@ToxicFrog A lot more people are experiencing crashes and insane loading times right now than with 20. And there's a valid concern that there is nothing really motivating right now (there has been kind of a drought on new things to do).

It's nothing worth complaining about, that's just the nature of the thing. But it's definitely valid.

I may have slightly overengineered the delivery system for this.

And apparently, my last stage didn't have enough thrust to stop itself. It promptly hit Mun at higher than desired velocities.

It's beginning the TLI burn now and it has 3km/s dv left.

Oops. Don't forget to check the TWR of your descent stage before you launch!

Stupid piece of crap modem/router. My Mumble server wasn't accepting outside connections because the port range was a single value. I extend it to the port before and after, and it works like a charm.

@MBraedley I have concluded that router firmwares are written by drunk ex-Star Trek actors using Lego's RCX point and click programming interface.

@somequixotic The most sensible things are actually the hardest to develop.

Had a router firmware once that would fail to make any wireless connection if it tried to store more than four MAC addresses in the whitelist at a time.

It'd show as many of them in the interface as you like, but unless you trimmed the list down to 4 or less, no worky.

The problem really is that the firmware has to be small, comply with a variety of protocols and preferably not heat up the device all that much. Which can get problematic really fast.

@somequixotic Unfortunately, it's an ISP supplied unit, so my only real alternative would be to DMZ a router behind it and somehow set up the subnets so everything would work.

Ok, this may have been slightly overengineered.

@somequixotic It still assumes that there's enough capacity to actually add that sensible thing. Which in some cases would definitely be possible, but in a lot of cases it's just superfluous logic.

Launched it on seven mainsails; it's now landing on three NTRs and has about 800m/s left.

(And, since the end-user isn't supposed to touch it anyway, why on Earth would people test for them?)

It's a wonder they don't use something like a commodity smartphone ARM core (you know, ARMv7 Krait-something-or-other) instead of those ancient, often proprietary MIPS cores for modems/routers... they'd have so much compute power they wouldn't know what to do with it... and heat isn't an issue... I mean, if it's not an issue for a smartphone, how could it be an issue for a non-battery-powered stationary device?

@somequixotic ARM isn't all that durable for constantly running devices.

The life cycle of a proper router or modem should exceed that of the common smartphone by a factor of two to three. Usually.

@FEichinger there's a difference between features, and having things actually work in the way the user expects... if you're going to offer something but it has major limitations, at least document those in a text file somewhere, don't just leave the user hanging to wonder if they did something wrong.

making things nice and comfy for the user in the web interface is an admittedly low priority; and yet, many a modern router firmware includes things like AJAX updating UIs, all Web 2.0, but when it comes down to it, things just silently fail with no explanation.

to me that smacks of a lack of testing. you need to test everything about the device, even things that only the sysadmin will touch once in the lifespan of the device -- because chances are, a decent percentage of your users are going to touch it, and each one is going to get frustrated when they hit that. part of making a quality product is making sure the rough edges are filed down.

Yeah, a lot of the problems with routers are not due to intractable operating constraints but sheer laziness - witness how much better most custom router firmware is, often just by changing the default settings for things like conntrack so that they aren't braindead

@FEichinger you got me there -- definitely not in an ISP-supplied modem, but in things like recent Netgear retail router products, it's there.

I rue the day when the quality smartphone manufacturers inevitably give in to mimicking the lowest common denominator $25-in-manufacturing-costs Chinese smartphone market... I don't know what I'd do in that case... my Droid Maxx is my life companion... and let me say, that little phone has quality written all over it. figuratively and literally ;)

the limitations of routers past is an old, scabbed over wound now anyway... I'm happy with my Netgear N900 running DD-WRT, and I have yet to bump up against any laziness limitations like you find in the ISP modems...

eh... anyway... I think I'll wash down my epistemological crisis thanks to Hate Plus with a little stupidity in SR IV.... if I can figure out how to get gold in all the platforming rifts, I'll get that glide distance buff I've been wanting.

So I go to Launch Technic Launcher, and it launches just fine, I go to play one of the Mod Packs, and it installs everything, then it opens a White window, Stalls, then all of the sudden quits and logs out. This happens to all of the Mod Packs, and I run Mac OS X Version 10.8.4
