9:00 PM
@Mana No, scroll down.
> *Not actually a real device or price. See dreams for details.

oh my god, that site is wickedly good.
I want to post it in my work's chatroom but I don't want to come off like a moron

@Yuki I will at some point. When is it coming out?

@Mana Do it! Invoke the moron!
I believe in you.

oh I'm always invoking the moron

Why stop now?

9:02 PM
@Mana It's awkward how real it feels.
Like ... I could totally picture them doing it.

I hate all the people ranting about the 2DS, they're all like "I already have a 3DS why would..." and I'm like shut up! It's not for you!

@Wipqozn I'm not sure if there's a release date.
I'd have to look it up.
Are you going to get one of the console ports or the PC version, @Wipqozn?
@Fluttershy is going to get the PC version, apparently, so that's probably what I'm going to do as well.

@Yuki PS3
I'm a little worried.

@Wipqozn Well, hopefully they'll have PS3/PC cross-platform functionality like they did for Portal 2...

9:06 PM
@Wipqozn Very nice.

The creator of the series isn't working on it I believe, and the new head developer has said something about making it easier.

@RonanForman Except it would be for me if it were clamshell.

@RonanForman Yeah I know what you mean.

I'm worried he's going to turn it into Baby's First RPG

If you don't want one... just don't buy one?

9:06 PM
@Wipqozn That "making it easier" was a mistranslation.

@RonanForman I just really like the character of Francis
> I don't really blame Nintendo, I mean I saw the comments and some of them were rage filled with unnecessary amounts of caps and curse words. No reason to freak out over this; the 2DS fits a certain demographic(kids and/or people that don't care about the 3D and find the $130 most appealing). The 3DS and 3DS XL still exist, if you don't like the 2DS take a chill pill and move on.

@GnomeSlice People can complain about things being stupid without buying them.

@badp Is ANTI-TERRORISTI plural?

9:07 PM
@Wipqozn If it doesn't affect you, why complain?
Don't buy one and you won't have to worry about it.
Don't poop on it for everyone else too.

I would gladly have bought a 3DS minus the 3D. I never use it anyway.

@GnomeSlice Because complaining is fun.

(I'm pulling translation phrases from CS:GO's files)

I'm fine with people complaining about things, but don't make up reasons so you can.

@OrigamiRobot I'd still stick with the 3DS for portability, just turn the 3D slider down.

9:08 PM
@GnomeSlice If someone didn't buy a 2DS just because the internet at large doesn't like it then they're dumb.

@RonanForman I agree with this a lot.

@GnomeSlice THAT'S WHY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE 2DS

@Wipqozn Your average soccermom is probably going to look at amazon reviews and stuff when she goes to buy her new toddler a gameboy thing and she's going to see a bunch of hate and stuff and skip it.
@OrigamiRobot Why complain though?
Keep your 3DS

Invariably, people complaining about the 2DS have 3DS's already. It's very easy to turn that thing into a 2DS. It's called turning the 3D slider all the way down.

How does this negatively impact you?

9:09 PM
I am complaining about the poor design choice.

@OrigamiRobot Poor for whom?

Everyone.

Honestly, the 2DS looks like a fairly good design for the games it's meant to be played (i.e. Pokemon X and Y).

@OrigamiRobot Eh, I think it looks okay as a kids thing.

@GnomeSlice Do people buy toddlers gameboys?

9:10 PM
@Wipqozn YES.

@Wipqozn I think that's what nintendo was getting at with the 2DS. It's targeted at children 2-6

Define toddler.

I know kids that aren't even in 1st grade with cell phones.

@Yuki That's silly.

@GnomeSlice You don't even understand the complaints. You just saying "it's for kids. It's OK."

9:10 PM
@Yuki I don't have a 3DS yet but I'm definitely getting a 3DS, not a 2DS, for Pokemon X/Y.

@Wipqozn Yes, it is.

@Yuki 1st grade isn't toddler.

@OrigamiRobot I don't understand the reason for the complaints in the first place.
People are getting angry about it, like Nintendo has taken something away from them.

On a different note, KSP Weekly, September 03 '13

@GnomeSlice Look at where the ABXY buttons are.

9:11 PM
Which is just... :D

@Wipqozn It's a fairly apt comparison for parents buying electronics for children that really wouldn't be able to use them.

@GnomeSlice Some people are just stupid.

@OrigamiRobot I haven't used my DS Lite in a long time, is it not the same orientation?
That reminds me I need to try to order a new touch screen for it

You can't group "complains about 2DS" with "gets angry and want to burn Nintendo to the ground".

Mine is going bad

9:12 PM
@GnomeSlice This is why you are stupid to say people shouldn't complain.

@GnomeSlice No... on normal DS and 3DS models, the buttons are next to the lower screen.

You don't even take the time to look at what they are complaining about.

Although the Start and Select buttons move around with (literally) every DS release.

@OrigamiRobot Why complain about something that you aren't going to buy?

The 2DS design gets rid of the biggest structural weakness in the 3DS, which are the hinges, and children are the most likely to break device with a clamshell design.

9:12 PM
I'm pretty sure it's not targeted at people who already own a 3DS

@GnomeSlice Because I would have bought it.

Yeah actually, because the shoulder buttons are on the side, they had to move others so you can reach them all, but then can't reach the touch screen with your thumbs.

@GnomeSlice Why defend something you're not going to buy?

I'm not buying it because of it's design.

9:13 PM
@OrigamiRobot But... why? You have a 3DS?
I don't understand...
@RedRiderX Oh, they moved them to the top half?
Interesting.

@GnomeSlice You do understand that you don't need personal stock in something to make an argument about it, right?

@RonanForman Reaching the touch screen without lifting your hand is important for games that require good reaction times, but with turn-based "take your time" games like Pokemon and Fire Emblem, it's not so bad.

@OrigamiRobot To be honest, not really.
Sometimes I guess.

@Yuki Yeah fine. But that doesn't explain why they did it.

You are hopeless. Back to ignoring.

9:15 PM
Thanks for the star, whoever did that.

I regret ever stopping.

@OrigamiRobot Sorry. Talk to you later I guess.

@RonanForman Circuitry issues? Maybe it's not possible to put all the buttons and controls so close to each other with a touchscreen right there.

@Yuki Wha- they managed it with the DS and that's like 5 years old.

I don't understand why they removed the fold.

9:16 PM
@RonanForman The DS is also a clamshell design.

I'd be too worried about the screen breaking due to a kid dropping it.

@Yuki How does that affect anything?

3 mins ago, by Yuki
The 2DS design gets rid of the biggest structural weakness in the 3DS, which are the hinges, and children are the most likely to break device with a clamshell design.

@Yuki Why would a non clamshell prevent the same button placement on the lower half?

@Yuki Makes sense, but I'd be worried about the screens breaking now due to dropping it when not playing.
@OrigamiRobot Yeah, I hate the button placement.

9:17 PM
@Yuki And reveals a more important weakness: The screens.

@OrigamiRobot That might be related to the wedge shape, actually.

They probably spread them out because kids have less fine motor controls.
Also I feel like the thing is meant to be used while resting on the floor or a table or something, but I'm just guessing.

@GnomeSlice They've managed for that past 25 years kids have been playing console games.

@GnomeSlice It very much seems like it.

9:19 PM
@GnomeSlice That could be true, but I'd think most parents that would buy something like for their kdis would be buying ti for them on the go.
Like for car rides or if they need to go to a doctor or something.

@RonanForman I dunno, I hated the N64 controller design. The entire left half (D-Pad and left shoulder) was unreachable and it was nearly impossible to hit C-Up.

Or going through a grocery store, stuff like that.

@Wipqozn Maybe, but I feel like this is more of a stay-at-home fixture like a console than a mobile thing. It doesn't seem very portable.

:11065994 On the guy gnome, jeez. For when kids are ri- no... no... I'm not going to go there.

@Wipqozn you uh

9:20 PM
@Yuki I didn't find that when I was using it earlier today, the sensitivity of the analogue stick was my issue.

@RonanForman "Earlier today". I had problems reaching them with my tiny, tiny hands when I was a kid.

@Yuki You were supposed to move your left hand to use the dpad and left shoulder
Some games used the dpad but most used the stick

@GnomeSlice I'm assuming that's exactly what you're supposed to do with the 2DS's layout.

@GnomeSlice Yeah, I'm talking about what I think people will be using it for though.

Well, moving the hand. Not necessarily to hit those specific controls.

9:21 PM
@Wipqozn Yeah, I dunno, I can't really comment on that.
Because I don't know what I would use it for because I don't have children.
If I did I probably wouldn't bring it out and about with them though.

Designing a car without wheels because you want to target it at people who don't drive doesn't make any sense.

I'd take it on like trips and things.

Making a portable console meant for use at home for a target audience that will mostly be playing it on the go also doesn't make sense.

Wheeee, I have a contract.

@GnomeSlice If I had kids that's exactly when I would bring it out. Kids get bored when their folks are running errands. Portable games helps them be less bored.

9:22 PM
Can somebody clear the stars on origamirobot's last message please?
It's making me feel bad.
@Wipqozn Yeah, it does seem kind of strange.
Thanks, mystery hero.

@Wipqozn Wait. Doesn't "portable" mean "to be used while in motion, or on the go"?

@Yuki I said that wrong,. Look now.

Another healthy reminder to NEVER move to NC: wbtv.com/story/23318847/…
Fuck this state.

@spugsley Plus you live there.

@spugsley ...what.

9:24 PM
@GnomeSlice yeah. Shit like this happens ALL THE TIME in NC

Holy fucking shit.
No wonder housing is so cheap there. Who would ever want to live there?

Q: Locking Xbox 360

sommerjjTo make a long story short, I need to lock my Xbox when I'm away from the house to prevent my youngest sibling from getting into it on the occasions he's left home alone. Is there a way to lock it so that he can't use it? I searched through settings on the console but found nothing to indicate ...

@Wipqozn Also, that car analogy is completely incongruous. People who don't drive simply won't buy cars. Are you saying that Nintendo is designing the 2DS for people who don't play games?

I take it this is one of those states where Obama lost because he's black?

> "Pennycooke then acknowledges the request is a "sensitive situation" and said quality trumps quantity."
That's absolutely shameful.

9:26 PM
I remember seeing part of that video where this group went around interviewing people from the south, and far, far too many of them refused to vote for Obama because of his skin colour.
It was appalling.

@Wipqozn I'm glad we live in Canada.

@Wipqozn yup. That's NC's thing.
@GnomeSlice you should be

There's still racism here, but not like in the southern parts of the US

@Wipqozn Nah, he won NC IIRC.

@Yuki I couldn't come up with a better analogy on shrot notice, but that was th eidea. They're designing a product for a target audience which doesn't exist if it's meant to be at-home toddlers.

9:27 PM
@GnomeSlice very few places are as racist as the southeastern US

@spugsley openly*

@spugsley ractist sounds like a metal band

@OrigamiRobot fair enough
@GnomeSlice bahahaha

@GnomeSlice There was an incident in Nova Scotia a year ago which involved Racism. I can't remember all the details but it was all over the new network wide because of just how rare it was in Canada. It was all over TV for a long time.

@Wipqozn I don't remember that, but I don't really listen to the news.
It is pretty rare here though.

9:29 PM
Just because people in some places have the common sense to know it's impolite doesn't mean it doesn't exist in those places.
Same with sexism.

@GnomeSlice I still see a lot of racism, just not against blacks.

I don't see much, but I'm not the most observant apple in the drawer.

@GnomeSlice lol apple in the drawer is like the most adorable expression I've ever heard

@JasonBerkan Really? I don't really see any. Then again, maybe it's just because of the company I choose to keep.

@Wipqozn Head into any small town near a reserve and go for coffee. You'll hear (and see) racism.

9:38 PM
There are still places in Canada (and, I imagine, elsewhere) where there has been so little diversity for so long, that while it's not openly discussed, there can be some very racist assumptions buried deep in the fabric of "unspoken knowledge".
Kinda like ticks. Sleeping, cranky ticks.

@JasonBerkan Well that sucks. I knew racism against Natives was the most wide spread in NA, but didn't think it was that widespread.
err, NA should be Canada.

People are equally shitty no matter where you go.
The best you can do is try not to be shitty yourself.

@Wipqozn It's also unfortunate that there is a lot of justifiable hatred of the white man among native communities. I honestly can't believe how screwed up we've made things.

@RedRiderX Sometimes you don't even know it's there, if you aren't the "target demographic", so to speak. You can be talking about the weather, who's getting married, and then: "I hear [person] is dating a black." Followed by knowing nods and clucks from those around.

Rule of thumb: A person doesn't suck. People suck.
2

9:45 PM
It's kind of breathtaking, sometimes.

@RedRiderX If someone said something like that when they were talking to me, I wouldn't nod and chuckle. I'd ask them why it matters. Then I might never talk to them again.
@JasonBerkan Such as?
There's been a very... dark history between Canada and naitves, but I wouldn't call iot justifiable hatred for whites as a whole.
That's how racism and the like exists.

@Wipqozn Residential schools?

You hate an entire group for the actions of individuals.

Maybe justifiable was a little strong.

Understandable would have been a better choice, I think.
Given the point I think you're trying to convey.
RAcism is almost never justified, since you're basing entire groups on a select subset of that group.

9:50 PM
@Wipqozn Yeah, definitely. But when it's family or pseudo-close family, it can be hard.

When people make ridiculous "all black people are thugs" it's not justified just because they've known black people who were thugs. It might be understandable, but not justified.
Case in point: I think my generation would be appalled on the whole on how North Americans were treated in the past.

@RedRiderX Most of my family back home is like this

IT's not fair to judge me based on how people in the past behaved.

I just try to avoid the topic.
And them in general

Gah.

9:52 PM
I hate to generalize, but I get the feeling that most people don't understand that there's a sharp divide between "understandable" and "justified".

Stupid client. Made me miss my bus.

@Yuki I think that's understandably justified.

@OrigamiRobot I think it's understandable justified that you're handsome.

@gnome I like how I know that whenever I get a ping of the "@badp does it too" kind, it's always going to be you

@Wipqozn :O

9:54 PM
@badp The next time someone says "That man saved orphans from a burning fire!" I promise to respond with "@badp does it too!"

@wipq I do that by closing their questions on sight so they can focus on running out
the alternative is they f5 spam their wow question waiting for an answer

Anyway, enough of dwelling on the worlds problems.
EVERYBODY DANCE!
Eergh, I deleted a comment while I was editing it, and I kind of got stuck.

I fail to see how this is better than Gnome swearing...

10:00 PM

FAE
Ugh I feel unfocused and restless and exhausted and just completely off today, I hate it.

@FAE Give up, go home

Ok, enough of the dancing pictures.

fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine~

10:02 PM
@FAE "Sounds like a case of the Mondays." ducks under a table

FAE
@fredley I am home, it's midnight. :(

@FAE Curl up, go to sleep

I've never actually heard that phrase spoken seriously, to be honest.

@FAE Was about to say ...

DERP
what ami even doing
Nope!
Aargh!!
Finally worked...
Not even worth it now...

10:08 PM
@RedRiderX Failed jokes are bad, and you should feel bad

@fredley "X is bad, and you should feel bad" comments are bad. And you should feel bad.

@fredley :'(

@Yuki Everything is bad, and we should all feel bad.

@fredley :'(
I feel like we should start dancing again...

Q: What is the newest Cookie Clicker link?

SouppieI can't find a working version of the Cookie Clicker game (http://orteil.dashnet.org/cookieclicker/ doesn't work). Is there an other link or do you have to download something to make it work? Or does the site have some problems currently?

10:11 PM

@fredley Indeed.

@fredley ...I just asked myself if it was Friday before clicking on that link...

@RedRiderX It's exceedingly well executed, methinks Google lent them some engineers
@Unionhawk The terrorists trolls have won

Wait, Google is actually for serious naming the next Android release Kitkat and not Key Lime Pie?

@ToxicFrog Yes

10:21 PM
Goddamnit, I thought someone had gotten their hands on the announce mailing list and was having a bit of fun

@ToxicFrog It makes no sense, they don't need the money.

@fredley Both parties say that no money changed hands in either direction
@fredley the Android team just didn't like the KLP name for some reason and there were kitkats on the snack shelf
And they are apparently super suggestible by sugary treats

@ToxicFrog Then KitKat have had an enormously lucky day.

Which is a shame because key lime pie is way tastier

Wait, Google is naming a release after a brand name?
Wat
KLP is way better

10:23 PM
@SaintWacko It seems to be the time of the year for crazy stunts.

@SaintWacko Kerbal Lime Pie

Kerbal Lime Planet.

FAE
I'm trying to figure out how I feel about Amazon's Kindle Matchbook program.

Kerbal Lace Programme
@FAE I want it so bad, but being in the UK it will not be here for ages because Amazon hates the not-US

FAE
@fredley Yeeeeeep.

10:26 PM
@FAE It's a step in the right direction.

I'm personally amazed it's taken this long, it's going to massively boost sales of printed books which is something publishers desperately need

FAE
@fredley I just... on one hand, it's everything I ever wanted in regards to physical/ebook relationships.
On the other, it's Amazon, which means they'll have a monopoly on it. How are other ebook manufacturers even supposed to compete with this at all?

I wonder if they'll honor it both ways, i.e. if I bought the ebook I can pay extra to 'upgrade' and the the real book too

FAE
manufacturers, sellers, whatevs

Because I would immediately sink £50 into Amazon if that was the case

10:27 PM
@FAE The name "Kindle Matchbook" sounds like they're going set books on fire.

@FAE This won't change Amazon's complete and utter position of dominance one jot

FAE
@fredley Yeah, but I guess I'm one of those weird people who still enjoys brick and mortar stores and it makes me sad that this is just going to twist the knife even more.

And it's easy for others to compete, as all ebook systems are tied up with book sellers in some way

@FAE Oh, there's quite a mass of different ways to go about this - and more attractively, too.
@FAE This is a push that should come from publishers in some form.

I'm ambivalent. I don't want paper books. I want cheaper eBooks.

10:30 PM
@JasonBerkan ಠ_ಠ

MeatStare @JasonBerkan
@JasonBerkan ಠ_ಠ

@FEichinger Storage ain't cheap.

For me, physical books depend on the book itself.

@JasonBerkan I want paper books.

@JasonBerkan Paper books are awesome and eBooks are already surprisingly cheap.

10:30 PM
I want ALL the paper books.

If I like it and find it re-readable, I'll definitely get the physical copy. Otherwise, I'll probably stick to the digital versions.
At this point, eBooks are just cheaper than physical editions so I use the digital versions as a screening process.

@FEichinger Every time I've looked for a book I wanted to read, they've run around $10. They are competing with the library, so...

FAE
@fbueckert Same.
I get really... like... irrationally angry when I see that the Kindle price on a book is higher than the physical price.

Besides, my books are competing with my video games for space on my shelf.

Yeah, I'm a fan of paper too.

FAE
10:32 PM
I don't understand that at all.

@FAE Yeah, thank publishers for that.

If an entire forest isn't destroyed by me buying a book I'm not satisfied.

Them and Apple price fixing eBooks.

FAE
There's no shipping cost, no storage cost, just... a;lsdkfjas;ldjf. It makes me want to scream.

Which I believe they're in an antitrust lawsuit about.
@FAE aka. "Yay, more profit for doing nothing!"

FAE
10:33 PM
@fbueckert Exactly. And often, it's not just like, 50 cents or something, it's like 5 dollars or more expensive and I just... no. I can't. I can't pay that.

People be crazy, yo.
@FAE Especially with the crazy thought that you're only buying a license. One they can revoke whenever they damn well feel like.

FAE
@fbueckert Yeeeeep. At least with physical books, I can do whatever I please with them. I de-DRM any Amazon purchases I make to keep for my own usage.

Honestly, I use the library more than I do bookstores, eBooks, and whatnot.

@FAE Oh, good, I'm not the only one

@FAE Exactly. Paying the same price (or more) for something that's way more restricted than a physical copy is where I go, "Nnnnnope."

10:37 PM
@Yuki Does your library offer e-books?

Once publishers allow me to do absolutely everything I can do with a physical book, with no risk of losing those rights, THEN I'll buy eBooks.

FAE
@SaintWacko It's pretty much instant tab closure for me. I just get so mad.
To be fair, it's a matter of perspective.
I buy games on Steam that are also full price.
(Not often, for triple A stuff, but I do)

@FAE How are/did you liking/like XCOM?

FAE
Sometimes I still buy physical editions, even if it uses Steamworks for DRM, like Civ V, because I had to have the Collector's Edition.
@fbueckert I haven't had a chance to start it yet. @_@ My summer has been super busy and I've been really stressed lately. :( I have no idea how the hell it is now September.

Wait, there was "summer"?

10:42 PM
@FAE Tell me about it. Between dancing practice and launching a project, I've had a ton on my plate, too.

FAE
@fbueckert I shall! I plan on using names of various people because it sounds like playing is way more entertaining that way (not that it's not entertaining otherwise, but it makes stories more fun).

@FAE @AshleyNunn and her hug rocket launcher. :P

FAE
@fbueckert Haha yeah

I'd probably play more Afterlight if I could actually rename the characters. :(

FAE
@fbueckert It's funny how little things like that can make such a difference.

10:44 PM
@FAE Aftershock was awesome. @AshleyNunn was scarygood with her sniper rifle.
Even when she missed, she blew away bits and pieces of buildings.

FAE
Haha, awesome.

Yep, that sounds totally like @AshleyNunn. :P

@FAE 'twas. I took SO many pictures of awesome things.
You were the dual wielding psionic, if I recall correctly.

FAE
I believe so.

You had your own scary moments.

FAE
10:46 PM
Mwahahaha.

Waltzing up to Beastmen at point-blank range, and double tapping them.
With pistols.
...Dammit. Now I REALLY want to rename characters for Afterlight.

FAE
Okay, I'm gonna hop in the shower and see if that helps with some of this lingering flargh.

user58869
@FAE what is flargh?

FAE
@axrwkr Just a word I use for feeling kind of mentally under the weather, so to speak.

Jesus Dude, you got some real issues with people providing helpful answers. That was an hour ago. Right now it is sending 503. What part of 503 do you not understand? His browser probably ignored the 503 and just loaded what he got left in the cache, resulting in probably truncated javascript code. — leetfan 40 secs ago
...and I'm done.

user58869
10:53 PM
@FAE get well soon

I haven't played Afterlight since November. ><

Q: Effective military scheduling

user16766Recently my militia commander has got a bug up his rear. Looking at his thoughts, I see that he is both upset at being relieved from duty and also depressed from long patrol duty. I currently have him and two other dorfs in a squad. This squad is set to train year round. Should I intersperse the...

sigh We're going to get another Meta rage.

@Sterno is gone, so that was to be expected.

If I start another game of Afterlight, how much interest is there in people "calling" characters? I can't rename them, but I can train them as per your specifications.
