense

listens to that song

that's a snip of my browser window

screenshot inception
screenception?

I hate that movie.

4:43 PM
(listening also, but the visuals are more interesting here)

I've never seen it, Will

thanks, q_a! i'm also looking for differences in spacing and now can calibrate

Honestly, Memento is the only Nolan film I really care for.

I was vaguely aggravated by the fact that "inception" had supplanted "recursion" as the word defining ... recursion

Same

4:44 PM
I keep meaning to see nolan's remake of insomnia

Yeah, I was considering, a moment ago, what the "Hall of Mirrors" image effect would have been called, had that movie existed, long ago

or, well, not even "inception", but "-ception" as an ending

screencursion!

That's better

Now it sounds like an incursion of aliens with screens for faces :/
TELETUBBIES!! RUN!!

4:45 PM
I think I like nolan movies except for batman

Hmm

OK I haven't seen any nolan movies more recent than the last batman one

When I was watching Interstellar I was paying more attention to the soundtrack than to the dialogue.

I think I'm giong to consider making a puzzle where the clues lead to each other...

i.e., haven't seen interstellar

4:46 PM
chain puzzle? I'm not even sure what to call it
Yay, my new icon showed up
Is there a term for that, already?

self-referential?
dunno

A clue, whose answer leads to the next clue, whose answer leads to the next clue

oh, ok
yeah dunno

Haha, you gave me an amusing addendum for the idea, though
Circularly linked list of clues.

Gah, ring buffers.

4:49 PM
lol

(the question marks in the new iK_Kon are working great with the background)

how so?
Also, nice portmanteau
I'm sure the rest of you already know this, but I found something new, accidentally, yesterday.

^^^^^ do go on , i heard that you found nothing, on purpose

If you go into a puzzle, and - on the right side oft he page - click on the word to right of 'active' (usually 'today'), it will go to the most recent activity that has occurred.
I have trouble finding changes, sometimes, myself.

you dog! i've tried clicking on that for just that reason and it never worked before... works every time now... maybe i was right clicking

4:54 PM
hehe

holy freakin moly!!!
what a good trick, thanks kk

@Khale_Kitha the shade of the ?s are very close to the left margin background here and look like lakes or a delta region

Time to work for a bit - Fairy Tail soundtrack on, on amazon music - active music makes it easier to work , for me, sometimes =D
Huh - I don't see a left margin

left margin where our names and mug shots are

4:56 PM
It matches the border of my browser, but that's because it's the same color as I have set for my Windows color =D
Sorry, humn - I still don't know what you're referring to

on this page? the background color definitely matches between q_a's and my screenshots
right, not as rich as your question marks, but at this scale it doesn't have to be

Yeah, it's a greyish
Ah, you're referring to the anti-color in the image?
It's a bit darker, but I see what you mean
Honestly, I used a full color replace for the green with the purple and that was the incidental color that the question marks changed to, from black

right,,, not just some ?s, described it wrong

worked out well!

5:00 PM
I thought so =D
I was going to do a select color replace, but...
The original image was jpg and the "person" had been anti-aliased, so it would have looked REALLY bad around the edges.

ho, familiar problem
i'm still puzzled by color in general anyway, seems like almost every works great, just some works more great

I wish I could understand the music that I am listening to =D
It's a balancing act, imo

what are you listening to?

that mashup?

Soundtrack for Fairy Tail
one of the only anime tracks on Amazon's prime collection

5:02 PM
an anime came up when I googled, is that what you mean?

wtf!!

sorry, lol....
Remember what game I said, earlier, that I really wanted to play?
This just flew by, on my twitter...
Oh. Yes, in answer to your question.

oh wow, haha

@ChrisCudmore Haha, look at my link =D

5:04 PM
I had no idea that nethack was even remotely "live" anymore

The new graphics look just like the old Castle of the Winds game
(From 25+ years ago)

(I'm just using "live" as a shorthand for "people are making new versions of it, eventually" and now I've ruined my shorthand by taking the time to explain it)

Haha

Sweet.

It's so funny, though - my boss and I were talking, yesterday morning, about this game.
It's so funny [awesome] when Japanese music switches to English, every few words =D

5:07 PM
I enjoy that, having little bits of english sprinkled into an otherwise non-english song

Yeah
It reminds me of my friend, that I mentioned a while back, whose family always switched between Persian, Armenian, and English, every few words, when talking =D

[message-writing time]

sometimes I think that the questions on the workplace SE are written by space aliens

Q: Is it ethical to swap my chair with one in a conference room?

DubsI work at a small-ish company with less than 50 people. We have one conference room/board room that is used around 30-40% of the time. Now as a startup we are very cash-strapped and as a result our chairs have never been replaced. We buy new ones when we need to but I don't think we've ever thro...

Hahahahaha
I did that, when I started here.

5:12 PM
I mean

My boss said: "You didn't tell me that."

admittedly that particular question has a tiny bit more meat to it than the title implies

I couldn't sit in the chair I was given.
It was extremely painful, h eh

but gosh, I would not even think twice about swapping my bad chair for a superior chair that no one is using

"Completely off the point, but if your management is too stupid to realize that having programmers work on unusably slow machines (and on bad chairs) is extremely bad business, then they are incompetent. "

5:13 PM
I mean, I might expect some very minor, completely forgettable blowback

Can I upvote this, a few hundred times?

but I would never think "this might be unethical"
oh my god seriously

"

If I walked into a programming job and they sat me down in front of a five year old computer, I'd start sending out my resume again as soon as I got off work."
Last one (by the same person): "

Programmers are expensive and hard to find. Refusing to give them the tools they need to be as productive as possible is incredibly short-sighted. Adding an extra minute to the build/test/debug cycle can take hours out of someone's week. That doesn't mean all programmers need a new computer every six months, but five years is pretty darn old for any software development work besides testing how an application performs on an older machine. "
On the contrary to that, though
I find it fascinating the game companies who develop their game on i7 5Ghz machines with SLI Titan X video cards and don't understand why the game doesn't run on their customer's PC's.

"If anyone is reading this while specing out a new office - this line of reasoning, while applicable, is a massive false economy. Make your staff comfortable and they will have one less reason to leave as soon as the clock strikes 1700."

5:16 PM
We work on a 3 year replacement for all computers.

I straight up do not understand releasing games that Don't Work Yet

Yeah, my old company did that, as well, Chris. This one is more financially strapped.

I agree with that comment too, KK

I'm working on the same machine that I used when I started at my previous company 4 years ago.
It does the job I need, though.

I mean, a lot of people are making assumptions about that person's office
saying that the conference room is used for "visitors"
I work in a much bigger company than that person, granted, but we pretty much never use our conference rooms for anything other than (100% internal) meetings
so my line of thought is: fuck the people who only have to sit in those chairs for like 1-2 hours, max. give the good chairs to the people who have to sit in them all day.

5:18 PM
That person's company only apparently had 1 conference room - but still

I will admit to being turned off from a company when their meeting room chairs were all mismatched and trashy..
But I didn't let it affect my opinion of the job
Because it was unrelated.

yeah
at the end of the day, your company is benefiting from your labor

That being said, I'm not going to sit in a meeting room chair, reminiscent of the Adam Sandler's POS Car seat. :P

the least they can do is make you as comfortable as possible while you're doing it
haha

5:20 PM
:P
One of the guys on that post...
For a moment, I thought he had 122k gold badges =D

yeah
Still he had like 23 or so

ohhh yeah that's definitely what it looks like, at first glance
god
I hope SE is paying that guy

clue on the music puzzle
The song is shorter than it should be and OP has implied that it's a clue

part of the reason I never participate in any of the musical/visual steganography puzzles is because, when I get home, where I actually have tools to do stuff like that, I want to do anything but what I spent most of my day doing

5:27 PM
hehe

Could those vertical lines be where a note or two were edited out?

Depending on the cut method, sure, if someone wasn't careful
There was something about silence at the start, though...
Dropbox downloads are REALLY bloody slow, though
So this tiny 50Mb file is taking 3 minutes to re-download
It's actually annoying to edit a sound file so that it loops, properly, from experience, without a pop
So it could be a similar issue
The tiny silence, at the start. Maybe the Galactic Empire is invading?
This silence, btw, is about a half second
I don't have a copy of the "original" though

@Khale_Kitha I think I've played that video game!

haha

5:46 PM
Hahahah, that's cute: "What is artificial light made of?"
(I'll answer it when I get back)
"Fauxtons"

haha

I'm clapping

lol

[quoting first line]
>! [answer]
[quoting second line]
>! [answer]
[quoting third line]
>! yep, it's [answer]
[quoting fourth line]
>! you guessed, it's [answer]!

5:56 PM
Totally, not an answer
Okay, I can't vote as that - low quality, then.

lol somebody did the world a favor and got rid of the argument in the comments on the question there
because there was a whole thing about how apparently my answer was kinda-sorta right but not specific enough for the OP

I'm almost certain the answer is "radiation'
but the Op hasn't made any comments

well
that was my guess
but apparently it's something more specific than that
but here's the thing: I did my research, and no one type of radiation met all the clues

Maybe
OP has NEVER responded to that, in 1.5 months

so I just used the blanket term, hoping that, given that I was specifying each type in the clues, it would be counted
well, like I said
they were involved in an argument of sorts with multiple people in the comments
but somebody deleted the comments

5:59 PM
ah

at one point, OP was like "do you want me to edit the right answer into your answer?"
