Hmm, I thought that voice sounded familar
Adam Baldwin (Jayne from Firefly)

lemmeh guess, is there a third person view mode in Deus Ex?
yup
I'll upvote it for now, although I just found that image on Reddit.

What a great answer.

@Manaಠдಠ I will happily delete it if I am proven wrong.

@LessPopMoreFizz heh :)

3:09 AM
(And then never recalc my rep ever again.)
Looking at the starred list... did anybody else do a double take at 'THC digest'?
I thought @Thomas was suggesting we read some sort of marijuana enthusiast periodical for a second.

pfffffft

Not that there is anything wrong with marijuana enthusiast periodicals. High Times is a fine publication with a long and storied history.

what's rep recal clink?

Yeah, we realized a while back that in acronym form it was a bit misleading. :P

meh, no change

3:13 AM
@NickT I'm afraid to dig it up. The last time I recalculated my rep I lost 220 pounds.
Rep pounds, but pounds nevertheless.

Thoughs on removing the 'From Consoles' from that DX 3P question?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Why bother?

There is 3rd person in deus ex tho, when you enter cover

@JohnGore Because the answer doesn't vary across platforms, it's a 'Popular Question' from the standpoint of search engine juice (or it's going to be, I can guarantee it.), and thus it behooves us to be definitive.
Since the answer doesn't actually matter re: consoles, we're better off broadening the scope of the question to improve it's google juice I suspect.

3:17 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Be... bewhat?

behoove (third-person singular simple present behooves, present participle behooving, simple past and past participle behooved)
(US) To suit; to befit.
(US) To be necessary.
(US) To be in one's best interest.  [quotations ▼]
Aww, Wikitionary doesn't one box. :(

@LessPop_MoreFizz It might if you didn't have the reply in there.

@JohnGore oneboxes ignore line replies.

Lamers.

Oh wow, they didn't use to do that.

Box (plural boxes) describes a variety of containers and receptacles for permanent use as storage, or for temporary use often for transporting contents. The word derives from the Greek πύξος (puxos), "box, boxwood". Boxes may be made of durable material such as wood or metal, or of corrugated fiberboard, paperboard, or other non-durable materials. The size may vary from very small (e.g., a matchbox) to the size of a large appliance. A corrugated box is a very common shipping container. When no specific shape is described, a box of rectangular cross-section with all sides flat may be e...

Q: Why were the N64 analog sticks so inferior to those that came after?

75th TromboneThe Nintendo 64 controller's Control Stick seems to have paved the way for the analog sticks adopted by all major game consoles ever since. You can tell, because it really rather sucked compared to the others. It wore out quickly, acquiring a large unresponsive "dead zone" where it could wiggle ...

So, anyways, should I edit that question y'think?

Which?

3:23 AM
@Lazers Erm, didn't the PlayStation get released a few years prior to the N64?

The Deus Ex third person question.
@TimStone Yes, but the Dual Shock came after iirc.

@Lazers Off-topic?
borderline EE.SE

The original PS1 controller was a 4 directional+4 buttons, no joysticks.

@NickT Hardly.

Ah, right, I had forgotten about that.

3:25 AM
MUPPETS

@JohnGore That question doesn't relate to gaming per-se, and is not even a gaming question
it's an electronics design question
while it may be close, I don't see how you could just dismiss it without a second thought

@NickT In general, we've been pretty tolerant of 'on topic trivia'.

Yeah, it seems that the N64 release predated the DualShock release by at least a year.

For better or worse, those sorts of questions are, at least de facto, on topic.
We need a Muppets.SE

@LessPop_MoreFizz +1

3:29 AM
<--- Dr. Teeth is the Best Muppet. Just FYI.

idk, IMO the Nintendo 64 one's actually pretty interesting.

I agree.

@AnnaLear If you're fast, you can edit that comment to link the question!

and I feel like more people on this site would take interest in the question. But would it be better suited for an electronics site...? Maybe.

@Manaಠдಠ I don't think so. Nintendo and Gaming are pretty synonymous.

3:40 AM
Well, I'm more just thinking in terms of whether or not the people on this site would be the right sort to give a strong answer, compared to the hardware crowd on the electronics site.

Somebody convince me that it is a bad idea to put on a pot of coffee so I can play New Vegas all night

@LessPop_MoreFizz That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

I'd like to, but I'd do it, so.

I need to hit the hay but I'm dumb

Q: Bukkit DefaultCommands Permissions

NickAldwinI'm starting up a new Minecraft server. I was advised to use Bukkit and to use the DefaultCommands plugin to add functionality. However, upon installation of DefaultCommands, nobody but ops could pick up items...but they had every other permission (set the time, give people items, etc.). This ...

3:42 AM
I do need to work at 8 AM though.

Details, details.

> The statistics with respect to askers of ITG sticking around is a direct response to one argument in favor of ITG: Specifically, that we should look the other way w/r/t the generally low quality and sketchy subject matter of these questions because it brings in a disproportionate number of new users. Essentially, the "Getting to Know You" argument that often pops up with regards to 'fun' question categories. (n.b., I do not think ITG is in any way fun. In fact, I find it quite miserable.)
Too harsh?

Although wait, I remember your job involving needing you to perhaps be slightly more alert than someone sitting in a cubicle all day, so maybe I shouldn't encourage that, heh.

@TimStone Depends how good I am at conning my coworker into letting me play navigator all day tomorrow.

Ah ha.

3:48 AM
How many new users from ITG are retained vs. new users in general?

@NickT Roughly 30% fewer.
(61% vs. 46%)

@LessPop_MoreFizz Seems fine to me.

Essentially, in other words, ITG is actually worse at bringing in new users that stick around, than other question types.

what's the absolute value for those?
how many new users show up (per arbitrary unit time), how many of those stay, then both figures for ITG-first users?

3:51 AM
@NickT Ask @tzenes, he crunched the data

tacked it onto my query

Q: ’80s children's computer game; pixelated bugs swarmed together to form a letter or word

75th TromboneWhen I was in kindergarten in 1986/87, we had a small computer lab at my elementary school. I remember playing a game on those computers — I don't know what kind they were, sorry — where pixelated "bugs" would start scattered all over the screen, then slowly move together to form a letter or a sh...

Matthew ReadPoints You Raise Half the time they seem ridiculously vague Ridiculously vague questions should always be closed if they can't be clarified. I know Gaming users aren't used to as many vague questions as are users of other sites, but rest assured that this problem is not endemic to ITG. Th...

Agreed with @StrixVaria on this one.

Fallout Modders are the worst human beings on the planet.
Just FYI.

user20683
how so? That doesn't look bad at all

@WorldEngineer You haven't gotten to the Third Reich part of it yet, have you?

4:38 AM
@Manaಠдಠ I lol'd.
I <3 my pickaxe.

user20683
I may be entirely too tired but I'm not sure I get it outside the comments below the thing and the fact that the player model is a WWII German soldier.

@WorldEngineer Also the companions. Also, the guy has lots of other nazi mods scattered around.

Anyways, heading to bed. I'll think about ITG some more in the morning.

Fallout modders are the scum of the earth.
'nuff said.

@Manaಠдಠ g'night

4:44 AM
@Manaಠдಠ Peace bro.

user20683
Red Orchestra featured playable Germans and isn't considered scum though it's not Fallout

Additional evidence:
Yes. Really.

user20683
I guess it's the single player equivalent of Counter Strike then

@WorldEngineer It's far far worse.

user20683
See, I've never played Fallout so I can't really judge the merits of the underlying game

4:49 AM
@WorldEngineer Oh, the underlying game is fantastic.
It's specifically the mod community that's awful.

user20683
how'd that happen exactly?

user20683
attracts Mad Max wannabes?

(It's largely the same mod community that modded the shit out of Oblivion and before that Morrowind. With most of the same issues. That is to say, they rip textures and meshes wholesale out of other games, do halfassed ports of them, oh, and roughly 40% of all download traffic on the major mod sites is full of psychotic perverts who want nudechildeanimeslavemods)

user20683
I was about to say, the reaction to that guy seemed consistent with Oblivion mods

@WorldEngineer Nah, the Mad Max wannabes are prt cool dudes who make some prt cool stuff. (well, aside from the peculiar fascination that the fallout fanbase/NMA crowd has had since the beginning with killable children.) It's specifically the mod community that showed up when Fallout 3 came out, who largely moved over from Oblivion modding, that are absolutely deplorable.

user20683
4:52 AM
so apparently Bethesda attracts legions of horrible "people"

@WorldEngineer Yep./
Another 'top mod' on the Nexus is 'Slof's Boners'. It does what it says on the tin.

user20683
I seriously don't understand these kinds of people

user20683
kiddie molesters/rapists in general should be gelded, Turkish style

Speaking of which, I am off to actually play fallout, rather than depress myself browsing the mod sites.

Even though I kind of suck at it.

Q: How do I rescue Josie Thorpe?

Q: Is there a way to skip the opening logos in Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

ArtlessI'm really enjoying the newest Deus Ex, but I'm not enjoying sitting through the logos of the assorted developers and publishers each time the game loads. I remember modifying a file (maybe a .ini) in Borderlands to skip its opening logos so it wasn't so tedious, but I can't remember how this was...

@NickT If you look over my original research you'll see I included the sitewide rate as well as a number of other tags...
For game-rec: 342 showed up 157 stayed. Site wide, 13651 showed up and 8327 stayed
here I defined "showed up" as asking a question or answering one
and "staying" as having >2 upvotes

tzenesSo, when I approach the problem of whether or not a question is appropriate for GSE I have to remind myself what the goal of GSE is. Q: What is the source of the term Use Map Settings?

RCIXI heard the term "UMS" used to refer to a starcraft II custom map, and after looking it up it seems to refer to "Use Map Settings". What is the origin and history of this term?

oh valve, the unlimited use noisemaker was perhaps a bad idea

1 hour later…
8:57 AM
Happy 15th birthday Team Fortress!
Valve should allow everyone to use that thing on their birthday.

Which thing?

Noisemaker.

You mean some aren't allowed to use it?

Not starting tomorrow, no.
I remember when birthday mode was automatically enabled if anyone on the server was playing on his birthday.

well, you can use it infinitely many times
...today
and in 366 days
and in 365 days since then
etc.

9:04 AM
True, but still.

Hrm, I don't think I'll promote the Medic strange crate to the row of crates I'd like to open eventually
I'd only like one item from that, and the chances are too low.

9:20 AM
Am I now the only one who still thinks it's silly to buy keys?

There's only been one crate I really did wanted to open. I opened it and got what I wanted.
This row of crates is for keys I might eventually get my hands on

You paid €1,25 for a chance to win a virtual item that you wanted.

(it's a strange soldier crate, a strange spy crate and a strange pyro crate)

Well, no, you paid €5.

@ArdaXi Actually it was a guarantee: while I really only wanted a few, I'd have been happy no matter the outcome.

9:22 AM
Assuming you bought that key.

Perhaps not as happy with a strange shotgun, but...

I could probably trade a strange something for my Tough Guy's Toque
Problem is, I suck at trading.

I got somebody who was interested in swapping my strange wrench for a strange jag but he never did answer to my requests for trading
Oh, and I also got a relatively crappy hat from that key.

Q: Getting Max Payne sounds to work on Windows 7

OakTrying to run Max Payne (the original game from 2001) on Windows 7 64-bit, there is a serious problem with the game sounds - no music, many effects missing, stuttering, slowdowns etc. Looking online I was able to find this guide for fixing it on Windows Vista (which probably applies to 7 as well...

And uploaded it somewhere
But it now expired

Oh hai ther!

Oak
9:31 AM
Anyone knows of a site that can offer more... permanent hosting, for game-related files?
Though maybe I can actually ask that in game-dev

Hm I used this fix once I think

@Oak dropbox?
So long as you don't get crazy traffic you should be fine

Oak
@badp haven't thought of that... you mean open a fictive dropbox account to just host one file?

@Oak how about using your own?

Oak
@badp don't have. Well I do have because I was forced to, but I plan on closing it

9:35 AM
@Oak Any reason why?

Oak
Since I'm a Syncplicity user, no use in two different services

It's my no-effort backup solution for stuff that really matters. Been effective so far
Oh, I see
Hm, well, I'm not aware of many other free file sharing services that don't suck
Perhaps I can host it on my own Dropbox account, @Oak?

Files don't expire.
Ran by a friend of mine.

Oh, right, that service.

Nothing is permanent of course.

Oak
9:39 AM
No, nothing is permanent, I just want something without an expiration policy
So at least I know that as long as the site is alive and they don't change their policy, it can stay there

Well, there you go.

Oak
@ArdaXi it looks nice, any catch?

10 GB per file.
@Oak Nope.

Heh. I just finished a round of TF2, so we lost.
Some spy tried to kill me, stepped on the teleporter towards me and gets teleported away. I live.

@ArdaXi Argh!! I hate those things!!

So you do appear to have very few crates @ArdaXi

WHY!! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!

10:11 AM
@badp Gee, really.

Do you delete them or trade 'em away?

I have like 80% of my playtime in the times when there were no item drops.
@badp Neither.

Oh, I see
I have like 33 crates now

If you see anything you like in my backpack give me a shout.
Most of it I don't use anyway.
Except for crafting perhaps.
What happens in my case is, I get bored of the game, then some new weapons come out, I craft them, then I play and gain enough weapons to craft new weapons.
Hmm, I could craft the Original, but it's not really a different weapon.
I could craft a Machina but I don't want to give up my Bison.

Yeah, I'm not particularly interested in any of the Deus Ex update items

10:28 AM
I'm really only interested in the Machina.
TIL the Engineer's hard-hat is team-coloured.

10:41 AM
Why is the Machina interesting?
The Quake 3 railgun is penetrating, and it rarely matters
Also I'm disappointed many of the new items are coming without relevant achievements
"Kill two enemies with the same penetrating bullet."
"Destroy 20 projectiles with your force field."
"Disable 5 buildings."
"Destroy a disabled building."

@badp Force field?

That whatever thing it is the short circuit makes

I see.
@badp It's a buffed sniper rifle.

I love the demonstration video for the short circuit
