@SaintWacko I'd like it if you could do stuff like that in KSP.
But then, the physics engine requirements would be pretty darn obscene.

@fbueckert That would be amazing

@Ullallulloo Haven't the Russians put someone on the moon?

@Ullallulloo Need to change that

@fbueckert No.

7:00 PM
The sliver should be USA, and the rest should be Kerbin :P
Although I suppose technically they haven't walked on the moon, they've walked on the Mun

@SaintWacko Need a pie chart that shows: Kerbals successfully landed on Mun and Kerbals attempting to land on Mun.

@fbueckert There's only been one manned mission to the moon.

@GnomeSlice We really should change that.

@AshleyNunn apparently. it made me grumpy.

That's the first step to proper space exploration.

7:02 PM
@fbueckert It would be cool, but there's no really reason to, at the point we're at right now.

uhh WTF .SE

@GnomeSlice Overpopulation?

@GnomeSlice No, there's been several.

It's expensive, and right now all that will happen is we'll walk around a bit again, and then come home.

Zero gravity medicines and alloys?

7:03 PM
@Ullallulloo Manned? With people walking on it?

@agent86 Hey you're grump?

i just did a search for some criteria, and got 66 hits. Upon browsing to the bottom of my 15 results per page list, I click on the link for page 2. And now the .SE tells me that my search criteria returns zero results.

I'm adding a new FAQ entry: "AshleyNunn must be present at all times on the bridge in order to receive cat-related pings, or everyone everywhere will be banned for all time."

I keep missing the comma in that phrase. :|

SHUT. DOWN. EVERYTHING.

7:04 PM
@fbueckert We aren't going to solve any of that with a moon mission at our current global state. We'd just land, walk around, and leave. I don't think anyone even has a prototype for a viable moon base.
Besides, zero-gravity can happen in orbit, and not on the moon.

@GnomeSlice You honestly believe people are advocating manned missions to Mars, but haven't come up with viable moonbases?

Thirty-two astronauts were assigned to fly in the Apollo manned lunar landing program. Twenty-four of these left Earth’s orbit and flew around the Moon (Apollo 1 never launched and Apollo 7 and Apollo 9 were low Earth orbit spacecraft testing missions). In addition, nine astronauts flew Apollo spacecraft in the Apollo Applications Programs Skylab and Apollo–Soyuz Test Project. Twelve of these astronauts walked on the Moon’s surface, and six of those drove a lunar rover on the Moon. While three astronauts flew to the Moon twice, none of them landed on the Moon more than once. The nine Ap...

@fbueckert What, they are?

@GnomeSlice Look it up, dude.
There's an entire contingent of people who think making manned trips to Mars is possible with current technology.

@fbueckert I doubt there any any plans to land a base on the moon any time soon, but when I said 'there was no point', I meant 'no point to another moon mission where we walk around for a bit'.

7:06 PM
@GnomeSlice Six manned missions with two people walking on it each time and a third sitting in the thing and not walking on it.

@fbueckert Oh, it might be. But I don't think any country could afford it.

@GnomeSlice NOW you clarify.

@Ullallulloo Oh, huh, shows how much I know.

@fbueckert Physically possible probably. Psychologically, though, what effect would it have on the astronauts?

@fbueckert I've been clarifying.
3 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
It's expensive, and right now all that will happen is we'll walk around a bit again, and then come home.

7:06 PM

@GnomeSlice And that's what I've been refuting.
You've been thinking just in terms of landing.

@fbueckert I don't think we're arguing about the same thing.

I've been thinking of pushing all the materials needed for a moonbase into a ship, and dumping that onto the moon.

@StrixVaria Yeah, without a way to get back, I don't see it being a great idea.

So far all of the moon missions have been the same, basically. Unless we do something different, there's no point.

7:08 PM
@StrixVaria Not a clue.

@fbueckert I landed a moon base before you did!?

@GnomeSlice Now you're talking KSP.
I'm talking real life.

@Ullallulloo Even if there were a way to get back, the travel time is insane.

HEY EVERYONE @GNOMESLICE BEAT @FBUECKERT

Spending 6 months or so cooped up in a tiny-ass shuttle with the same 2 people?

7:08 PM
@StrixVaria Yeah, that too.

@StrixVaria I believe it's about a year round trip.

56 secs ago, by fbueckert
I've been thinking of pushing all the materials needed for a moonbase into a ship, and dumping that onto the moon.

@GnomeSlice Moon.

@fbueckert That's not KSP you're talking about?

Not Mun.
I've been clarifying the disconnect in our positions.

7:09 PM
Because I somehow doubt you have access to funds, materials, and workers to launch a mission to the moon.

@fbueckert It would look quite similar, I suspect

Which is why I assumed you were talking about KSP.

@GnomeSlice Myself, no.

OH, I get it.

But it's something we SHOULD be looking at.

7:09 PM
@fbueckert Yeah, okay, sorry.

As a human race.

@fbueckert Yeah, that would be great. When I said 'no point', I meant 'unless we do something different from the last ones', sorry.

I'm thinking of buying some posters for the walls in my apartment, anyone knows a nice online store? been looking at thinkgeek and forhumanpeoples so far

@GnomeSlice Ok, that clarification I can agree with.

@fbueckert An orbital/asteroid station would be more useful

7:10 PM

The conversation here earlier reminds me of how Mei Ling in Metal Gear Solid mentions that the Soliton Radar system is made from "currently existing technology"

@SaintWacko Also orders of magnitude further out.

@fbueckert No, I mean in orbit around the earth
then bring an asteroid in

@saintwacko we need an L5 station and a lunar base...

I'm more interested in what's living in our oceans than people living on the moon.

7:11 PM
@OrigamiRobot That might be because there's nothing living on the moon.

@SaintWacko Exactly HOW are we going to get an asteroid if we can't even man the moon?

@sarge_smith lunar base wouldn't be terribly useful

@SaintWacko Not at first, no.
Probably not for a very long time, actually.

@GnomeSlice Fix'd

@SaintWacko Unless there are resource deposits available we can use to build more ships.

7:12 PM
@fbueckert moving an asteroid and establishing a lunar colony would be very different
@fbueckert Right

@OrigamiRobot Oh.

user15026
@agent86 It made me giggle, in that way that dark humor does.

it's a stable platform that lets us access the rest of the solar system.

But that's what the asteroid is for

See, you changed subjects there. I was confused.
@sarge_smith So is the Earth.

7:13 PM

90% of the things I say are meant to confuse someone. Usually @GnomeSlice.

@Powerlord What?

@AshleyNunn NEVERMIND

@SaintWacko The energy expenditure of shifting an asteroid to earth would be orders of magnitude greater than seeing if there are usable resources on the moon.

@GnomeSlice I changed the subject.

@gnomeslice the earth is at the bottom of a 10m/s squared gravity well.

New Indie Royale. Buncha boring games you might be more interested in than I am.

the moon is not

@Powerlord Yeah, that's not what I was talking about at all. I don't think 'subject' was the right word either.

7:13 PM
@Wipqozn WRY!

user15026
@Ullallulloo Best idea ever

@fbueckert Right, if there are useable resources on the moon it changes things

@Ullallulloo HOW DARE YOU RESTRICT MY CHOICES

7:15 PM
@GnomeSlice Not if it were mined and built on the moon

@SaintWacko And spending a lesser amount of energy to resolve that issue is more reasonable than heading several AUs outside our gravity well to see if we can nudge an asteroid our way.

@AshleyNunn oh, I meant you not being pingable made me grumpy.

Someone already suggested VLR to Fluttershy, right?

user15026
@agent86 I apologize! I was busy last night eating noms at my mom's so I did not come in here

@SaintWacko I really don't think the Moon has all of the materials that go into building electronics, spacecraft, and space suits.

7:15 PM
@SaintWacko Which would be the whole point of colonizing the moon.
Other than overpopulation, anyways.
And scientific research.

@AshleyNunn NO APOLOGIES. only bannnnnnnns.

@fbueckert Better to use probes to check first, though
Or small groups, not whole colonies

user15026
@agent86 bans herself

@fbueckert And moon cupcakes.

why would we need to do that? the moon contains all the materials the earth does. set up a smelter and you can build the stuff there... you need an L5 station to handle consumables for the lunar crew

7:16 PM
@AshleyNunn BETTER

@SaintWacko Probes are a better way of saying, "Let's fire a rocket really fast into something solid, and analyze the debris."

user15026
@agent86 GOOD I AM GLAD YOU ARE HAPPY

@fbueckert ...no. No, it's not

@SaintWacko It's a much faster way than landing, taking core samples, and analyzing them.

7:18 PM

Plus, explosions!

user15026
@badp DONT MESS WITH MY LIBRARIES

@fbueckert That's not how we analyzed the other planets in the solar system...

Who DOESN'T want to figure out what a planet is made out of by blowing up parts of it?

@AshleyNunn "WHY IS LIBRARY SO OLD AND BORING"

user15026
7:18 PM
@badp BECAUSE YOUR FACE

@fbueckert Yes, but the sample... thingy... is much smaller

@badp HOW CAN I BOOK BETTER

Can't remember the word

user15026
@agent86 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

@SaintWacko It also goes through several layers all at once.

@fbueckert Depends how hard you hit it

@badp "WHAT IS THIS OLD BOOK WITH A BOY IN IT?"

ARE THERE ALSO HUEY AND LOUIE DECIMALS?

7:20 PM
"WHAT IS THE CODE FOR PORNOGRAPHIC BOOKS THEY ARE THE BEST BOOKS. WITH PICTURES"

@badp 666.66
Because pornography is EVIL!

WHAT KIND OF TREE MAKES LIBERRIES?

@powerlord 696.9

@Powerlord I'm fine with putting 50 Shades of Gray straight in there

Anyways, my original point was that if there are not suitable materials on the moon, the asteroids are a plentiful and easy source of materials, including ice and air

7:20 PM
@badp Try xxx

"WHY AM I BANNED FROM THE LIBRARY"

668, the neighbor of the beast

@SaintWacko Yeah, that I agree with.

@badp Erotic literature != pornography.

I'm just thinking firing a subluminal probe into the moon first to figure out what's up there will take much less energy.

7:21 PM
for lack of "-graphy" I imagine

@fbueckert The choice then is to move one into earth orbit, or mine in the belt

still it's the most explicit book I've ever held in my own hands.

@SaintWacko asteriod mining is the future... moon and orbitals are the infrastructure we have to build to get there

WHAT KIND OF JOKES DO LIONS LIKE?

@sarge_smith I don't see the moon as a necessary step

@SaintWacko That, I can definitely see.

7:23 PM
@OrigamiRobot IF A LION EATS A BOOK IN THE LIBRARY DO I REPAY IT OR THE LION?

It's useful if you want to have colonies off the planet, but as an industrial location it pales in comparison to a station in orbit around Earth, or in a Lagrange point

But I'd still say expend the .1% energy requirements of GETTING the asteroid, and see if we can just base from the moon first.

@SaintWacko we might be able to swing with just orbitals but all those miners need a place to lay their heads

Wait, that's the wrong one.

user15026
That's it if any of you hit Libraries I am banning on sight.

Life, the Universe and Everything (1982, ISBN 0-345-39182-9) is the third book in the five-volume Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy science fiction series by British writer Douglas Adams. The title refers to the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. The story was originally outlined by Adams as Doctor Who and the Krikketmen to be a Tom Baker Doctor Who television six-part story, but was rejected by the BBC. It was later considered as a plotline for the second series of the Hitchhiker's TV series, which was never commissioned. A radio adaptation of Life, the Universe and Everythi...
No, it was the right one.

@SaintWacko so you are going to keep shipping air and food from the bottom of the gravity well?

7:24 PM
I think. I always get them mixed up.

@Ullallulloo oooh, there's information science too in there?

@GnomeSlice Good one

That makes it so much easier

@sarge_smith Nope, from the asteroids

IS INFORMATION SCIENCE BEST SCIENCE. COMPUTER SCIENCE IS BETTERT

7:25 PM
If KSP actually had deformable terrain, you bet your boots I'd try to fire a probe into Mun as fast as I possibly could.

air and water from the asteroids, and food from hydroponic farms

Wasn't there going to be one more book in the Hitchhiker's series, but Douglas Adams died before writing it?

@AshleyNunn I'm going to tag all your questions with :P

Granted, resuming the plot would have been tough.

@SaintWacko we lack the ability to do that yet... it's still to expensive to lift those things into orbit

7:25 PM
IS IT OK TO RUN AN ILLEGAL LIBRARY FROM MY LOCKER AT SCHOOL?

@Powerlord Considering the end of the last one, yeah

Did I miss something? Why are people posting silly questions in all caps?

@Ullallulloo WHAT IS ILLEGAL ABOUT YOUR ILLEGAL LIBRARY ANYWAY?

@GnomeSlice They're teasing @AshleyNunn about Library.SE

Oh.

7:26 PM
@sarge_smith The framework could be lifted, and the soil could be made from pulverized asteroid, or material from the moon, plus concentrated nutrients and bacteria

Oh, someone else wrote the sixth book
And Another Thing… is the sixth instalment of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy". The book, written by Eoin Colfer, author of the Artemis Fowl series, was published on the thirtieth anniversary of the first book, 12 October 2009, in hardback. It was published by Penguin Books in the UK and by Hyperion Books in the US. Colfer was given permission to write the book by Adams' widow Jane Belson. Unlike the previous Hitchhiker's works, the title is not a quotation from the first novel, but taken from the third chapter of So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, whe...

@OrigamiRobot closed off-topic: migrated to... scifi

@Powerlord There's a sixth?

@badp Heh

@GnomeSlice Not canon.

@GnomeSlice More to the point, is it worthy of the series?

@Powerlord Is he any good? The guy who wrote the fourth and fifth books did a pretty good job, I think.
@StrixVaria What?

@GnomeSlice It is not canon.

@StrixVaria Uh, okay.

Q: I think I found a search bug

EnderI just did a search for some criteria, and got 60 some odd hits. Upon browsing to the bottom of my 15 results per page list, I click on the link for page 2. And now the .SE tells me that my search criteria returns zero results. Searched for: pokemon stats

0
Q: How do stats work?

EnderWhat are all of the available shown AND hidden stats available to my pokemon and what do they mean? Please specify if an item is version specific. (IE: not present in pokemon blue but perhaps is present in diamond)

I have all 5 books together in the HitchHiker's Trilogy

@Lazers It's been too long since I applied status-completed to something

@Lazers That is so broad.
I want to answer it but I'm so lazy and it would take so many words.

@StrixVaria It isn't?

@Lazers We should close this, he wants to know about shown AND hidden stats, that's too many questions in one.

7:30 PM
@SaintWacko check out amazon.com/Firestar-Saga-Michael-Flynn/dp/0812530063,,, four books, very good exploration of current and future needs of spacefaring

@StrixVaria Should it even be left open?

@SaintWacko The fact that we're intelligently talking about lifting infrastructure into space makes me happy.

@SaintWacko I don't know. I think it might be a dupe of like 3 other questions but this new search is hurting my eyes.

@sarge_smith Will do

7:30 PM
@fbueckert Me too. I love this so much
@StrixVaria New search...

@Powerlord Unless Douglas Adams outlined it then it's not.

@GnomeSlice Can't tell if serious...

@StrixVaria What. Why is everything so tiny

@OrigamiRobot How could you possibly think I was serious.
I was making a comment on the fact that my 'how do steam downloads work' question was closed.

@SaintWacko I don't see a question on how IVs work.

7:31 PM
@GnomeSlice It's not the most ridiculous thing you've said.

@OrigamiRobot Can you not Conclave at work?

@fbueckert I've always been interested in space travel, propulsion techniques, colonization techniques, etc

@Fluttershy I can RDP

@StrixVaria I'm sure I remember seeing one
I think it was part of another question

Speaking of Conclave, whoever I was playing with, I made moves today.

7:32 PM
@GnomeSlice You had several people explaining to you why your question was closed. Please, please stop bitching about community consensus.

Something about gaining stats

@SaintWacko Nuclear pulse detonation both fascinates me, and scares the everliving crap out of me.

@fbueckert Yeah, it's unbelievably efficient

@fbueckert and fun for all ages :)

But is really only useful in deep space

7:33 PM
@Fluttershy It was closed because I was asking too many things. I'm bitching about community consensus being inconsistent. Besides which, 'consensus' means everyone agrees.

Well, usable

@sarge_smith As long as we have enough radiation shielding in place, anyways.

I was just joking anyway, my question wasn't that good.

@fbueckert Nuclear Launch Detected.

I'm voting to close as too broad.

7:34 PM
@fbueckert true story...

@Powerlord Nu-Nu-Nu-Nu-Nu-Nuclear Launch Detected.

@GnomeSlice Wrong

@StrixVaria Wat. How is it too broad, there are a set number of stats that can be applied to a Pokemon. Just list them all and explain what they are.

@fbueckert Oh, you play CnC, I see
Also, have you read Harry Turtledove's WorldWar series?

@SaintWacko No, that's staggered Ghosts.

7:35 PM
@SaintWacko I was thinking Batman.

And a player having fun with his prey.

@GnomeSlice It's broad because it is across too many games.

@GnomeSlice Because IVs themselves are huge and have a ton of math. EVs are huge and require a separate ton of math. Stats themselves can all go under one heading.

Or just getting a ship up to a relativistic speeds.

That's at least 3 separate questions worth of content.

7:35 PM
I'm pretty sure in that, they build a nuclear pulse detonation ship, and use more nukes to pump gamma ray burst lasers

Plus the fact that it changed across generations.

@OrigamiRobot Oh. Didn't realize that.

@SaintWacko I've tried Turtledove's books.
Couldn't get into them.

@fbueckert Ah, that's too bad. I'm a huge fan of his sort of alternate history books

Nuclear Dinner Detected

7:38 PM
@SaintWacko They definitely have interesting premises, but I just couldn't get into the writing style.

@fbueckert Ah, okay

nVidia released new display drivers for Windows that patches the security hold the last ones had.

@Powerlord That's pretty much all patches do anymore

@Fluttershy Well, on the bright side, I've spent most of the day playing Chivalry.
