@InvaderSkoodge Aww Lilian is a pretty name. Congratualtions.

@InvaderSkoodge What's the point of these mails, anyway? Trying to scam you out of your money by pretending to need help in some way? And ... why does it even work if so?

@MartinSojka I have no clue.

FAE
While I'm not the biggest fan of these, aren't Identify this thing with a concrete evidence of its existence allowed here?

@FAE Voted...
But not to reopen.

@FAE I think this one was mostly not constructive and too localised. I mean, it sure was worth answering (which is why I did so), but it was both trivial (FFS, Google for the name) and not helping anyone but the asker.

FAE
2:11 PM
@MartinSojka How was it non-constructive? If there's no research effort, we should downvote instead of close.

@FAE How often do you think anyone else would have the same question, and if they did, how the hell would they be able to find the answer here?

FAE
It was closed as off-topic, but as per Mark Trapp's answer here, it's still asking for something within our purview.

@MartinSojka I actually agree. This is a good example of too localized (finally).

I can't cast close votes, so I have little influence about the close reason here. For me, this question is simply so badly written that the only search term which consistently can lead to it ("プリルラ") also leads straight to the Wikipedia article about the game. As the first search result.

FAE
@MartinSojka If details of the gameplay are added to the question body, it'd make it more googleable.

2:16 PM
@FAE In GW2, your first 5 skills are dictated by your primary/off handed weapon. If you use a two-handed weapon, does that dictate all 5 skills then?

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge Yes.

@FAE If. Until then, closing a question so it can be improved upon is a valid way to deal with it.

I read about the classes and decided to try Guardian this weekend.

FAE
@MartinSojka This goes back to the discussion we had a few weeks ago about closing for the right reasons though. No one's going to try to improve a post that's been closed as Off-Topic.

@FAE I did for some of mine. :)
If the asker can't be bothered ... why should we?

FAE
2:18 PM
NC, NARQ, Localized, even some dupes can be improved upon to make them re-openworthy.
@MartinSojka Because we want to make the site and the internet a better place. By that same logic, why should we care about closing or cleaning up spam?

@FAE The problem is closure is viewed as a slap on the wrist.

FAE
Because we want to maintain our standards of quality. And we're allowed and encouraged to edit other people's stuff, and if people aren't comfortable with that, they should GTFO, says so right in the FAQ. Yes, we often encourage the poster themselves to improve their stuff first, but sometimes people just go ahead and do so, and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as it's maintaining original intent.

We should add "Nothing personal. We love you." to the end of every close reason.

@FAE So go ahead and edit it?

@FAE While I'm certainly not a fan of Identify this thing type of questions, yeah, they are on-topic.

FAE
2:22 PM
@fbueckert I'm not either, but I do think we need to maintain some consistency here.

@FAE The consistency in this case was, "Ah! ITG! Close it! Close it now!" :P

I mean, sure - a question like "What is this seemingly Japanese arcade game which has pink elephants appearing from the space between some giant woman's legs?" might be marginally useful to more than one person. "What's the name of the game which I just posted the name of?" isn't.

Still certainly not a fan at all, especially when we're being used as a glorified translation service, but yes, it's still on-topic.
So I've voted to re-open, and downvoted, because I think the question is stupid.

@fbueckert Burn it! Burn it with fire!

Heck, the poster VTC'd himself!

FAE
2:25 PM
@fbueckert Likely based on the first comment left.
Which is slightly inaccurate.

I mean, let's be serious. The poster basically did something akin to posting the question "I found this cool game cover; what's the game called?" accompanied by this image:

@FAE True

@MartinSojka Hm, yeah

@MartinSojka It's an absolutely stupid question, and should be closed NARQ.
English is a requirement for the SE platform.
Which is where it differs from the question we're talking about.

So it's back to "We're providing translation service too!"?

2:27 PM
@MartinSojka It's still a stupid question.
The poster did zero homework himself.
But for consistency's sake, it meets the guidelines for .

... and this is why I think it should be closed, though not for being off-topic.

@FAE To be fair, a lot of those upvotes came before the answer became "Some identification questions are ok"

I mean, if we're getting bent out of shape about bad questions, let's at least get all indignant about not even actual questions. Like this one:
@evoelise - that was pretty interesting (I've wondered it while playing the game myself, but never did the math all the way). If you're still interested in having this posted you could create a question (e.g. "I've noticed the Skyranger seems fast; how fast does it actually travel?") and then restate your comments above as an answer to the question. — Chris Phillips 19 hours ago

FAE
@fbueckert I disagree that it falls under any of the NARQ criteria. It's not ambiguous, vague, overly broad, rhetorical or unanswerable.

I recall voting to ban game identification questions in all forms regardless of their merits.

2:30 PM
@FAE It's answered in the picture itself.
If that's not the definition of answering your own question, I don't know what is.

FAE
@fbueckert Lack of research does not make it closeworthy, it makes it downvoteworthy.

@FAE When the screenshot you post answers the question, there's no need FOR an answer.
You're just rep-whoring at that point.
At no point, when asking that question, does the asker NOT know the answer.

FAE
@fbueckert It was not answerable for the asker, and there are plenty of people who don't know how to read Katakana.

@FAE I was referring to the GW2 screenshot above.
The Katakana question, I agree with you on that one.

@FAE You don't even need to read it. Copy & Paste it into Google, hit the first (Wikipedia!) result, hit "English" for the English-language version thereof.

FAE
2:33 PM
@fbueckert If someone posted that, I agree, that would be the stupidest of stupid, but I have no interest in hypotheticals here right now, I'm talking about the question we just had.

@FAE Okie dokie.
And I've hashed out the fact that A) I think it's stupid and downvoted, and B) It still meets the guidelines, and I've voted to re-open.

@MartinSojka Lack of research has never been a close reason. If you hover over the downvote arrow, it's there, though. Which is why this question should remain open, but is perfectly acceptable to downvote. I don't like ITG questions any more than anyone else, but... "Look at this thing" questions are apparently allowed.

@Fluttershy Not doing even as much is not simply lack of research. It's lack of brain activity.

FAE
@MartinSojka But still not closeworthy.

@MartinSojka And we have measures for that! It's called downvoting.

2:37 PM
8 mins ago, by OrigamiRobot
@FAE To be fair, a lot of those upvotes came before the answer became "Some identification questions are ok"

If you really want to see lack of brain activity, check out some of Jim Thio's questions.

Q: Do Drones Alert & Report Your Position To Their Sectopod?

evoeliseThere's been several times when I have seen Drones come into view and they have retreated out of sight again. Then a turn or two later I get shelled by the Sectopod. I'm fairly sure I've not seen the actual Sectopod & it's not seen any of my squad. Has anyone else had this happen?

Okay, seriously. Wtf is this I don't even?

@Wipqozn Whatever that game is called. It's from Japan; you were expecting coherency?

@FAE As far as I see, it's closeworthy because nobody will find this question anyway, ever. Searching for it requires to already know the game name (even if in Katakana), which leads to the Wikipedia page first.
@Wipqozn See above. Two giant female legs, and pink elephants appearing from the space inbetween.
2

2:39 PM
@MartinSojka "Nobody will find the question" isn't a close reason.

@MartinSojka Technically, with the amount of Google SEO the SE network has, we could theoretically become the first search result.
And General Reference isn't a close reason, either.

@Wipqozn I see it as "not constructive". It brings exactly nothing to anybody besides the one who originally asked it.

> As it currently stands, this question is not a good fit for our Q&A format. We expect answers to be supported by facts, references, or specific expertise, but this question will likely solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion. If you feel that this question can be improved and possibly reopened, see the FAQ for guidance.
I don't see " brings exactly nothing to anybody besides the one who originally asked it" in the description of that close reason.

@fbueckert Great, polluting the internet search results with questions who only link to already existing better sources and prevent those to be higher up is certainly a worthy goal. </sarcasm>

@MartinSojka For what it's worth, I think it's an absolutely crappy question.
But we have to be consistent in how we handle these things.

2:43 PM
@MartinSojka No one is saying this question is good. It's complete shit. But terrible != close.

@Wipqozn ... and this question didn't solicit an extended discussion yet? Could have fooled me.

@MartinSojka Extended discussion doesn't mean an extended discussion about whether or not the question should be closed.

... oh, so just the other meta topics about the question count then. Fair enough.

FAE
@MartinSojka The meaning of that is in regards to inciting extended discussion in answers, like "I think Foo is the best Bar, what do you think?"

You're not going to get anyone to take your side with your current attitude, all you are doing is making me want to ignore you.

2:47 PM
I don't give a damn about anyone being on my side; I'm fine having my own side with just me in it. :)

@MartinSojka Easy, dude. Calm down.

FAE
@MartinSojka I understand your frustration, but we're trying to explain things, not attack you. I don't think it's very constructive to anybody if you just want to be snarky.

Let's go find other brainless questions to bash.
@MartinSojka Here. Read this.

You'll notice I was pretty constructive with the question. I even answered it quickly and precisely.

It has nothing to do with the current question.

2:49 PM
I still think it's worse than worthless to have it open; it's actively damaging.

@fbueckert I don't understand why you're linking this.

@Wipqozn Mostly to change the subject; we've hashed it out and are actively frustrating people.

FAE
@MartinSojka Upon what grounds?

@MartinSojka Then VTC again and hope 4 people agree. That's all you can do at this point.

FAE
Also, note that we've had straight out translation requests before which were not closed:
39
Q: What are the lyrics to the Turret Opera at the end of Portal 2?

Raven DreamerSo after you beat the main game and the finale movie starts to run, Chell's upward elevator-ing is abruptly halted by a quartet of turrets. Rather than shoot at you, they start to... sing? What are the turrets singing about? Is it Latin? (And even if it isn't, what are the translated lyrics?)

Q: Does "Katamari Damacy" actually translate to anything?

tesselodeI was wondering about this. I kind of doubt a katamari is a real thing, so maybe the word "katamari" is a made up, compound-y kind of word? That's what I'm guessing. Anyway, does katamari damacy actually mean anything?

2:52 PM
@fbueckert That one was hilarious

@SaintWacko Indeed. Not quite facedesk worthy, but not too far off.
I hope we actually get an answer to his question, though; I feel it would be worthwhile.

FAE
So we've so far not had an issue with any sort of slippery slope translation request problem.

@FAE If it stays open, the best case is that it'll be forgotten and never will find it again, ever. That's the best case of it having exactly zero worth. Anything else - like it displacing the legitimate first result in Google search and others - are damaging to the web infrastructure as the whole.

@fbueckert I loved how he linked screenshots of chat
as evidence of the fact that we were trolling him

@SaintWacko Most people that think they're being persecuted think everyone's out to get them, and that we would hide all evidence of trolling him.

2:54 PM
@fbueckert Whereas anyone who knows us knows we wouldn't bother hiding evidence of trolling :P

Not that I think we were, really. Just discussing the subject in chat, and trying to help him understand what was wrong with it.

@MartinSojka I was of the understanding that we wanted to be the top google hit.

@fbueckert It was more mocking, not trolling

If I was actively trolling (which I don't do; I have better things to do with my time), I would've edited it to be much more whiny.

@Fluttershy No idea who this "we" is, but I prefer to think globally, not just "what's good for this specific site or network of sites".

FAE
2:55 PM
@fbueckert To be fair, some people do say rather disparaging things about other users on the site who are not currently in the chat, either forgetting or not caring that the transcript is public. It doesn't really reflect well on us when we say something like "that user is retarded for asking that" and then they pop in.

That @MarkTrapp is such a fool. I hope he doesn't see this.

@FAE If I'm talking about someone directly, yeah, that's no good, and doesn't make me look good at all.

FAE
@fbueckert It's not even about what makes you look good that's the problem, it's that it reflects on us as a community.

20 hours ago, by OrigamiRobot
@Wipqozn is everyone's problem.

@FAE Yeah, I agree with that.

FAE
2:57 PM
You may say it, but if other people are either laughing or at the very least, not objecting, then it's tacit approval for what you just said.

@OrigamiRobot Except mine.

@OrigamiRobot and proud of it!

... and now back to teaching Minecraft how to do proper marching cubes.

@MartinSojka What?
That sounds interesting

@InvaderSkoodge ?

3:00 PM
@SaintWacko "Smooth" surfaces, kinda.

@FAE I would agree with that, too. And I know I'm guilty of that more than once.
To be fair, though, I do try to point out positive contributions of whoever it is we're talking about.

FAE
I mean, the bar for entry in chat is fairly low, and on one hand, we're actively encouraging users to come into here for stuff that may not fit on the site proper, and on the other, we've sometimes got people who are being directly insulting to said users for asking said question.

@MartinSojka Ah, I see. That sounds really neat
How are you teaching it to do that?

@SaintWacko Minecraft Forge has a specific "renderer" interface (ISimpleBlockRenderingHandler), which you can use to override any block's renderer, and you can apply it to base blocks as well. But for now, I just defined my own block ("Asphalt Road"), and test if I can make that one follow the terrain smoothly.

@GnomeSlice The joke is you need to read the FAQ.

3:10 PM
@Wipqozn Figured
I've read it, I have the badge.

@FAE I try to help all new users at least once. At the same time, a user who actively refuses help (such as user what's-his-face), is going to garner discussion, whether we like it or not. And their own actions are going to reflect badly on themselves.

@MartinSojka That could be useful. Sorta like paths in villages

Hey all - quick one - can I ask a question trying to identify and game, or is this against your policy? Some sites allow it (Sci Fi/Fantasy), others don't..

FAE
@fbueckert I tend to think that in general, it's never a bad thing to try to take the high road, even in the worst cases.

@stuffe No.
It's not allowed here.

3:12 PM
Can I ask in chat then? ;)

Of course!

FAE
@stuffe We do not allow ITG as in "This is what I remember, here's a description" as such anymore, no. We do allow limited game identification questions in regards to people posting stuff like screenshots or music clips asking for identification.
@stuffe Yep!

@FAE Mob mentality is a very a tricky thing; it's so easy to get caught up in it.
@stuffe Sure! Go ahead!

FAE
@fbueckert Indeed.

@FAE As a sidenote, I've tried very hard to help Jim. I still don't think he gets it, though.
For those of you that play XCOM, this question's gotten edited:

Q: Skyranger - Hypersonic?

evoeliseIt's the end of the month near the start of a ironman classic game and I have 2 satellites to launch. A terror mission has just come up & one of the sites is currently at max terror; if I have time to get there, complete the mission and get back I can lower the panic and deploy my satellite t...

Is that re-open worthy?

FAE
3:15 PM
@fbueckert Yeah, that's a tough nut to crack, it seems, in this case.

@fbueckert I think a question on how fast it goes in gameplay terms is on topic. This question still isn't quite there yet.

@FAE There's only so much help you can provide someone with before you have to go, "Nope. I'm done trying." and go your own merry way.

Thanks - ITG - This was from a preview I read in a magazine a few years ago, was PS3 specific, but may be cross platform; I only recall one scene:
The game setting is post apocalyptical, and there's a man with a satchel running away from a group of pursuers. The man hits a dead end and the group close in on him. He takes out a bottle of water from his satchell and throws it on the ground in front of the group, they all rush to get the water and the floor is revealed to be made from glass (covered in dust) and they all fall through it.

@InvaderSkoodge It's certainly much better than it was. I know they're waiting for a re-open so they can answer it, but I don't know how much it really affects gameplay.

| platforms = Xbox 360 (XBLA), PlayStation 3 (PSN), Microsoft Windows | media = Download }} I Am Alive is a survival horror video game developed by Ubisoft Shanghai and published by Ubisoft. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting and focuses on facing the permanent insecurity of a dystopian, decaying and hazardous world, and humanity's darkest inclinations towards brutality and materialism. Originally under development by Darkworks from 2005 until 2007, Ubisoft Shanghai completed the title. It was released for Xbox Live Arcade on March 7, 2012, for PlayStation Network ...

3:17 PM
@fbueckert Knowing how fast the various ships are can be really useful for figuring out if you have enough time to make it there and back before the end of the month (like the example he gives). Whether or not it is "hypersonic", however, is completely irrelevant.

@Wipqozn Genius, thank you so much.

@stuffe The Bridge comes through again!
Although, to be fair, quite often we get people asking, and all they get is, "Nope, haven't heard of that."

@fbueckert Part of that is because most descriptions people give are terrible.
"There was a game, and there was this guy, and he did stuff."

@Wipqozn And is the main reason we disallow ITG on the main site.

@Wipqozn Sonic 3.

3:19 PM
Or we provide a game, he goes, "Nope, that wasn't it."
And while we keep looking, he comes back and goes, "Yeah, sorry, that was it."

Nevermind

@SaintWacko Somebody who's played XCOM should comment on the question to give them pointers on what they should fix to make it acceptable.

@InvaderSkoodge Whatever, that was totally halo
@fbueckert I hadn't realized the edit was by the OP

Isn't the question in it's current form fine?

FAE
I just misread the title of this question as "Superspermbridge" and was like "What the hell are they playing?!"

3:23 PM
@FAE Figures

@FAE Someone's got a dirty mind this morning. :P

@fbueckert That's every morning.

FAE
@fbueckert A-It's 4:24pm here and B-this is not exclusive to mornings

@fbueckert The qualifier "this morning" is not needed

@FAE It's morning for me. Quiet everybody! The time is what I say it is!

3:24 PM
@FAE Oh, right. You live in one of those craaaazy time zones that aren't my timezone.

@FAE Even after you said that and I knew that wasn't what it said, that was still all I could see.

FAE
@InvaderSkoodge You're welcome!

@FAE It's the sequel to World of Goo

FAE
@SaintWacko ahahaha

I don't like this joke anymore.

3:26 PM

Dammit. Now I want to do a Jurassic Park marathon.

@fbueckert Take that free time!

FAE
@fbueckert Won't take long, there's only 2, remember?

@Wipqozn Eh. It would be, at most, an evening's worth.
@FAE I thought there was a third?

@Wipqozn :D

3:29 PM
@Wipqozn What server are you on in GW2?

FAE
@fbueckert No. No, there isn't.

@fbueckert I think the joke was the others are terrible.

Same as other Arqaders?

@InvaderSkoodge Crystal DEsert.

What are the other arqaders on?

3:30 PM
17 secs ago, by Wipqozn
@InvaderSkoodge Crystal DEsert.

@FAE Is this one of those, "We don't talk about it like it doesn't exist" shticks?

@Wipqozn Aww, I'm on Darkhaven

@fbueckert Yes.

Since @Wipqozn is on that server, I'll go on that server too since it's the best server.

@InvaderSkoodge <3

3:30 PM
I'm thinking I won't be playing GW2 because @Wipqozn is playing it.

Also, I've been leveling up my NEcromancer as of late. I think I'm going to make it my main secondary.

If I were @OrigamiRobot now I would edit that message to say something mean about @Wipqozn.

@InvaderSkoodge This is why you're best gir.

I'm going to play as a Guardian this weekend.

Guardian is a fun class.

3:31 PM
I read descriptions of the few classes that sounded interesting based on name alone, and of those the Guardian sounded the most fun.
I have no interest at all in half the classes.

@InvaderSkoodge I have never done that. That was Sterno.

Thief is a lot of fun
With sword/dagger and shortbow

Really only Guardian and Necromancer interest me.
@YiJiang Is it free because it sucks?

Possibly

3:34 PM
@YiJiang Isn't this the sequel to Earth 2140?
Might be worth a shot; as an RTS, 2140 wasn't so hot, but it had some moments.

@fbueckert Wouldn't the sequel be Earth 2141?

It's a sequel to Earth 2150, says Wikipedia

@Wipqozn If it was an actual numbering scheme, yes.
But that's like saying the next Anno should've been called Anno 1405.
@FAE Thanks! I can't now not see it!

Which was the sequel to Earth 2140

FAE
@fbueckert Mwahahaha.

3:36 PM
@fbueckert whoa, whoa. You mean that there aren't 1404 games in the Anno series?

Yup, I can't unsee the SuperSpermBridge either

@Wipqozn Sure ain't!
If there are, I have a ton of gaming to do.

FAE
@fbueckert Anno uses a specific numbering scheme actually so the years always add up to 9.

9 mins ago, by OrigamiRobot
I don't like this joke anymore.

@FAE You can borrow this if you want.

3:36 PM
@FAE What? Really?

@FAE Personally, I think that's kinda stupid, as they're shoehorning themselves into a contrived naming scheme.

Dammit brain, stop inserting 's's into the wrong places

What do we get next? Anno 2430?

ANNO OVER 9000

FAE
@YiJiang Yep. 1404, 1503, 1602, 1701, 2070.
@fbueckert I'm not sure they expected the series to be quite as successful as it became.
It didn't even break into the US market until 1404.

3:38 PM
@FAE That's a fair point.

FAE
or "Dawn of Discovery", as it was renamed for the US audience

A naming scheme that's an inside joke that's turned around to bite them is most amusing.

@FAE I hated that.
Dawn of Discovery is a stupid name.

@Wipqozn Especially since everybody but NA refers to it as 1404.

FAE
@Wipqozn I agree. The publishers felt they needed something that sounded more "exciting and interesting" for the American audience

3:39 PM

Q: My DualShock 3's L1 button stopped working. Can I fix it without soldering?

JohnoBoyOn one of my DualShock 3s the L1 has stopped responding. It "feels" OK, presses normally, and from taking the back cover off looks like the rubber pad is being pressed, so I assume the problem lies within the PCB under the rubber pads. I have a couple of SIXAXISs I can salvage components off, h...

@FAE Just like they changed the Heavy Rain box art to something dumb.
@Wipqozn I'd play that game.

FAE
@OrigamiRobot Yeah, they do that with a lot of US box art. :( I'm glad I have the EU art for that.

@FAE I hate you for that. Most American box art is fucking terrible.

FAE
@Wipqozn There's so much focus on floating heads.

3:43 PM
I think the Ico box art is the biggest example of why people in charge of American box art are criminal:

@Wipqozn Spunkgargleweewees

The EU/JAP box art is a piece of art.
The american one is fucking terrible.

@Wipqozn To be fair, the North American culture focuses on the individual. That's capitalism for you.

The SotC box art was a lot better
I prefer the JAP box art over the US, but they're both fairly good
In some ways I prefer the US one.
Also, Angry Kirby. why do you insist on making American Kirby angry?!?! WHY?!?!?!?

3:47 PM
I'm going to assume that the companies do this knowing that they would attract more sales. Blame the 'Murikan consumers.

@Wipqozn The people that make these decisions still think it's the 90s

Opinions: Would the JAP box art be improved without a floating head?
@OrigamiRobot You can't really blame them. If you look at the mainstream gaming industry in America it's all SHOOTY-MC-HALL-CALL-OF-GEARS-WARS
DORITOS

@Wipqozn It looks kind of out of place, yes.

3:49 PM
sigh I have to bash an LDAP filter script to do some field combinations.

@YiJiang Okay, I thought the same. Just curious if others shared my opinion.

@Wipqozn Because that's how it's portrayed and that's what get's the most advertising etc etc etc
It's a vicious cycle.

@OrigamiRobot I know, hence the problem.

And the client insists on ensuring the job title field has to have "<EMPLOYEE>" at the front of it. For all of them.

I blame @AshleyNunn.

3:50 PM
If you look at the full size image it doesn't appear that incongruous. I was about to mention that the art style for the head seems different, but on closer inspection that doesn't appear to be the case

@Wipqozn I prefer the US here.

@wipqozn not sure what I am being blamed for but okay. :)

@OrigamiRobot Really? I find the US one is really bad. It just looks like someone threw a few characters onto the box-art haphazardly.

also if someone could come to my house and bring a good spoon with which to scoop my brains out that would be most appreciated. In other news, we went from +16 yesterday to - 2 today. Migraine city.

@Wipqozn If they took away the face on the JP one, it would win hands down.

@OrigamiRobot Yeah, the fact is odd.

@AshleyNunn I'm pretty sure we're at -16, period.

@Wipqozn Also I can't get past the name "Trusty Bell"

@fbueckert - 16 would not be bad. I don't care about the actual temp, I just want something steady so my brain stops threatening to leak out my ears if I so much as think of doing anything non-horizontal. I can feel my nostrils and eyeballs and teeth. It's miserable.

@AshleyNunn You need some hot water bottles and cuddly blankets.

FAE
@AshleyNunn Feel better soon!

@AshleyNunn :(
lots of sleep sounds like a good idea for you!

If it makes you feel any better @AshleyNunn, your mere presence in this room is increasing my desire to play Harvest Moon, but I won't be able to pick the game up until tomorrow. So until then I must suffer.

@AshleyNunn Adventure Time is probably the best solution.

@OrigamiRobot I watched them all after you recommended them, I prefer Invader Zim by miles
Venture Brothers as well, even

FAE
I'm looking forward to Venture Bros. starting again

they're making more?
