1*"Geo"+0*"bits" is also "Geo", because what else would it be
Well of course :P
Then again, string multiplication is fairly common. I'm not sure being able to multiply null is.
back to a question I asked before
I am interested in if we can make a challenge about of formula minimization for determinant or permanent
> 1*"Geo"+0*"bits"
< NaN
Also correct. It is not a number.
@Geobits it's not string multiplication
15:03
that is fix a small n and consider an n by n matrix. Can we minimize the number of arithmetic operations to compute the determinant/permanent of the matrix?
2*"Geo" remains unevaluated
@MartinEnder Wait what? What is it doing then?
I may need some help from someone to make this challenge work however
anyone interested?
it's just that 1*x and 0+x are x for almost any x
Ah. Weird.
15:03
and 0*x is 0 for almost any x
for extra fun "Geo"^0 is 1
Well that makes sense in that light lol
ah, forgot one: "Geobits"-"Geobits" is also zero
this stuff works with symbols as well, e.g. While-While
Oh eww
I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that language any more, but...
a...hola?
15:13
Hello
Is it allowed here to post a code golf for specific language?
discouraged but yes you can
Which rather challenges the knowledge of the language specification.
In order to solve a specific problem of-course.
@CisNOTthatGOODbutISOisTHATBAD unless your challenge is tied to the features of a specific language, you're probably better off not limiting it to one language
If there's a good reason to limit it, then it does better. For example, if it's about C pointer tricks, etc, it'll do better than "golf this, but in C".
@CisNOTthatGOODbutISOisTHATBAD in either case, post it in the Sandbox
15:15
It depends on what the challenge is about. We don't need shortest code for X in language Y for all languages, but some contests only make sense is a small set of languages.
What is this Sandbox?
because getting a challenge right is tough
Well ok - I guess I'll post it there.
just ran into a user whose near entire answer base is incorrect
on this site?
15:18
AU
@MartinEnder I don't know if it'll be the same challenge level on any other language then C.
recommending OP reinstalls the Broadcom driver on a machine that doesn't have a WiFi card in the first place (and Realtek Ethernet), or who has an Intel card
Ask Ubuntu
15:19
In java for example - is it possible to change the type of an already declared variable?
it looks like he just found something that might be relevant and then answered it a few times
@CisNOTthatGOODbutISOisTHATBAD By casting, but only for compatible types.
Well, actually, not really
I read that wrong
@CisNOTthatGOODbutISOisTHATBAD technically, yes. you'll run into an error at runtime
Integer four = 4;
String s = (String)(Object) four;
however, realize that "types" is not well defined in challenges
so doing a challenge that says "change the type" is really tough (if not impossible) to get right
I got the impression he meant actually changing the type of variable four, not casting it to another.
I could be wrong.
still, even then, it depends on what you consider "type"
isn't generics all about changing the type anyways?
15:23
Yeah, I guess generics could count as that. Maybe.
I don't know of any language with statically declared types that lets you change them
that sounds like an all-around bad idea
We'll see what it looks like in the sandbox :)
no, this could be a really good esolang
like, when does this type change happen?
I think "static types" is pretty much incompatible with "changing types" though ;)
I mean, if you can change them at will, are they really static?
if they finally resolve at compile time?
15:27
Anyone here work / study in physics, we need some guesses as to what this is: reddit.com/r/controllablewebcams/comments/5dyeyx/…
ah, but then that's generics again
also, for the cops and robbers for "make a language that is unusable", somebody should have really created a type system so complex that writing in it was so painful it was unusable
feersum did something like that actually although I'm not sure if it was for that
I think everything was a template or something cruel like that
@flawr lol facebook geezer wtf that's a shitton of snow
iirc the last time we got snow here in southern california was 4 years ago, a bit of frost 1 night
I can count the number of times I've seen snow in my life on one hand.
Which is depressing because I really like it
15:42
I can count it on no hands.
I get the feeling I only like it in theory though. I'm not really one for shoveling walks
Hey, everyone! Who lost too much reputation recently because a "User was removed"?
I can look out the window and see snowy mountains
Nah, Greece == No snow at all (or very little, at utmost maximum 1 day per year)
@EriktheGolfer I lost 10 rep because of that
15:46
@Fatalize Well, I mean technically I can do that too if I pick the right window at the right time
They're pretty far away though.
Well, guess what: I lost 40.
My city is surrounded by mountains
@quartata Snow is fun. For a few days. That's it. Then it's a pain.
@EriktheGolfer Lost 0
@Geobits Yeah, that's pretty much what I guessed.
15:47
Lucky you, Fatalize!
@EriktheGolfer don't go fishing for compliments please
you'll be okay with only 40 rep removed
Meh, I don't care at all. I didn't want compliments, I just wanted to light up another off-topic conversation. Oh, and see who else had had minor injuries by that.
Snow tastes nice, especially in the form of a snowball
@EriktheGolfer ... that's not really any better
The sound it makes when you walk on snow is the best though
15:49
Yeah, the crunch is nice.
I don't think I've ever had a year without snow
You've never lived in Greece, then!
When I eat snow, as it enters my mouth, it melts and gives off a nice "fizzy" sensation. Once I finished having snow, I feel thirsty for some reason
Rain/snowwater is mainly H₂O, which means that it doesn't cure thirst.
I never was a fan of eating snow. I mean, unless you soak it in tasty sweet syrupy stuff.
> doesn't cure thirst
o_O
But it still is nice to eat snow, if not for thirst, for the flavour
15:52
A better expression would have been "doesn't help with thirst".
@KritixiLithos Snow is filthy, at least the snow I've seen
I would not recommend
For me, at the very least, snow is the best, because... no school that day!
15:52
@Geobits Mmm yes, that's yummy.
Fresh snow is fine. You wouldn't eat the snow out of the gutter after a day...
And I only took snow from undisturbed areas and from the top.
That makes me feel even worse - I've only seen snow actually falling once
Please, make sure the snow is clean of CO₂.
everything else was just kind of lame snow/ice leftovers
15:53
@El'endiaStarman Me too
@quartata Can't you just drive a couple hundred miles north for snow? :P
@Geobits But that involves effort
@quartata 0_0 really? I've seem snow hundreds of times
That's so sad...
@quartata Oh. Well in that case it's clearly a non-starter.
i saw some snowflakes last year
It was snowing yesterday.
You're all making feel sad...
It snowed here yesterday morning and yesterday night. I had a closing shift at work and had to brush off my car before driving home.
Please, do not feel sad. Turn OPTIMISM_OP on.
it was 23 degrees today
15:56
@DrMcMoylex It's ~50 miles to the closest place where you might be able to see snow here and it's a hard drive
^^(celsius)
100 miles gets you better odds
@betseg For a second there I thought you meant you got snow today
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ You should just move to Colorado. Problem solved!
Oh, I definitely don't get snow here at all, but I've lived places where it snowed plenty.
15:57
@Geobits Yeah, I was a little confused
@betseg :33640712 23... celsius? Oh, we've got 5-20 here.
Florida is not notorious for white Christmases I thought
@quartata You didn't know? Florida is known for being very snowy >_>
@DrMcMoylex Upstate New York works too. Buffalo especially.
No... Christmas around here sees lights wrapped round palm trees :/
15:58
@El'endiaStarman Oh my, I know someone who lives in Upstate New York and apparently the snow is just insane (and not in a good way)
@El'endiaStarman I lived near Syracuse for a year. Crazy snow coming off the lakes.
@El'endiaStarman Isn't that crazy pricy?
@DrMcMoylex What's "that"?
Google says cost of living in Buffalo in particular is 84% the national average.
